i read the papers today. i hope the tennis courts aren't too hot as they make them out to be. apparently, it can get scorching hot there. like an oven? i kid you not. that's the reference that was made. and i thought the heat in singapore was terrible. i should stop complaining.

anyways, opening ceremony tomorrow!

ClubFed
08-07-2008, 05:13 PM
Yeah, I heard about that. Robredo said that even though they spent last week in Cincinatti, it was still hotter in Beijing. I hope the courts aren't like the old Australian Open courts that get sticky when it's hot.

the court surface at the olympics is similar to that at usopen.
so i think it will be giving erno some advantages.
i hope he plays the night session so it won't be that hot.
but on the other hand im holding a day session tkt. so...but i'm thinking of exchange anyway.
it's a tough draw already. i hope all the best for ernie!

If we're desperate and Ernie's match isn't televised, the organisers are providing live scores here:

http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/ENG/Schedule/2008-08-09.shtml

Click on the relevant date at the the top of the page, scroll down to Tennis, and choose which time frame you want (in blocks of 30 minutes.) It'll take you to the match(es) in progress, then click on the particular match you want.

Māris Rīmenis is commenting the match on our TV. He said Ernests is not living in the Olympic village, didn't understand the reason. He also said he's been talking to Ernests but not about his chances in the match because Ernests didn't want to do that. He's been avoiding press before the match. But after the match he will be happy to give interviews.

He also said that Gulbis's weight is 80-82 kg, not 76 like in the official sites. Just a random fact.

After his rather quick loss Gulbis looked like he'd just been dragged out of a swimming pool.

"I'm upset about the result but I have nothing to reproach myself for, I did the maximum that I could today. I felt sick already after the first set and I called the trainer. But he couldn't really help me during the match. I was practicing here twice a day for 40 minutes but didn't feel really well. The fact that I played several rounds in Cincinnati and came here later than others was definitely a factor, I had less time for acclimatization. I was tired early in the evening, couldn't sleep in the morning."

"It wasn't hot today but the humidity was high. When you don't feel well physically you can't serve like you normally do. But Davydenko was playing very well, made few errors and won the points he needed. The Olympic tournament is just one of many tournies in the season but it was one of the most important ones for me so I'm upset/bitter/sad that I wasn't able to play as well as I wanted to. These were my first Olympic games but not the last ones, I hope."

I couldnt watch the match... This morning when I found out the score I was pretty sorry for Ernie, even if I was not expecting a victory over Nikolay. But the most worrying (does this word exist?) thing is knowing in which condition poor Ernests was/is! I imagine how he should have felt: unsettled bcoz of the flights, tired for not sleeping -- you wake up in the morning after you barely slept a few hours: and you KNOW you have not only to work, but also to do your best, and you KNOW you're not in your best conditions, and feel unconfortable... it often happens to me before my exams, to feel like that because of sleepless nights, and it's like hell, to me -- and feeling like he couldnt move in that air that probably seemed like suspended water ...
I really hope he can have some reasonable rest at home, so he feels well soon again.
And then, look forward to the US open!! C'mon Ernests!

I live in the North, in the Po Valley to be exact, and here we usually have something like 80-90% humidity in the summer (if not more, on the worst days). In the South of Italy, instead, the climate is much more dry, more similar to Spain and Greece... (but I dont yearn for moving there). perhaps you went there..?

Really? I was thinking about Spain but Australia sounds invitating, too..;)

We were in Australia last year during autumn and I loved it. It's nice for a change to experience that climate.

All year here.. we feel like we're inside an oven :o. The coldest temp we get is 25 degrees celcius.

No, it's a little different. This is about Phaedra (me), married to Theseus (Ainars), falling in love with Hippolytus (Ernests). But when Phaedra's passion is revealed to him, he reacts with such revulsion that she kills herself, leaving a note accusing Hippolytus. Theseus, refusing to believe Hippolytus’ protestations of innocence, banishes him and calls down upon him one of the three curses the sea god Poseidon gave to him. So Poseidon sends a sea monster that frighten Hippolytus’ horses until he can no longer control them. They smash the chariot and dragg their master to death.

Great play, to me. A little bit cruel, but still great. I would never accuse Ernests, anyway. But I'd hope he didnt reject me...

translation of the first article:

Young and hardly stoppable

With his qualification for Olympia a dream came true earlier than planned for the 16 year old. Raphaël Stacchiotti is the youngest Luxembourger who ever participated in the olympic games.

His goal was London 2012, now he travels to Beijing as the youngest Luxembourgish participant in the olympic games ever. For the 16 year old RS the dream came closer with each competition. He secretly expected to undercut the IOC norm at the 200m freestyle. But he would never admit it openly. "Surprized" is what he says he was when he qualified for Olympia at the international swim meeting in Belgrad. Only when he came up from the water and saw the national trainer ingolf bender holding his thumb up, he started to realize he had enormously improved his performance again. "but that I'll be going to Beijing with the Luxembourgish delegation is still hard to believe for me" Actually he was preparing above all for the junior world championships in Monterrey in Mexico, claims the sportsman. But we don't really buy that, neither does his mother: "he knew he could make it to the olympic games", she says confidently.
Without his parents' help, the everyday life of the young man would be very hard to deal with. "I plan his schedule, but above all I'm his personal driver.", says his mom. Raphaël trains all in all 8 times a week. twice he does power training, besides of the swimming. for a sportsman on olympia-level, this is quite few, but Raphaël is "additionally" a student at the "lycée de garçons" in limpertsberg. When he has tests, his days are even harder than usually. Only for the coming autumn he will trade to a class at the national sportinstitution (INS). Then he will have enough time and an optimal condition for 10-11 training units per week.

In the house of the Stacchiottis a clear rule exists: sport comes first as long as the marks are ok. But Raphaël is not only in a good physical shape, he seems to be mentally fit to bear the double burden. There is no excitement whasoever: "I won't put pressure on me", he emphasizes. to be there is what counts? His ambitions are a bit too high for that though. He will do his best at the olympic games. "no, more than that" he corrects himself. "I want to at least break the national record." Despite all the faith it seems to be too early to expect a semifinal. After all he's only at the beginning of his career.

The decision for swimming

At the age of 4 he started at the swimming club in Rédange, already at 8 he came to Ettelbruck to the trainer Jacqueline Mailliet. At that time he played tennis (:D) with the same enthusiasm and talent. But playing 2 sports at the highest level, wouldn't have been possible: "one day I had to decide".
If he loses early at the competition in Beijing, he'll be looking forward to visiting China as an ordinary tourist, or to cheering for other Luxembourgish participants from the stands. He'll be away from home for one month. His parents are still trying to find the last tickets for the swim competitions, but officially they are already sold out. The 1,82m tall young man doesn't have a girlfriend yet:"we'll see when I get back from Beijing." Lucky at the game, unlucky in love: we can only hope that the saying doesn't apply for the successful swimmer.

that's it for the first article, I hope the translation is not too crappy lol
but why oh why did he choose swimming over tennis???

Nice article ;) looks like everyone in Luxembourg was very disapointed with his result. He claimes he wasn't nervous, but reading the first part of the article does make me believe there might have been to much pressure for this 16-year old, hence he must have been nervous :o (only an impression to me) I agree when he says that he can't blame it on attending the opening ceremonie. There were plenty of days in between to recover from that.

that pic makes me want to hug him :awww:

I think he just simply can't handle those situations yet. because I wasn't under the impression we were putting too much pressure on him. he needs more of those experiences, I'm sure that's what's gonna help him most now

Maybe it's a good thing he didn't make the semifinals. Now he has the chance to gain a lot of experience and hopefully he can enjoy his stay there, so he's prepared for London 2012. (yeah, that's already a second atlete to look forward to )

1.82m for a 16 year old, that's tall
