Rafa isn't playing Shanghai:
I have decided not to compete on the Masters Cup in Shanghai. As I say this is one of the most difficult decisions in my career due to the importance of the event and above all, due to the fact of not making possible my will to be with the fans in China and the tournament organizers that always treated me in such special way.
Hmmm. Sad news (at least for me) but a wise decision from Rafa. Health comes first!

I have no doubts that it is his knee injury still bothering him. I can't possibly imagine him faking some injury in order to pull out from such an important tournament. Hope he'll be fine for the DC final.

It's a good move for Nadal. He has a clear lead and he'll be safe until the clay season. If he has another clay season like he's always had, then he'll have a good shot at finishing #1 next year as well and will have a chance to add points from the TMC. The only downside for him is that if he does mess up at one of the big tournaments, he won't have the buffer from the year-end points in case it's a close race. He wasn't going to risk his DC chances in any way.
I think Fed will be fine for TMC.

Is the finals best of 3 this year ? I'm worried if that is the case. Roger has been vulnerable in 3 setters lately. If it's best of 5, I'm pretty confident of Rog winning his 5th TMC.

It's random, so 50% chance that Davydenko will be in Roger's group. However, being in the same group doesn't mean that two players can't be in the final; most of Roger's finals have been against players that he already played at the round robin stage.

Difficult group for Roger to have all the players in his half who have beaten him this season. We have seen how dangerous Muzza is for Roger and although Roger has a comfortable h2h against Roddick we should never underestimate him. Beside the fact that he has beaten Roger this year (well, that was the case with several players :awww: ), we shouldn't forget that he had MP's against him 2 years ago in their encounter in Shanghai. Simon had a great season and nothing to lose in the Masters Cup. It's good that Roger has played against him, so that he knows now what to expect from him.

I wish I knew who's responsible for this and WHY???, Minnie... like you say, it doesn't make any sense at all. If I understood correctly, the 5-set finals in the Master series tournaments were brought back to 3 sets because of it being too demanding for the players as these tournaments are mandatory - but for the TMC... it's the bloody LAST tournament in the schedule, the players have some six weeks off thereafter (apart from possible DC ties, of course)!
Now that Mr. Disney is finally gone, I really hope this will be restored next year.
Tsonga has just won in Paris - beating Djokovic on his way to his first Masters title -, Davydenko won one earlier in the season and Del Potro had a great run during the last months, so they are no clowns ;)
Djokovic hasn't been impressive for quite a while now, but as he didn't won any match in Shanghai last year he can only improve this time.

No problem :)

Did Roger have a hair cut? It looks like he has trimmed it. Nevetheless most importantly he said the backs getting better. :yeah:

Injured Federer cautious over Masters
November 8, 2008
Top seed Roger Federer said he was still taking painkillers and limiting himself in training as he battles to shake off a back injury that could jeopardise his Masters Cup defence.
Federer, who pulled out of last week's Paris Masters quarter-finals with the problem, said his condition had improved but he didn't know if he was 100 per cent fit.
"I haven't been pushing it to the very limits because I want to give my back the maximum time of recuperation," he said.
"Then we will see on Monday what's going to happen. But so far I've been serving without pain, I've been playing without pain and that's definitely a very good sign."
The Swiss world number two opens against Britain's Andy Murray on Monday as he bids for his third consecutive Masters Cup title and his fifth overall.
The 'fifth Grand Slam,' featuring the top eight players, has already lost world number one Rafael Nadal, who pulled out citing fatigue and tendinitis, while Argentine seventh seed Juan Martin del Potro is nursing a chronic big toe injury.
Chinese were angry in 2005 when Nadal, Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt and Marat Safin all withdrew.
Serena Williams and Ana Ivanovic have both pulled out of the equivalent women's tournament in Doha with a stomach injury and virus respectively.
Federer said he was hopeful that he would recover but admitted he was concerned the problem could flare up again if he pushed too hard in training.
"Maybe if I push too early in practice then I'm back to where I was last Thursday and then things are not looking good at all," he said.
"I think this problem I have with my back needs as much time as possible. Hopefully I'm just going to get ready for Monday and then things are going to be fine."
Federer has a superb record at the Masters Cup, reaching the last five finals and losing only one, when he was struggling with an ankle injury against David Nalbandian in 2005.
Victory would complete the first year-end title hat-trick since Ivan Lendl in 1985-1987 and bring a positive end to a season in which he lost his number one ranking and five-year Wimbledon streak.
"I've been able to practice without pain. I'm just being cautious as normal. I don't want to have any setbacks I'm just trying to keep myself in shape so I'm ready for Monday," Federer said.
World number three Novak Djokovic and del Potro play the first match on Sunday with Nikolay Davydenko facing Jo-Wilfried Tsonga later. Andy Roddick is against Gilles Simon in Monday's second match.
The Masters Cup is making its fourth and final appearance at Shanghai's futuristic Qi Zhong Stadium before moving to London as the ATP World Tour Final.
Why do they mention in here that Roger plays against Murray on Monday?

i'm a bit worried by those comments about the back and he's still taking painkillers - and i think the tournament would normally open with Roger playing .. but someone (Roger?) wanted it moved a day later
i dont feel so good about how this week might go for him now

:bigcry: he never admits to having something wrong, unless there's something very wrong... I can't take him losing to Simon again.

Well... I've seen quite some contradicting reports concerning that back injury. It might just been reported a mite too dramatic in some of them. At least I hope so!
It's not like Roger has this for the first time in his life - in his biography "Quest for Perfection", it's mentioned very often that he's been having that and/or played with painkillers. So I keep on having good hopes for this tournament. :)

Oh God no Claire, :wavey: that would be atrocious. :scared: I can accept losing to Murray but to Simon and Roddick that just does not register with me. :tape: :o Watch me jinx him now.
Edit and those losses this year to them just did not happen, he even had matchpoints or close enough.

Roger's group played on the 2nd day last year too. Nadal's group played on day 1. I think the #1 seed's group always starts later, though I can't remember who played first in 2006.

I refuse to join in with any doom + gloom around here. What happens, happens. Watching Roger over the past 5 years or more and reading how he looks forward has given me a different perspective in my own life. One thing I have learnt from reading what he says is to continually see the glass half-full, rather than half empty ... I know that if he doesn't win the TMC, he'll be disappointed for a brief while, then look forward to 2009 - and so will I.
Btw, I'm pulling for Suktuen to get her photo with Roger - lucky girl.

I hope Rog's back gets better soon. I'm slightly worried about whether it might become a long term problem for him. I seriously hope not. :(

From what I heard, he practiced with local players twice. The commentator in this video said he wasn't happy with his backhand. It is so funny how mirka ignored him when he talks to her. :rolls:
It would be great if he could end the year on a high note with a title win here but whatever the outcome, I just hope he doesn't aggravate anything. After the setbacks he's had this year, I'm anxious to see him totally healthy and fit next season. Do your best Rogi!

His back has been troubling him on-and-off for at least five years now, as can clearly be read from Rene Stauffer's biography. As he's managed to deal with this problem during the past five years, I have good hopes he will be in the future as well. Of course, he's not getting any younger, so this may be doubtful - but I think we should look at the positive side of things.
Like Minnie said already - too much doom & gloom, here!

i hate being the pessimistic one but the combo of Fed not being 100% healthy, not preparing at his best for a tournament and having a group with 2 tough match ups for him (Murray and Simon) is not good
he really needs to start with the win tonight
