Roger is playing some nice points. So, he doesn't look excited like a bumble bee.......is he required to be excited in every one of his matches?? It's the end of the year.......it has been a tiresome year and he is probably looking forward to his vacation. But, he is out there fulfilling his job requirements. And, hopefully, he will win this match.

I really don't see what you guys are chatting about...........Roger looks just fine to me. He doesn't seem to be worried about Stepanek and is doing what he needs to do, and nothing more, to win this match:shrug: :shrug:I hope your right. elessar

EDITED : if Roger beats Murray he directly qualifies.
He can be nr1 of his group if:
-Simon loses to Stepanek and Roger beats Murray (in two or three sets doesn't matter)
-Smon beats Stepanek in three and Roger beats Murray in two
-Simon beats Stepanek in three and Roger beats Murray in three but he ends up with a better games W/L ration than Murray
-Simon beats Stepanek in two and Roger beats Murray in three but ends up with a better games W/L ration than Murray AND Simon
-Simon beats Stepanek in two and Roger beats Murray in two (he wins by set ratio)

My head hurts :o

trickcy
11-12-2008, 02:18 PM
if Roger beats Andy in 2 (:spit:) he qualifies automatically because Murray will be 2-1 and Simon can at best be 2-1 too so it'd be down to ratio of sets lost/won. and Roger would have won two matchs in straight and lost one match in three sets.

If Simon loses to Stepanek, all Roger has to do to qualify is to beat Murray.

Thanks Claire :)

Well then.. beating Andy in straights is a tough ask, to say the least But he has to beat him anyway to qualify...

wait Claire...

can Roger go through in any way if Simon loses to Radek tomorrow ???

elessar
11-12-2008, 02:24 PM
If Simon loses tomorrow he'll be 1-2, Murray will be 2-1 or 3-0, Stepanek will be 1-1.
So if Roger then beats Murray he qualifies top of his group, but if he loses he'll be 1-2 like Simon, so it'll be down to their head to head and Simon would go through.

Bottom line is, if Roger beats Murray he's through no matter what, if he doesn't he's out.

if Roger beats Murray he is definitely through, because even if he wins in 3, and Simon wins in 2, he'd have a better set ratio :
He'd be +2 in sets W/L, while Simon would be +1, and Murray would also be +2.
So Simon would be out.
nono cause then murray would also be 2:1 and h2h with fed he would lose.

fed has to win to qualify....if he loses hes out.
It doesn't work like that, if the three of them end up being 2-1 since Roger lost to Simon who lost to Murray who lost to Roger.
It'd be down to Set ratios like I said. Since Simon couldn't possibly get a better set ration than Murray and Roger, so Simon would be out, and only then would head to head matter to see who qualified at the top of his group.

Roger might really regret his missed chances against Simon :o

I don't expect that Murray will play a gear slower against Roger though he has already qualified for the SF. He will surely be interested in kicking Roger out of the tournament.

Andy is already a difficult match-up for Roger when Roger is healthy, but unfortunately Roger doesn't feel good these days and so the match will be even more difficult.

We have to give Roger credit for going out on the court and trying his best although all circumstances this week seem to be against him. Let's hope Roger recovers from his stomach problems and is able to play against Andy.

Hi there... :wavey:

Well... what a sad performance this was. At least I know now he's not okay at all, so that explains at least *why*. Stupid Dutch commentator (Theo Bakker) had NO CLUE at all, kept on muttering and grumbling about how bad Roger was today - obviously adding up to my already splendid mood. NOT.

So he's ill. Well, who agrees with me that he should perhaps withdraw? I don't see him having any chance against Muzza, unless Muzza suddenly falls apart... I'll already give him all the kudo's for showing up there.
Hopefully Stepanek can beat the **** out of Simon, not that it will be of much help anyway.

Unless he feels he isn't able to play he won't withdraw, Mikey :) There's still a chance to qualify for the SF, though Roger has to raise his game. He has shown in the past that he was able to do so, but of course we would all be more optimistic if Roger would feel better as he seems to this week.

Do you remember the scenario from 2 years ago when Roger was already qualified for the SF and many people on MTF said he might tank his match against Ljubicic to avoid to play Nadal in the SF? Roger didn't do so of course. He isn't afraid to play against anyone.

I haven't seen any of Andy's matches this week, but he has already said before the tournament started he would be tired. He has the right attitude in his matches against Roger and to say it clear: He would be stupid not to try to beat Roger.

Murray Quotes

"I'm sure the tournament director would rather I didnt want to win that one," Murray laughed.

"But I think any time you play against Federer, who is probably the greatest player of all time, it is probably a bit disrespectful to not try to win.

"I will give it my best shot. There is a lot of pressure on him to win that match and I will just try to do my best.

"Maybe I will feel too relaxed and I won't play my best because there is not that much pressure on me but, in terms of actually wanting to win the match, not too many people beat three top ten players in the world and go through their group stage in the Masters Cup without losing and I would love to do that."

Roger

Federer revealed afterwards that he had been ill since Monday evening, explaining: "I guess I got really lucky that the match was scheduled late. Then that Andy pulled out made it a little bit more lucky.

"And then Radek is not playing with his own racquets, so that made it a little bit more lucky again," he said.

"At the end of the day I still have a chance. I hope with a day of recovery, I'll make a miracle happen here and get through into the semis."

I agree with injury. And I think if Roger was seriously injured he would NOT be playing. But since it's TMC I can't see stomach flu keeping Roger from playing.

There's a bit more to this I think - if Roger would have retired this day, and as such left the tournament with a 650-points deficit, chances would be rather high that at the end of this week he may have lost his #2 ranking (if Djoko wins the tournament - in such a case, without even doing so going *undefeated* - that would be the case I think).
With just one win on his sleeve that would be just a bit more difficult for Djoko to achieve, as in this case, Djoko will have to go through to win being undefeated.
It might just have played a role why Roger indeed played this match, knowing his opponent would be Steps who hasn't been in form lately either.

Correct me if I'm wrong about this, I think I'm losing clues lately on the rankings (and everything). ;)

I'm sure it isn't the MAIN reason why he played today, but I do think it played a role indeed.

Only a couple of days ago, didn't he say he was 'sick about hearing being the #2' - I'm sure he didn't mean to say 'I'm giving up early so I'll at least won't be #2 anymore - but #3'. :p :p :p

I shall watch the highlights on TV tonight, and please try not to be too sad - anything can happen in tennis :)

But as you notice, the atmosphere here isn't very happy - apparently Roger has gastritis, and he looked just awful today - not just his tennis, but his appearance, too.
Sigh yes :(
He'd have wanted to keep the #2 ranking way from Djokovic, sure, and this is the last tournament of the year, (except for the exho :mad::mad:) and an important one at that, so I suppose he's playing inspite of the problems he has.. I hope it's not something that'll get worse if he plays..

As for Murray going easy on Roger :bigcry: no way is that happening.. He's probably waiting to get some more wins for his revenge against Roger's USO win :awww:

That's the straw I'm clutching onto right now. I once had gastritis because I eat some bad shrimps and the result was two days on the can - but thereafter it was gone. The only bad thing is that you usually lose a lot of weight, and that can't be a good thing for a professional athlete who's expected to be at his best possible physical form...

Thanks for your kind words again - you're right, anything can happen, and "It ain't over till it's over..." :singer: :D

Was over at rf.com and I must say I'm annoyed with the so-called fans who want him to withdraw just so he doesn't get beat by Murray again.

Roger has too much class for that. He played today when he wasn't feeling well, so why would he skip out on Friday when most likely he'll be feeling better? Yeah beating Murray will be tough....but that's not a reason to withdraw.

What rotten luck for him .. he must have felt awful yesterday to consider withdrawing. He's even more my hero now for coming out today when it was obvious from his demeanour and pale face that something was very wrong.

Roger picked up his bag first before signing the camera as though he couldn't wait to get off the court ... he looked pretty pissed off when he signed ... can't blame him.

Karin, Why are you against RR in the masters cup ??:confused:

Would you have preferred Roger to be knocked out due to his loss to Simon ? I think RR is the best format for TMC. That is what makes it special. You have to beat 4 if not 5 opponents in the top 8 to win it.

I agree RR was a stupid for other tournaments. But it makes lot of sense for TMC.

I am against RR in general because it encourages tank jobs and as such fixing matches. Not saying that it happens here, not at all - but that's my GENERAL dislike of it. Also, the whole silly situation with alternates and such... I just don't like it. Each to one's own I guess.

As for Roger to have been knocked out in his first round - well, that's the way the format in a tennis tournament should be, I think - if you lose, you're OUT, as easy as that (I can vaguely remember Roger himself having said quite the same thing ;)). And that can happen to any player not playing well enough to beat his opponent at times, including Roger... and that's also why I think his many victories (57 of 'em! :worship:) are such great achievements. :)

Fair point about tanking and fixing matches. :) eg: Murray tanking against Rog, affects simon.

But one good aspect of RR in TMC is that it mostly ensures the best player wins the tournament, by giving them a chance to recover from an unexpected early loss. Kinda similar to EPL. I like that aspect in TMC. :)

Never too late to celebrate a victory, even an ugly one like today's :yeah:. At least he's managed to get 100 points today, so he won't go out pointless (and as such losing 650 points on the rankings) even if he loses to Muzza coming Friday. That might well mean that he's managed to save his #2 ranking, in case Djoko ends up winning the tournament not undefeated. :D There's always a positive side to things, however dark they may seem... :)

Yes apparently Roger got a stomach bug or something the like. He looked really dreadful out there on court today... I hope he'll be able to get rid of it asap, but I don't expect him to be ready to beat Muzza on Friday, to be honest. But well - miracles DO happen once in a while. :)

It all depends on what happens, if Roger loses tomorrow and Nole wins TMC, Roger will be at 5305 and Nole will be at 5295 (I think) and Brisbane offers something like 175 ranking points for the winner so yes he could potentially lose it.

#2 and #3 DOES make a difference, but indeed - not much.
#2 can only meet #1 in the final - with being #3 you may have to play both #1 and #2. Not that it will make much difference at the AO, as we know the current #1 isn't actually stellar on that surface, but still. Ah, the biggest problem Roger can face seems to be the current #4 - who won't stay #4 for long if he goes on like he's been doing the past couple of weeks.
Whether Roger will be able to reclaim the #1 position... hmmm. It will depend more on Rafa's form in early 2009 than on his I think.

No the main reason why I want him to stay #2 is because I don't want him to have major another dissappointment to deal with, which would surely be the case if he'd slide to #3 early next year...

Roger Federer

SHANGHAI, CHINA

R. FEDERER/R. Stepanek
7-6, 6-4

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Bit of an unusual situation today. Usually when your opponent pulls out last minute you have a walkover. How did that affect you? When did you find out?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, not too much. You're always sort of ready for news like this, you know, with the alternates flying around the locker rooms and everywhere.
But I heard after I warmed up. Wasn't a huge adjustment. You know, I mean, things are ready to, you know, be played for. I guess it was maybe a touch easier playing Andy obviously than playing Radek who is playing for the first time in a Masters Cup.

Q. Last year you lost your first match and then went undefeated through the rest of the championship. Are you tempted to look that far ahead and think perhaps you could do the same thing again in successive years?
ROGER FEDERER: I mean, sure. Why not? I've done it once. I've always had a lot of success, you know, in Masters Cup play. Like obviously the situation that is in my control.
If I win, I'm through. That's the similar situation that I was in last year, except last year I was through before my match in the end. So it was kind of a funny turn of events.
So we'll see. I mean, important to rest up and see what happens against Murray, because only a good performance will do the job.

Q. Andy Murray said he would like to beat you and knock you out of this competition. What is your comment on that?
ROGER FEDERER: Sure. I mean, he would be stupid saying something different.
Yeah, I'm looking forward to the match. Should be interesting. You know, he's a wonderful player. He's had a great end to the season. He's definitely, you know, the guy probably most in form, you know, with a couple of guys. It's an interesting matchup.

Q. You said you were feeling sick yesterday. Could you give us a little bit of an idea of what happened, and how did you feel out there when you were playing tonight?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, I got sick, or started to feel really bad after my match was over with Simon only later on when I got back to the hotel, and shortly before I was going to bed. Woke up in the morning and I was feeling terrible. Really upset stomach and couldn't even practice. Didn't go out of the room. Just sort of trying to get over things. It would have been impossible to play yesterday.
So I guess I got really lucky, you know, that match was scheduled late today. Then, I guess that Andy pulled out sort of got a little bit more lucky. And then Radek is not playing with his own racquets, so that made it a little bit more lucky again.
At the end of the day I still have a chance. I hope with a day of recovery, I'll make a miracle happen here and get through into the semis.

Q. You said earlier this year in Dubai that you were surprised that Andy Murray hadn't changed his game a lot; that he was still basically a fairly defensive player. Would you say with his progress this year, has he changed much as a player?
ROGER FEDERER: I guess he's gotten more confident, you know. That's obviously a huge difference in a player, especially young and up-and-coming who has big potential. That makes a big, big difference. I mean, know why I said it, I guess. Because Andy can play aggressive, but he doesn't choose to do it.
I mean, it's a good option to have, I guess. It was a compliment on the highest of levels. I knew Andy took it this way. But some journalists don't understand tennis enough that they took it in the wrong context.

Q. The situation on Friday is slightly unusual in that Andy has already qualified and you haven't. How might that change the match, do you think? You'll go in with a much stronger attitude than he might?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, it is a tough situation because usually, you know, there's all to play for in any match during the year. All of a sudden you come to the Masters Cup play and one's sometimes through and the other guy's not. Sometimes both are through or both are out. It does change your approach a little bit.
But over all the years I've taken part in Masters Cups, I've seen the best of efforts all the way through. I think that's what counts. I've seen a situation where back in 2002 I came here and Moya played Costa. If Moya loses, you know, who was already qualified against Costa, Hewitt would have been out.
Of course that doesn't happen. Hewitt goes through and wins the tournament, you know, and stays No. 1 in the world.
So it's good to see, you know. That's why I think we can expect a match that's going to be full-on. There's a lot to play for, you know, prestige. I don't think Andy wants to go into the semifinals with a loss, you know, and that's why it's going to be a good matchup for me.

Q. What do you think about the Davis Cup? Who will be the winner now?
ROGER FEDERER: I always thought it was a 50/50. Maybe a little bit an edge to Argentina while Rafa was still going to play. Now that he doesn't play, obviously see it more like 65/35, you know.
But, you know, tough. You never know. Still believe that Argentina's probably gonna win.

Q. Could you give us a sense of the speed of the court, how it's playing, and how difficult it might be even for an attacking player, how difficult it is to hit through this court.
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, I guess it depends a little bit who plays who. I mean, if you have two attacking players, this court could obviously play a little fast, you know, because the ball stays low on your slice. It can take the kick.
But, I mean, all in all, it's still a slow medium-paced court. It's something I don't like to see that often, you know, is that courts that slow now over all the years have, outdoor hard courts and indoors have become all so similar. It's not like the change like it used to be when Pete and these guys were around.
I mean, I like this court. You know, it's played in my favor over the years. But I would still like to see it play a little bit more fast. But, yeah, especially a guy like Andy or, you know, guys who defend so well, it's obviously hard to get the balls past them, so you have to out-maneuver them.

 - well I'm watching either a Spanish/Chinese/whatever livestream, or at the Dutch pay-TV, so not too much Muzza Fawning over there... at least not that I know of. But I don't know what's more irritating, Extensive Muzza Fawning, or that terrible idiot Theo Bakker on Dutch TV, who yesterday went on-and-on about how much Roger is done, finished and should retire...

while it's nice that djerk lost and roger's year end no.2 position is secure... but as far as i'm concerned... it's no.1 that matters... no.2 and no.3 doesn't make much difference... so am hoping that roger will win the remaining of his matches so that he can have a better chance at shot at retaking back no.1 position before wimbledon 2009...

regards,

It was on the Swiss teletext page, yes. I hope it's indeed true, but it can well be that the SWISS sports reporters want to report every little positive tidbit they can find. I'll await tomorrow and watch it with my own eyes before I'm willing to believe anything, to be honest... call me a cynic. ;)

good news Nole lost and #2 is secured, difference between 2 and 3 may not seem big but it prevents his chance of drawing Nadal in Semis at AO ... let him and Nole get drawn in the same half and one blows the other out.

wonder if Rog, Nadal, Nole and Murray will all make the Semis at Aussie next season.

I don't mind much about Roger's ranking outside of the #1. Nole failing to move up is enjoyable though.

At this point, I'd prefer that Fed draw Nadal or Nole in the semis. I think Murray may be his toughest matchup on hard if he keeps up his current form. I don't see Djokovic or Nadal currently being able to play like Murray did during the later half of the Madrid match.
