Time to start this new thread! Any articles, comments, match commentaries, photos and other fun stuff can go here starting now!

I have a question: will Rogi and Yves play doubles in TO?

I hope so! Rogi's a joy to watch in doubles -- he's amazingly quick and efficient -- but don't blink, cos the match will be over before you can say "Emmentaler"! ;)

Hi, Rogifan, will you be there in Toronto? If you will be, pls cheer him loud for us :D

Roger, get the momentum on to get the 4th consecutive title. That'll be awesome...;)

Dirk

Yes Go Ninja, win Canada. I do hope he pulls out of Cincy especially if he goes far here.

Fedex

If he wins here, pull out of Cincinatti for extra rest and preperation for Olympics. Otherwise play both TMS. I hope Rogi and Max play doubles sometime soon. They always do well, and well he should play a little more doubles anyway. He's only played 8 doubles matches this year, and lost 5 of them.

ytben
07-20-2004, 05:22 PM
Yeah if he goes far in Toronto I also thought he should pull out of Cincy. Two TMSs back2back, Olympics, and the USO  that's just too much.

The draw is out btw : http://canada.masters-series.com/1007/common/download_redirector.asp?file=http://www.masters-series.com/posting/2004/421/MDS.pdf

Very tough draw for Rogi, but not the worst I guess. Again Hewitt is in his quarter . And he can meet Pavel again on third btw, lol.

Dirk
07-24-2004, 09:09 PM
Rogi will be able to handle it. I hope he wins a lot so he can defend his points. If he gets to the final he will be very match tough for whom ever he shall face.

Good Luck Roger! :bounce:

Roger vs. Arazi would be a nice match to watch, lots of nice backhands

RogiFan, if you're going to the tournament, have a great time! :wavey: I hope you see Roger :yeah: I didn't get to see him at Wimbledon this year  but seeing him win the final at home was more than good enough :)

Fedex
07-24-2004, 10:23 PM
Personally, i am not worried about Hewitt. Roger can handle him. And needless to say, Hewitt has alot of dangerous floaters in his draw, that can take him out, so. This draw is a packed one thats or sure. So many dangerous players.

Shy
07-25-2004, 02:57 PM
Well, the last three times that he met Hewitt, he ends up winning the tournament.Maybe it will continue that way.

lsy
07-25-2004, 03:07 PM
Tough draw?...but then no draw is easy in TMS I guess.

My wish for Rogi coming few months is to do "steadily well" to end as the y/e no.1 but really really hoping he will win the Gold medal in Olympic games coz then he will have achieved all his main goals this year!!!

WyveN
07-25-2004, 11:47 PM
Rogers got a pretty tough draw, particularly the first few rounds. Arazi could be a tough match if he is fit/playing well.

lsy
07-26-2004, 09:43 AM
Interesting match for sure. Arazi is so good at making crazy shots, love watching him too. So I see Hewitt, Pavel in his draw again...or who knows maybe Rogi will get a chance to redeem his loss against Nadal here? ;)

So many good matches unfortunately the timing is just ridiculous and impossible for me to watch many matches live

For those of you who'll be attending the tournament, have fun, cheer loud for Rogi and keep us updated! :)

I second that :D

Can't wait! Finally will be able to see some tennis again. I am hoping I will be able to see Rogi's first round, but so many good first round matchups so won't hold my breath over it.

Good luck Rogi! :bounce:

Thanks for the compliment lsy  :D

Yeah the timing is really bad for us in Asia. And it will be like this all the way until USO too :(, well maybe not Olympics. Looks like I will follow the new raccoon eyes trend for couple months ;).
Today I won't stay for the whole coverage, probably only for couple hours.

Couple of hours.... but ya at least you're one hour behind my time...

I probably can only last for just one match :o

ytben
07-26-2004, 10:38 AM
Yah I'm one hour behind from you so the schedule is a tad(just a tad mind you) better. One match can last longer than couple hours though :p

I don't think I will last long either, but will have to push myself to watch especially Rogi's matches, StarSports won't have their usual day rerun.

Is it a full match rerun or just a recap of the previous day, do you know?

 great minds think alike! I also thought about it, don't think I will last for two months with two hours sleep :o

eerrr....no...I don't know but from the "past trends" I think it's likely to be full match rerun, except we never know what match will be on the rerun.

GO, ROGI!!!! We love you in Canada! ;)

LCeh
07-27-2004, 01:29 AM
Nope. I just bought a new ticket... :(

BTW, weather looks real bad for tomorrow. Not sure how the schedule is gonna work. :(

Liver
07-27-2004, 03:42 AM
I was also thinking of going to see the tournament on Wednesday. I can't decide if I want to go in the day or the night....Roger plays Tuesday night, so he'll probably play on Wednesday night. I want to see him live, but on tv is good tooo...more closeups!!

Did people see the opening of the tournament when all the players had to wear Toronto Maple Leaf Jerseys? Roger looked fine in his jersey, although most looked uncomfortable to be wearing hockey uniforms!! I doubt many of them have even put on skates!! Then later on they showed some fo the actual members of the team watching Andre and Tommy.

ytben
07-27-2004, 04:11 AM
Liver, why don't you go and then ask somebody to tape it for you. So you can have the best of both worlds :D

Yeah, I just took a look at the pic LCeh posted. Rogi looks great in his hockey uniform :D

Hopes it won't mess the schedule much and you still get to see Rogi LCeh.

LCeh
07-27-2004, 04:55 AM
Thanks ytben.

From what I know, there will be the most rain in the morning, then it gets better in the afternoon, and even less in the evening. So hopefully it won't affect Rogi much. :tape:

Shy

Roger is rusty.Considering that he had not play for two weeks ,and this is his first hardcourt match since a while, and not having hit much all day, he is doing ok. Like my commentator said; he is trying to find his rhythm.

LCeh
07-28-2004, 02:47 AM
The atmosphere was great! Lots of people were cheering for Rogi, and Rogi didn't disappoint us, took the first set with relative ease. I will be there as well tomorrow, and this time I am gonna bring the camera too, so hopefully I will get back some photos for you guys! :) :bounce:

ytben
07-28-2004, 02:49 AM
Yeah I heard he has 19 UEs already and 5 DFs in the first set only?If that's true, he is rusty alright. That kind of total is usually for the whole match for him not a single set

LCeh
07-28-2004, 02:52 AM
He is a bit rusty. Starts off the first game with 2 DFs, but I don't know his numbers since they didn't have it there. But there were some pretty good points. Overall, the tennis was okay, but the atmosphere was really good.

ytben
07-28-2004, 02:55 AM
Hey LCeh, back already? How was the match live, does it feel really different to watch Rogi live than on TV? Sorry about the rain, my anti rain dance doesn't work it seems.

LCeh
07-28-2004, 02:58 AM
It is totally different. With the fans, and seeing him in real life and all these things, it is just a very unique experience. It was really great, definitely recommend you guys to get tickets for his next tournament to your place. Even the cheapest tickets will do. It doesn't really seem that far when you are in the seat even though it looks far from TV.

ytben

No, I live in Montreal, but I watch the match on tv.Roger is so cute when he speaks french. The commentator were saying how he had not change much since they met him in Florida a few years back.It is nice to hear that.Between summer job and having people over and studying for liscence driver., I had not had much time to check internet.

ytben

I agree, watching live is totally different. TV doesn't really show the pace with which the players hit the ball, it is very fast.
In Roger's case you realise how fast he is on the court, the enormous amount of spin he places on the ball etc

yeah!!! I got to watch Rogi this morning......about 10 minutes of sitting on chair during rain break

couldn't get up earlier for the match :o

Rough start huh? Why does he always have perfect stats on grass but when coming to hardcourt/clay, the UEs will be piling up?

I hope they'll replay his match later on...why do they keep replaying the same haas/agassi match???

Dirk
07-28-2004, 01:49 PM
It was his first match and he hasn't been on hardcourt for a long time. Remember his first match on clay this year after the hard season? He will get cleaner as time goes on.

I hope so Dirk. He's just different on grass though, almost perfect stats right from the start.

It seems to me that everyone suddenly gets very busy after Roger's crazy run in Wimbly and Gstaad, including myself. Guess we all intentionally postpone someof our work till the break season of Roger ;)

LCeh, have a good time there :wavey: Enjoy Roger live and hope for more live reports and also pics :)

Damn rain should really get away from Toronto and definitely not ruin my chance of watching Roger any more:mad:

Rogi won 6-3 7-5 :woohoo:

His FH is somewhat crappy though. But I noticed he came to the net much more than the grass season. Wonder is it because his FH is really inconsistent today that he decided to charge the net more, or because he realized from Wimbly final that S/V to end the point quickly really adds to his game.

Dirk
07-28-2004, 06:07 PM
Rogi put away his S&V game for the most part after the indoor season last year and he built up his baseline game now he is going back to balance out the scale. He was sloppy last night too. Just his first match back from a long break. He will be fine after his next match.

This time you said what I wanted to say, ytben...yanchr said because he's lazy...

I wish I can stay on for other matches but I can't...first time I saw him went on to sign autographs right after the match on court. I seldom see him does that, winning or losing.

Well done Rogi!!!

RonE
07-28-2004, 09:07 PM
Well, I haven't seen the match but from what I heard not the prettiest win of his carreer but the main thing is he got the job done .

Interesting how in their last meeting in Dubai '03 the score was flip-flopped 7-5,6-3.

It's his first match on hard and his first match for 2 weeks- he just needs to shake off some of the rust. It's better that he gets those rusty performances out of the way early on and works his game into a groove in the next match.

I haven't seen the rest of match, but he did pretty well considering that he must be out of rhytm. As long as he clean his game before the US open and Athen, he should be ok.Like he said, he will use Toronto to see where he stand on hardcourt in order to polish his game for later.

LCeh
07-28-2004, 10:28 PM
He was rusty. Missing lots of backhands and forehands. But he did play a little S&V once in a while. Hopefully he will gear up tomorrow.

One thing that really impressed me was after the match was finished, the kids all gathered closed to the exit, and Roger signed EVERY SINGLE one of them. He was still signing when Marat and Kiefer came out. :yeah:

Keep up the good work NINJA!!! :D

mitalidas
07-29-2004, 01:13 AM
he was indeed rusty, but who isn't on the first match after 2 successive titles followed by 2 weeks of R'nR. He won, and that's great.

did you see how much arazi went to his backhand? At this rate, rogi will get so much practice on his backhand, that it will become as great as his forehand!

Dirk
07-29-2004, 01:30 AM
Rogi was great in the 2nd set. His backhand was on and so was everything else. No double faults. He had some great points and was serving and volleying like a god. I would say he was at his A- level in the 2nd set. Excellent stuff I will watch it again. I hope Rogi does great tomorrow.

LCeh
07-29-2004, 01:54 AM
Sorry Dirk, I disagree. His backhand wasn't all that consistent from what I saw. But he was serving and volleying a little, so that's good.

I wasn't able to take any photos today, cause I was too far away from him. :(

ytben
07-29-2004, 03:33 AM

Great match. I hate tiebreaks though, lol, because one point, one mistake, can cost you the set. Thankfully rogi didnt make those errors on key points. Great match, by both, esp. serving. Roger was passing Mirnyi very well, but was inconsistant on his return. Plus, Max serving % was great. He had like 16 backhand winners though. :) :worship: Something like 12 forehand winners. I like Serve & Volley (Max), vs. Baseline play (Roger), because there are alot of winners in this match. Rarely did Roger serve & volley or come to the net, he left that to Mirnyi. ;) Probably Hewitt next. Cant wait, to see Roger beat Hewitt for a fourth time in a row!! :D

RonE
07-29-2004, 10:06 PM
Fedex, wait for Hewitt to win his r16 match first ;)

I must say, I didn't see the matches today (thank you, ESPN :fiery: )however, to win 2 matches in the same day, the second one against a very dangerous player in Max is just :worship: :worship: :worship:
I know Rogi owns a winning record against him, but still it is a bit of Russian Roullette when they play- TBs and all.

I am so impressed with Rogi's concentration levels and his ability to respond to different situations. If I was a manager of a company I would hire him as my primary consultant- this guy is just the ultimate problem solver- he respnds so well to just about every kind of player, prepares his tactics and executes. Keep it up!!!

Yes, Roger did a great job today. He's improved a lot since the first set with Arazi but still searching for his rhythm.

I can't think of anyone who beat Hewitt 4 times in a row.

Good luck tomorrow.

Roger played pretty bad in the first set against Soderling. He picked it up in the second set and against Max.

I finally got Rogi's autograph. :bounce:

He signed it on a page of the Deuce magazine:

LCeh, congrats! :D Where did you ask him for one?

I haven't watched any of Lleyton's matches so not sure about his form. But from the scoreline of his match against Novak, looks like Rogi will need to play much better to defeat him.
Despite his BH and serve was ON against Max, his FH was still shaky. Hopes he get it sorted out soon since he'll need it against Hewitt.

Good luck Rogi! :bounce:

I think so. I think he did more serving and volleying against Soderling than he did against Max. He was mixing his game pretty well in the second set against Soderling Dirk. :)

Santoro was Rogi like tonight. Nobody can do more with a two hander than Santoro. Just amazing. So many great angles. Will be a fun match but I suspect a blow out. Rogi needs a quick one. Rogi will be in the semis if he wins and can only gain points then.

Roger got a break as Santoro took Hewitt out. Santoro can do a lot of things with the ball but I have a feeling Roger's power will not give Santoro the many options of shots that he got with Hewitt.
Hewitt had to be the aggressor against Fabrice and he hates that, very different for Roger though.

Lleyton lost??? Whoa didn't see it coming. I was so sure he'll go through. So the seeds falling out trend continue.

Completely agree on your analysis Wyv. I also thought Hewitt will be a much harder matchup than Santoro for Rogi style wise. And considering Rogi looked a bit tired against Max, I thought Hewitt have a very big chance to beat him if they meet.

Well ytben mentioned that Federer's forehand is still shaky, but really the only thing that was shaky in this match was his returns. Understandable as Max has a huge serve. One of the reasons Federer had so many backhand winners, was because, Max always volleyed to his backhand, so he hit a few more winners off of it. But he hit some great forehands today. And incase youre interested in the h2h between Santoro and Rogi; the head to head is 3-2 in favor of Federer, Federer winning the last 2 matches very convincingly (both indoors), beating him 0 and 4 in 03 Rotterdam, and 03 Davis cup 1, 0, and 2.

Now that Henman and Guga, and Andre and Tommy are out of the tournement :(, its looking more, and more like a Federer-Roddick rematch in the finals. If they do meet i hope Rogi crushes him, so maybe Gilbert wont be so confident that he can actually beat Rogi. One more loss to Federer for Roddick in a big tournement, could potientally ruin him, since he has a big ego, and it might be hard for him to take all these Federer losses. Wishful thinking, i know, thinking that he's just going to fall of the face of the earth, but hey it took Andre several years to find himself after that USO loss to Sampras. (But i strongly suggest his marriage w/ Brook Shields had something to do w/ that. ;) )

I am so hopeless...I slept through all matches last night though my original plan was just a "short" nap before the first Rogi's match but the next thing I knew it was rogi vs Max at 6-5 2nd set... :smash: :o

The stats look crazy though, something like 48/4 to 29/6 of Max for winners/UE with very high % of serves. Whoever said Rogi looked kind of tired/frustrated I agreed, was the same in Arazi's match too, especially with his hair flying all around, he needs some hair pins :tape:

It will be fun to watch Rogi/Santoro instead of Rogi/Hewitt yet another time for me though it can be interesting to see if Rogi still has that "fire" in him (from that DC loss) to throw in another bagel ;)

I BETTER BE AWAKE FOR TODAY'S MATCH!!! :fiery: :o

I think I have said this already. I have a feel like he is waiting for Andre Agassi's coach - Darren Cahill. He was Hewitt's coach before that. Both reached their peaks, one being the youngest #1 and the other the oldest #1 in rankings history. So, I think......

I don't even compared the BH to FH winners ratio when I talked that his FH was shaky. Yeah there are some great shots from his FH side against Max(I didn't watch his match against Robin), but also some easy errors from that side. It was still not as sharp as usual IMO.

Tough one, but Rogi eeked it out somehow.

He really hasn't fired yet in this tournament. I don't know if it's because he is still jaded from his winning run of the past two months, or wether its the jetlag.

Whatever the case, I hope this tournament is where Rogi gets rid of all his "junk" tennis, and it will help him prepare for the USO. I really think though that going to Athens is a big mistake if he hopes to do well @ the Open :(

Looking ahead (admittedly premature because the Johanssons are still playing, although T. is ahead), Rogi should feel good about playing T.Johansson. Does he have a better record against anybody than against T.Johansson? 6-0, from 2000 on

Rogi was fantasic today. He hit 47 winners. I watched most of the 2nd set and his backhand was on. He was hitting amazing passing shots and great net play too. Yeah he made some errors but Santoro was at a high level today. He made only like 3 errors. Rogi had a tough match and though he made some mistakes it was due to Santoro's dazzling game. I think his backhand was better than his forehand today. A very good effort I think. Rogi seems fresh and full of energy. Thomas is fucked for sure tomorrow but I am glad he is back on the tour where he belongs.

Yes, definitely Wyv. I still think it's because of Santoro's lack of pace and weird slices. Roger usually hits the ball into the net instead of overhitting them, so maybe that's an indication.

Wyv, have you seen Andy played in this tournament yet? If Roger plays Andy again, what do you think the outcome of this one will be?

I did not see his last two matches, but he was rusty in the beginning. He was also rusty last week. However, Roger seem to be rusty too.

Dirk
07-31-2004, 01:43 AM
Roger was very good overall. Santoro's game is unqiue and that is why he made errors. Who knows what will happen in the final if they both meet. Its all about who plays better. I do love seeing Rogi coming to the net a lot more though.

WyveN
07-31-2004, 03:02 AM
Wyv, have you seen Andy played in this tournament yet? If Roger plays Andy again, what do you think the outcome of this one will be?

If Roger doesn't improve and Andy plays as well as he did in the Wimbledon final then I think Andy will win, I haven't seen all of Roddick's matches but I think he has played just a bit better then Roger so far.

Part of the reason Roger pulled through in that Wimbledon final is because he is the more natural grass court player but I think Roddick is more comfortable on hardcourts, particularly in the North American region and that may be just enough.

Can't see Kiefer/Johansson stopping a Andy/Roger final and on current form I think Andy will probably win in tight 3 sets.

On the other hand I read that the court is playing very slowly this week so that may deny Roddick some power and give Federer the advantage with his slice backhand, whatever the case it will be good US Open preparation for Roger to play Andy.

Well, everyone based there Wimbledon final predictions based on *form*, and most thought Andy would lose in straights. But Andy DID play his best in the final, Roger looked very unsharp, unlike his previous matches. I think Roger will step it up in the final, and beat Roddick in straights. Santoro plays a totally different game than Andy too, that must be accounted for. He just annoys the fuck out of you with his slicing & dicing. Andy's going to give him pace, unlike Santoro, so he wont make those errors. I personally am Not as confident, if Rogi plays Andy in the final, but i think he'll pull through. One thing that wont cut it for Andy is staying as far back as he is to recieve serve. If he does that against Roger, it will be very one sided indeed. He was standing like 10-15 feet behind the baseline against Lopez. That will give Rogi to many options. And i'm sure Federer will serve much better against Andy this time. If he does, Andy wont have a chance.

I am pretty sure that we are going to have a final against Federer and Roddick again unless if Johansson and Keifer can pull on some upsets. If Federer plays Roddick, I would think that Federer will win this one. He has been playing the best tennis and Roddick is not too far behind him but it is going to be real hard to beat Federer.

I somewhat quite enjoy the match, apart from some shots from Roger after which I called out loud 'STUPID'. Roger was not at all sharp as usual in this whole tournament and was staying a little bit sluggish. I just guess he has a less strong will to win this one, not like the big Wimbly. And I believe his will really counts big if he's gonna win or not.

I'm actually not confident of Roger's win if he is to face Andy in the final. I think maybe Andy will win in 3. In the North American hardcourt season, Andy keeps way more motivated than Roger and somehow luck is also with him. Having said this, I think another Roger-Andy final is inevitable and hope I'm wrong with my feeling.

Go Rogi :)

lsy
07-31-2004, 07:29 AM
We'll never know till they play. Everybody was mostly comfortable about Rogi's chances vs Andy in Wimby if they were to meet coz he was looking all sharp whereas Andy wasn't, but it turned out to be the opposite. Might just as well be the same case here.

At least he had been serving very well and his backhand is looking very sharp. Of course it will be nice if he can win then he would have equalled Pete's winning streaks and best of all it's on 3 different surfaces  :worship: but then if he doesn't, I don't think it's really any big deal.

But of course if he actually makes it to final and were to play against Andy...it does matter to me if he wins or not ;)

Guys, guys, let's not jump the gun like many of us did assuming Federer would play Hewitt only to have Santoro come out and stun him.

In the game of tennis, assumptions and predictions are volatile at best. Let's just wait and see what happens in the semis first before we start talking about the final.

As much as Andy and Roger seem to be the favourites on paper, Johansson can still be a tricky customer if Roger is not up to par, and Kiefer is on one of the best streaks of his life and in no doubt eager for revenge against Roddick after the Indy final.

You are right RonE, but I'm also in no doubt eager to see Roger take revenge against Andy for last year's semi loss and also the loss of World No.1. ;)

Rogi is near his top level. I know and have seen the forehand errors but that was due to Santoro's game. Rogi's bh has been so godly this week. I really think today Rogi will win without trouble and its tough to call against Andy if he ends up playing him. Its all about who plays better that day. I think Andy will be much more pumped up for the match but that doesn't mean he will play at a higher level than Rogi. Who knows????

I'.
I disagree with it. As oppose to grass where he is more natural on it,it would take more time to adapt on hard court again which is why I do believe and lthat he is still sluggish.Andy might not be as sluggish as Roger, but this is in his backyard and he was sluggish in the beginning of the week and last week too.IF both of them play tomorrow, I believe that Roger would have lest to lose than Andy.

I would give a slight edge to Andy because of Roger's inconsistent returns this week. Whenever he gets to 0-30, 15-40 , silly errors start creeping in, and he's robbing himself of a chance to break.

Crap...missing his fh and volleys.

Really crappy volleys he's playing out there, and yes Dirk I will say it here, he looks lazy out there.

COME ON ROGI!!! It's the semifinal now!!!

Dana

Allez Roger! Let's go! I really hope he'll be able to find his game and find a way to win his match... but I'm very nervous.... Roger seems mentally very tired... well.. it's just the beginning of the match but... Please, a lot of 1st serves in an break Johansson back! :)

ytben
07-31-2004, 05:28 PM
Yeah, he looks mentally not all there and still in a bit of a bad mood. He did mention in his interview that he's mentally tired.

Max is watching Rogi :D

Already 8 UEs so far. The only thing that keeps him in the match is his serve. He almost always lost the point if they rallied.

Dana

Dana
07-31-2004, 05:46 PM
Oh... I hope Johansson will be OK and be able to keep playing well... I really want Roger to win but I hate that when other players get injured. And I want Roger to win because he was able to find his wat through and not because Johansson was injured...

lsy
07-31-2004, 05:48 PM
Yes definitely hope that Johansson is ok. Don't want to see him going out like that, he's playing really well out there.

With the way Rogi is playing now he might as well better not be in the final.

First set to Johansson.

Actually I think the Halle-Wimbly-Gstaad run that did it to him. He hasn't recuperated enough.

TJ got the first set 6-4

C'mon Rogi, you can still win this. And hope he will stop looking so unhappy out there

His last matches against Mirnyi and Santoro are not the best prepartion to have your baseline game on... Not a reason though.. Johansson is playing very well...

Find a little something inside you Roger and win this match!!!!! :)
