Ooo I went to the masters for qualifiers today and I got a few pics of Lleyton practicing with Pim pim :) I'll upload them in a bit if you guys want. To tell you the truth, I wasn't so impressed with Lleyton's game, pim pim was playing better. As well, I'm quite concerned about his serve. I mean for the love of god, GET IT IN!!!

For any of the older posters (I mean the date that you joined): Yes, Marco was playing today... and yes... he lost :( He swears quite a bit (in three different languages too!!!), so very very fiesty :o

Hewitt thanks Toronto fans
http://canada.masters-series.com
Sunday July 25, 2004

Australian Lleyton Hewitt, the former World No. 1 player, drew a large crowd to the Main Stage Sunday when he showed up to a question and answer session as part of the ATP STARS Program. Hewitt, may not have won a major title this year, but says he still has a bit of a streak going. “In the last three majors,” he said, “I have lost to the eventual winner. It’s tough out there.”

Like all the other players, Hewitt is mightily impressed with the new Rexall Centre at York University. “It’s an awesome stadium court, there’s lots of practice courts and it seems very fan friendly which is a really good thing.”
And Toronto’s fans have also impressed Hewitt. “I think I speak for all the players in saying thanks to the huge number of fans who have come out to watch even the qualifying rounds. I want you to know we are very grateful for it.”

There was only one question that stumped the adorable Aussie. When he was asked when he would marry his girlfriend and former World No. 1 Kim Cljisters he said: “Gee, I don’t know.”

Rough draw ... but at least he'll get some good practice ;)

Lleyton is not fat by any stretch of the imagination - and Australians don't even eat twinkies. So lay off Lleyton please :)

Not into Games

Lleyton Hewitt enjoys the week-to-week grind, not the Olympics

By MIKE KOREEN -- Toronto Sun

While the sporting world gathers in Athens for the Olympics next month, Lleyton Hewitt will be playing in a slightly overshadowed ATP Tour tennis tournament in Washington.

It's part of Hewitt's master plan. Grand Slams and Davis Cups, not the Olympics or the No. 1 ranking, represent ultimate success to the Australian.

The youngest player in history to reach the top spot in the ATP rankings (for 75 consecutive weeks) from 2001 to 2003, Hewitt, 23, feels just fine in his No. 9 spot heading into Tennis Masters Canada this week at the new Rexall Centre. The next few weeks are all about preparing for the U.S. Open.

"For me, the majors are more important (than the No. 1 ranking)," Hewitt, a two-time Grand Slam winner and two-time Davis Cup champion, said yesterday. "I've been No. 1 and I was lucky enough to be there for 75 weeks. That was a dream in itself. But I'm not going to go out there playing every tournament week in and week out just to get No. 1 back. If I win Wimbledon or the U.S. Open, that puts me in position to be No. 1 anyway."

As for the Olympics, Hewitt isn't a big fan.

"I don't believe tennis should probably be in it," said Hewitt, who won't play in Athens, though he did compete four years ago in Sydney when he lost in the first round. "We have big tournaments week in and week out. Other athletes work their whole life just for that one shot every four years and it can make or break your career."

Hewitt is using the time to train and play in Washington, not to get married to tennis-playing girlfriend Kim Clijsters, who also is skipping the Olympics, as has been rumoured.

In the previous tournament in Toronto in 2002, Hewitt came as No. 1 only to lose his first round match to Felix Mantilla. But that came at the old National Tennis Centre, meaning Hewitt gets a fresh start here tomorrow against Spanish youngster Rafael Nadal.

"A lot of things have changed," Hewitt said. "I like the stadium and it's nice coming back here. It feels like a bigger tournament with this stadium."

Hewitt believes his best is yet to come. He lost to eventual champion and world No. 1 Roger Federer at the Australian Open and Wimbledon and Hewitt certainly isn't the only person who has bowed out against the awesome Swiss player.

"There are areas of my game I can work on and I think I've been doing that the last few years," Hewitt said. "It's paying off."

:bigclap: Hewitt. I feel exactly the same way as this.

Maybe this year the USO will have invested in some more modern technology than "kids with towels". The rain delays last year were actually shorter than the mopping up half the time ;)

In any event, good luck Lleyton!

Good luck in the second round too ... though on the bright side I am fairly sure Lleyton has now defended not only his points from this tournament last year, but all his points until the USO ... hoping for a 5-8 ranking before then :)

Hewitt, Reid, second round
Date: 29/07/04

Rising Spaniard Rafael Nadal made Lleyton Hewitt feel a little old while compatriot Todd Reid couldn't have felt much better in a good day for the Australians at the Toronto Masters.

Launching his hardcourt season build up to the US Open, ninth seed Hewitt was blown off the court in the first set before going on to beat the 18-year-old prodigy 1-6 6-4 6-2.

Reid downed French Open champion Gaston Gaudio in three tight sets.

Hewitt, who will play veteran Jiri Novak in the second round, said he was surprised at how just how much vigour Nadal had shown.

"I'm not that old but he's a lot younger. He's bouncing around...and shows you that energy out there," Hewitt said.

"His game was very explosive right from the start and I just tried to hang in there and hold my serve in the second set more than anything."

Nadal has been touted as a player who could usurp Hewitt as the youngest to become world No.1, something the Australian did two months before his 21st birthday.

"There's going to be guys coming up when they are 20, 21 and he is obviously a well developed kid for 18," Hewitt said of Nadal who climbed from No.818 in the world at the end of 2001 to No.34 in March this year.

"He moves extremely well, he's hungry and he wants to win. He wants to beat the best players in the world. I know he's already beaten (Carlos) Moya and (Albert) Costa and those guys on clay and he can play on hard court as well. He's not one dimensional."

Earlier Reid battled all the way with 11th seed Gaudio, beating him 7-6 5-7 6-3.

He meets qualifier Jan Hernych next.

In other matches Andy Roddick easily advanced to the second round of the $US2.5 million ($A3.58 million) event with opponent Julien Benneteau suffering a mid-match injury.

Roddick, the Toronto defending champ and winner of a second straight title at the weekend in Indianapolis, advanced 6-4 6-2 against the hampered Frenchman.

Benneteau, ranked 76th, gave Roddick a battle in the opening set, but strained his neck as he stretched for a return in the fourth game of the second.

World No.1 Roger Federer completed a match he had begun 18 hours before on the previous evening, ousting Moroccan Hicham Arazi 6-3 7-5.

I think Lleyton's second match might end up moving to Centre Court..cause his Court 1 match is scheduled at 7:30pm..at the same time the 7:30pm match scheduled on Centre Court is Gonzalez/Melzer (they were obviously expecting Agassi, not Melzer)

So it's either..

Gonzalez/Melzer
Kuerten/Hernych
Hewitt(9)/Santoro

Which match would you put on Center court? :p

Angele
07-29-2004, 08:21 PM
Do you think they'd change up the schedule like that? I, personally, am praying that they do!

Chesty Larue
07-29-2004, 08:57 PM
Yeah they switch stuff like that around.

Last year for example..they had a bit too much time left between the last scheduled day match on Centre court and the evening session so they put Nav's doubles match from the Centre court instead of the court they were suppose to be on.
