Just came back home from Stuttgart, where I´ve spent the whole week at the Mercedes Cup. After Hamburg 2002 I finally met Simon Aspelin again, who reached the final there with his partner Todd Perry ( the second final within a week! ). I think Simon is one of the nicest and smartest players on the tour and I think he deserves his own thread here;) I had so much fun meeting him in Stuttgart and watch his matches! This week he´ll play in Umag and after that he´ll play "Bundesliga" in Germany for 3 weeks. I wonder if there are some more Simon-Fans out there ;)

I don´t have my Stuttgart-pics yet, but if there´s a nice one of Simon, I´ll try to post it here ;)

He is always so nice and friendly to everyone, and I am
very happy that he is playing successful finally again!

Does anyone know his next tournaments?

Yep another fan here :)

I discovered him first time at the 2000 Australian Open when he was teamed with Johan Landsberg. Since then I have followed him every year and go to all his Australian Open matches.

He is a lovely guy and after we watched him practice, he chatted to us for ages last year. Then this year he said I had a nice camera... I love my camera so that made my day :p

Anyway... If I managed my attachments correctly, 4 pictures should be appearing below. The first two are from this years Australian Open and the last two are from the 2003 Australian Open :)

Hi!

I don't know anything about Simon, but I just saw him in Umag and thought he was gorgeous. ;) Last year, Perry was in the final there with a different partner (Shimada) and I really hoped he and Simon could be in the finals again, but alas they fell to the Brazilians. I watched part of that match and took a few pics but they didn't come out all too great.

Yesterday I saw Simon again :) He played "Bundesliga" for Sundern in Karlsruhe. Unfortunately Sundern lost to everyones surprise 4-5 - and Simon and his swedisch double-partner Frederik Loven ( also a very nice guy ;) ) lost the important last match ( before that it was 4-4 ).
But anyway it was fun to be there and great to see Simon again ;)

Have you Aspelinettes ;) read this interview, sorry if bad translation(I guess you wouldn't know unless you know Swedish :D ).

I think it's from Båstad this year.

Aspelin choses pension over title.

A Grand Slam title or becoming #1 in the rankings? To Simon Aspelin life in tennis is about other objectives.
- My priority right now is to be able to obtain pension from the tennis-tour, he says.

This story is not about big titles, multi-million contracts or celebrity status. It usually is not for Simon Aspelin. When he takes a walk from his hotel-room in Båstad to the tennis court not many people raise an eye-brow.

He may not be one of the world famous superstars of tennis, but this is something he can do without.
-It's very different from person to person, some people I meet think tennis players live a very glamourous life. Many people think the players make an incredible amount of money, but it's nowhere near the situation in golf and football/ soccer. Only a small group of players is able to put away large amounts of money, he says.

And the 30 year old, originally from Saltsjöbaden(outside Stockh.) but now with a Dalarna-dialect, does not belong to the select group of world superstars which has made hundreds of million sw. cr.. His total career earnings amount to 3,6 million sw. cr.

He became a tennis-pro in 1998, then both as a singles and a doubles player. After a couple of seasons he recognized it was easier for him to succeed in doubles than in singles so the choice of career was an easy one.

Since a couple of years back Aspelin travels the tour. His partners have been replaced but success, albeit on a minor scale, has been on a regular basis. Partnering fellow Swede Johan Landsberg he reached his best so far, a semi-final at the Doubles World Championships in 2000. Since then he has won two titles, among them Båstad last year.

The goal is top 55

Aspelin's highest doubles ranking was 38. Right now he is the world #53.

To stay there is what his hopes are for the end of the year, because if so he has reached his major priority as of now.
-In that case I have met the demands to obtain pension from the ATP-tour, he tells.

The tennis-tour, the ATP, pays pension for players which for at least five years have reached a set ranking. For doubles players it is #55 or better.

-I've been able to do it for four years straight now. If I can accomplish this, then I can look back upon my career and feel like I did a pretty good job.

Then he canreceive a pension from the age of 49 for 20 years on. The amount is based on how many years the player have managed to clear the set ranking.

Would you in that case be financially independent for the rest of your life?

-It depends on your life-style, but I'd say it's enough. I can earn a living from my tennis, that's the most important for me.

The question is how long he wants to be part of the tennis-world? Because only a few places feel fresh nowadays and the constant travelling is no fun anymore.
-I can't say I'm 100% comfortable with this life-style any longer. There are so many superficial acquaintances and it's an artificial world. I look forward to live in one town, have a steady place and spend my time with proper friends.

Will you consider moving back to Dalarna (part of Sweden) after your career?

-No, I don't think so. I've lived in Los Angeles for 3,5 years, and now I live in London. You get used to living in larger cities after a while.

I don´t know where Simon will play in the beginning of 2005, but I could imagine the tournaments like Adelaide and Sydney and then Aussie Open!

Some years ago, Simon was often playing with Johan Landsberg, but they stopped and Simon played with different partners. The last year he has played quite constantly with Perry. But I would wish he´d start to play with a Swede again...:-)

I won't be against Simon in DC, Birte, but Mats could choose him for the next round :) Mats can't pick up 6 Swedes. Simon deserves to be in the team as he plays well in the doubles at the moment. Why all the Swedes are playing sooo well at the moment ?

As I promised you yesterday Siobhan, here is the Simon article from Aftonbladet :)
I guess some others might be interested as well, gell Nathalie ;)

sorry I can´t translate it right now, but it is about that Simon lives in London and how he got to know about the terror attacks there.

Aspelin bodde alltså i London under 11 september–attacken.

[Fiancee?]

They are such a great and sweet guys! And Simon is also very cute
We were cheering for them during all their matches! And in the semis and final, when it was late and there were not many people on the Stadium, we were almost the only one who was cheering for them! And they thanked us for it after the matches. :D
I'm the Bryans fan BTW, but Simon and Todd now is officially my second fav team!

Aspelin & Knowle Take Halle Title

Third seeds Simon Aspelin and Julian Knowle upset second seeds and defending champions Fabrice Santoro and Nenad Zimonjic 6-4, 7-6(5) to win the Gerry Weber Open doubles title. Aspelin and Knowle collected their second title of the year, having won their maiden title at Poertschach two tournaments ago.

Aspelin and Knowle, who have won 10 of their past 11 matches, dropped serve just one time on the lone break point they faced in the match.

Knowle collected his ninth doubles title and Aspelin won his eighth.

Santoro and Zimonjic were looking to win their third ATP doubles title of 2007, having won Dubai in March and the ATP Masters Series event in Rome in May.

WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID

Knowle: "I'm very happy with the way we've been playing since Hamburg. We beat two great teams this week in Damm/Paes and Santoro/Zimonjic. We were a little bit lucky with the deciding points, but to win a tournament sometimes you need a little luck."

Aspelin: "When you look back at the last two months we've beaten some highly-ranked teams and we've played great. We've had to play our best tennis to win, and we were able to do that... We should have a really good Wimbledon."

Santoro: "It was a very tight match but they played better on the big points. I am going to 's-Hertogenbosch now and then Wimbledon, and hopefully we can play as well as we did last year."

Simon&Julian lost to the Bryan brothers in a tight match 7-6(2) 6-4.
It was tough, but they didn't take their break opportunities in the first, and in the second I feel Julian choked a bit. He served many DF today. Disappointing that they couldn't quite break either twin.

However, I think it is encouraging. They got one good win, and had a tight loss to the best team in the world, so hopefully they'll have confidence going into the USO:)

US OPEN - Flushing Meadows, New York, U.S.A.

September 5, 2007, Aspelin, Knowle To Face Dlouhy, Vizner for Doubles Crown

Simon Aspelin, Julian Knowle Less than eight months since joining forces, Simon Aspelin and Julian Knowle reached their first Grand Slam final as a partnership on Wednesday afternoon, defeating French tandem Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut in the semifinals of the US Open, 7-6(2), 1-6, 6-3.

The two pairings, which were both surprise semifinalists, were close in the early goings, trading breaks just once in 12 service games en route to a tie-break. Aspelin and Knowle, the No. 10 seeds, came out on top there, closing out the first set in 53 minutes. The unseeded combo of Benneteau and Mahut rebounded, taking the second set in just 30 minutes, but Aspelin and Knowle broke serve one more time in the second game of the decider and held on for the two-hour, seven-minute semifinal victory.

Aspelin and Knowle joined forces just after the Australian Open in January and have already earned three doubles titles together on the ATP circuit, at clay court events in Poertschach and Bastad and on grass at Halle. Their run to the US Open final is a stark contrast to their first two Grand Slam tries, having fallen in the third round of Roland Garros and in the first round at Wimbledon.

After a comprehensive opening round win and a walkover in their second match, Aspelin and Knowle have defied the odds for two straight rounds, bouncing No. 8 seeds Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram in the third round and No. 1-seeded Bob and Mike Bryan in the quarterfinals. They pulled off both upsets in straight sets.

Only Knowle has been this far in a Grand Slam doubles draw before, a runner-up at Wimbledon in 2004 (with Nenad Zimonjic). Apart from that result, neither Aspelin nor Knowle had ever been beyond the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam before this.

Benneteau and Mahut also pulled off a major upset en route to the semis, beating No. 4 seeds Martin Damm and Leander Paes. The two were in their second major semifinal as a team, having reached the final four at this venue three years ago.

In the final, Aspelin and Knowle face No. 9 seeds Lukas Dlouhy and Pavel Vizner, who ousted No. 5 seeds Paul Hanley and Kevin Ullyett, 6-4, 6-2, in just 66 minutes.

Like Aspelin and Knowle, Dlouhy and Vizner are also a relatively new pairing, having played their first event together at the beginning of 2006. Since then they have captured a total of three titles - two last year at Costa Do Sauipe and Estoril, and one this year at Costa Do Sauipe. All three of those came on clay courts.

This is Dlouhy and Vizner's second Grand Slam final as a team, having finished runners-up to Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor at Roland Garros earlier this year. En route to this fortnight's final, they ousted the No. 2-seeded Knowles and Nestor. While it will be Dlouhy's second individual Grand Slam final, Vizner will be playing his third, having finished runner-up at Roland Garros in 2001 with Petr Pala.

Aspelin-Knowle Capture First Grand Slam Crown

No. 10 seeds Simon Aspelin of Sweden and Julian Knowle of Austria captured their first career Grand Slam title with a 7-5, 6-4 victory in one hour and 22 minutes over the Czech duo of No. 9 seeds Lukas Dlouhy and Pavel Vizner.

Aspelin and Knowle, teaming together for the first time this season, dropped only one set throughout the tournament. They defeated No. 8 seeds Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram in the third round and World No. 1 Bob and Mike Bryan in the quarterfinals.

The only break in the first set came in the 11th game as Vizner was broken at 15-40. Knowle then saved one break point in the next game to close out the set.

In the second set, Dlouhy was broken in the opening game but Aspelin lost his serve in the next game. Both teams held serve until the seventh game when Vizner was broken at 0-40. Aspelin served it out in the 10th game, converting on his third match point.

Aspelin-Knowle converted three of eight break points and Dlouhy-Vizner one of four.

The 33-year-old Aspelin became the seventh Swede to capture a Grand Slam doubles title in the Open Era and the fourth at the US Open, joining Jonas Bjorkman, Stefan Edberg and Anders Jarryd.

The 33-year-old Knowle became the first Austrian man to win a Grand Slam doubles title in the Open Era and the first from his country to win any Slam crown since Thomas Muster won the Roland Garros singles title in 1995. Knowle was runner-up at Wimbledon (w/Zimonjic) in 2004.

Aspelin-Knowle improved their record to 27-10 on the season with their fourth title together. They won titles in Portschach, Halle and Bastad. Overall, it was the 10th career title for Aspelin and the 11th for Knowle.

Dlouhy-Vizner, who reached the final at Roland Garros (l. to Knowles-Nestor) in June, were also attempting to capture their first Grand Slam title. Vizner was also runner-up in Roland Garros in 2001 (w/Pala). Dlouhy-Vizner are 1-3 in finals this season.

They were bidding to become the first all-Czech team to win a Grand Slam men's doubles title in the Open Era. Czech teams are 0-7 in Grand Slam doubles finals.

WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID

Aspelin: "It's an unbelievable feeling. I think it's going to take a few hours for it to sink in, this week, to really think about it. But at the moment it's a dream come true. It's an amazing feeling."

"We played them in the third round of the French Open, and they played extremely well and beat us pretty badly. We were saying that Dlouhy-Vizner is one team when they're playing really good we don't quite know how to play them. Today we were expecting a really, really tough match. We just focused on trying to play as good as we have been the last couple of weeks."

Knowle: "As Simon said, a dream came true. I think it takes a couple of days even to realize what we achieved the last two weeks. The pressure was getting pretty big the last couple of days because we knew we were playing really well and we had a big chance to win this whole thing. To make it happen is just great."

"Pavel, he's very solid pretty much in everything. He returns well. He serves really solid. He's very good at the net. With his partner (Lukas) he's very dangerous. He has great hands. He's more a little bit up and down, but he's a very dangerous player. He returns really hard. He has the pace. He can serve big. But he can also throw in a couple of double faults."

ASPELIN KNOWLE/Dlouhy Vizner

7-5, 6-4

THE MODERATOR: Questions.

Q. How does it feel to be Grand Slam champions? First time for both of you.
SIMON ASPELIN: It's an unbelievable feeling. I think it's going to take a few hours for it to sink in, this week, to really think about it.
But at the moment it's a dream come true. It's an amazing feeling.
JULIAN KNOWLE: As Simon said, a dream came true. I think it takes a couple of days even to realize what we achieved the last two weeks. The pressure was getting pretty big the last couple of days because we knew we were playing really well and we had a big chance to win this whole thing. To make it happen is just great.

Q. This is your first year playing together. How did you decide to team together? Why do you think is working for you?
JULIAN KNOWLE: Well, I started the year with Jurgen Melzer, an Austrian player. He got injured on his wrist in March. I was looking for a partner for the season, also for the next couple weeks. I asked Simon because I knew he was looking for partners. He had another partner where he was playing the whole year long, he was changing. I called him up, said, Listen, you want to try those couple tournaments? He said, Yes, sure.
Immediately it worked pretty well. The first tournament we played we made semis in Monte Carlo, and then we made semis in Hamburg. We won a tournament in Austria. Then we just kept playing, and it worked really well.

Q. The summer hard court season you didn't have such a great season. What changed here?
SIMON ASPELIN: Well, we didn't have -- we had a couple of weeks where we didn't play so good, but it was just a couple of -- there was a couple of details that we didn't do so well. But the rest of the game was quite good. We knew if we could just change a couple of things in the game and get that to start working again we would be dangerous. We played really, really good at the beginning of the summer. You know, we knew we had the game to beat the best teams.

Q. You seemed to guess really well on which way they were going when they were trying to poach off the serve. Is that a strength of yours?
SIMON ASPELIN: I think one of our strengths when we're playing is that we normally return well. We rely a lot on our returns. Just trying to serve well, hold serve, then we put pressure on them by returning well.
I think it's one of our bigger strengths, our returning part.

Q. Your opponents had a good season this year. Did you play a special strategy today against them?
SIMON ASPELIN: No. We were talking about it yesterday 'cause we played them in the third round of the French Open, and they played extremely well and beat us pretty badly. We were saying that Dlouhy/Vizner is one team when they're playing really good we don't quite know how to play them. Today we were expecting a really, really tough match. We just focused on trying to play as good as we have been the last couple of weeks.
But we didn't have that much of a strategy how to play them because they're very, very difficult to play when they're playing well.

Q. What can you say about the quality of your opponents, their game?
JULIAN KNOWLE: Well, normally they both return really, really well. Pavel, he's very solid pretty much in everything. He returns well. He serves really solid. He's very good at the net. With his partner he's very dangerous. He has great hands. He's more a little bit up and down, but he's a very dangerous player. He returns really hard. He has the pace. He can serve big. But he can also throw in a couple of double faults. He comes up with the bigger shots at the net, like more exciting ones, but he off and on misses also. He's more up and down where instead Pavel is really solid in everything and he's playing great, I think the best tennis of his career the last couple of weeks.

Q. How important was the first break in the match?
JULIAN KNOWLE: Well, I had a feeling we were the better team at the beginning. We had break chances almost in every game, 15-40 twice and one more breakpoint. You want to get the break under your belt because you also have a feeling if you don't break maybe they get one chance late in the set and you end up losing the set. I think it was big that we broke.

Q. Simon, you follow a strong Swedish tradition of doubles at Grand Slams. Does that have any meaning for you?
SIMON ASPELIN: It's great to be part of it now, having won a big tournament. But growing up you get inspired and motivated from watching your countrymen do so well in the tournaments. Now recently Jonas in the last few years having so much success in the big tournaments. It motivates you to try to do as well as possible.

I watched the interview online, they looked kind of shy, you know!!:) Search for US Open interviews on AOL I think and you can find it.

Also, I did experimental calculations of the rankings come Monday.

1. Bob Bryan
1. Mike Bryan
3. Daniel Nestor
3. Mark Knowles
5. Nenad Zimonjic
6. Pavel Vizner 3610
7. Paul Hanley 3385
7. Kevin Ullyett 3385
9. Fabrice Santoro 3370
10. Julian Knowle 3355
11. Jonas Bjorkman 3255
12. Max Mirnyi 3125
13. Simon Aspelin 3030
14. Arnaud Clement 3000
15. Lukas Dlouhy 2975

But, of course, these may have errors in them, but they are more or less accurate. :)

So they both reach career highs, Julian is in the top 10 :bounce: and Simon is at #13, :D :bounce: Hopefully he can edge out Santoro and get into the top 10 before the year ends!!
It saddens me but Bjorkman/Mirnyi won't even be able to defend the 750 points from Masters Cup, so it may be close to a sure thing he can move ahead of them.

:):) Let's go Simon & Julian !! Rest well before your next tournaments, enjoy the success

Knowle und Doppelpartner Aspelin kommen als US-Open-Sieger nach Wien

Wien - Die US-Open-Doppel-Sieger Julian Knowle und Simon Aspelin haben am Mittwoch ihr Antreten bei der 22. Tennis-BA-CA-Trophy bekanntgegeben.

Aspelin & Knowle Close on Masters Cup Berth

Knowle and Aspelin Oct. 17, 2007 - US Open champions Simon Aspelin and Julian Knowle went a long way to securing their place at Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai by reaching the quarterfinals of the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Masters on Wednesday. The fifth seeds defeated Spaniards Nicolas Almagro and David Ferrer 6-4, 6-2.

Aspelin and Knowle added 25 points to move into fourth place in the Stanford ATP Doubles Race, leapfrogging 2006 US Open champions Martin Damm and Leander Paes, who suffered a surprise 6-2, 6-3 defeat to Australians Jordan Kerr and Todd Perry.

Aspelin and Knowle could climb to No. 3 if they reach the Madrid final after current third-placed team Paul Hanley and Kevin Ullyett suffered a stinging 6-3, 6-1 loss to Argentines Guillermo Canas and David Nalbandian, whom Aspelin and Knowle will play next.

As Grand Slam champions, Aspelin and Knowle would still qualify for Tennis Masters Cup in the unlikely event they finished outside the Top 8, provided that they finished ahead of Wimbledon champions Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra (or if Clement/Llodra finished inside the Top 8). The Frenchmen, who are in ninth position in the Race but more than 100 points behind Aspelin and Knowle, are not playing together this week.
