Not a bad draw, I would say. But what does it mean.... It would be kind of an miracle if Marat can pass the first round, not to speak to go further. Lets hope he can do it this time!

the last time they played was January this year at the Hopman Cup and Marat won in 3 tough sets. I was at that match and he played so well...though at that time of the year he was doing much better than he is now *sigh*...anyway, let's wait and see...

As always I think a hard first round is good for Marat. I just hope he thinks it's a difficult hurdle too and concentrates really hard. But I'm confident he does.
Last week Novak struggled past Björkman and lost easily to Hewitt if I see the scores, but that doesn't really tell that much, now does it?

Yeah, that doesn't really tell much Lilly! I thought last week he would get past tired Kiefer but with the rain day see what happened!!!!!
BTW, Because of Nalby's injury Marat won't play doubles! They were replaced by Bogomolov Jr/Tursunov. Dunno if that's good or not!

Hewitt, Safin renew focus Former No.1s show old form

By Neil Schmidt Enquirer staff writer

MASON - Tennis is as much about motivation as muscle. Lleyton Hewitt and Marat Safin both have plenty of punch, but their hearts haven't always played along.

Hewitt had off-court matters both good (romance with Kim Clijsters) and bad (suing the ATP Tour), and from No. 1 he fell out of the top 10. Safin admits a couple years as a playboy distracted him, and injury followed to knock him from No. 1 to 77.

Both are back. Their meeting today in the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters promises to be the hardest-hitting quarterfinal.

"I feel like I've got better and better with every match," Hewitt said.

Hewitt cautioned that he's not predicting a surge to the summit. "I'm just trying to win matches at the moment," he said.

Safin cued a similar soundtrack.

"It's not so easy to come back ... and all of a sudden become No. 1 in the world.

"If you don't play for (most of) a year, you're losing that touch, you're losing that feeling. ... And you need to bring it back."

Hewitt is perhaps a bit closer to top form. He has reached the quarterfinals in six of his last seven tournaments. The exception was a round-of-16 loss last week in Tennis Masters Canada. He is ranked 10th in the world.

He hasn't lost a set this week, and he blasted No. 5 seed Tim Henman 6-1, 6-4 Thursday.

"I think after his two good years where he was No. 1 and then, by his standard, his game sort of dropped off a little bit, there's been sort of a focus on some others," Henman said. "And I wouldn't be surprised now if he really starts making a big surge toward the top again."

Hewitt and Safin have split their eight career meetings, though they haven't played since 2002.

Safin, who's ranked 14th, has not lost any service games this week, joining Andy Roddick as the only players in the field who can claim that.

"He's got a great game," Hewitt said of Safin. "He's obviously got a lot of power. He can hit winners from everywhere.

I haven't seen the match, so I have really no right to speak but Hewitt has the style of play to drive opponents mad by bringing virtually all balls back - his main weapon actually. Certain people are more susceptible to that than others. *cough*marat*cough*

When he seems to be not trying, he's often trying too hard to get that brilliance that just isn't there every working day.

ok sometimes he hardly tries.

some views on the match from safinator messageboard

well, what can you say? too many UE's (26-27 of them) for my money, but overall didn't play that badly, hewitt was just playing rock solid, and marat was going for too much and missing. his backhand was flying on him a bit. hewitt's 1st serve %age was something like 45%, and marat was standing 6-7 feet behind the baseline for those 2nd serves, and never quite made the adjustment to step into the court. a laugh ot loud moment at 5-4, 15-15: mal lectures for 15 min how marat should stand inside the baseline for those 2nd serve meatballs, " see right there, he's 5 ft behind the baseline and is not able to do mu...." marat hits a screaming fh return winner from 8 ft behind the baseline. lol pretty funny....also pretty entertaining as per usual. marat to the umpire," after the match, you'll see on TV that it was out, and you'll come to me and say i'm sorry." lol

Really disappointing performance from Marat... I don't think he believed that he could win this match. From the beginning he was asleep for half of the first set, then he woke up a little bit but only his negative side showed up. He was cursing badly in russian on wind and his first serve... I mean there was no determination or energy and from the first point I could tell he is going to struggle in this match. Hewitt was typical Hewitt only serving badly.. Marat gave away breaks and didn't take chances on Hewitt serve. Maryann, I agree that it is still a step forward, keeping in mind he wasn't in quaters since April, but still I did not expect this "sleepy" performance from him. Conditions were tough but he's gotta learn how to deal with it. Anyway, hoping this tournament will be a stepping stone for US Open.

Aurora
08-06-2004, 08:31 PM
Interesting stuff, Andrea. No energy no determination, no will to win. Been there, done that. Somewhere in the back of my mind I keep hoping his approach to certain matches will change, but at the same time I don't wanna change his character.
Perhaps a(n even) lighter schedule is an answer, like Agassi did some time. Focusing on not too many tournaments, especially the slams. Maybe it puts him under the right pressure to focus for all matches in the row needed to win a tournament. The Australian got me thinking of that, I used to consider him a player with a diesel motor needing lots of warmup. Of course, if that goes wrong, it'll go terribly wrong.
I don't know, I'm not terribly good at analyzing this stuff. I just do that now 'cause I got no live-feed.

holagirl56
08-06-2004, 08:37 PM
It was sad, because Marat could have broken him right back after Hewitt broke him, there were way too many inforced errors and Marat didn't have enough motivation and desire as Hewitt did to win.

I think Marat could have done better, but it's good that he made it to the QF's this time.
