Only three weeks to go before the start of the new season - fingers crossed that Mario is fit, healthy and happy! :D

He's done pretty well over 2008, finishing the year ranked #36 despite various injury scares throughout the year. He made the Wimbledon quarterfinals (l. to Federer) and the finals of Marseilles (l. to Murray).

With a new coach (Ivica :D) in his corner, I think we're all pretty curious to see how 2009 will pan out for him. Good luck Mario!

Nothing special :p I was watching Jarkko practice with Nalbandian and also Melo/Sa vs Matkowski/Fyrstenberg and Mario strolled in because he was scheduled to use the courts after that. Hardly anyone was around and the ones who were didn't seem to notice him.

So I went up to him and asked if I could have a photo, and he agreed.

I stood next to him, and Kristen from MTF, who's taking the picture, exclaimed: "Whoaaaa.. Height difference."

And I was like, "I know - hobbit :o"

(For the record, my height is 160cm :o)

So I moved around to his right side where the ground's a bit higher (hey, anything counts :p) and Mario sort of leant down a bit so our heads could at least get into the same frame :o

At the time I registered, that was all that was needed and I can still watch without giving any credit card info. Whew, what can I say!

I wandered to the practice courts after watching a doubles match. I turned around and Mario was right behind me! He looked like he was in a hurry and took off his shirt :aplot: before hitting with Ivica. My guess is that he didn't realise that Safina's match would end so quickly and put off warming up until it was too late.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3444/3190511855_4c8ac8e83e.jpg?v=0

A crowd of fans started to form. Mario shot looks at them several times and he left via the gate at the other end of the court - which leads straight into the players' compound. Some of the fans exclaimed out loud: "How rude!" but - honestly - that dude's got a match on Centre Court now  Give him a break.

For the first set of the match, Malisse couldn't put a foot wrong. He ripped winners left and right, and his groundstrokes were so heavy. You could hear the thump! as the ball comes off his racquet and Mario's shots sounded so feeble in comparison.

Mario started serving better in the second set and Malisse lost his way for a while before he reverted to his crazy ripping-winners self just in time to break Mario when he served for the second set at 5-4.

The tiebreak was insane :hysteric: Mario had what looked like two clean down-the-line winners that were called out :armed: I was about to :timebomb: when he finally won the tiebreak after what felt like a bajillion set points

Malisse just went kaboom after losing the second set and he never got back into it mentally. Mario's the one who could do no wrong in the third set: he served and volleyed more frequently (stop this ridiculous baseline rallying, Mario, no-one can pass you at the net and you know it ) and had some crazy winners.

When he finally converted the match point I was like  :worship:  :sobbing: aaaah, and he threw his sweatband to some kids behind his chair

Thanks for your report! I remember watching his match in Brisbane (against Verdasco) and he tried to rally with Verdasco... it was so frustrating! Serve and volley for him would be a lot better, although.... I have bad memories of his match at Aus Open (a couple of years ago now, I think) against David Ferrer. Ferrer would hit passing shots constantly and Mario could do nothing about them! ARGH.

mario said on the video interview yesterday on sidney's tournaments web site that he is healthy and in the best fitness of his career so can win against verdasco from baseline(he was soo great on ao 2007 from baseline),he just need matches.

also he was great from baseline in spring 2006(beat robredo on RG,than robredo was in super form(he had the most wins on clay),and robredo was career best no. 7)).

why have you made three posts mate?you could easily just put it all in one:worship:;)
anyways, he is in great fitness no doubt, but he just lacks matches, and his top physical form is maybe here, but his top game has yet to be developed trough real action on court....anyhow, step by step, if he'll stay healthy, then everything else will come.just that darn health, made him so much problems....I can just imagine what success he'd have in last two years if he was non-stop healthy, he'd be in top 5 for sure!Lets see what he'll bring to the game in future.Wish him all the best!

Oh, ok, you have a good reason :p ;)
He started great, with a break in the opening game. At 3:1 he had 7 BPs to increase his lead, but Nole held, and that was crucial for the 1st set. Djoko won 4 more games to take it 6:3. Similar in the 2nd. Mario had 5 BPs in the second game, Nole held, and made a break in the next...

3:6 4:6

Good luck at AO Mario!

i only watched last two games, well, he cheared himself bigtime hoping for a turnaround, when nole was serving for a match, like he always does, but i don't know what he was doing earlier in the match.anyhow, he maybe choked a bit, but move on, another match to add this year.health, health, health, and nothing more!he'll be alright!

Didn't get to watch beyond the 1st rain delay (1st set and a couple of games I think?) but overall it was pretty disappointing, can't say that he didn't get his chances but Nole was pretty solid. That BP conversion rate is :o, though.

Yes, I agree at least he's fully fit and healthy. :yeah: Hopefully he can have a decent AO!

oranges
01-16-2009, 01:55 AM
I watched the entire match and drank unbelievable amounts of coffee to stay awake during those rain delays (had to see some matches that were during the night here too). On the bright side, he looks in very good shape and it's probably the most important thing for now, but I really hope that strategy is not what he intends to play at AO. I was seriously pissed at times  FFS come forward at least when you hit a return that blows him off court and he scrambles to even get his racket on it, if for some strange reason you don't mix it up even without such opportunities.

What can say, I'm starved for some Mario acrobatics :D What little he played since Wimbledon, he hasn't really been himself and looked more fit for bed than the court. It's great to see him fit and healthy again, but you're an all-courter who grew up playing S/V. Good to see he has his chances against the likes of Djokovic just baseline rallying, but you played RG QF playing your game, surely you can do it on hard, pliiiiiiiz :help:

Actually, considering their well known not getting along and Ivo's motivation to kick theirs(fellows in a DC team)***, I actually think Ivo might be the winner in that clash.
Last time they played on hard court,in Zagreb Indoors Open, Karlovic beat Ancic, easily.
I would ofcourse want Mario to win, but lets take it round by round. For both of them.

01-19-2009, 01:40 AM
I don't think Ivo has 5 wins over top 50 players in any GS in all the years and Mario isn't going to be one of them, no discussion ;)
BTW, two TBs is hardly easily. You must be mistaking it with Mario's win in Stockholm 6:2 6:3 or something like that. :p

Karlovic beat Mario in Zagreb Indoors, well it was 2 years ago though, and yes it was 7:6, 7:6..And yes Ivo is really bad in GS, but he had great last season, with wins over Federer and Djokovic.
I know Mario is the better player, no doubt there, but considering his yet to be found form, and their rivalry I wouldn't put my money on Ancic like for sure.
We'll see.Today he's playing his first round, good luck to him!I hope it won't start like 5am!

Actually, last year Ivo won 3 tournaments, and all of them with wins like 6:something.Also when Ivo won Stockholm he won it with 6:3 3:6 6:1....and many other wins where it wasn't 7:6 7:6 win, so that's changed. He mos def like everybody on tour can break the opponent. And actually Mario was in better form in 2006 when he lost to Ivo then he is today.
But we'll see.

mario was play really good from mai of that year.

oh yes, he won three tournaments in 07' indeed, but still continued to improve his form in 08'.
Anyhow I was trying to say not when he won those tournaments but how he did, and emphasize the wins with 6:something.
That was my point, and that's the fact, showing he indeed can break others. Infact that's not even the case, cause ANYONE ON TOUR CAN BREAK WHAT EVER OPPONENT.
As Ivo came into top 20 last year, he mos def proved he improved and can break anybody.
Mario was in much better form in 2006 then now.
Heck, we don't even know in which form he is now, but with just three matches in a year, or so, his form is yet to be developed.
And Mario played bad in 06 Zagreb match, as in many matches in his career. But Ivo played well, and basicly outplayed Mario.
So that can happen again.
Mario is the favorite just because of his better success in Grand Slams in general.

Aside for giving that first set, it was not bad. For a change, he played an allcourt game, which is what he needs to play if he's to win over higher ranked guys (not that he has any need not to play it against anyone), won over 70 percent net points, returned superbly. Not too shabby at all.

with this baseline play he will collects just games against simon, unfortunately.
but he can win with service-volleys,but his ball must be deeper and stronger when he running on net because simon is very quick and has great passing.i think simon will win.

returns,play on net,service was good.
baseline(today the most you need when you play tennis) was really poor.balls like that simon will convert in winners easily.

Well, you don't get much rhythm playing Karlo. He stood his ground against Djokovic from the baseline, except when he needed to convert those BPs ;) I'm not willing to give up on the match with Simon, even though he's not yet as sharp as when in top form. This is a GS after all, he tends to find a gear or two more when playing slams compared to small tournies or masters.

yes you are right,he played good from baseline against djokovic but with that balls on service-line he can do nothing.this match was fullof rhythm (he had just 2-3 winners from baseline against karlovic).i am wooried thas he has enough power because of mono.what do you think abot that question?

He looks in excellent shape to me. The last match was a 5-setter, but not that long

Ah, you meant he doesn't have enough power for groundies, I really don't think so.

We'll have to wait and see how it goes against Simon. Hoping for the best, it's certainly not beyond him if he plays well. Second week would be huge for him as a start of the season, some nice points and a good confidence boost. Even if not, I'm happy he's healthy and playing (as long as he doesn't enter the living-strictly-on-the-baseline mode ). Form and confidence will come then and with them good results.
