Since the reign is now officially over, i wonder how everyone here thinks about the title's subject:

Which was the best tournament for Federer between TMC 2003 and Wimbledon 2008 ?

The best GS and the best AMS and his best TMC, if possible...

Me, i watched him very closely live (almost every match showed on TV) since AO 2005 (Safin SF)...and i've seen his before 2005 best matches recorded, thanks to file-sharing communities...

IMHO, best GS was AO '07, best TMC was 2006, as for the best AMS, I'd say Madrid 2006....

The Australian Open back in 2007. Although Roddick was a good matchup for Federer in the SF and played right into his hands, it was still probably one of the single greatest performances I've seen from an individual at that stage of a tournament imo :)

I think you have to go with the 2004 or the 2005 U.S Open. Honorable mention 2006 Wimbledon. Which slam he won without losing a set? 2007 AO? Then that's on the list too. ;)

AMS

Too many to remember lol I'll choose Hamburg 2002 because it was his first big title, it was on clay and he played an amazing match against Safin in the final.

GS

Wimbledon 2003: A dream. Especially the victory against Roddick in semi-final, one of the best match of his career, plus at that time Roddick was the favorite, he just won the Queens. It was also like a dream because almost nobody was giving him a chance to win the tournament or a GS one day. He was still a headcase and just did lose against Horna in the first round of RG.

AUS Open 2004: When I saw the draw, I was like "ok he CAN'T win this tournament, just impossible". He had Hewitt (1/8), Nalbandian(1/4) and Ferrero (1/2) in his draw... in that time Hewitt was still his biggest Nemesis and so was Nalbandian. I'll remember the victory against Hewitt forever because it was just few months after the Davis Cup heartbreaking loss on the same court. It was the Australian Day, the night session and during the match you could hear some fireworks. Federer won in fourth sets, it was only his third win in five years against Hewitt and the first in a GS. The final was against Safin, he won and became number one for the first time right after the tournament.

US Open 2004: I choose this Slam because I'll always remember the five sets victory IN A TERRIBLE WIND against Agassi in quarters. Agassi at home, the worst conditions possible for Fed (he hated playing in the wind), in the other hand Agassi was known for being the best for playing in windy conditions. During that match Federer showed an AMAZING mental strenght and he won. He was definitely NOT a mug and a pussy at that time (wonder what happened since...). The final against Hewitt was an Hard Court tennis demonstration. Remember the beating Fed took at RG this year ? It was nearly the same but on HC. Hewitt won just 6 games. Fed clinched his first title in New York and became the first player since Sampras to have won at Wimbledon and the US Open the same year.

TMC

I'll choose the TMC 2003 in Houston. His first victory in this competition and the confirmation that he would become a great player. He played against Agassi, Nalbandian whom he's never beaten. He did beat Nalbandian in the Round Robin and Agassi twice. The first time against Agassi was for his opening RR match. Night session, great ambiance, two tie-break, very tight match, he won 7-6 in the third. He played Agassi in the final too. This time it was a demonstration. 6-3 6-0 6-4. Agassi had absolutely no answer. During the tounament he has beaten also Ferrero in RR and Roddick in the semi. All of his match were absolutely fantastic.

Sad thing is some people actually think he's a good poster..

Because he knows more in his little finger about tennis than fanboys/fangirls do in their bodies.

Perfect post from Sebby :
Houston 03 has to be the best memory for Fed's true fans because from his win against Agassi in Round Robin he became a godlike player and went on his first roll against all his previous nemesises both there and later during AO 04.

So those 2 tournaments have to be his two best because after AO 04 it became much much predictable stuff and as a Fed huge fan less enjoyable because surprise effect disappeared.

Wimbledon 03 was great but when Fed beat Lopez in round 16 and with Agassi losing at the same stage he was a huge favorite for me to win against his bitch Schalken and then I never understood why Roddick was the favourite for everybody because I was sure Fed would thrash the guy who was his bitch at that time too and then Philippoussis couldn't be a threat in a GS final even if it was uncharted territory for Fed at this stage of his career.

Roddick finishing 03 number 1 was a joke when he was trounced by fed at Houston in the semis and of course his win against Lleyton at AO 04 was huge he was led a set and breakpoint down and became godlike after (and long time Fed fans remember how Hewitt was scary for their boy until that particular moment, even worst than Nadal nowadays...).

His second set tiebreak against Safin at Houston 04 was also great 20/18 if I'm correct with almost only winners from both.

I miss the JesusFed from end of 03 and 04 for me he lost some brilliance from 05 and now it has vanished.

AO 2007 he was truly unstoppable all tournament....WoW
USO 2004 final was some of the best tennis i have even seen. Hewitt was a very decent player back then and he made him look like a junior.

The 2004 Masters Cup was some of the best tennis I've ever seen from most of those involved, ie, the final four. That was just a fantastic tournament, and yes, it was one of Federer's finest performances too.

For obvious reasons, the Masters Cup tends to bring out the best in the players, and I think the 03 and 06 Cups were also some of Federer's better wins.

federer has showed how mentally strong he is in many of the tournaments that posters have listed here. Most notable 2003 tmc and ao 2004. wimbledon 2004, wimbledon 2007 etc etc.

ppl make a big deal about nadal clearing out tsonga and blake in some small tournaments but those wins dont compare with the amount of "balls" federer had to show in order to beat all his former nemesis.... sometimes in a row :scared:. Many of those players on paper are still today a tough matchup for federe on paper and in the biggest GS matches, federer came out and showed what a champion he is.

Also these guys...nalbandian, ferrero, hewitt, agassi are GS winners. They were playing reasonable well at the time.

Wimbledon 2003 when he was hitting winners left and right against Roddick and Philippoussis and also at Us Open 2004 when he was unplayable in the final against Hewitt.

Well this statement is inacurate because Federer will still be number 1 going into Beijing Olympics and you know what I would be will to saying as possibly his last tournament as world number 1 and against the likes of Djokovic and Nadal who have both beaten him this year in straight sets. If Federer can pull out a victory at the Olympics and become a gold medalist I would say that would be his single greatest tournament win ever. (just because it will be so tough if he does win)
