Djokovic vs Federer : Who is a better player these days?

Its Djokovic vs Federer. Who is a better player these days and why? Discuss? What can Fed do to reverse his losses to mugs on the hard courts in order to deal with the likes of Djokovic, Murray, and Nadal on hard courts?

Djokovic is probably going to take the title tomorrow in Cincy if he plays like he did today. He is 3-1 so far this year in the finals and 10-4 in his career. Not too shabby when it comes to performing at the big dance.

The tour is on hard courts until the next Monte Carlo. Does Djokovic have the upper hand on Federer for now. He also has derailed Nadal for the 4th time in 6 tries on hard courts as you saw today.

Fed, for his part, has no less than 7 slams on hard courts. Is he losing his grip on hard courts too? We all know that clay and grass has been taken away from him. All indications suggest that its only a matter of time before he drops to #3 behind Djokovic.

Can Fed slow down Djokovic?

I don't think it's fair to compare them today, just a day after one of the best matches Novak has played this year. Prior to last night, they were probably on the same page and I imagine, even with Novak's amazing form last night, they are still about even with a slight edge to Roger. He will stay ahead of Novak, he is more mentally tough.

Fish, Karlovic, Sexy and Simon are better than Federer these days. The answer is quite obvious: Djokovic.

Djok better in HC season, but Federer better on Grass

This year? Djokovic, no question. Federer hasn't won anything. You could argue that he has been more consistent, but Djokovic has been winning big titles. No contest. Personally, I'm rooting for Nole to get to number 2 by year's end.

Great point and what I really like about it is you are apparently are a Nole fan and look at this objectively. "Last night" Djok was clearly the #1 player in the world ho HCs. But, will it last, we'll find out probably today. In the last 8 weeks he has not looked that good, and pulled it together in the last 2-3 matches.
Federer by his standards has not looked that good all year, but has been there at the end in all 3 slams. Obviously if Djok keeps playing like he did last night, he's clearly better than Federer on HCs, AND everyone else for that matter.

Seconded.
Just to add to the objectivity: yes, Djoko played a very good match yesterday. But I think it should also be noted that Rafa wasn't at all at his best. So, as usual, the outcome of the match is due to the combination of how BOTH players were playing.

To answer the question: impossible to say as of yet. Both haven't been at their best lately (to say the least), and concluding that Djoko is the better player of the two based on the results at ONE tournament only, which isn't even over yet... nah.

If Federer plays Djokovic in US Open, he will win.

Djokovic has won important titles, while Roger has been more consistent.

I'd take Djokovic, this year.

What are we compareing. Both palyers playing there best on hard court Federer will always win. If we are comparing this year then they are aboyt equal

I disagree Im no Novak fan but I do think on a fast hard court Novak will beat Nadal 9 times out o 10. He is a better player than Nadal on that surface. Just like Nadal is a better player than him on clay. Nadal played well yesterday

some posters here do have a point. if we go by the big titles, Djokovic has the upper hand.

he has the hard court slam in his pocket. he also has Indian Wells and Rome titles. i dont see Murray stopping him today.

i would love to see them play a 5 setter at the U.S. Open.

Nole seems to be playing better and better as the hard court part of the season progresses. He was very impressive last night.

I dont think Novak is mentaly ready to go 5 sets with Federer. He could balst him off the court in 3 but a long 5 set match like wimbledon I will pick Federer each and every time.

But saying that I think Novak in the next few years will become the most domainat player in tennis. I have watched all his matches with Nadal this year and I think he has the measure of Nadal on all surfaces he is just not mentaly strong or phyical strong to compete with on clay yet. But give him a couple of years and I think Nadal will lose to him nearly every time they play.

A bit like Federer and Hewitt

Old man, washed up Federer will never beat Djokovic again. That single hander will just never hold up to the Serb's deadly finishing power from both wings.

now you are talking. that single hander is also useless with respect to a return of serve as well.

Yes, there is definitely a danger of this hard court rivalry turning into Federer and Hewitt or Sampras and Chang! Except it's going to be even worse on hard courts since novak will be ahead from the beginning. It's all too easy for novak to keep his balance and just rip into any nadal shot that sits up.

Every point that nadal wins is a gruelling rally. Djokovic wins some gruelling rallies, punishes forehands and gets some cheap points on serves. Djokovic was even returning the body serve that was getting a ton of points for nadal on grass. The only chance for nadal imo is to go big on the serve (not like in the first set) and wear djokovic out in the rallies. The one nice thing for me while watching these two go head to head is that it's a relaxing match!, I am just happy as long as nadal doesn't get destroyed. :)

It's amazing but Djokovic has the complete backcourt game and seems to be able to bring his A game out almost every single time. Impressive that he has been able to do this since he was 20. I thought Fed. was ahead slightly before this recent stretch, but Novak is in the lead now imo. He is actually far more efficient at ending points on hard courts now than Fed.

Muzza.

thats 2 wins in a row for Murray over the hot shot hard court artist Djokovic. very impressive.

looks like Murray belongs at the very top as well as far as fast hard courts are concerned. he is healthy for a change and he is doing some damage out there.

keep in mind that Murray has 2 wins over Fed as well on fast hard courts.

Djokovic is having a better year as far as results go, but isn't it a little premature to completely toss Fed under a bus?

It's not the first time we've seen a #1 struggle, only to get back to business later on.

so in other words, you do not wish to place too much confidence in either one of them for now.
