Australian Open gives one wildcard to Asian champion - ifI can recall Soeda and Istomin played AO with WC in previous years.

Soeda or Hyung-Taik should get it.

Hyung-Taik Lee's ranking may give him direct entry to AO if there's enough withdrawl.

I agree. Also give TH Yang one for the qualies.

When you have Asian Games, the winner gets the WC, since it's not played every year I think it's decided by the organizers - maybe they pick the first Asian in alternates list, but I really don't know if the player is picked by the Aussies or by the Asian Tennis Federation - also US and France have 1 WC each one.

I could find this about the Asian spot:

The Asian wildcard was introduced in 1997, offering a maindraw berth for one man and one woman outside the entry cut-off but within the top 200. (Xinhua)

but it's from 1999

Didn't the Asian Tennis Federation (or whatever it's called) end its affiliation with the AO earlier this year? I think I remember something like that happening. If so, do they even still have a wildcard?

I really don't know, but at their website they still have the slogan "The Grand Slam of Asia/Pacific", so

With three of the eight men's wildcards destined for Asian, French and US players, five wildcards are notionally free for locals.

btw, shouldn't the entry list be out by now?

It's weird how little transparency there is over this WC

Usually it is given to the winner of a tournament that has been held in Tashkent the last few years. I haven't heard anything about the tournament this year though.

It wasn't played this year. The WC should go to either Istomin, Lee or Soeda.

I think Istomin will make it with a direct entry. His ranking is #105, and the cut-offs in previous years were around or lower than that (2008 - 111, 2007 - 105, 2006 - 116).

Lee, though I think he'll qualify easily and would be a dangerous opponent in the MD, is too old for a WC in my opinion. It should go to Soeda :yeah:

^the cut-off might be higher this year with 4 protected ranking players in

Imo it would be wrong if Istomin had to play qualifying while Soeda gets the WC

Hasn't Istomin had the WC before though? I don't really think he had a better season than Soeda

Anyways, Denis needs five withdrawals. I think that's not too implausible.

istomin had a way better than soeda

it was second round in a few atp tourneys and some challengers
not to mention losing in 4 sets to hewitt down under

istomin will get the WC if not in directly!!!
