Thought we should start a thread up for the Olympics since they start tomorrow.

I have posted a picture of Willy and other Argies to start with.

Monaco looks realy thin since his bout of pneumonia (sp!)

If anyone wants to change the title go ahead.

It's going to be so hard for them leaving the cold season in Argentina and having to deal with the heat and humidity of Beijing...a bigger challenge for them than the guys who left the heat of Cincy. Good Luck to a great team.

I think the guys will be fine as they train all the time in the heat. The smog will be the problem. Hoping that Willy has got his mojo back and plays really well. In the picture I thought he looked really relaxed and happy. Will his coach Gaston be going with him or is it just the Argentina team captain. Willy looked hott. Sorry just having a girl moment.

I have posted the draw for you. Unfortunately if Willy gets through his first rd match Soderling is waiting for him in the 2nd round.

I agree not the best draw but what's new so we have to deal with it. and frankly he has to beat players like Soderling if he wants to get back to where he was. Good Luck Willy

Ok I was scoreboard watching and Willy has retired. Snoo if you are around I thought you were joking about his wrist.

No he didn't retire the other guy retired, Niemeyer, Niemeyer won the first set then Willy went up 4-2 in the second and the other dude retired. I don't know what happened to Niemeyer, maybe he hurt himself, cuz he obviously was playing OK in the first set.

But I am under the impression that his wrist is not in good shape but this is cuz I convinced myself that I can read Portuguese, which I can't. But losing a set to Niemeyer is not reassuring, frankly I think Willy lucked out on that one... :awww:

I was just about to come and said he didn't retire. The reason I thought he retired was the scoreboard I was watching had retired against his name. Sorry for the confusion.

I am not pissed off anymore. Snoo I hope his wrist is going to hold up as I want him to play well and I think him and Nalby can do some damage in the doubles.

Nice to see you around btw.

woohoo another stroke of good luck for Willy, Soderling loss. I have tried to insert a smiley but my computer won't let me. Hopefully Willy will play a lot better against the French dude. Dont know when his match will take place as there is a backlog of matches due to bad weather.

Also congrats to Nalby and JDMP for their wins today.

Weel, the "French dude" is Simple Simon and he's been doing very good lately so I doubt it will be easier for Willy :scared:

I found this on Nalby's site and wanted to share. I have found a photo of Willy on Monaco's site.

THE DAY IN WHICH CAÑAS AND NALBANDIAN CRIED
Tennis player Guillermo Cañas expressed today his satisfaction for the first Olympic medal gotten for Argentina, from the Judo player Paula Pareto. He said that "that olimpic spirit is the one I came looking for", and confessed that Nalbandian and himself cried with emotion.

Cañas told us an anecdote from the olimpic village, about the young judo plaer, who became the first argentinian in the histoy of that sport to get a medal in the olympic games.

"It was a very special situation, we had finished training in the afternoon and with David (Nalbandian ) and Diego Rivas we wanted to go to the gym and exersise and bit more. There was the tv on in there and the judo competition was on and we saw there was a tiny argentinian flag. "the guys must be competing, let's get togethe",I said to the rest", started telling us his story.

"Near the tv, there was a group of cubans who were also judo players. So when we started to watch, we saw there was a discussion with a referee and we started to ask what was going on cause we didn't understand anything. the Cubans told us that the Argetinian had won and it was for a medal. So we sticked around a bit longer." added Cañas.

"We saw it through till they gave her the medal. In that moment, we were right in front of the tv and were watching a very emotional moment. So a tear fell, but I dind't want to see behind me cause there were David and Rivas. So I look to one side and saw that David was also crying. Are you moved?, I asked him. "Yes, I'm also moved, he said"

The story doesn't end there. "At night, I had to go to sleep early, but we all wanted to keep feeling the joy. So, some of us stick around outside the hotel, we were like ten, talking about life and she arrived. It was an amazing moment, all of us clapping and chanting... The guys from judo had brought a flag for her", went on with his story.
"I don't think it was planned to have that medal on the very first day of the competition. But living that olimpic spirit, what we felt in the ceremony and in this moment, which I didn't live it personally, but from a side of it, was just what I came here looking for".

Thanks for that story :)
Yes, what they feel must be overwhelming.
I admit I also tend to shed a tear when I see those athletes emotions. All the hard work they have been doing and then there is the climax or the anticlimax...

A very nice story indeed, i like the way he openly speaks.
and you are right these moments at the olympics are very emotional because for some sports they live and train for the olympics because it is the only place where they would be remembered. And specially if you are watching one winning a medal for your country, I still clearly remember how I felt in athens when a wrestler won a golden medal for egypt (the first since sooo long :o) .

Well I don't know what is going on with him. I though he would come out and be really inspired and played good tennis. I hope he is ok though. I'm so annoyed with him, hopefully he didn't stay up and watch the Argies lose the doubles to the Aussies.

Oh well he can now enjoy the Olympics and maybe train for the USO. I really do hope he is ok.

His left wrist was taped up & he had the trainer out for it after the 1st set (or he had the trainer out for something...) :awww: He was hanging with Gilles in the 1st set but then he really kind of lost it in the second, he got broken in the 2d game of the second after about 20 deuces and after that he started pressing and making really uncharacteristically bad errors. Gilles had him totally winded which is also not something I'm used to seeing. Luckily he loosened up a bit at 5-0 in the 2d and managed to spare himself a bagel... arrrrgh.

Thanks Snoo for the report how did you have coverage of the match. I am so jealous. No tennis coverage in Australia. Hoping the rest of the Argies do well. Is your man Llodra still in?

His wrist injuries are a bit of a worry and he must be very frustrated. Like I said hope he enjoys the rest of the OG as he seems like a team player and gets involved.

 I'm afraid I more or less expected this having in mind Simon's form lately...

I couldn't follow it (middle of the night over here) so thanks for the report Snoo.
What you say about his wrist kinda worries me

I also read on TW that they thought the trainer came out to look out his thigh (luck trainer) and he was having a hard time breathing.

I just hope he gets himself fit as he still seems motivated and interested. I will try and post the pic from Monaco's site.

Maybe he was struggling with the air pollution?
