What's with Federer and his antics?

I just read a piece on Federer talking about how he was happy Rafa got the No. 1 as he didn't want to lose it by playing badly. Now that really baffles me. Credit to Rafa. He is a great player and he has earned the No. 1 spot under the current circumstances, but you can't just tell me Federer thinks he is playing well and has lost the No. 1 spot by playing? Maybe he should cut down on his exhibition matches. Playing with Sampras, hanging out with Jose, and having a false pregnancy alarm from Mirka all doomed Roger this year. But he is walking around with the doubles gold like he's won a real tournament. Please. That's fools' Gold!

Fed has made the finals of 2 majors this year so it's not like he's playing poorly. Sure, his level has decreased from what it used to be but he is still having a better season than over 99% of the players on tour. He is right in saying that Rafa went out and earned it.

Disappointing. I thought you were going to talk about his weird antics with Stan. :aplot:

Dude. I know you are hard Rafa fans. I respect you but don't tell me Rafa would be No.1 if Federer had matched last year's performance minus the Wimbledon. Rafa winning the Wimbledon wouldn't have been enough if Federer was not bombing on Hard Courts. Rafa has earned it but partly because of the dip in Roger's form. I still take Novak's year over Roger. Roger is the third best player in the world no matter what the experts claim.

Fed's had a dip in form, but let's remember that he could very well have two GS titles this year had Nadal not been in the finals to stop him. Winning the French and Wimbledon would have been enough to keep Federer on top. But (and I'm no Nadal fan, so it pains me to say this) Rafa was too good in those finals. So I think it's legitimate for Federer to say that Nadal took the no. 1 spot from him by playing better.

I mean, it's not like women's tennis right now where a bunch of different girls are becoming no. 1 not because they're taking with good results but because of the poor results from their fellow top players.

You are right, people tend to forget that the standard Roger set throughout the past few years has been extraordinary and might well never been seen again. Of course, to the Roger-standard, this has been a bad year for him, but like you say, a very big majority of players would perhaps like to offer a limb to be able to reach 2 GS finals and 1 semifinal...

There's no question that Rafa fully deserves that #1 spot now.
Not just because Roger's level went down, but more because Rafa's level went UP. He had to work for it very hard, and very long, and on top of that, had to deal with the knowledge that he'd already been #1 for a year or two were it not that he plays in the same era as Roger.
It shouldn't be so hard for certain people to acknowledge Rafa's great achievement...

What would you want him to say??
"Rafa did not take it from me I gave it to him" would that be better???

It has nothing to do with Wimbledon, Hamburg or Monte Carlo finals. Had Federer reached the finals of events such as Miami, Indian Wells, Toronto, and Cincinati, he would be still No. 1. Losing to guys such as Fish, Stepanek, Roddick, and other nobodies is why Roger is not No. 1 anymore. Nadal has had an amazing year but not that much better than Federer as far as ranking points are concerned (if Roger was reaching the finals). Roger was No. 1 and Nadal was No. 2 so there was no way for them to meet before the finals, so if Roger had done his part and lost to Nadal every time, he would still be No. 1. But now Nadal will end the year as No. 1 and probably enter Roland Garros Next year as No.1 so who cares.

Uhh, I think he's saying he's happy that the guy who took the spot has delivered. I don't think his statement implies that his own off year didn't play a part. Of course it did, but he's happy Rafa has shown he's worthy of holding the spot.

Mirka had a pregnancy scare! Damn I'm missing all the tennis gossip. I really need to visit this place more often.

Federer is a gentleman, and respects Nadal (unlike some of his fans). so chooses to give credit where credit is due, instead of trying to belittle.

If Roger had come out with a statement saying "Nadal is only No.1 because I'm not playing my best", that would make Roger appear both petty and arrogant.

I would go even further. Even if he said that it would not be arrogant, because he doesn´t say how someone else is able to play good.

Everyone who posts here must be aware what he would answer if someone asks him or her why another player has more points than yourself. Maybe-just to keep my face-I would say something like "I will get him, I just have to find my game". Of course every commentator would state this as arrogance.

:yeah:
And why not, I dare to ask. Roger has been saying that he thinks that Rafa should be his deserved successor for at least two years now, and all he's saying there is that, indeed, Rafa came up with the excellent game & season to be able to do so.

What Rafa fans are upset with what Roger said? I think what Roger said was perfectly fine.

The OP for this thread is not a Rafa fan so I don't really understand why you are getting angry at Rafa fans here. A Rafa fan did not start this thread.....

Don't get it either. I've noticed quite a few fans from BOTH sides being upset with that quote, and I honestly don't get any clue WHY. Nothing wrong with it at all.

Why do threads like this get moved to player forums rather than just being deleted?
