Crap, most probably the doubles team will be Fed/Allegro and not Fed/Wawa :(

I think it was a tough decision for Lüthi which players to choose for the doubles. It would surely have been nice for Yves to get the chance to play once more with Roger, but on the other hand the crowd surely wants to see the Olympic Champions on the court.

Have a great time at the event, JM :) Please say hi to Eva :)

I think that Roger will mark all victories in this three days of Davis Cup! :)

I don't think he will play on Sunday if Switzerland has won the encounter already after the doubles ;)

yeah... I'm watching on a very bad livestream, so I can't tell whether the balls were indeed out or in, but the fact that both teams are complaining as much as they do really says it all.

What's the score btw? (can't even see THAT on my livestream :help:)

The problem is that the match refs are not even comfortable anymore to these situations... far more easy to say "it looked close, you can challenge it"...

Sorry for the late reply, Roger just broke again in the second and leads 5*-4

Thanks!

I just heard Belgium got a point penalty for racket abuse...

I fully agree with you on your point regarding the umpires. Even more, why the heck such sloppy linesmen? I guess they, too, have become too much used to the hawkeye system... why bother making accurate and timely calls when there's the hawkeye? I guess they forgot the system isn't available at DC ties.

dj_mercury

Roger won the second 6-4. Have the audio turned off so I missed the point penalty, but definetely possible, since Vliegen was leading 3-0 and not playing bad at all, so surely frustrating for him.

As for the linesmen I think the main problem is that for a DC tie I doubt that there is that much selection to pick them instead of others that have applied for it, so I guess the probability to have really lousy ones is much higher than obviously in a Gran Slam.

Really spectacular point to start the set, pity that it ended with an UE.

He first got a code violation for complaining, and a second code violation for racket throwing - and in contrary to most, this referee took the adequate (as it was the second code violation) decision to give him a point penalty as well.
[EDIT]: Vliegen got his first cv for eye-contact with the coach.
But I do understand his frustration... btw was Vliegen playing THAT well, or was Roger being his usual 2008-self again? ;)

I don't really get this... - why should the number of linesmen to select from be different?

dj_mercury
09-19-2008, 05:44 PM
Well if you check the stats especially in the first set, Vliegen was doing really few errors and hitting many winners. Roger was probably not playing 100%, but still I think Vliegen aggressive play was really effective as long as the balls were in the court, that obviously changed in the middle of the second break and now Roger closed the pendency with a clear 6-2.

The number of people to select may be the same, but my guess is that the people that announce themselves for taking this role is much lower, but I could be totally wrong, no expert of such organizational issues.

Yeah, from what I could see due to a horrible livestream and Belgian TV showing Tetris in stead of tennis, I got the impression that Vliegen was in fact playing well and well managed to give Roger a bit of trouble during the first 1 1/2 sets with his aggressive play. Problem (or rather: not ) was he apparently couldn't keep it up, even more when he lost his cool.

The number of people to select may be the same, but my guess is that the people that announce themselves for taking this role is much lower, but I could be totally wrong, no expert of such organizational issues.

Well I have no idea of this either, but I think that even in that crowd there'd be quite a few people capable of doing a better job than the :retard:s over there on court!

Swiss duo is struggling a lot with the weird but effective double play from the Belgium team. They remain at the baseline a lot of the times, even on their serve.

Malisse/Rochus are a pretty good doubles team, they've won RG together if I'm not mistaken and they've played quite a bit of doubles together, although it's been a while since they've last played. Fedrinka aren't playing that well yet, and the Belgians started out well.

Wawrinka is playing really good now, he is taking risks to break the defensive setup of the Belgian and he is rewarded with a break.

S: Hello, as you can imagine, there was a lot of emotion, we spent 2 awesome weeks in Beijing, for me it was the best moments of my career, I'd like to thank Roger because it's of course also because of him, I'm proud of what we've done, thanks Roger! Today the emotion is much bigger because I play in Lausanne, the town I was born and I live in, in front of a crowd I really like, it's special to celebrate in front of you all, through all the years, be here today is quite something special. Thank you again, you're awesome.

R: Well, there's not much else to say... As Stan said, it was a real special moment, not only for us players but for whole Switzerland. I knew I had a "medal in me", but to share it with Stan is awesome. It's also the moment for me to thank Stan for playing with me, and it's also time to be thankful to all of you, thank you so much, and I'm looking forward to today's match and the next to come.

Well, since the tie is over I guess #3 and #4 will play the last ones...

At first I thought that Roger would play tomorrow to give something back to the crowd, but I have just read that Lüthi has said that the chances that Roger and Stan would play are less than 50 %:

Olympic champions secure Switzerland a place in the 2009 World Group

Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka gave Switzerland an unassailable 3-0 lead in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Play-off tie against Belgium. The Olympic champions won the doubles in Lausanne against Xavier Malisse and Olivier Rochus 46 76(6) 63 63.

The magical ride with the two heroes of Beijing had begun thirty minutes prior to the start of the match: The Swiss received a special celebration for their Olympic effort in a place that was already filled to capacity. Accompanied by sports minister Mr Samuel Schmid, and Jörg Schild, the director of Swiss Olympic, Mr René Stammbach, the president of Swiss Tennis, had a speech for the champions who had entered the court with their gold medal. "The Olympic success is also encouraging for the Davis Cup. After winning the gold, why shouldn't we dream o0f winning the Davis Cup now?"

The 6000 fans were certainly not ones to say no to this proposal. Federer and Wawrinka got long standing ovations and each a collage with memories from Beijing. After one more celebration round, the Swiss had to prepare for the doubles. "The emotions were strong. I had tears in my eyes and couldn't find the proper words", Federer said.

No gifts on the court

And there were no more gifts. In fact, in the beginning it was quite a bumpy ride with the Belgians, 2004 winners of the French Open, taking the early break to lead 2-1. The Swiss equalized to 4-4 when Olivier Rochus was unable to win a point but then the next pieces of magic came from him. The small player with huge heart and great hands sealed the break against Federer in the next game by scoring an unbelievable point with a forehand passing shot. He then converted the third set point with a perfect drop volley.

And the bumpy ride continued in the second set, when the Swiss were taken to a tiebreak. "Fedrinka", as they are called by some people now, took a 5-2 lead but Wawrinka then couldn't serve it out. As a result the Swiss got in trouble and faced set point at 5-6. A forehand-top-spin-volley by Federer led to 6-6 and then Malisse missed a "penalty shot" at 6-7 by hitting an easy backhand volley long. "Of course, it would have been a big difference if we could have gone two sets up", Rochus said.

From that moment, the Swiss took charge and cruised. They broke Malisse three consecutive times and finished the match after almost three hours. Then, the memories of Beijing came up one more time, when they repeated their Olympic celebration, with Wawrinka on the floor and Federer trying to get some of the heat out of his young partner. "The whole day was unbelievable with all these emotions", Wawrinka said.

On Sunday, the last two singles are now of lesser importance. The Swiss team hasn't taken the decision yet who will play, but captain Severin Lüthi might rest his stars: "We have to make up our minds but I would say the chance that Roger and Stan will play is less than 50 percent."

Gracious in defeat

The Belgians were graceful in defeat although they had plenty of reason to be unhappy. They had been seeded and had a tough draw to play the Czech Republic away in the first round and then they were seeded again and had to play Switzerland abroad. Against two top ten players, they failed to win a match but had their chances in two matches.

Captain Julien Hoferlin didn't have reproaches to make to his players: "Of course, I wish they had won but they gave everything they had and that was all I could ask for. I am proud of them." For the captain, an era ends as he will start a new job at the LTA and will not be leading the team again. "I look forward to the new job but I am very sad now."

JM, sorry i missed you and your wife but i sat with the other fans4Roger on tribune G above the entrance, from your vid i think you were close to the Belgian fans.

what a great atmosphere, wasn't it? i esp love the 'Olympic' ceremony with all the lights out and the little neon things glowing in the dark. WOW! Just glad Herr Schmidt didn't say anything. The doubles was great although i must say Malisse/Rochus played really well. Glad Fedrinka could close that out in 4. The first rubber on Friday made me a bit nervous cause Darcis is a good player and just glad Stan could win it in 5.
Lol, i actually left on the 2nd set of Roger's match on Friday to walk back to my car then drove to Morges thru the Autobahn to pick up my sister-in-law near the train station and then we drove to St-Prex then i could watch the 3rd set on her tv. I didn't want to be caught on traffic leaving Prilly if i waited till the match was finished, and everybody leaving Malley, so i dared walk out of Roger's match! I was also very tired that after dinner we watched a film, didn't finish it and then went to bed.
Then I drove back to Prilly yesterday because i knew that if Roger and Stan won their doubs i would drive back to Bern and skip today's matches. Sorry i had no time to call you , i met another fan that i know and we had coffee at that Migros center and met other RF fans (they were British) and we started to chat, then walked together to the Pattinoire and met up with the rest. After the game we were at the champagne bar near the media center (we saw Roger there and he waved at us before he entered) and Arturo (the f4R presi) bought 2 bottles of champagne. Did you see Mirka? She walked in at the entrance below us but she sat close to the Belgian fans with her friends but after 2 games she went out again. I was surprised she didn't sit there with Roger and Stans' parents cuz Roger's sister was also there. She wore some glittery Nike sneakers with Roger's name written on the back. The usher there didn't want to open the door for her cuz the match was still going on but she showed her badge and then she could go out.

Doris, Claudia relayed your greetings to everyone! wished you were there, i'm sure you would have enjoyed it too!
I also gave my ticket for today to a young Swiss girl from Lausanne and told her to sell it at Chf 20 if she can, and i gave my apero paper to those Brits who had another friend who flew all the way from the States, i hope Roger will be there today so she can hopefully see him up close and have her own Federer moment. :)

Apperantly Rafa is running on fumes, should still have it in him to beat Roddick, but he's far from 100%. There's still A LOT to play for this year, fresh Roger and tired Rafa would help.

Eva   glad to read you spent a nice time :)

I was indeed sitting not far from the Belgian supporters... I saw some people with the fans4roger caps maybe you were one of them  :D

I took the train yesterday to attend the doubles, St-Prex-Renens by train, and then 5 mintues of bus to the ice stadium...

I won't go today either, I guess the venue will be half empty :o :D

Cheers

JM, i was actually sitting with my sister-in-law at the resto next to the train station in St. Prex and had breakfast there! Then she walked back to their flat in Chemin du Cherrat (don't tell me you live there too) and i drove thru that beautiful coastline road then the highway towards Lausanne/ Malley.

No, i was not wearing a cap. But i bought the same shirt Roger wore from the Athleticum shop. :p

I'll try to watch the matches on tv today but i'm going out to play tennis later.

P.Antonius for the translation of the video that Eden posted.
The celebration was so nice....Team Fedrinka ROCKS!!
But I could listen to Roger speak french all day....:inlove: doesn't really matter what he says ;)

Mrs.B...thanks for your report. Glad you had Fed-Fab time. Maybe next year I can make the trip to Switzerland. Would love to be surronded by all that Swissness.

So happy they are back in the world group.

 when did you have your breakfast there, yesterday? We catched the 12:13 train to Renens, if you saw some guy with a Fed red shirt that was me :o I actually live (for one more week only though) 100 meters from the train station of St. Prex. ch. du Cherrat is just next to my street (Penguey) ;)

Doris, Claudia relayed your greetings to everyone! wished you were there, i'm sure you would have enjoyed it too!

Thanks for letting me know :)

I really wish I would have been there :awww:

I also gave my ticket for today to a young Swiss girl from Lausanne and told her to sell it at Chf 20 if she can, and i gave my apero paper to those Brits who had another friend who flew all the way from the States, i hope Roger will be there today so she can hopefully see him up close and have her own Federer moment. :)

That's really nice of you :)
