Since Malisse is only 20th, I guess he will never be on the MD directly... But there's quite a big chance he'll play quallies right?

Good question. Bangalore was cancelled last year for a minor reason. Chennai is far away from Mumbai but still... If I was a player I doubt that I would like to go to India at the moment.

Visa delay forces Aisam to opt out of Chennai Open

KARACHI: Pakistan tennis star Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi on Saturday dropped plans to take part in the Chennai Open after he failed to get an Indian visa on time.

"The Indian high commission didn't refuse me a visa but they told me they can't issue it before a month," a disappointed Aisam said.

He was only 40th alternate anyway... And looking at the political situation in India right now, would it be clever for a Pakistani to play in India if he could also choose Doha or Brisbane?? This really looks like someone blew this whole thing up to cause some attention for the political stuff going on down there.

ImmzB

Qureshi should go to the Doha Qualys now.
He could choose Brisbane with the Australian Open Qualys coming after that!
Hope he goes to either Doha or Brisbane!!

With Doha and Brisbane being Sign In- For Qualifying he could easily get in if he goes to Doha or Brisbane!

It doesnt really matter what rank u r if u sign in your in the Qualy draw right??

No. The draw is a fixed size, but you will find that more players sign up at the venue than there are spots. So even if he signs in, he is not guaranteed to play, if there are too many players with a higher ranking.

Thanks I thought that might be a problem.,If he doesnt get in the qualyfying draw Doha may give him a WC into the Qualy Draw. Dubai gave him a WC into the Qualy Draw but then he didnt play.

Flavio will be out. He didn't get the necessary visa and will head to Doha instead.

Seems like there could be more visa problems with players still on the list.

I can understand why this tournament is unpopular, security issues, risk of bad reaction to food etc.

I wouldn't be surprised to see more withdrawals even from some of the better names.

Security to be tightened for Chennai Open

NEW DELHI, Dec 29 (Reuters) - Security will be tightened ahead of next week's Chennai Open ATP tennis tournament following the militant attacks in Mumbai, a tournament official said on Monday.

Independent security consultant Reg Dickason will inspect the venue in the southern city for the Jan. 5-11 event and the players will receive a briefing.

"In the wake of the Mumbai events and the various travel advisories put out by countries, one is being careful in terms of security," the official, who did not wish to be identified, told Reuters.

Security concerns have heightened following last month's three-day siege in India's financial capital which killed 179 people.

England's cricket team suspended their tour following the attacks but returned after they were given tight security, including commando protection, and the test matches were shifted out of the original venues.

Russian world number five Nikolay Davydenko heads the field in the $450,000 event that also features Spain's former number one Carlos Moya, a previous winner in Chennai.

Yes, there are always some retirements as well as Western players are ill-suited to Indian food standards.

It kind of sucks that Flavio can't get the visa to work, as it seems he might be getting a direct entry and a better chance to get a win here than in Doha. I see he hasn't officially withdrawn yet, so maybe he's still trying.
