I’ve felt the pain for two days, I took a painkiller today but it didn’t help,” he said. “I was thinking about retiring more than 10 times I guess. … I also have a cold. I’m not in my best condition.”

His knee is being taped. I'm a lil' bit worried. :(

a sore knee is not that serious-i dont want him to miss this opportunity-this is rather weak draw and if he pulls out then his critics would be bad.I feel he has a great chance of going some distance in this event.Fat Nal can easily be undone by him.A sore knee and a little cold should not hold him back!! GANBARE KEI!!

Kei is not featured in the day's order of play.this means he gets 2 days break-i hope he rests that knee with an ice pack or something. But can anyone tell me how come he is not supposed to play today?is it because of a crammed schedule? but it seems to be stroke of good luck:)

Important thing is Kei will be healthy. He is very young and he has ample time to reach the rankings. Important thing he should be injury free for next season. Worst thing to happen is for him to play and the injuries become worse. Look at the career of some players who were so full of promise at the same age as Kei, and now what injuries have done to them. I as a fan don't want to see the same happen to Kei.

Best of Luck!

Hope the two days' rest has worked to his benefit!
I also think keeping fit and healthy should be his top priority, but at the same time he (and all the up and comers on the main tour) needs to learn how tough it is to play week in, week out on the ATP tour. I don't want him to push himself too hard and get seriously injured, but if he can manage small niggles here and there that's good for him as well, because that's what all the pros are doing.
Remember, Del Potro used to retire a lot until his breakthrough this summer. Young players are also prone to cramping than experienced players. I think Kei is now learning how to negotiate his fitness in the busy tour schedule, and I hope he's always in good hands when he has a physical problem!

Good luck against Hrbaty today! The Slovak plays his best indoors, and he seems to be playing well, but if Kei has got over the knee problem and cold, then there's no reason why Kei should lose to the guy. Go Kei!! :rocker2:
(I may not be able to follow the livescore today but I wish him the very best! :yeah:)

seeing my favorite players like ferrero and paradorn get injured i know how it feels to have a fav. player injured and then not doing well.part of the reason for the"big three" to be so highly ranked is because they hardly ever had any injury-especially R-Fed.

Ferrero was an awesome talent whose potential was never fully realised. So too was Paradorn.Just imagine Ball had started rallying in 06 much like gonzo-but gonzo reached the final down under in 07.Maybe it could have been Paradorn that year,Who Knows? because he had a long injury which he kept secret.

we must support Kei truly-I am Asian too,I am from bangladesh and well wisher of all asian players even if they be from japan.I want to see Kei do well.Yes i admit he is only 18! and forgive me for my over-enthusiam!:p

Nishikori fairytale continues in Sweden

STOCKHOLM (AFP) — Japanese teenager Kei Nishikori opened another chapter in his fairytale 2008 when he reached the Stockholm Open quarter-finals on Thursday by downing Slovakian veteran Dominik Hrbaty 6-1, 1-6, 7-5.

The 18-year-old, who will tackle Croatian second seed Mario Ancic for a place in the last four, is fast becoming a sporting hero back home which is desperate for a tennis revival a decade and a half after Shuzo Matsuoka reached the Top 50.

Nishikori, ranked 77 in the world, will face Ancic for the first time with the Croatian having beaten the only two Japanese players he has faced on the ATP - Go Soeda last year at the Australian Open and Tasuku Iwamiin Tokyo five years ago.

Nishikori has made a leap up the rankings of 212 places since his surprise title in February when he defeated number 12 James Blake at Delray Beach in Florida.

He is the first Japanese to win an ATP crown since Matsuoka won the 1992 South Korea crown.

In his last two tournaments, Nishikori reached the US Open fourth round and went down in the third round at home last week in Tokyo.

"This is the first time I'm winning so constantly and it surprises me. Of course I haven't faced anyone from the top 10, but it gives me confidence. Now I want to advance to the semis," said Nishikori who was proud of his determined performance on Thursday.

"I just concentrated on holding my serve in the third set," he said.

"I'm glad I did not go down after failing to break his serve in the ninth game."

Wild-card Nishikori and Ancic advance to quarter-finals in Stockholm

STOCKHOLM, Sweden — Wild-card Kei Nishikori advanced to the quarter-finals of the Stockholm Open on Thursday, beating Dominik Hrbaty 6-1, 1-6, 7-5.

Nishikori will face No. 2 Mario Ancic, a 7-6 (4), 6-4 winner over Steve Darcis. Top-seeded David Nalbandian, No. 3 Jarkko Nieminen and No. 4 Robin Soderling also reached the last eight.

[...]

Nishikori, who has jumped 212 spots to 77th in the rankings since the beginning of the year, was bothered by a sore knee in his opening match against eighth-seeded Marcel Granollers on Monday.

"It was better than the first match, he said. "I feel it is 80 per cent healed. I didn't feel much pain during the match."

The 18-year-old Nishikori had three break points to 5-4 in the third set when Hrbaty fell behind 0-40, but the Slovakian saved them all.

In the next game, Hrbaty was only two points from the match at 30 all, but the Japanese teenager eventually held his serve.

"I just concentrated on keeping my serve," he said. "I'm glad that I did not go down after failing to break his serve from 0-40. The next game was difficult."

Nishikori broke to 6-5 with a forehand winner and then held to love to wrap up the match.

"This is the first time I'm winning so constantly and it surprises me," Nishikori said. "Of course I haven't faced anyone from top 10, but it gives me confidence. Now I wish to advance to the semi."

I think it is possible-if his knee were healthy maybe he could be in top 50,who knows??
But i need some replies on whether you all agree with me or not.If not, what rank should Kei get at the end of the year??

Hi Reaz :wavey: Congrats to Kei!!!
He won against top 10 players, like Ferrer or Blake. If he displays his ability to the full, he will move into top 10 sooner or later.:D
But I think he is no need to rush. He is only 18 and began his career as a professional player just one year ago! All I want now is to see his best tennis as much as possible.:yeah:

It's good that he is now at no. 66 that's +11 spots higher than his previous ranking, the project 45 will soon be destroyed :D. But of course we all know what his future goal is, which is to be a top 10 player or even the world number one. I really believed its possible, i just hope the injury subsides and will not be to serious, and hey his only 18. Knee injury is very serious, just look what happened to Tiger Woods. Well again lets hope that his injury was only a sore knee. Anyone has any news on how is Kei's knee problem?

I was hoping that he'll play qualifying at the Madrid Masters or even get a Wildcard, but i guess he needs a good rests for the upcoming tournaments (Guess he'll only have possible 1 tournament to join excluding the BNP Paribas Masters). Regarding the Wildcard at Madrid Masters, i think he should have been given one, :) that's my bias opinion. LOL.

I am also hoping that he can play at the coming BNP Paribas Masters. Anyone knew the draw size? This week's madrid master's draw was 48. If the BNP Masters draw size will be 64, im sure Kei will have automatic entry, not all Top 64 players will play at that event for sure. Or again if that is not possible let's hope he'll be given a wildcard, or he just needs to do the hardway which is to go to qualifying.

Am i thinking ahead of time? :D Sorry i'm just excited for Nishikori! :wavey:

Can't wait for next year!

You can't expect a sensible decision from that tournament that gives no WC to a home player who is also a former champion whose ranking dropped due to an injury layoff. :ras:
Sorry, a personal rant. It's nothing againt you! I am very cross at Madrid Masters organisers' (or more precisely, Ion Tiriac's) stupid WC decisions.

Entry deadline for Paris Masters was Sept. 15, when Kei was ranked #77. He is currently No. 5 on the alternate list for the qualies, meaning there needs to be at least five withdrawals either from the main draw or the qulifying draw for Kei to play the qualifying rounds. And usually WCs go to French players...
So at the moment it looks like Basel will be his last tournament of the season, but you never know what will happen! :yeah:

Hello Bunny!

Oh i see, don't know those technical sides on qualifying. I really appreciate you for at lease giving us those information. Lets just hope Kei does well in Basel and then perhaps be given a WC entry at Paribas Masters.

Bad news.
Kei is not playing Basel. His name is out from the alternate list for the Paris qualifying, too.
According to Japanese news sources, he still has pain in his knee although MRI scan found that the injury itself is not serious .
http://www.47news.jp/CN/200810/CN2008101801000125.html

So it could be the end of this season for him, but his health is the most important thing and I wish him speedy recovery...

Rafkei
10-18-2008, 05:53 AM
sad sad sad

But let's just look on the bright side. Come next year and if the injury is really not serious as said in the papers, he'll be fully recovered.

As Bunny have said Health is more important, because no matter how good you are as a player, if you have injury it is practically useless.

Wishing Kei goodluck and faster recovery.

Anyway Bunny, is there a way that we can read the news in English, because its written in Japanese. But still we appreciate you're update.

Yeah i was thinking of that as well. Is Japan qualified?

If he partners with Ai Sugiyama they'll be a strong team.

But i doubt if Kei will play, i guess he needs his rest.

Re: Hopman Cup.
Seven of the eight countries competing Hopman Cup have been confirmed. US, Australia, Germany, Slovakia, Russia, France and Italy.
The eighth berth will be given to the winners of Asian Hopman Cup in Tashkent.
I don't know whether Kei will play Asian Hopman Cup yet, it will probably depend on how his training goes from late November. But I hope he will make it and win! :)

Edit: For get the above.
Japan is not playing Asian Hopman Cup because the country's national championship is taking place in the same week. Tosser! :(
Countries invited are Kazakhstan, China, Chinese Taipei, India, Thanland and Korea or Philippines.
http://www.kortennis.co.kr/down/2008/atf_asian_hopman/atf_asian_hopman_factsheet.pdf

It's a pity it's in mid-November so Kei won't be able to play.
O well, he can play Doha or Chennai or Brisbane in the week of Hopman Cup in January and win more points!

Nice update. Yeah it'll probably be much better if he plays on an official atp tournamwent so he can gain more ranking points. Chennai is a good tournament as well as in Brisbane. I am so excited for the next season, especially the Australian Open.

Re: Hopman Cup, i hope China wins, however they only have solid female players, their male players still not right up there. India might have a chance if Sania plays. Thailand probably is the strongest team if Tamarine and Danai teamed up.

Maybe Kei must thank Monfils for not entering Brisbane. Gael's pictures are on the Brisbane Web site, so he obviously planned to play there earlier, but he's not on the entry list published this week. Maybe he changed his mind and decided not to play or he simply forgot to enter by the deadline.
Sure even if Gael was on the list and Kei the first alternate, there will always be a few withdrawals so he would have made MD nearer the time. But it's always nice to be in MD from the beginning! :)
Btw, cutoff for Doha is #120 and Chennai is #84.

Regarding the thread title, is it OK because we threw all the Kei-Ai related news on the news thread? I think we can start a girlfriend thread once both of them confirmed they are dating. :)
And maybe we can start a new tournament thread in 2009 when the Brisbane draw comes out.
What do you think?

I don't want to cause someone's upset just because i had created many threads in the earlier stage.
