Only a few weeks to go now! I hope the transport will be ok (or they have free parking - am I dreaming?) otherwise I still have no idea how to get there!

:wavey: no i'm going to give the AO a miss this year! the last two years the crowds had been growing so much, and with that heat, it just felt like hell

though i've heard that summer in brisbane can also be very hot. but do i have to prepare for 40+ deg??

isn't the venue near some train station? i'll be staying ... :secret: well somewhere closer to the city.

hmmm I actually don't think it's as hot as Melbourne, at least this year it wasn't. The past years I haven't been around.

But I don't really live near a train station (a 10 min drive?) and the Brisbane train system isn't that good? Don't want to be stranded somewhere!

i don't live near a train station either, though it's close to the city. i drive anyway to homebush every year. changing buses and trains just takes too long. sydney transport is pretty hopeless.

well let's hope that brisbane trains are dependable if not anything else! when it's a strange place i take whatever i get, i won't realise it's slow or whatever. by the time i do, i'd be gone.

I just found this link: http://www.brisbaneinsummer.com.au/MajorEvents/Tennis/

No public parking will available during the event and the use of public transport is highly recommended.

 Grrrrrr. This is annoying. I would hate leaving my car at the train station all day, especially if I have to go to night matches...

so they forgot to build a car park. maybe there's parking a few blocks away? of course they won't encourage you to disturb the neighbours :o

ohhh the prices for the early days aren't too bad.... I thought the final was sold out but there're still a few tickets left...

I haven't got any tickets yet, have you Via? Apparantly I'm going to be volunteering in "Technology" (is that what you've done in the past???) but I have no idea what's happening... it's only 3 shifts so not too fuzzed, and shouldn't affect too much on my other "fangirl" duties!!! :D

Via
12-24-2008, 09:10 PM
oh yes i have two tickets for two days. in case i need to seek shelter with a reserved seat, i think

yes technology was what i did in sydney! only 3 shifts?? that's lucky. with all volunteering we got to the stage where we either did 5+, or don't bother! it was popular, i don't understand why. the uniform's ugly, and (for technology) we had a tiny bunker for a rest area.

so make sure you have time left for fangirling! :)

Im coming!! Im a fellow brisbane-ite :D
I dont actually know anyone coming though - my only friends in brisbane that like tennis are either away elsewhere on holidays or went and got married last week and will be on their honeymoon. pfft!

donno if any of you have checked out the website recently but there is now parking going to be available at the golf club across the road - 15$ per session. im thinking this is much better than public transport cos im going to be there from 9am to the end of the night session

krystlel

That's really expensive though, in comparison to the free public transport. Although public transport would be a bit of a hassle having to change buses/trains at some point to get there.

Yeah, the transport issue sucks. I was thinking of driving to the city then catch public transport there. But parking in the city area still costs at least $10 a day, but I guess it's better than leaving my car at the local train station.

I'm going tomorrow afternoon - can't wait to check out the facilities!!

i'm counting on the hotel people to tell me how to get there. i have a licence to look dumb. :p

that's great, as the first tournament of the year (even earlier than doha and chennai, officially) players arrive early and more relaxed. hope you'll have some luck spotting stars, kat!

After the trip to the centre yesterday I have to say it's actually a bit smaller than I had thought. They probably concentrated on building a greater number of courts, rather than create more room for people to move around. I'm not sure what the official "measurements" are, but size-wise, it's nothing compared to Sydney, and even Adelaide. If anyone plans to get practice photos you'll be disappointed because there's no space for spectators in between most of the practice courts, so you can only see them behind a fence!

Also, everything seems to be cramped, and on one side it's directly looking at a power station! They really should've made more space for what they're trying to build. The centre court itself is good, you can probably get a good view even from the back rows.

That aside I didn't stay long but saw Gasquet practicising with Stepanek on centre court, also Nieminen with Melzer outside. (Heaps more women were practicising, except for Hantchuhova and Safarova I didn't know who the rest of them were!)

yeah i was pretty disappointed with those things too when i went out there. and also the fact that the website made the two outside show courts sound like they were totaly under cover, but its just the court thats undercover, not the stands. and the stands arnt even real stands, they're temporary seats put up on the court next door!

also the brisbane river is pretty revolting to look at and i could even smell it from some parts of the tennis center so that wasnt great either.

i was pretty impressed with the center court though. i walked up to the back row and could still see fine and it wasnt really hot in there at all - it actually had a nice breeze. im heading out there tomorrow for the grand opening ceremony thing and then ill work out if ill hang around after i find out how hot it is. today was ridiculous!!!

well at least i won't probably complain about having to walk too much  nice arrangements for retirees from the coast

that reminds me, it would be similar if they'd move the aus open to glebe island, new south wales, as suggested some time last year

It's kind of annoying how the players get to play under shade covers, while we have to be fully exposed to the sun. There aren't a lot of seats at all on both show courts, only on one side. Hopefully it won't get filled up too quickly, but I get the feeling it will be. There are going to be far more people buying grounds passes than the number of total seats allocated considering its cheap price so there's the chance of people (like me) not being able to watch anything.

The centre court is very nice, though. It's not large at all, although it looks less impressive as soon as someone sits right in front blocking my view.

Ohhh yes, for those who're sick of walking around in the sun, this is perfect! There is only really one side you need to concentrate on, and I'm sure there'll be heaps of kiddies standing around the front of the centre court (where the players come out etc) and that part is shaded! :worship:

I agree with krystlel too here, there's going to be way too many ppl and the stands just won't fit them all. On the first few days if they put matches on the "other courts" (non-show courts, crt 14 & 16???) those courts don't even have seats! Kinda reminds me of Adelaide

Yeah the draw will be made tomorrow at noon at Queen St Mall. I was planning to go except I forgot that I was rostered on Saturday!

btw does any one know if there are internet cafes around south bank?

Can't remember any off the top of my head, southbank is really, two streets where there's activity and the rest is pretty quiet. There may be a computer at the convenience store??? but best bet is the CBD anyway....

not sure if anyone is interested, but the officials are being extremely helpful.

i got ridiculously sunburnt yesterday and was considering not going today. then i decided to ring them and ask if/when robin/magnus were practising today. they told me they'll be on court 5 at 11am and centre court at 6pm. how cool is that? now i know it will be worth going cos ill see them :)

Dunno about onsite, but if you buy online Ticketek will email you the e-ticket, so you don't need to collect it or whatever.

Here's the OOP for tomorrow: http://www.brisbaneinternational.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/op1.pdf

Centre court: Kirilenko vs Stosur, Gasquet vs Gicquel and Bartoli vs Wejnert.

I'm not going tomorrow but I saw the schedule and was thinking the same thing. The Querrey-Soderling match looks like the most interesting match of the day in my opinion. If it was me, I'd schedule it where the Ginepri-Benneteau match is.

Hi I have tickets in section 106 row BB. Does anyone know if that is a 2nd row seat or a 28th row seat? I know at the Australian Open that the double letters are higher up but I bought these as soon as they went on sale and it doesn't look like 28 rows of seats could fit in section 106. I guess I am just curious. Thanks!

Hey, Thanks :)

I actually did, and I owe MASSIVE thanks to the fangirl who helped me out. Once I found out they were moving it to centre court (AGREED thats where it should have been all along!!!) i stood at a door and randomly asked people if they were leaving. almost everyone ignored me, a few people said no and finally one girl said "yes i am" and i asked to buy her ticket. she ended up actually just giving it to me for free which i thought was REALLY nice and her mum gave kat hers. maybe the entire swedish outfit gave away how much i wanted to be there

kat, you missed an awesome match, i hope you got to see ancic in the end :) all the kids in the row infront of us ended up joining in my cheering, despite them not knowing which one was soderling  and after he won he looked up at us and waved and gave us thumbs up, HOW COOL IS THAT?!!!

i'm not hating the outside courts that much after all. one gets used to it. and there's one thing - i never had trouble finding some shade around the grounds. the centre court is great, love the roof. and the fabric seats in the corporate boxes.

of course they can always find a way to put some real seats at courts that host matches... but we've been through this already and i don't want to be going on and on... :o
