Good luck to Nole in Beijing! Hope he enjoys the Olympics no matter how he does. :)

Does anyone know when he's going to Beijing? And also, is his coach going with him or is he just using whoever is heading Serbia's tennis team? (I don't know who that is I just realized) Does anyhone know if players can use both?

The draw is 64 I believe. I know the winner gets 400 points, but not sure about the rest. Tennis starts on the 10th, though Nole will get a first round bye. Here's the official website for tennis:

I hope it's helpful since I haven't fully investigated it yet. ;)

Thanks Kalista :hug:I really don't know so much about how the Olympics work either. Guess we can all learn together:) I have my own reservations about them being held in Beijing because of the political situation there, - but - having said that - the athetes are going to go there and be proud to represent their countries -it's not their fault where this particular Olympics is being held - so they need our support :)

Here's the ranking breakdown (I had to go find it because I knew I saw it somewhere and it was driving me nuts because I couldn't remember where!)

Men's ATP ranking points
Gold Medal - 400
Silver Medal - 280
Bronze Medal - 205
Loser 3rd/4th - 155
Quarterfinals - 100
Round of 16 - 50
Round of 32 - 25
1st Round - 5

The one thing that does suck about the Olympics is that players drop the points after a year with no chance to defend them or pick up points to replace them really. But, I guess everyone who participates accepts that.

Oh oh! I do know something else! They put people from the same country in different parts of the draw so it doesn't prevent medals. So I believe the earliest Janko and Novak would be allowed to face each other is the gold medal match

That's right. If there is more than 2 players from the same country, theyre put into different quarters, so a country could have a player in each quarter (like Spain will).

I said before that Nole would have a bye, but I don't see that on the official page. I thought I read that before, but I may have been wrong. The early rounds are best of 3, but the final is best of 5. I have mixed feelings about that. On one hand, it's supposed to show the importance of the event, but on the other, it's probably hard to go from one format all tournie to a different at the end.

That was my impression too, but I don't want to be negative. Who knows? His body language today was strange.

I dunno...it really seems to me as though it's something personal. It seems as though his form went like overnight. It wasn't as though he had a bad day because he had a bad day in Miami and bounced back during clay season. Ever since Queens though, his serve has just gone, his forehand looks like Gulbis' (erratic), his backhand is mehh, and it seems like his mind is cloudy. One of the things I noticed in his match today was that he wasn't 100% sure or committed to what he wanted to do. He second guessed himself on so many points and just from my personal experience, when you start giving off that negative body language it usually has to do with something personal. Novak is mentally strong-I mean he's a freaking top professional tennis player for heaven's sake! It's an individual sport and there is no "team mentality" in tennis-it's your mentality and it's possibly the most important part of your game. When that goes, everything else goes with it. I really don't think that it's a confidence issue because we all know that Nole does not lack confidence in himself. It really seems to me as though it's something personal and right now tennis isn't the focal point of his life. I mean, he even said in that interview that he was "depressed" right now and I read that as a sign of a player who has a lot going on off-court.

I really wish I could just give him a hug  he seems so sad lately.

:hug:I want to give him a hug too:awww:

I honestly think his main problem is just that he's finding it hard to adjust to being such a top player  It's always easier being the "hunter" and going out there as the underdog, than being the "hunted" that everyone else wants to shoot down. Just see how much better he played against Nadal when he was the lower ranked player and not the favourite, than he did against Murray, when he was expected to win. I honestly think he just needs time to adjust to his new position. Sampras won his first Grand Slam in 1990, and then not another won til 1993, - it took him a while to adjust too, and look what he achieved:)

About the personal stuff- well- we all have stuff to deal with at some stage - and I'm sure there are things going on, but Nole will learn to deal with them in his own time like we all do.

I actually think the Oympics will be good for him :) He's already said how much he wants to be in the Village with the whole atmosphere of the other athletes around him. He'll have Janko and Nenad there as well, so it will be more of a "team" spirit, not an individual pressure, and he can relax watching other sports and having a good time with his mates as well as playing :)

I'm sure we will see a new Nole next week:)

Also there is an article in the Viktor thread that need translation but if it says what I hope it says and that Viktor is going to the Olympics, I think that will really help Novak relax. All evidence that I've seen including the cutest little video, and also first hand observation, shows that Novak has a great time when Viktor is around  Having that childhood friend around that you can really let loose around and act crazy with, is kind of what he needs to get rid of some pressure I think :)

Then again, I don't know what the article says yet... but I have hope since I believe Viktor is the first alternate at this point ;)

Morning all - de-glumped now so onwards and upwards.

However, the two Murray defeats have highlighted the fact that when someone manages to stays with Nole with depth and changes of pace he's at a total loss as to what to do. He is easily frustrated and his shots start misfiring alarmingly. Yesterday was clever by Andy and kudos is due there but it was hardly spectacular stuff. Also, Nole couldn't have played a third set and clearly looked like he didn't want to.

These points needs fixing and fast if he is to keep his ranking and go higher.

Would like to endorse the welcome back for Alex - you really have been missed so do come back soon.

Thank you Herdwick. Your observation abut Nole is spot on. Novak needs to be more aggressive with Murray. The problem is Nole made too many UE yesterday. I'm concerned about his body language. My impression was that he didn't really care if he is going to win or lose. Sure, it was hot and humid, maybe he was tired but still... I'll support Novak no matter what, I just hope to see him playing his best tennis again. We all know what he is capable of. Somehow, I believe that he'll come back stronger than ever

This is from Tennis.com's the Ticker:

Sam Stosur on the conditions at Beijing: "It's very hot, very humid and the sun's not even out yet so it can only get worse from here... It's unpredictable and probably the hottest conditions we are going to play in all year."

This is the first player in Beijing I've heard talk about the conditions. Nole looked pretty spend playing in the heat of Cinci. Though, he did make the final. :)

Hi all :wavey:

I don't mean to be the wet blanket here but I personally am not feeling so great about Novak playing in the Olympics this year. I know he's a patriotic guy but I really feel that Beijing's notoriously bad smog would only serve to harm Novak, who has enough health and breathing problems as it is. Seriously, he should wear a mask if he's going to be running around breathing in that poison air. Not only that but I wouldn't dare eat any of the food over there. Not unless he wants to get food poisoning or to test positive for steroids.

Bleh. I'm really down on the Olympics this year, just can't get excited about it. Not only that but tennis has had so many B-squad medalists over the years that I find it hard to believe that anybody ranked in the top ten will actually medal this year. But if they do, more power to them.

Novak winning a medal would be great but I'd rather see him win the USO, and he's not going to do that if he goes deep at the Olympics. JMO. I hope I'm not out of line saying so.

I kind of agree with you in that this year's Olympics has a weird feel even before it has started. You read about how some countries are providing their athletes with breathing masks and about how the media may be censored and it feels odd to be talking about the Olympics. The food thing especially is weird. The fact that China has to go to so much trouble to ensure that eating the food in the village won't result in athletes testing positive for doping is bizarre to me. I kinda wish the Olympic committee would have waited to give China a later Olympics. But, I'm trying to keep an open mind until the games actually begin. It just kind of makes me a little sad that there is already so much controversy surrounding the Olympics.

*Ljubica*
08-05-2008, 11:01 AM
I do see exactly what you mean tangerine_dream, and Kalista. There are far too many negative things hanging around this Olympics (none of them really conected to sport), and it is sad. As i said earlier, I have really strong reservations about China having these Games because of the political situation there (censorship of Internet and media, human rights etc)............ But- having said that - the athletes still want to be there and want to represent their countries. Nole is really looking forward to the whole experience, and as we discussed yesterday, I'm sure it will do him good to be in that team environment, with good friends like Janko, Nenad (and Viktor ;) )- so best we just cheer for him and hope for the best :)

It is hard to compare modern industrialized nations with developing ones. Besides just merely commenting on the fact that China is communist, let's not forget that it is still a third world country. The summer olympics have not been held in a developing country since the Mexico City games in 1968. (South Korea already by 1988 had living standards comaparable to the first world) China's problems are problems of a country that is rapidly industrializing and changing. Does China's environmental policies need to change? Yes. But let's not forget our own history lessons about how awful the pollution was in Britain and America during our own industrial periods. China does not have an equivalent to an FDA to ensure food quality, just as the United States did not start enforcing food production until the progressive era.

Beijing is not an ideal place to be holding athletics events, but the hope is that the Chinese's desire to have a successful games will force them to examine and change. China is playing catch up to the developed world. It starts with small things, like the attempt to curb locals' habit of spitting in public.

Anyway personally for me, I would rather Nole dig deep for USO than the Olympics. I don't have anything against this year's Olympics but all the controversy surrounding it has really killed the spirit of the Games for me. That said though, I think it's every athlete's dream to win a gold medal at the Olympics so meh I dunno

I'm surprised by how late he's getting there. That's not much time to get used to conditions. Nadal and Fed were both there at the beginning of the week. A lot of players, men and women, I've read about who are there are talking about how difficult it is to adjust, for no other reason than jetlag.

I'm surprised by how late he's getting there. That's not much time to get used to conditions. Nadal and Fed were both there at the beginning of the week. A lot of players, men and women, I've read about who are there are talking about how difficult it is to adjust, for no other reason than jetlag.

Yes - I was surprised too  But I guess he must have his reasons - maybe personal - just needed to go home for a while. I'm sure someone wrote here that he would have a Bye in the 1st round though, so won't play til Tuesday at the earliest as far as I heard (maybe wrong there  ) so that should be enough time.

I was the one who posted earlier about him having a bye, but I'm not sure about that now. I thought I read that a while ago, but didn't see it on the official tennis page when the format was discussed But, we'll know soon enough, like 10 hours or so depending upon how long it takes to publish the draw.

The schedule has 1R Sun and Mon, 2R Tues, and then each subsequent round the following day with SFs Fri. The Bronze metal match is Sat and the final Sun.

Ah - OK - so I can blame you if I got it wong :o  No - seriously - I have really no idea either, and though I've read all the links too, they don't exactly make it very clear. As you say - draw will be out tomorrow, so by the time I wake up tomorrow moring, it should all be clear :)

But I need a source.

The poster marc23 posted it on GM this afternoon(the Nole Motivation thread I think), and Misha kind of backed it up.

Must admit I had heard rumours before now - mainly because of Alex having family in Serbia etc, and other friends I have there - but I never said anything here, because no one really knows if the tabloid press is telling the truth or not  - so I thought it was best not to spread gossip with no official source, because that kind of thing would be so hurtful to the family if it turned out not to be true  Now it's been said elsewhere though, I personally have to say I believe it's true though and it would explain a lot. Hopefully they will work something out though - lots of couples/families have problems, but come out of them stronger and better for it :)

Yes he does  But - like I said - it wouldn't be the first time that a couple had problems and came through them stronger than before,- so I hope this will be the case - however true the "rumours" actually are. From what I heard they're not actually separating at this stage anyway - he had an affair, but she doesn't want to split, she wants to work through it and stay together - and they're trying to find a way

The draw is out. http://www.itftennis.com/shared/medialibrary/pdf/original/IO_35058_original.PDF

Nole is in Nadal's half. His 1R opponent is Robby Ginepri. Murray is in Nadal's quarter, which is good. But, for some reason I have bad feeling about Ginepri. The rest of the quarter isn't too bad, with Nalbandian being the second highest seed in the quarter. Hope he does well! :)

I forgot about him playing doubles. He and Zimonjic are actually the 2nd seeds and will take on Damm and Vizner of Czech Rep. I kinda feel bad for Nenad since he's so good at doubles and doesn't have a partner to match. I think Damm and Vizner are a tough 1R opponent too. I hope they do well.

Also - video and interview (in Serbian) of him arriving in Beijing :)
http://greattennisphotos.blogspot.com/2008/08/novak-djokovic-arrived-to-beijing.html

"I'm excited and I can't wait to go out on the court. I represent my country on one of the most important competition. It's a great honor and pleasure to be here, and of course I'll try to win one of the medals."

"Nenad has been here for three days already, same as Janko (Tipsarevic). Unfortunately I couldn't come earlier because of lot of responsibilities on other tournaments, but I will try to practice with Nenad so we could be ready for the beginning of the tournament."

"I'm full of positive energy because I will stay in Olympic Village and will live among other great sportsmen from all over the world. Everything else will be easy."

I don't know exactly how they do doubles seeding, but I think they combine the doubles points of both players. Nole must have had enough points to not drag Nenad down too much. :) Look at Nestor. He and his partner aren't even seeded even though Nestor is the #1 doubles player in the world.

So why are Bryans first seed? Like in Toronto. Nestor/Zimonjic are 1st almost a month.

The doubles rankings are based on both players. Nola and Nenad are seeded only because Nole's singles ranking is high enough. And only because the new system counts the single ranking.

I understand that *and forget who play with who*, but why in Toronto Bryans were 1st?

Just like the ranking system in singles. The combined ranking points of Nenad and Nestor are less than the Bryans. I think they just passed them this week.

Oh that one. Thanks, I enjoyed posting it.

So no photos or glimpses of Novak at Olympics ceremonies yet? I was watching a livestream and they showed some good close ups of Rafa, Roger, AndyM, and the Williams sisters. They all look like they're having a blast.

Maybe the Serbian websites will have photos of Novak available soon.

As far as we know, all Europe (including Serbia) had the same TV pictures - so all we got was one shot of Nole  Very spectacular ceremony - but - would have been better with more of him and less of everyone else :)

Well, this is from July 24th and some of you may have already read it. But here it goes:

Beijing 2008 Olympic spotlight on...Novak Djokovic

Beijing 2008 Olympic spotlight on...Novak Djokovic

Q: What are your early memories of the Olympic Games?

ND: I always dreamed of playing in the Olympic Games. In the first place, because the Games has the biggest tradition in sports and it's an event which unites all the professional athletes all around the world. It's very special. I remember as a kid I followed every single Olympics and I always liked to see the opening ceremony which had special memories for me as a person. Looking at this year's Olympics, I'm really looking forward to play and participate in such a great event.

Q: After what Serbia has been through over the last couple of decades, is the Olympics important in uniting the country?

ND: Yes, it certainly is. I'm always trying to look at the brighter side of life. We have had a lot of difficulties over the last 25 years. Our success is something that sends a much better picture and brighter picture to the world, and the Olympics is a very special competition for all of us.

Q: When you watch the Olympics, is it the opening ceremony that you look out for the most?

ND: I think so, yes. There are some talks about me holding the flag in the opening ceremony, so if I'm able to do it, I'll be more than happy and pleased. Of course, the opening ceremony at the Olympics is the most watched opening ceremony in all sports in the world.

Q: Away from tennis, what sport do you want to watch the most in Beijing?

ND: I think athletics is the sport that most characterises the Olympic Games. Athletics has the biggest history in the Olympics, and this is something that I really want to watch. And plus, of course, basketball, which brought a lot of Olympic medals to our country. I'll be more than happy to see lots of sports.

Q: Will you be staying in the village?

ND: Yes, what I'm looking forward to most is the village. So many athletes, the best professional athletes in all the sports. Everybody can have lunch together and meet each other, so I think this is the best experience.

Q: If there was another sport you could choose to compete in at the Olympics, which would it be?

ND: Well, I think after tennis my favorite sport is skiing, but, of course, this is a Winter Olympics sport. But in Beijing, I'm not sure. Maybe a 100-metre sprinter.

Q: Serbia looks like it will have quite a few opportunities for a medal, both in the men's and the women's events. What would that mean to you?

ND: Well, we don't have so many candidates for medals. In the last Olympics, we had only I think one or two medals, which was not so encouraging for sport in our country. But I think this year is quite different. We have tennis, and I think we all have quite good chances to win the medals, so it's good for us.

I just watched the opening ceremony here in the US. I saw Nole! On NBC, he and Ivanovic were both named as international stars of Serbia and the camera spent most of the time it was on Serbia (which wasn't long) alternating between him and Ana. My sentiment exactly. I saw lots of my favourite players there! :woohoo:

NBC just showed Novak and Ana during the OC and the commentators talked a bit about Serbia being a new tennis power. :yippee: Novak looked great, he was smiling and had his arms up, screaming and hollering. Did anybody record it? I didn't get it in time.

Am glad Nole is playing the evening session. Hopefully will be a little cooler, and 5AM (EST) is alot more makeable than middle of the night

I dont' see Nenad/Nole scheduled to play doubles. Have they been pushed to Tuesday?

I assume so  They can't make Nole play a doubles' match BEFORE an important singles' match, and his singles is scheduled late - so I guess they'll play on Tuesday now.

Hi Jelena :wavey: See you got up early too :) Glad you liked the clip :) Any idea where we can follow the doubles online? I'm assuming you'll be able to watch it in Serbia, but all I have is Centre Court

And I am a little pessimistic too

How did the volleyball go?

Hi Rose :wavey:
No idea...I'm not sure if we're gonna see the doubles either...I hope we will.
If I find out, I'll let you know.
Volleyball wasn't good, our boys lost to Russia 1:3, but it's only the beginning of the tournament, they have chance to go to the QF if they play better later... (they lost 2 first matches in Sydney 2000, and later won Olympic gold! :) You never know ;) )
Waterpolo was better :) We beat Germany 11:7
And evening was interesting, our basketball players U20 defended last year's gold medal at European Championship :aparty:

BBC weather forecast says heavy rain til Thurday:help: Hope they're wrong.

Oh, no!!!! :help:

I read that she had a problem with her hand. Here is the story from the Olympic site - such a sad photo of poor Ana :sobbing:

She really looks sad on that pic :awww:

Hi Jelena :wavey: Sorry about the Volleyball - hope they can do better later :) Good about the water polo and U20's :)

I am going to bed now so I can get up early and try to follow Dima and Janko's matches - if the :rain: ever stops

So goodnight and speak tomorrow I'm sure

 Can I just say I'm really scared for Nole right now  I'm just watching Andy Murray on TV - they say it's 98% humidity in Beijing, and Andy looks exhausted, bathed in sweat and can't seem to breathe too well  Good luck Nole - you're going to need it

Good luck!!!

And if you want just live scores, you can try http://livescore.com/tennis.dll?page=home It's not point-by-point, but they update at the end of every game.

I'm watching Andy on TV here in the UK - he's a break down in the second set now  But Novak is also about to start - ajde.

Jelena - hope you can see the match on Channel Surfing - it's working fine for me so far :)

Thanks also shuhrat:)

Enjoy :) I just can't believe how few people there are at these tennis matches  When we have them at Wimbledon in 2012, I'm sure every court will be packed, just like Wimbledon itself is.

Ajde Nole  What is that serve doing again? I have a bad feeling about this already  And what's with the beard thing  Please shave :spit:

Maybe because tehre's also the match against Murray with a guy form Chinese Taipei so, maybe when that match is finished there'll be more people?

I like the beard thing :awww:

Btw, I love that song they played during the break :p

There's no one at the Murray match either  I've still got it on TV. The commentators are saying how badly all the tennis events are attended - even the ones with Chinese players. Sad really. As for the beard - I just hate beards - on anyone  Always have. Sorry Nole :awww:

Maybe when we get to the latter stages of the competition they will come, I don't know.

I don't nescesarily like beards, but I like it on him.

Too bad he couldn't make that breakpoint. But his previous service game was good so, that gives some hope.

This one is not so good though  And my bloody livestream keeps on stalling and buffering :spit:

Have to say - totally random - I really like Robbie's sleeveless shirt in the US colours. It's very smart and suits him.

Was Janko wearing a bright orange jacket? Not sure I was a fan of that one. :help:

Yes - they seemed to have quite a big gap on Centre Court between the day and evening sessions, so nothing between the end of Dima/Fed and the beginning of Venus Williams' match. I was  in case it started raining again, but I guess at least it's cooler now for Nole :).

And - YAY :bounce: Now Andy's match is over I have Nole on my TV :woohoo: No more buffering livestream :woohoo: And close-ups of my lovely Miljan (Nole's Fitness Trainer) in the audence. Yes - I know - I'm shallow :o
