I wanted to wait til the pics and videos were uploaded before posting this but they're taking forever so I figured I'd post this now and i'll post the link to the pics and vids tomorrow

I have no money so the only tennis I get at the LA tourney this year is the practice day on Sunday. Luckily for me, I saw all the players in the draw I like :p

I got there around 10:15 and the guy tells me I can't get in and that there are no practices til noon. But I could hear balls being hit. LOL. so I walked up the hill and found they had opened some of the emergency exit gates, so yay. So in the stadium, Fish was practicing with.... I think David Martin. I imagine he wanted to play a lefty to prepare for Falla in the first round. Anyway, nothing exciting here really. Fish's forehand still blows chunks and I have no idea who's coaching him. Oh, and he had a 'harem' of sorts consisting of his fiancee and four older women :rolls:

I hadn't been to the practice day in a few years - last time I went they wouldn't let us go down the stairs to the grandstand or practice court, but this year they did! Lopez, looking especially metro in this tight brown and pink number, was hitting with someone I know looks very familiar but I need help putting a name to the face.

11:00 rolled around so I figured the courts would be changing (and I saw both Safin and Haas enter the grounds about 15 min before)..... and there they were on the stadium, hitting the crap out of the ball. Really, Haas especially looked great, he was killing his BH down the line. They were playing some kind of practice match/games and Marat kept getting frustrated, what else is new :) Oh, and Haas's girlfriend is disgustingly thin. that's all.

Watched them for some time, then checked out the grandstand, where Lopez's unidentified practice partner was now hitting with Grosjean, who somehow missed both Christmas and Christmas in July.... anyway, always nice to see cheerful Seb. So I went back to the stadium, mainly because there was shade there  and watching Haas/Safin was fun anyway.

At noon, John Isner came out with Igor Kunitsyn, which seemed like a bit of an odd pair, but the players don't seem to interact much anyway. They're all cordial to each other and shake hands and say hi when they're coming and going.... except for one poor lonely ignored soul. Poor Vinny Ice (today all decked out in his purple blinged hat with his fro logo :o:haha: ) has no friends - not even his compatriot Isner says hello. Later I heard this guy telling someone on the phone that Spadea's hitting partner didn't show up so he was throwing up balls for himself and hitting shots off them :sobbing: :haha: Anyway, Isner is huge. I know, stating the obvious. But he really is. He's also incredibly nice and was signing autographs and taking pictures with fans on his way in before his practice - the only player I saw do that to that extent.

there was no way in hell I was gonna watch Spadea, so I watched a few min of Malisse practicing with Wayne Odesnik and then sought some shade at the practice court where Verdasco was practicing with Falla. They were really going all out. Verdasco especially got upset whenever he missed. But he looked solid. And good on him, he had a visible layer of sunscreen smeared all over ;)

Unable to be without his dear friend for too long, Lopez was back and went into Verdasco's practice. At 2, the two of them moved to the stadium where they practiced for an hour (so a second hit for each of them). They warmed up and started playing a practice set and the intensity was pretty high. Feli was serving big but Verdasco was pretty much kicking his ass

Then at 3 on the Grandstand Court, Moya was hitting with Safin - I don't know why, but Safin hitting twice in one day sort of amused me. At the same time, Del Potro was hitting on the stadium with.....someone. Del Potro gets the "hitting the absolute shit out of the ball" award today, he was creaming it off both wings.

By now, everyone had heard that Roddick was practicing at 4, so I settled in under some shade. Andy was in an unusually good mood today, joking with his brother and trainer Doug and some buddy that was on court with them. Good news is that his backhand looked really damn good, spot on, low over the net, deep in the court, nice and flat - good angles and down the line in the corners - better than I can remember seeing it, to be honest. Where that is during his matches lately is beyond me. Bad news (for his fans anyway:p) is that he didn't hit any serves or overheads at all, and he didn't even hit many normal forehands - he was slicing and squashing most of them especially after the first few minutes of his practice (see videos). At one point fairly early in the practice he hit a few really oddly like with his left arm still against his body (he was messing around) and he joked with John that the form was terrible but "at least it doesn't hurt when I hit it this way".... He was also talking to Doug during the practice more than I remember him usually doing, and he kinda stretched his neck a few times. so something is still definitely not right :awww:

I know he's my favorite so I'm hardly unbiased, but I like a wole lot of the other players I saw today too and I can easily say Roddick is by far the most entertaining player to watch in practice - joking around, interacting with the fans, being in general silly like hitting funny shots to be intentionally funny, and messing around with his team, he's the only one who looks like he's having any fun or who cares that the fans are there.

Anyway, then Malisse came out to practice again and then they kicked us out at 5pm. The pictures and videos are uploading now - I took a lot and they're uploading slowly, but I will ask for ID of a couple players when I have them and will post the links...

Regarding Andy, I read this on another site. What do you make of it?

Posted this in the Cincinnati thread, but it seems like it warrants a mention in here:

Interesting Andy Roddick related...not sure what to classify this as... junk, I suppose. A friend of mine works at the Children's Hospital in Cincinnati, where the Monday before he was supposed to start, Andy visited. My friend was relating the fact that he gave a child with meningitis a big hug, which my friend thought was a bit sketchy, since meningitis is apparently very contagious. Fast forward to Tuesday, where Andy Roddick pulls out of this first match due to neck stiffness. Guess what one of the symptoms are meningitis is.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meningitis

"Severe headache is the most common symptom of meningitis (87 percent) followed by nuchal rigidity ("neck stiffness", found in 83%)."

If Andy's traveling the world, staying in huge hotels, and visiting kids with meningitis and hasn't had the vaccine, he deserves whatever he gets. my lowly pediatrician wouldn't even let me go away to college without getting the vaccine. I would hope neither he nor the rest of these guys would be that stupid. Anyway, the video of him visiting the hospital is right on the ATP Masters Series TV site, as are pictures of him there, soooo it's not like what he did is hidden. And anyway, if he contracted meningitis, I really don't think he'd be out in almost 90 degree heat practicing for an hour just forgoing serving and forehands

Sorry, it just doesn't meet my common sense test. neither the hospital nor andy (or his fiancee, for that matter) would be that stupid. he's stupid about a lot of stuff, but not that stupid. and a hospital would never ever be stupid enough to set itself up for a lawsuit of that magnitude. They get sued enough for accidents, they'd never put a celebrity around a kid with a highly contagious deadly disease. Really now. as for your original "what do you make of it?" question, I make that the original poster doesn't know much about meningitis or really put much thought into the whole situation

Yeah, the Cincy hospital is going to put highly contagious children near anyone, much less a world class athlete.

This simply cant be !!!

I mean, it would be stupid from the hospital for doesnt take care of that child and put him/her in quarentene or something like that, separated from the other kids or people without vaccines and special protection...
And/or it would be stupid from Andy to do that ! cute but stupid....

Maybe that person got confused and said meningitis instead of meningioma ?
You know, it was actually a cancer hospital, so meningioma fits... :p

Nice report Deb, thanks. :)

Maybe I'm a little slow on the uptake, but what has Spadea done to upset everyone? :haha: I'm aware that some of his book upset a number of his colleagues, and I have to say that he isn't the most "pleasant" character (although not obnoxious) but it isn't uncommon for these "characters" to find others with similar traits.

And Spadea's fashion sense...:worship: At Notts he wore a red and white stripe cap (on sideways for a time) with blue and white stripe tracksuit. :D

Deb based on what you saw, do you think he'll pull out?Well.... it's strange. He was moving ok, etc. In fact I was impressed with how healthy he looked until he started talking to Doug a lot and stopped hitting topspin forehands...then near the end of the practice I was like, wait, he hasn't taken any serves at all  It's weird, because he said in Cincy that what was bad was like on the left side of his neck/upper spine, he said the opposite side from where his shoulder was a problem etc. But then yesterday he does everything except - serve, overheads, and he sliced a lot of forehands b/c he said hitting them hurt, which doesn't seem to make sense with something wrong on the left side. Honestly, I dunno what that would be but he certainly can't win matches without a serve and a normal forehand (even if his forehand is sucktastic right now). So I imagine if he can't hit them by Wednesday, he couldn't well play. According to his site he won't play til Thursday night.

its jamie cerretani a doubles playerHm, okay, thanks, I've never heard of him so at least I don't feel badly about not recognizing him :)

working on the pictures now :)

Thanks for the post and good update on Andy. I noticed he's not moving that arm to far from his side either. I'm betting A-Rod just might be done for the year. I seem to have a similar shoulder issue to what I'v heard he's dealing with and the damn thing just won't go away. I think it's healed then one wrong BH overhead or to far a reach out to the BH side, and it's right back. It is so frustrating it's ridiculous. It's not bad enough for surgery, but it's extremely painful if moved in just the wrong way.

I don't know, it's strange. But if he can't serve and hit forehands, I don't see how he can do very well at this event. Really bizarre. But if he's not being honest about what it is, there's no way for us to really know I guess.

I hope your injury heals asap though!

Well, what's so strange is that he was VERY clear last week in saying this is NOT the shoulder injury, that the shoulder is fine..... but everything he did/didn't do yesterday doesn't make sense with this sore neck unless some kind of pinched nerve is involved. I don't know, it's strange. But if he can't serve and hit forehands, I don't see how he can do very well at this event. Really bizarre. But if he's not being honest about what it is, there's no way for us to really know I guess.

I hope your injury heals asap though!

Thanks, I just know that when people say shoulder, most immediately think of the front of the shoulder. It looks to me like Roddicks is in the back of his shoulder, and does have some nerves involved. According to my ortho, that's what puts pressure on the trap, which in turn tightens up the neck. That's when I noticed the other day that A-Rod had similar limitations in movement that I do. Hopefully his will heal quickly, he's a lot younger than me. Thanks for your kind words..

Deb- did you see any of Fernando's interactions with fans? I have heard several accounts from different tournaments about how Verdasco is one of the nicest guys on tour.Well for a skinny guy, JMDP hits the bejeesus out of the ball  he looked very gangly and skinny and tall in person, more so than i had remembered before. But man, he was crushing it.

As for Verdasco, I've seen him practice before at IW and honestly, never really seen much interaction with fans (I left his first practice before it was over, some guys were waiting for him to sign their tennis stuff, but I don't know what happened).... but in general he seems always to be in a pretty good mood - intense during practices, but smiling and stuff like that, so I can't say for sure based on what I myself have witnessed in terms of actual fan interaction, but he definitely seems like a good-natured guy :yeah: :D

Thanks for your kind words..Well, his shoulder problem that took him out of RG and should've taken him out of Wimbledon was an inflamed rotator cuff. He says that's healed. This one, he said, was on the left side of his neck near the spine but on the left side. I have no idea beyond what he says in press conferences. Maybe your ortho is better than Andy's doctors and they haven't discovered the real problem

They're all cordial to each other and shake hands and say hi when they're coming and going.... except for one poor lonely ignored soul. Poor Vinny Ice (today all decked out in his purple blinged hat with his fro logo ) has no friends - not even his compatriot Isner says hello. Later I heard this guy telling someone on the phone that Spadea's hitting partner didn't show up so he was throwing up balls for himself and hitting shots off them :sobbing:
:haha: Poor Vinnay Ice. He ain't got no friends, no style, no game, no nothing. He is the ultimate loveable loser, I guess. I wonder if he realizes that people are laughing at him when they ask for a photo.

Andy. :worship: It's unreal how popular this frat boy jerk is. I don't get it. :p

Thanks for the report and photos.

Oooooooooookay...... Tuesday report!

Got there a little after 11. Roddick was leaving, I'd be shocked if he had been practicing at 10am, but he was wearing tennis clothes so anything's possible. The one and only Davide Sanguinetti was practicing! Spadea and Grosjean were both warming up for their matches on the stadium, along with Isner. Kind of odd to see Grosjean and Spadea warming up right next to each other. Kind of highlights how tennis is such a strange sport where it's one person against one person yet they still have to see each other so often and stuff. Vinnay's outfit will speak for itself. I was a bit surprised how early Isner was warming up for his match (like 6 hours early?) - most guys seem to warm up about 2 hours before.

Settled in at noon under the shady corner of the stadium for Odesnik/Reynolds, figured it'd be a cracker. And it was. Odesnik came out on FIRE, he was completely controlling play in the first 4 games - Reynolds was scrambling on almost every point to stay in them and somehow broke through and got the break. I have no idea how and these guys behind me were dumbfounded as well. I left late in the first set, but I'm not at all surprised Odesnik came back to win. It was great to see him playing pretty close to the baseline and controlling play. Nice all-court game from both really. :yeah:

I saw Stoppini was killing Kunitsyn.... no idea why, but I heard later that Kunitsyn was really stiff and didn't warm up before his match, maybe he just woke up in a bad mood or something.

Delic and Dusan Vemic were warming up together. They seemed friendly. Around the same time, Del Potro was hitting with Gicquel.

Watched some of Warburg/Vemic. OK. Vemic is nuts  I've never seen anyone scream at himself, throw his racquet, and in general just abuse himself more than this guy. I peeked in during various times and he was always abusing himself some way or another. Anyway, Warburg was the more consistent and certainly the calmer player, and he served for the match in the 2nd and pretty much choked. Vemic won the TB and went on to win. Will be a tough loss for Warburg I think.

I bounced back and forth between that match and Moya and Lopez practicing. The only amusing thing here is that I think Moya and Lopez - who were practicing at the busiest part of the day of course - tried to take a different door out of the fenced practice court - i think they thought if they sneaked out next to the transportation desk that they could avoid the fans? Not sure why they thought that would work, and lo and behold, it didn't  But they did sign, so I'm not sure why they bothered. That also means they got into the car without showering. Yum. Oh. Moya really needs a haircut. The Spadea look on him is unbecoming. REALLY unbecoming. :( Also noticed that Moya was doing a pretty full-on practice session the day of a match, many hours before his match. Interesting to see how different players prepare differently and whatnot. Then Safin came out to warm up a couple hours before his match and generally seemed in a good mood.

Went in to the grandstand to watch the start of the Delic/Sela match. The highlight of the day was surely Sela's superJew fan group. 8 (American) teenage boys had the letters of his name (d u d i s e l a) on their chests, complete with Israeli flags and they were even wearing kippot :sobbing: :haha: When he entered the court they chanted "Shalom Dudi" and other random Jewishnesses - Dudi was amused and seemed rather flattered. They stayed there and cheered hard for their man the whole match  I saw bits and pieces but it was a fun match. Delic was playing solidly - consistency seems to be his problem and he seemed to be serving big and keeping the errors pretty low and coming to net when he had the opportunities. Nice match in terms of sportsmanship too, they shared a very nice handshake and tummy pat at the end.

In between watching that match I peeked in on Safin/Isner. It was basically what I expected. Marat returned well and Isner made a lot of mistakes off the ground. Highlight here is middle of the first set. Marat has just broken and Isner hits a return winners. Marat, of course, doesn't like this, so what does he do? He challenges his own serve  It was on the line so his plan failed, but he gets an A for effort and creativity.

Haas came out to warm up for his match with Falla. Falla's girlfriend was so enthralled by all of this that she sat there doing Sudoku puzzles :rolls: So, there is this strange man who was there on Sunday and who was there again today. He is middle-aged and seems to be an amateur photographer, and what he does is sit at the practice court (which happens to be right where the players all enter from their cars) and takes pictures and asks for autographs. So he gets Falla's autograph when Falla comes out to hit with Haas. He doesn't know who Falla is, so he's asking people around, who happen to be on the phone, who happened to be Noam Okun, who didn't look to pleased that this freaky middle-aged man with a bizarrely large autograph collection was interrupting his phone call to ask who that was. Anyway  I thought Tommy looked really solid and focused in his warmup, just like he looked in his practice on Sunday. Except that I can't figure out who's out there training with him. Is Dean Goldfine not his coach anymore? This guy was definitely coaching Tommy, in English (but with an accent), telling him to attack 2nd serves and stuff. But now that Young has beaten him very easily, I'm pretty shocked considering how good Haas looked especially off the backhand. Very strange.

I watched a little doubles and then made my way out and stumbled upon Verdasco giving an autograph session. This is one top guy. He kept thanking the fans and seemed really genuine with everyone who asked for a pic and kept smiling and saying you're welcome and just in general being really nice. I know, it's a planned autograph session but they do 1-2 a day at the LA tourney and in years past I have seen other players be pretty biatchy in them. So my estimation of Verdasco just keeps growing :yeah:

Also just a general statement that the LA tennis fans seem really knowledgeable. They know who most of the players are and really appreciate good shots/points and good tennis. While Moya and Lopez were practicing, so were a couple doubles players and they were doing practice points and they played this really great scrambling/volleying/etc. point and the people watching even clapped for this in practice. Also, all day long I heard parents (mostly dads) telling their kids all about tennis, the players, the rankings, even shot techniques and stuff like that. It was really nice to see :yeah:

(oh, and someone told me Andy was serving in his practice yesterday. I didn't see it and didn't see him hit today so I cannot verify, but if true that's good news for us fans)

So that was long enough  will post pics when they finish uploading, probably tomorrow :)

BGT - just about everyone. Players in LA and San Jose rarely shower before they get in the car, for whatever reason. The only one that I ever had to roll the window down on was Spadea, and it was only once out of the four or five times I drove him.

Thursday Report

Not much exciting happened today, sorry to say :( So you'll just have to endure more of my lame (and today, tired) rambling and the pics tomorrow...

So I get to the tennis around 10:30am and it's a lot busier just driving around UCLA than on Tuesday. There is a line at the parking garage of a few cars - people are honking (this is LA :p). I finally get to the gate to pay and the lady collecting money starts asking me about the tennis. More specifically she says "So, are the guys hot?" I'm like, lady, there are cars lined up behind me and people are honking, and you're asking me if the tennis players are good-looking (btw she was middle-aged just in general strange:lol: ), and she asks me more than once, to the point where it's really getting creepy and what I wanted to say was "dude, go up and see for yourself" but instead I deflected this line of questioning by asking where i should park today. Anyway. That was rather strange indeed

I want to start by saying that I love children. I think they are wonderful and I want to have some of my own one day. I think they are much smarter than many adults give them credit for and are in general just darn cute. But today was Kids Day at the tournament. Hundreds of young screaming hyper children :sobbing: So, when I got there, there was an event for the kiddies on the grandstand court - Wayne Bryan was hosting it and it involved a lot of kids and t-shirts and Malisse and Justin Gimelstob. Which was all fine, until the event ended, then there was a DELUGE OF CHILDREN  (I found out later that a lot of the kids just came for the morning event and didn't even stay to see any tennis. That made me sad :()

Anyway, I decided I would be "safest" in the stadium, which they opened at 11. So I went in and a bunch of doubles players were practicing (I will ask for identification help when the pics upload tomorrow). At 11:30, Roddick came out, which was pretty surprising since I had never seen him practice in the morning before a night match before. He hit for a half hour and looked pretty good. Where the deep flat forehands are in matches is beyond my comprehension, but they do exist :o I heard he went somewhere else and practiced for another half hour right away.

Found a shady spot up in the corner for the first match and watched all of Del Potro/Stoppini. It was never close. Stoppini managed to hold on throughout most of the first set but at the end finally Del Potro took over. Just as he was in the practice I saw the other day, he was crushing the ball and the only reason he dropped serve early in the 2nd is b/c I think he just got lazy for a few points there, but he immediately righted the ship so good for him. Early in the match he hit a pretty spectacular passing shot slap winner off a smash. it's pointless to try to describe it, but it was really amazing. Just take my word for it ;)

Then I watched the first set of Young/Gicquel. As I said in the match result thread I still cannot wrap my head around how Young could have beaten Tommy so easily the other night. Young is still pretty bad. Maybe he just played the best match of his career the other night, I dunno. He's definitely grown (the stats they showed on the big screen during the warmups says he is 6 feet now), and he was serving in the 120s, but he just makes soooooo many errors. So I left near the end of the first set, confident that the match was not going to change... and it didn't

Watched some doubles, which is always fun. Lopez and Verdasco were warming up for their doubles match while Safin and Kunitsyn played Isner and Cerretani (who really is a pretty good doubles player from very close to where I grew up, so that's cool :yeah: ).... Verdasco's ankle wasn't even taped soooooo I guess that's a good thing and hopefully that means it's not serious. I got one picture of him by accident that is probably one of my favorite pics i've ever taken, I had to wait til i got home to see if it really came out, and it did, yay!

Time for the match I was most waiting for - Moya/Delic. Moya came out pretty flat, but Delic was really on fire. Except for missing a fair number of backhands into the net, Amer was just killing it from all over the court. Aces, volleys, return winners, even a lob or two, he was just in the zone. I figured it'd get harder for him, and thought for sure that when he blew the break in the 2nd set that he'd be a goner, but he hung in pretty well and fought hard. Moya really steadied himself and started making fewer errors and serving a lot better. In the second set tiebreak, Moya hit a really incredible passing shot to get it back on serve and he managed to sneak it out. Unfortunately I left and missed the third set :( But I am very happy for Amer, who was gaining crowd support as the match went on. I think people were really appreciating the game he was playing and that he was fighting so hard. Ironically for me, the first time I saw Amer play was when he played Moya at the USO a few years ago and I instantly became a fan b/c of his game and attitude, so cool :yeah:

During the third set of Delic/Moya, I got some food and watched some practice. Roddick tried to fool everyone by hitting in the Grandstand court instead of the on-site practice court, but you can't fool a bunch of hormonal teenage girls, it's like they could smell and find him :haha: So, he just warmed up for a bit, but the amusing thing was the ensuing hit-and-giggle between John Roddick and Doug Spreen, Andy's trainer. I think poor Dougie is not so good at tennis, so John was playing lefty  I found this all rather amusing, but it's probably just me ;)

Made my way to the stadium to see Courier and Krickstein play their Legends exhibition thingy. Not much to say here since I didn't stay long. One funny part was when Krickstein didn't like a call and Courier was all, so, challenge? Of course, I don't think Krickstein had ever had the opportunity to use Hawk-eye so he was a bit confused, it was amusing but otherwise  I was hoping to see McEnroe hit before leaving, but I got tired and didn't feel like waiting, so I left.

So that's it. boring mostly. Well, good tennis, but it's hard to describe that so yeah :p and thanks again nizelegz for everything

pics coming tomorrow :)
