It`s always silent in James threads :o
Good luck James for all the year!!!

I'll make some noise. I was able to catch his match against Kiefer on the Tennis Channel the other night. He looked about as good as I've ever seen him, although I wish he had capitalized on his chances in the second set. He also was a little reckless in the tiebreak, but that's to be expected from him. Sometimes the risks pay off, and sometimes they nail him. Looks like he's playing well in general, so hopefully this translates into success at the AO! :woohoo:

I'll make some noise, too! :aparty: :aparty: :aparty:

I find it encouraging to see James serving in the 60%+ 1st serve range the last two matches. To me, his serve seems like one of the weakest parts of his game. Hopefully, all the work he put in on his serve during the off-season pays off this year. :)

^The switch is official. :awww: It says in the article there might be his own Fila line... but that's just a rumor for now. He must have gotten a ton of $$$ to switch to Fila from Nike. This might be better since a lot of top men wear Nike (Nadal, Federer, Del Potro, Monfils). He will probably get more attention from Fila, especially if he really does get his own line. :D

But I wonder - will this mark the end of the J-Block shirts?

Nearly all the Nike logos were edited out of pictures on his website - weird.

Edit: I found a better practice picture with him wearing the Fila gear here -> http://blog.tennisweek.com/?p=329

FILA AND JAMES BLAKE TO COLLABORATE ON MEN’S APPAREL AND FOOTWEAR COLLECTION

The first collaboration of its kind in the sport of tennis - Blake to serve as inspiration for collection

Sparks, MD - Fila announced today that it has entered into a collaboration arrangement with ATP World Tour star James Blake to develop a collection of men’s apparel and footwear. The collection will incorporate the heritage of the Fila brand with a contemporary twist inspired by Blake’s signature style. He will collaborate with Fila’s design team to create a co-branded collection. The yet to be named collection will target today’s active male and will be the basis for the development of a long-term licensing business for Blake.

The collection will include tennis, golf, fitness and lifestyle apparel, performance and lifestyle footwear and accessories for men. Fila and James Blake will also explore other product categories as opportunities arise in the market. The collection will debut with a limited collection of tennis and fitness apparel that will be unveiled just before the 2009 US Open in New York. The collection will officially launch for the Spring Summer 2010 season.

James will wear Fila branded or co-branded tennis apparel and footwear exclusively on court and he will be featured in Fila’s worldwide marketing efforts. He is the first top ten American male in over ten years to sign with Fila. James will debut in Fila’s Collezione Apparel Collection and the Fila Alfa shoe at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with an athlete of James Blake’s caliber,” said Gene Yoon, Chairman of Fila. “Fila has been associated with champions in tennis and other sports for over 35 years. We are certain that through our collaboration with James, we will create a range of products that combines the rich style of our historic brand and James’ active and sophisticated lifestyle.”

“I have always had an affinity for the Fila brand,” said James Blake. “Ever since Borg graced the courts of Wimbledon in Fila, I have always been attracted to the Italian style, grace and sophistication of the Fila brand. My collaboration with Fila is much more than an endorsement arrangement. It will serve as the foundation of a business venture that I that will continue to build for years to come.”

Fila has a long and distinguished history in the world of tennis. The company has endorsement agreements with several ATP Tour and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour athletes, is a major sponsor of the Sony Ericsson Open, Tennis Tournament at Indian Wells, and the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships and is the footwear licensee with The Championships at Wimbledon.

About Fila: Established in Italy in 1911, Fila is a leading manufacturer of sport and leisure footwear and apparel distributed worldwide. The internationally respected company, having gained world class recognition in tennis apparel, has developed brand recognition by marketing products with a high design and style content that are endorsed by professional artists and athletes from around the world.

A long-term licensing business sounds pretty good, huh? :yeah: Now he'll get to wear his own designed clothes. This deal is better than I thought it would be! :)

Australian Open round 1 post match interview.

Q. Is that a satisfying opening round for you today?

JAMES BLAKE: Yeah. At this level, any time you get a win, it's satisfying. I think Frank played great in that third set, really pushed me. I returned pretty well. I thought he returned pretty well.

The only thing I think I could have done a little better was serve, get a little higher first‑serve percentage in. Get few free points out of that. I kind of weathered the storm with him playing what I considered great tennis in that third set. So I'm happy with it. Get out of there in three sets, be ready for the next round.

Q. Was there any point where you thought it might go another couple of sets?

JAMES BLAKE: Yeah, definitely. He had Love‑40 twice in the third set on my serve. If he wins any one of those six points, there's a good chance it's going to a fourth set.

Luckily I didn't panic. That's one thing that's better about me at 29 than it was at probably 21 or 22. I have the confidence, the knowledge that I can go five sets. I can last, that no matter if I'm up or down going into the fifth set, I can hopefully turn it around and make sure to put all of that out of my mind and play solid.

I didn't panic. I just kept going for my shots. Made a lot of first serves on those breakpoints. Then when I got my breakpoints, I took advantage of those chances.

Q. There's some tough competitors coming up if you continue to go this way. What do you think of your chances throughout the rest of The Open?

JAMES BLAKE: Well, I got to worry about the next one. I can't think too far down the road. I think I've got a guy that's probably got nothing to lose the next round, just like Frank did. That can be dangerous.

But the way I'm playing, I feel pretty good. There's going to be tough competitors as you get later in a Grand Slam no matter which Grand Slam, no matter what section of the draw you're in. If you're in the third, fourth round, quarterfinals of a Slam, you're not going to get an easy match.

So I'm not concerned about that. I just need to hopefully keep playing better and better and expect that the competition's going to get tougher and tougher.

Q. Anything you feel you need to improve on for the next round?

JAMES BLAKE: Like I said, the only thing I felt could have been a little better was my first‑serve percentage and maybe could have mixed up my second serve a little better. It got a little gusty out there. That was messing with my second serve a little bit.

But otherwise I felt like I was hitting the ball from the ground well, returning pretty well when I got my racquet on it, taking advantage of my chances and coming forward and actually volleyed pretty well today, too.

Mainly going to hit a few serves tomorrow in practice and just kind of hopefully hope for the best in the next round. I was actually hitting it great in practice last week. So hopefully this is just a one‑time thing.

Q. Coming up in just a few hours, Barack Obama's inauguration, does that have any significance to you, being African American?

JAMES BLAKE: Absolutely has significance to me. I hope it has significance to a lot of people in the States. We're in a time that seems very historic. We're looking for positive change in the States. We're in some situations that are less than ideal in our country. I think if there's any man for the job that's ahead of him that can deal with the tasks and the pressures of being President in this tumultuous time, it's Barack Obama.

I was proud to donate and help with the campaign. I'm proud to ‑‑ I'm always proud to say I'm an American, but I'm going to be especially proud at 4 a.m. here. It's going to be a very significant inauguration, a very significant presidency to have the first African American in power. Hopefully it will knock down more doors.

It was so great to see an African American and a female running for the highest office in our country. I really think there's no one better qualified for the job than Barack Obama right now.

Q. Will you be watching at 4 a.m.?

JAMES BLAKE: It will be TiVo'd back at home. I've already got that set. It will be on for when I get home. But I don't know, unfortunately or fortunately, to do this job, in the situation in the States, I need to make sure I'm happy about having a job. So with this job, I need to be very singularly focused on the next round. So I need to get a lot of sleep. So I'll probably be in bed. But if I happen to be tossing and turning, not able to sleep, I'll definitely put that on.

Q. You said you helped with the campaign. What did you do?

JAMES BLAKE: Just donations when I got a chance. I got a friend that works for them. So I was in contact with him. I tried to make it to one of the events in Tampa, but I was out of town and couldn't make it back. I helped out with a couple of fund‑raisers in New York, as well.

He can be quite tricky, but the way James is playing I don't see it being an issue. ;) Don't worry, you didn't miss much - ESPN only showed about 12 minutes of his match. From what I saw, he was playing really good. According to the statistics on the AO website, his first serve percentage was 63%. But I hope he can reduce the # of DF's for the coming harder matches - 5 DF's each in both matches.

I'm not too worried about Andreev. The Head-to-Head is 5-0. :)

Keep it up James!!! Revenge time against Tsonga!! Brad Gilbert and Chris Fowler were commentating like they were sitting on the living couch having beer and chicken wings and just shooting the breeze... it got really annoying. Although Brad's comment that James had "a Betty Crocker draw" first week had me laughing.

I agree about liking to see James mixing it up and coming to the net more. I liked the serve & volley. It always good to mix things up and be less predictable - that's where he gets into trouble in the big matches, besides his serve. Speaking of his serve... **goes and looks for statistics** James 1st serve was 61% and had 0 DF's. :) The unforced errors weren't out of control and he was winning a lot more on 2nd serve than Andreev was (65% to 38%) - that's good to see. :)

The match against Tsonga should be very interesting. I wonder how Tsonga is holding up and will he hold up when the weather gets very hot for the match. Given their playing styles, it will be an exciting match. :yeah:

James' third round post match interview. :)
Q. Are you playing well enough to equal or better your quarterfinal appear's from last year?

JAMES BLAKE: I hope so. We'll find out. Couple more matches hopefully and we'll see about that.

I can only beat one person at a time. I can't look that far ahead in the draw. Today I was good enough to win. Hopefully it will be the same Monday, and then we'll probably revisit that question hopefully on Wednesday.

Q. How do you assess your game so far?

JAMES BLAKE: It's been good. Different conditions. The first couple was a little windier out on Margaret Court. Today dealing with the shadows. No wind and calm. Not too hot. It was perfect conditions really.

I felt like I was playing well, attacking well. Came up with a couple pretty good volleys. Missed a couple easy volleys. But overall I was playing my kind of game: aggressive and taking time away from Igor, which I think is something you got to do. If you let him set up and rip that forehand, he's going to hurt you pretty bad.

I felt like I was playing smart and playing really well.

Q. Talk about your next match. You played him in Paris in November. He got the best of you. Different surface.

JAMES BLAKE: He played really well there in Paris. He kind of just overpowered me a little. He was serving unbelievable, didn't give me too many looks, just was taking rips and feeling loose on my serve.

If he does that and plays just as well as he possibly can, it's going to be tough for me to get looks. But I have a feeling this time in a three‑out‑of‑five‑set match, I'll get my chance, I'll get some opportunity, maybe looks at second serves, get an advantage. Take a little time away from him. He does a good job of doing that to his opponents. It's going to be kind of first to the punch, first to hurt the other guy a little bit. We'll see what happens. He's obviously been playing some pretty good tennis to beat guys like Ljubicic. I didn't see much of his match today because I was out there today. Must have played well. Pretty convincing score line at the end. I know it will be tough.

I don't ever consider any match out here easy. I expect another tough one on Monday.

Q. You recently switched your sponsor from Nike to Fila. Can you talk about Fila a little bit?

JAMES BLAKE: Yeah, it's a great company. Has a strong tradition in tennis. Back to the likes of Bjorn Borg. In more recent time they've had a little more visibility in the women's game with Jennifer Capriati, Monica Seles when she started, now with Kuznetsova and Agnes Szavay.

It's good to be part of the men's version and hopefully get it back to the same level it was at in the '70s with Bjorn Borg.

I've always had a lot of respect for them as a company. The biggest thing for me is how open they are to hearing my ideas. Very soon it will be a lot inspired by me. I'm going to start my own line within Fila. I'm going to have my own name, my own trademark as a part of the Fila brand.

To have a company have that much faith in you, that you can sell that much product, and you can be a force in the tennis world, I'm excited about that.

I'm really excited to do some things that will hopefully last even longer than my career. If the line is doing well, when I'm done playing, it will be something that will be an easy transition. When I'm done playing tennis, I can still be involved in the game a little way by dealing with the style and the playability. It always has to be functional. That's the way the Fila clothes are for me. They're making it easy on me in the transition from Nike. It's a good fit right now. So I'm excited about that. They're going to let me also design some lifestyle and casual and golf clothes. Hopefully I'll be in Fila and then my own line for a long time to come.

Q. You're a designing man like Venus and Serena are designing women?

JAMES BLAKE: I didn't go to design school like I know they did, but I got some ideas. I'm sure the designers that will be in the room will probably laugh at my ideas and tell me they're just not possible.

But I'm excited about starting that. We've already actually started a little bit, some of the brainstorming for the US Open because I'm learning how far out you got to plan for these things. They're saying we got to rush to do that. Then it's still going to be a little bit of a rush to get all the entire line out by the spring of 2010. It's going to be some work. It's going to be like I'm back in school, doing some homework when I get back home from here.

Q. You want to try out some of those ideas on us?

JAMES BLAKE: I don't think I'll be doing sleeveless any more. Probably back to more traditional roots. That's the first idea. Then we'll figure out the actual designs when I get back to the States probably.

Q. Do you feel like yourself involved in fashion when you retire?

JAMES BLAKE: That's possible. This is going to be a perfect situation to find that out. I enjoy fashion off the court. I think it's something that's interesting to deal with on the court because most guys, I can't go at it from the female perspective, but from a guys' perspective, we want to make sure we feel good on the court. Not as much looking pretty or looking perfect. But as long as we feel good and the clothes fit right and they're functional and they're not taking any attention away from the job at hand, that's the biggest thing for us.

I'm going to be excited about designing those to make sure that, you know, sometimes you have little ideas when you got something that doesn't fit exactly right or doesn't feel as comfortable on the court, you want to just tell me. Now, I'm going to have the control to do that. So, if I'm out there blaming my equipment, it's going to be my own fault eventually. I hope that doesn't happen too often.

Off the court I really enjoy the casual wear, the golf stuff, the things you'd wear just walking around the mall. It's going to be fun to be part of the design team that does that.

Q. When you play someone like Tsonga, who likes the big matches and stages, do you have to match his energy level?

JAMES BLAKE: I think that's something that has to happen in just about every match you play. Just today, going into this match, I'm 5‑0 against Andreev. He's kind of got nothing to lose. He won two close five‑setters.

If I go out there a little flat, not matching his energy, I'm probably going to lose that match. That's the small percentage difference in the players these days, just that little bit of being excited, being energetic, getting up for every match.

If I don't match his energy, I don't stand much of a chance. I'll need to do that. I'll need to be focused. I'll need to be ready. I think it's something a lot of players learn their first time kind of getting up in the rankings, you can't just rest on that. You can't beat someone with your ranking. You got to beat them out on the court and be just as hungry as they are.

Q. You've had a lot of success against Andreev. How does this particular match compare to the other ones you played against him?

JAMES BLAKE: Well, I think it's something where I just seem to match up well against him. My forehand is my strength, his forehand is his strength. We kind of battle with those. Then I try to take time away from him. He's a guy that kind of dictates play when he's got time. When he can set up and rip that big forehand, he can hurt you from way behind the baseline.

I'm somehow able to take a little bit of that time away from him, make him press a little bit more than he probably would like. Might be a different story on clay. I've never played him on clay. I think that's definitely helped my record against him.

But it's just something where I've happened to play well against him every time I've played him.

Q. Is this the best you played against him?

JAMES BLAKE: I don't know. It's tough to say. I played really well against him in Indian Wells, when I beat him, maybe 4‑1. Wimbledon was a different experience, being on grass. But this is up there with as well as I could play against him.

Q. You're getting up there, you're a veteran. When you look back, you still seem pretty eager, fired up. The break in 2004 wasn't one that you consciously took. Do you think that's a factor? Do you think more players will be more conscious of taking larger chunks of time off on the tour?

JAMES BLAKE: Yeah, like you said, it's something I wasn't planning on. But when it did happen, you take advantage of the opportunities you have. Taking a break does make me feel a little younger in what I like to call 'tennis years'.

I didn't start on tour till I was 19, almost 20. Then I took basically almost a year‑long break. You look at guys like Agassi, who lasted till he was 36 years old, was still at the top of the game at that point. He took an extended break at one point, too.

I think it's just something that your bodies really need to regenerate. They need to take breaks. When you only have a month off, which means you take two weeks off the court, then you got to get right back to training, because you're training for one of the biggest tournaments of the year here in Australia, especially in the heat.

You don't have time to deal with little injuries, to really rest them, completely get off the court and focus on getting healthy.

So I think that time for me was mainly focused on getting healthy as a person, not as a tennis player or even really thinking about being a tennis player. But in the long run, it may have helped me in terms of just having that time to relax and get off the court and not even think about it, then come back refreshed, ready.

Like you said, I'm 29 years old and I'm still eager. I'm going to be trying to match Tsonga's enthusiasm, match these young kids' enthusiasm. I think I have that ability because I don't feel burnt out. I don't feel as worn down by the tour as a lot of guys can at this stage, thanks to a break in the middle of it.

Q. You spoke about playing Andreev on clay. You've had some success against Nadal on other surfaces. How do you beat Nadal on clay?

JAMES BLAKE: I don't know. Has anyone figured it out yet (laughter)? I don't think anyone has figured it out in three out of five yet.

My guess, I'm by no means a clay court specialist, or everyone close to that, but I generally play the same way I play on hard on clay, with very slight adjustments. So I would play him the same way I play him on hard: try to take the time away from him, make him beat you with his backhand, make him hit passing shot after passing shot, which for him is easier on clay, because you're sliding around more up at net.

Your first serve is not going to get you as many free points. I've never played him on clay. That's most times not an unenviable task.

Q. What are the two best matches you ever played drama‑wise? Agassi and what else?

JAMES BLAKE: Yeah, Agassi has to be No. 1 in terms of drama. Hmm, I don't know. I don't know what the other one would be.

Q. Federer?

JAMES BLAKE: That one was pretty exciting at the Open. The quarterfinals as well.

Q. Davis Cup?

JAMES BLAKE: Davis Cup possibly against Paul‑Henri Mathieu last year. That was probably the next one. Saving two match points with two pretty good points on his serve, then coming back and winning that 7‑5 in the fifth set. Or another loss possibility in Davis Cup, when I lost about 12‑10 or 13‑11 to Fernando González in Palm Springs, yeah.

There have been a couple that have been pretty exciting. Hopefully there will be plenty more wins to think about with a lot of drama, as well. Although I'll take them easy, too (smiling).

Watching James lose is like watching a puppy drown.

He wasn't serving or returning very well, and wasn't using as much variety as in his previous match. :awww: But I thought he did a good job to make it to a 3rd set tiebreak and frustrating Tsonga by getting to balls he thought would be winners. I'm just glad James kept fighting until the end and didn't just throw his hands up and say "screw it" and quit trying like some other players would. :) I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm not too disappointed. When I looked at the draw, I thought James would make it to the R16 and he did, so he met my expectations. :)

Here's his post match interview... :(
Q. What's the experience like of playing him? He has a lot of speed, power.

JAMES BLAKE: Yeah, he played great. Serve was probably giving me the most trouble. When he was making first serves, it made it really difficult for me to get into points. He has such an aggressive style, if you block that first one back, you're going to be running. You're going to be in trouble. That was a big problem for me.

I didn't take advantage of some of the opportunities I had on some second serves. Just, yeah, a little frustrating. Didn't feel like I served well. Didn't feel like I returned well. Otherwise it was okay.

Those are two pretty important parts of the game. Especially on the returns, it's one that I usually take pride in being pretty good at. Didn't execute today. Didn't make a lot of ‑‑ didn't get a lot of free points on my first serve, which, you know, can make it tough to work all day that way.

Q. Was he varying the speed on the second to change it up on you?

JAMES BLAKE: Yeah, he was varying the speed. He did a good job. But I still felt like I could have done a better job returning, especially in that tiebreaker, missing two pretty easy ones that I thought I could have really taken advantage of.

Q. Were the fireworks frustrating or were you hoping it might slow him down?

JAMES BLAKE: No. I've dealt with different things. In any match, there's injury time‑outs, things happen in the crowd. Anything could happen. We were prepared for that beforehand. They told us that it was going to happen around that time.

They wanted to try to do it on a changeover, then see if we wanted to sit it out. If one person wanted to sit and not play through it, then we wouldn't play through it. He didn't want to play through it. So we sat there and waited for, whatever, 10 minutes.

Q. How would you rate his form compared to when you last played him in Paris?

JAMES BLAKE: He did it consistently this time. He did it over three sets instead of two. He managed to keep his level that high. It was a similar serving performance. Might have been a little better in Paris. But from the baseline and from returning, I think he did even better here.

Q. When he's playing his big game like that, where do you think he sort of fits in, in terms of the big games you played against over the years?

JAMES BLAKE: I don't know. They seem to keep getting bigger and bigger. You know, it's just the nature of the game. It gets better every year.

You know, I don't want to try to compare guys now to guys 10 years ago because I generally don't think that's fair and I don't think it's really relevant. So I don't know.

I mean, it's bigger than the last few guys I've played. So that's all I have to compare it to right now. Hopefully I'll figure out a way to combat that next time. But for right now, it was big enough to beat me.

Q. How do you fancy his chances to win the tournament?

JAMES BLAKE: I don't know. I'll leave that to the commentators and the sportswriters and people that, you know, seem to know the game better than me.

jeahhh!

Just as I suspected:

It was a command performance of sorts for Haas, who had completed his first round match in the main event and stepped in for the exo after Sampras’ original opponent, James Blake, pulled out with an injury incurred earlier in his afternoon doubles match (Blake still plans to compete in the singles here).

http://www.sapopentennis.com/news/News.asp?story_id=270

Here's a little more from an article that was linked on his site:

Blake, who suffered back spasms during a doubles match Monday, hasn't ruled out being ready for his first-round singles match Wednesday night against Vince Spadea. Shortly before Monday's exhibition, Blake walked onto the court with tournament director Bill Rapp and broke the news to the crowd.

"I'm sorry," Blake said. "I just can't go out there and give it my best. I'm going to go back and visit the trainer. I hope to be out there Wednesday."

http://www.berryessasun.com/ci_11668348
When it's mentioned that he has problems with his back, I get nervous. It's because of the scoliosis - that would be the #1 thing that could end his career. :scared: But I'm not nervous yet. He could have just had a bad flight or slept wrong and his back may have been stiff, which could have been further aggravated by playing doubles. He has 2 full days to rest between the doubles and his first singles match. He will probably be fine. ;)

EDIT: I found something from an AP article:
Tournament officials were scrambling when Blake informed them of his withdrawal less than 15 minutes before the scheduled start.

“Ten minutes after my match I saw James was struggling a little bit,” Haas said. “Then Pete asked me and I said sure, why not? A lot of people came to see Pete tonight, and not who he played. It was fun. Pete still has an unbelievable serve.”

Haas won the match, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 12-10.

Blake played a doubles match earlier in the day with Mardy Fish and is scheduled to play Vincent Spadea on Wednesday night.

“Maybe it will be all right to get through that,” Blake said. “It was pretty painful just doing the little things during my doubles match. Right now it’s not feeling great, but hopefully a good night’s sleep will pay off.”

After the match, Blake exchanged words with the Frenchman because of some on-court antics. “He’s was doing some stuff we used to do in Juniors. He’s too good for that. He’s a very good player and I have a lot of respect for his game.

“He was moving when I was looking at him or when I’m tossing the ball. These are things I think don’t really have a place on the pro tour.”

James & Mardy won in doubles pretty easily last night. They beat Cerretani & Querrey 6-1 6-4 in 45 minutes. :woohoo:

I'm looking at the stats for this match on the livescore and this can't be right. It says James & Mardy had a 1st serve % of 80%, on their serve they won 94% of their 1st serve points and 75% of their 2nd serve points, never faced a BP, and had only 1 DF! Were these stats switched with the Bryans??? Why can't they play like this in singles??!! :ras:

James & Mardy next play Haas & Stepanek in the SF's. That should be a good match. :)

A other bit interesting from an San Francisco Chronicles article about the match against Spadea:

"The third-seeded Blake needed only 50 minutes to dispatch Spadea 6-3, 6-4, a convincing win that had to feel good given Spadea's autobiography.

In 2006, Spadea published a book in which he criticized Blake for questionable character because he allegedly "trash-talked" during a match. Spadea also chastised Blake for stealing ladies' attentions at a party."

James now has the unique task of playing against Mardy tomorrow afternoon in singles, then playing with Mardy in doubles tomorrow night.

In this article (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/news/story?id=3906702), it says James rolled his ankle near the end of the match - but he said it's not an issue and his back is better. :) I liked this quote:

"There won't be any hard feelings," Blake said with a grin. "There better not be any hard feelings, or there might be a serve to the back of the head. ... Hopefully, we can go out to dinner tonight, play each other tomorrow, and then go out to dinner again." :haha:

Why the the other players don't like James, he is a so fair player:confused: I didn't bother to mention it because it has been talked about A LOT since Vince's book came out in 2006 and again a year later when James' book came out. Why doesn`t he play doubles with Mardy in Memphis? I was wondering the same thing. Mardy is on the doubles list with Mark Knowles. Maybe James & Mardy feel their doubles pairing is so explosively good they can't take it for 2 weeks in a row.

Mary, they're playing right now....

if I had to guess about doubles in Memphis it's because the San Jose was a later-minute decision and he didn't want to plan ahead in Memphis or something? And considering he's got some back and ankle problems it's probably not a good idea anyway...

edit: there was a long break after the first set, i wonder if james is having problems with his ankle, he's never retired mid-match i don't believe...

Hmm... Do you know anything more on the ankle? I saw he lost 3-6 2-6.... Wondering if that had anything to do with it.

I just watched the end of the livescores so I don't know how he was playing.... :|

Ugh. I just watched it on TV. James had his ankle taped after the 3rd game and again between sets. He couldn't move much or change directions. I noticed during the 2nd set that James wasn't doing his usual crouching when waiting for Fish to serve - he was just standing up straight. It was weird. I think his back was bothering him as well. Tough to watch.

I agree with you. James can be stubborn, and might say his ankle is fine when it really isn't. His back was bothering him last week, too, so hopefully these are minor injuries and with a couple of weeks' rest, he'll be good as new.

Friday
James Blake (USA) v Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI)
Andy Roddick (USA) v Marco Chiudinelli (SUI)

Saturday
Bob Bryan/Mike Bryan (USA) v Yves Allegro/Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI)

Sunday
Andy Roddick (USA) v Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI)
James Blake (USA) v Marco Chiudinelli (SUI)
--------------------------------------------------------

The most exciting of all the match-ups is the first one! :yeah:
James is 0-2 against Wawrinka
2008 Rome Masters QF 6-7(5) 7-6(5) 6-1
2005 Roland Garros R64 6-7(9) 5-7 6-1 6-3 6-4
Note that both of those matches were on clay and went the distance. This will be their first match-up on hard court. :)

James lost to Wawrinka 36 64 64 76. :awww:

This is also the first time James has lost on HC in Davis Cup - previously 12-0 (11-0 singles). His first serve wasn't very good, and he seemed to be missing opportunities - especially break points! :help: I have to admit... I didn't have a lot of confidence in James for this match. I was a bit surprised that he was picked for the team - I thought Mardy would have been (and maybe he should have ). But James did play a lot better than I expected and showed no signs of any injury. :) It was definitely an exciting match to watch and it's probably a good thing that the toughest match-up was first. ;)

Let's move on... the Indian Wells draw is out! :)

James is seeded #13 and has a 1st round bye. :) In the 2nd round, he could face Devilder (never played) or Nieminen (5-0). If James wins the 2nd round match - it will be his 300th career win! :yeah: In the 3rd round, he could face Hernych (0-1, 2005 Wimbledon), Hewitt (1-8), or Gonzalez (3-6, lost the last 6 meetings). :help: If James manages to get to the 4th round, the 2 seeded players he could face are Karlovic (1-3, lost the last 3) or Federer (1-8, won last meeting). :help: I'm not looking beyond that! But looking on the bright side, James normally does well in this tournament and anything could happen. :)

"Flake" next plays in the QF the winner of the Mirnyi/Ram (#7) - Aspelin/Hanley match that will finish tomorrow (play was suspended at 2-2 in the 5th set). The QF match will likely be on Wednesday.

The U.S. Davis Cup team was announced today and it's the usual - Andy, James, Bob & Mike. :) I honestly think Mardy should have been given a spot for this tie. "Flake" will play on Centre Court tomorrow (Thursday) after the Women's Semis. :D Maybe we'll get lucky and NBC will air this match (if they don't air the women's matches over again ).

I got to see some of their match today on ESPN and I like what I saw. :) At the end of the match, Aspelin & Hanley's strategy seemed to be to hit to James at much as they can because he was missing a few volleys - but James was solid when it really counted. :yeah: I thought it was funny how mad Hanley was when he was screwing up.

I hope they make the final (and leave the tournament with some hardware) because Mardy has been so good in doubles this year and it would also mean a lot to James for obvious reasons. ;) But Nestor & Zimonjic are a tough team to beat and are the defending champions. James & Mardy have given them serious scares at the Rome Masters the past 2 years, but didn't beat them. Maybe they can do better on grass this time. ;)

"Flake" lost 7-5 6-3 2-6 6-7(3) 8-10. :awww:

I watched the whole thing on live stream (none of it has been shown on NBC as of 4:15pm ET). James & Mardy looked so good the first 2 sets, but obviously the momentum shifted. They did a great job hanging in there for that long in the 5th. They never held match point, but the closest they got was at 5-4 in the 5th with 2 points away from a break. I'm gutted after watching this - tense and stressful. :crying2: But they did a great job - I hope they play doubles again at a GS.

Bad news - James withdrew from Washington due to the foot injury he got during DC. :awww:

I hope he can make it to the Masters events. :)

Oh well, he never goes. I guess I should be used to this. I was just so excited for him to come back.

Good news - James is practicing in Cincy (http://twitter.com/CincyTennis/status/3309390936) today. :)

Cincy draw is out -> James is unseeded and will face Kunitsyn in the 1st Rd. If he wins that one, Davydenko would be next. ;)

It looks like James is not going to New Haven. :awww:

James Blake met with the media after a two-hour hitting session and said he is not playing in New Haven. There will be more on his decision in friday's Register.

What said James after his 1st round match in Cincinnati:

“As much as I didn't feel great out there today, I know physically I'm gonna be all right for the Open because I did a ton of work in the pool, on the bike, and just in general on my legs for the last four weeks when I couldn't do much else. I have a good feeling from that. But it's tough to take positive from playing only one match and losing that match. Just gotta look forward to the Open and hope it gets better.”

I want him to make at least 4th round, but I'm not sure if it's still possible:confused:

^James is supposed to attend a party in Manhattan this coming Thursday to unveil the new Fila line which has been in the works since January. The time for the unveiling was planned back in January as well. So his injury pretty much screwed up his schedule this summer. I don't know if he was supposed to attend any other events next week. James is just practicing at New Haven (like he did last year). He and Mardy are scheduled to take part in some Kids Day events there tomorrow. :)

BTW, I had no idea Mardy fractured a rib in DC!

^

The USO draw is out - James is the #21 seed.

1st Rd - Ramirez Hidalgo (this should be winnable... :p)
2nd Rd - O. Rochus or Kunitsyn

If he can manage 2 wins in a row (it's been awhile)...

3rd Rd - Robredo (#14), Garcia-Lopez, or a qualifier
4th Rd - Federer. :wavey:

Time for an update...

James is in Beijing. He won his 1st Round match against Florian Mayer 6-3 3-6 6-3 on Tuesday. :) He also teamed up with Andy Ram for doubles and they beat Fyrstenburg/Matkowski 6-1 3-6 10-3 on Wednesday.

James has double duty Thursday - singles against Nadal  and doubles against Benneteau/Chardy.

I noticed today on the ATP website that James split with Brian Barker after the USO and Kelly Jones is his new coach! (Kelly was once Mardy's coach.) It's on his profile on the ATP site (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Players/Top-Players/James-Blake.aspx).

Kelly's a great coach and Mardy played a lot of his best tennis when he was with Kelly, but I am truly shocked. I think it's a great sign for James though.

:woohoo: wow omg omg omg omg omg ima go check if the world is still spinning:lol:

Good for James. Must have been tough to part ways with such a tight friend, but he never really had to split with him. He could have just hired this new guy and kept Barker as a side dish. But VERY good sign, his decision is just too late.

And tough loss against Rafa:( Hopefully he can learn from it and tear up Shanghai:fiery: :rocker:

James & Andy Ram lost in doubles to Benneteau/Chardy 7-5 4-6 4-10.

It looks like James played well against Rafa and at least made it tough for him. :)

I was surprised by the coaching change. I always figured he would bring on another coach for new ideas, and Brian would stay because they were friends. Hopefully this change will be a positive one. :)

EDIT: I posted an article from ESPN.com in the news thread about the coaching change. It was a mutual decision decided before the USO, they are still friends, and will work together when James is in Connecticut.

Shanghai draw is out --> James gets Karlovic in R1. If he can manage to win that, he gets Nadal in R2 again. OUCH! OUCH! OUCH! :help: :drink:

James is also playing doubles with John Isner. :) They will face Parrott/Polasek in R1.

Cool! :yeah: I know for James, playing Karlovic is about as much fun as playing Hewitt, Roddick, or Gonzo. So a win against Dr. Ivo should be good for his confidence. :)

James plays doubles tomorrow - last match on Court 4.

Well a couple of weeks on, I think James showed encouraging form against Rafa. He can hopefully build on it. The fact he's got another coach means he's clearly not giving up just yet which I'm glad. :)

looking at h2h against Rafa, i think that James is one of these player who know how to play with Nadal... but it isn't enought to win. There are still 2 tournaments to play, so I hope James will achieve something big;) even if he does not, i'll be waiting for his 2010 season;)

James plays Chardy on Wednesday not before 4pm or following the Cilic/Petzschner match. I think that would be 10am ET.

BTW, the ATP website now has Brian Barker as his coach again. Wonder why they changed it back and forth? I noticed that 2 days ago. The "personal" info on there about the coaching situation hasn't been changed. I figured it was some sort of error. It seems a lot of players profiles have errors - things not being updated especially (like listing a coach a player dumped a year ago ).

James lost to Chardy 6-7(4) 7-6(6) 4-6. :p
Chardy was serving well (a lot of aces) and James couldn't make a dent into it. James' 8 DF's (4 in the 3rd set) didn't help. I noticed James was wearing a knee brace again...
