Oh boy this really sucks. No doubt this will be played on an ice rink. And I can't see Stan taking out Blake or Roddick. I have to believe Roger will play as there's no way Switzerland will take out the USA without him. And probably not much of a chance with him.

Quite amazing though that Switzerland draws USA and Serbia draws Spain.

It will probably be up to the doubles... Hopefully the Swiss can pull out a Beijing again and beat the Bryans :o

Hopefully the Swiss can pull out a Beijing again and beat the Bryans :oI'm not so confident of Roger taking out Roddick on a very fast surface where he can throw down bombs left and right. And that's assuming he beats Blake. Assuming the Roger of 2008 no longer exists in 2009 he should beat Blake, but you never know when playing on an ice rink.

Hopefully 2008's crappy form will be long gone and Roger will be back to his old self... And if that's the case, then neither Andy nor Blake could really threat him, even on an ice rink

There's nothing like an Ice rink. The fastest hardcourts in US are in Cincinnati....and roger didn't have any trouble with andy there...and the other important thing to remember is that these are going to be best of 5.......so roger will have a really good shot at winning bothi his matches....no matter where they are played.....and i believe it will come down to stan and especially doubles......

An intriguing tie, indeed.
I hope all the top players get to participate.
As things stand right now, I would say it's going to be the doubles that decide the tie.
Hopefully Wawa does well in singles.

Yeah well I think the surface the USA used against Spain in 2007 and France in 2008 was about as fast as you can get. I'm guessing it was faster than Cincy and the USO. Plus it was indoors.

am actually very excited for this tie :D!

I'm still confident that Roger will be able to beat Andy, regardless of the surface, and I think Stan can only improve from his form in 2008. I don't mean it'll be an easy one, but, providing roger plays, I think the swiss have a pretty good chance against the US. federinka against the bryans would be another treat :).

why can't they just play this, like, tomorrow already X3?? (ok, ok, I get too excited, I guess...)

DAVIS CUP - SWITZERLAND MEETS THE US

The Swiss Davis Cup team will play the United States in the first round of the 2009 Davis Cup competition (March 6-8, 2009).

The Swiss team gained promotion to the elite World Group last weekend after a one-year absence. The match in the US could feature the world's number one ranked doubles pair, the Bryan twins, against Roger Federer/Stanislas Wawrinka, who won gold in the doubles event at the Beijing Olympics.

The Swiss played three of the last ten encounters abroad, one of which - 2007 against the Czech Republic - they lost. The US team around Patrick McEnroe last won the Cup in 2007 and lost in this year's semi-final against Spain last weekend.

Severin Lüthi, the captain of the Swiss team, said it will be a difficult task against the USA, the 32-times-champion. "The Americans have a lot of strong singles players as well as the Bryan brothers, the leading doubles team in the world. But our team has chances against any other nation." Switzerland is the only team in the World Group next to the USA and Spain with two top-ten players.

The location of play is still open, but must be decided upon by December 16, 2008, according to the regulations of the International Tennis Federation.

The first round:

Argentina - Netherlands
Czech Republic - France
USA - Switzerland
Cratia - Chile
Sweden - Israel
Russia - Rumania
Germany - Austria
Spain - Serbia

Interesting match-ups! For the first time ever I might even get interested in the DC... both Switzerland - USA and Spain - Serbia will be nerve crackers I expect.

And oh, oh, poor Dutchies... :haha:
(well, even if they happened to win their tie against South-Korea, I don't think they belong in the World Group at all, so no harm done there... can't wait to go all-in at the vBet on that tie,)

So Roger has decided to play DC R1 next year. I had a feeling he would because #1 he's running out of time to win DC and #2 no way will SUI win against the USA on a super fast surface without him.

Dear Fans,

After making it back to the world group for 2009, I have decided to play the first round tie of Davis Cup in the USA in February. I am excited to once again join my fellow Swiss teammates, who I have a great friendship with, and I look forward to what I am sure will be a tough weekend.

All the best,

Roger

Nyahaha, the USTA would probably want an ice rink for this -- they probably figure that'll take care of Wawrinka and it'll just go down-to-the-wire in the doubles.

On Tennis: Federer to play in Davis Cup opening round against U.S.
By RAVI UBHA, seattlepi.com

...snip

U.S. captain Patrick McEnroe hopes Federer won't do what he did when the nations last met in 2001. Cheered in his hometown of Basel, Federer, who hadn't collected any of his 13 Grand Slam titles back then, won all three of his matches to lead Switzerland to a 3-2 victory.

McEnroe wants the fastest surface possible to nullify the threat of Wawrinka, no slouch himself with a ranking of 12th last week.

"As we know, it's pretty difficult to make Roger uncomfortable, so we're going to do everything we can to make Wawrinka uncomfortable," McEnroe told The New York Times.

Apparently San Antonio is the favorite to host the DC tie as it would be played at the Alamo Dome which can hold up to 30,000 spectators. USTA claims they will need that to take out SUI. I think the record is 27,500 set by Spain back in 2004.
