Great match, very enjoyable to watch :)

We all knew Nico had very little chances to pull an upset today, but he gave a lesson on how to stay in the match and gave Rafa a hard time. Lapentti couldn't convert one of those break points in the first set and he should have won that point in the net at the TB.

Great tactical discipline by Nico and many beautiful shots at the net :worship:

But Nadal is too good at this moment, he also did some wonderful shots in the second set. Very deserved #1 spot, I'm glad I recorded this match between my favourite player and the new best player of the world. :)

Lapentti had his chances in the first set and he played a lot better than a breadstick in the second set. Too bad he couldn't play better in the big moments. Anyways, good the see the resurgence of the over 30 year olds

Congratz Rafa

Impressive performance from Lapentti. He exceeded expectations by a large margin executing a good gameplan and keeping consistent depth and accuracy on his shots and showing some good net play.

Then Nadal stepped it up in the last few games of the match and played some amazing passing shots.

Well done to Nadal for finally grabbing the #1 position.

Much, much better match than I expected. Lapentti showed some awesome tennis during that first set (and yes, what a looker that fellow is... wow man, nearly 32 years of age! Must give Fed some hope, apparently he still has some five years to go...) but after losing the TB, it was obvious which way this match would go.

Rafa didn't play his best, but seriously upped his level during that second set. Some awesome shotmaking there from him. The result? A Breadstick. Yeah, that's how fast it goes when Raf finds his move like he wants to.

Congrats to Rafa for the victory (:hatoff:) and to Nícolas for an awesome run and at least giving us an entertaining match during that first set.

And... do I need to say it again? Lapentti is a LOOKER. :hearts: :p

Congrats #1

he is definitely the new #1 now. its a shame that he has to work so damn hard to win his matches.

he just doesnt have the time he needs to take a full cut on those returns on fast hard courts.

he would be almost untouchable if he had a strong return of serve and a bigger serve.

I hope it's not just Schuettlerian syndrome, it'd be awesome to have him back in the mix cuz he's a freakin gamer. Lapentti has played great, especially in the 1st set, with that performance he would have won that set against anybody else with ease, but it hasn't been enough with Rafa in the other side of the net.
In the TB Rafa has just started with the mental dominance, and in the 2nd has stepped up his game a little bit, and then the match was done.

Anyway, congrats to Lapentti for his performance and congrats for the very well deserved #1 to the Spartan, today more Spartan than ever.

PS: he looks exhausted the whole tournament.

Will Nadull get the night match tomorrow too?

Wonder why he gets all his matches at night instead of having to deal with the extreme afternoon heat like every other player.

He arrived to Cincy at Monday night, and then he has been playing at night since Wednesday. I assume you know that the players need some rest, don't you? He could play tomorrow at 08.00 AM, it's a good idea.

Congrats to Rafa! :D Number one, even if it just for a brief while, means a lot. I have the feeling that there is going to be some shuffling for a while- Roger will take it back, Nole will grab the spot, etc. I think the ranking will be traded for a bit but that could be a lot of fun.

Rafa turned it up toward the end, and I was happy to see that. Those passing shots at the end. :hearts:

Nico played so well in the first set he made Rafa earn his victory. Rafa had to play unbelievably well in the 2nd to clinch the 2 breaks. As an old fan of Nico, I am so happy he made Rafa plays his utter best to win. Great to see Nico back and play at the highest level.
As for Rafa, what can I say except I am so proud to be the fan of such an outstanding player. I have never enjoyed tennis as much, in all the 40 years that I watched and followed the game as much as I do watching Rafa play. He brings me unbelievable joy by his presence. Congratulations to Rafa and his fans for being number one. Rafa is the best, vamos Rafa!

I was surprised by Nico's level of play since he was away from the game for a while, and Nadal didn't really play his best tennis. Still, I was glad that Nadal pushed through and can claim the #1 ranking by him winning the match.

I know, I'm just surprised that so many are falling head over heels for him. He's not ugly by any means, but IMO nothing so spectacular as to warrant such extreme reactions. I've seen plenty of South Americans around here who look like that.

Anyway, about Federer: I've heard many others say he is a hottie. I think it's a completely different case and it has to do with the fact he has been so dominant. His position of power, prestige etc leads to admiration which translates to attraction. I think if he were a regular top 30 player nobody would pay any attention to his looks.

I feel EXACTLY the same way. Nico is not fugly for sure but does nothing for me. I'm a HUGE Nadal fan but he does nothing for me in that department too. Calleri, *swoon*, now that's me HOTTIE  It all boils down to different tastes I suppose.

as for Federer, yes, POWER and PRESTIGE can have their aphrodisiac effects...

Well. As a Federer fan I got to congratulate Rafa. I thought was very good last year but this year he just is in another level. It's true that if Federer had done better on his type of courts (hardcourts), Nadal wouldn't have been No. 1 this early but surprisingly Nadal has been the better hardcourt, grass, and clay player. I think if he beats Djokovic tomorrow, U.S. Open will be a virtual lock as I can't see him losing to anyone. I think the most interesting battle is the battle for the No. 2 position. If Federer loses in the 3rd round and Djokovic reaches the final again, we can have a frantic finish to the year. Actually, if Djoko wins this tournament and Olymics and the U.S. Open, he is clearly the No. 2 player in the world. I wonder how Roger would react to being No. 3.

Nah, not for me. Prestige, dominance, cash, etc....? Not interested. I fully second Catharina Cavallieri in Amadeus: "Only TALENT interests a woman with taste..." :p

Saw the guy - Roger, I mean - playing back in 2002, and completely fell for him, right there. A hottie, indeed, graced by the gods with the most beautiful combination of broad shoulders & slender hips I have ever witnessed in my entire life. Have to admit, I do have a soft spot for Clumsy Hairy Dorks, ask my BF about that. ;) He doesn't understand it either...

As I said... different tastes for different people, and quite fortunately so, otherwise everyone would be chasing the same fellow. Not nice for the girls, not nice for the fellow either, unless his first name happens to be Marat. :p

And right now, I'm off, before I make even more of a fool of myself than I already managed to do, thankyouverymuchallandgoodnight. :p

Vamos!!!!!! Finally, Rafa has taken the top spot...and look what it took to reach it: a "Federesque" level of play.

Nico outplayed Rafa in the first up to the tiebreak, and still made Rafa bring his "A" game in the second.

Fans in Cincinnati: pathetic and lukewarm response to Rafa's achievement. Typical USTA, country-club crowd...who prefer Roger because Rafa doesn't fit their standard of "elegance"

And Rafa's post-match comments: focusing on the tourney and not worrying about the ranking: this is THE primary reason he is where he is...unlike some players who blather on and on about "being #1". If you win, the ranking will come...plain and simple. If you don't, its all talk.

Congrats to Rafa and his fans :)

Somehow it would have been strange when a player with Rafa's results wouldn't have been #1. Now he can't put the pressure on Roger anymore and has to lead the field himself. It will be interesting to see how he deals with the situation, but I guess he will be very realistically about his achievement and the waiting challenges.

What's almost as amazing to me: that in order to be #1, Rafa, unlike other #1's in the past, had to win EVERYTHING from Hamburg on...and Roger had to lose early in the two Masters series events...not quite like Moya, Rios, or Kafelnikov (who lost seven first round matches in a row and THEN became #1)...

Kafelnikov's Strange Rise to #1

Dateline: 05/08/99

Yevgeny Kafelnikov became on Monday the first Russian ever to reach the world's number one tennis ranking. Despite a congratulatory telegram from Russian president Boris Yeltsin, Kafelnikov's satisfaction must be somewhat dampened by having reached his long-held goal during a major slump. He has, in fact, lost his last seven matches.

Kafelnikov displaced Pete Sampras as number one not by capturing ranking points to rise above Sampras, but by standing in place while the injured Sampras dropped below him. Sampras declined to defend his title in Atlanta last week, thus losing the 172 points that title was worth and dropping below Kafelnikov by 15 points. The strength of Kafelnikov's play very early in the year, including his Australian Open title, gave him the ranking points that have sustained him thus far, and he won't have to defend those points until early in 2000.
