OMG. I gave you the benefit of the doubt for such a very long time...

How mistaken you are, as anyone with a working set of brains can see. Roger, and nobody else, was the one that reinspired my love for tennis somewhere around 2002 - late, maybe... - and yes, I am guilty of being appreciative of yet another nice young bloke that indeed seems to be capable of playing the game very, very well!

I defended you for a long, LONG time, but now, all I have to say is: PISS OFF, YOU TERRIBLE BANDWAGONNER! :(

Just acknowledge that you aren't a tennis fan, but rather more, a bandwagonner. That would help quite a bit I think. You praise Roger when he wins, you bash him when he loses, without any hint of compassion. And now you post that you hate Rafa? What the **** has he done to earn THAT? :retard:

Oh dear oh dear. Nasty 'Nadull' took away Roger's 6th Wimbly title. For what? For being THE BETTER PLAYER in that particular match??? :help:

Why not become a Djoko fan, then? Or Murray's, whatever? All you care about it whether your fav player wins... you apparently seem to quit your allegiance as soon as said player falls down. Be proud of yourself, there. NOT. :(

Ah. June 2005. Well, you seem to have missed ALL of his struggles before that, and sad to tell you so, but there were plenty of those.

You seem to like to worship a 'robot'. Well, apparently, Roger isn't a robot, he's a mere human being, just as your so much despised 'Nadull'.

Grow up, get a life, and maybe, someday, you'll learn to appreciate people that not only appreciate their fellows when they are winning, but when they are down-and-out just as much. I'm done with you right now.

Roger has already publicly put pressure on himself by stating that the only way he can feel good about this year is if he wins Olympics and the USO. Can't be more "pression" than that.

Other than working hard during the off-season to adjust his game and fitness, I would like him to adjust his sound bites to the media. I wish he would develop complete disdain for the media and emulate Nalbandian in interviews.

All real (how real is Fed now?) contenders for an Olympic gold have "pression". As far as I know, sports shrinks always recommend to stay away from the flagholder duties and even from an Olympic openning ceremony. Personally, I agree with Safin who says that Olympics mean nothing in tennis. So, if by chance, Fed shares Safin's POV (but afraid to admit it publically), then it might be just fun for him.

Keep answers to strictly monosyllabic words and let them get frustrated on their own instead of asking them to go screw themselves. That way, no smear and no twisting of words.

Also, he should tell jornos that his post match interview will be in just one language and he will decide which language it is going to be based on his mood that day.

Hey, hey... Suktuen, who is a lovely girl firmly behind her fav player, isn't actually very fluent in English, and she obviously believes in God - she meant that as a prayer to God, not that Federer is God. ;)

And yes, not many Fairweather Fans over here. There isn't a reason to stop cheering for a guy when he's in a (most likely, temporary) slump. If I remember well, Sampras had a career draught of 26 months somewhere during his career, so these eight months are surely not as upsetting to Roger's genuine fans as some in GM make it be. :D

:retard: That is a prayer TO God FOR Federer! Moron!

Hey, I admit I use the wrong words once in a while as well, but I think 'moron' is highly uncalled for here. Not everybody is fluent in English, and misunderstandings are easily made. ;)

Fed's dead. WHy not admit it?

Fedfan I know how you feel. Angry your fav is losing you so badly want him to win every match. And when you watch matches nd he is loseing to players that he should beat it makes you sick to your stomach. Becuses you have seen what he can do on a court.
But as a fan please stick in there. Im a huge fan of Venus Williams I just love the way she conducts her self on court etc etc. But when she was going though that massive slump and people where screaming that she would never win a slam agin and she steped up at wimbledon and played lights out tennis and beat Davenport 9-7 in the third set. I was so proud of Venus that day and just so proud to be a fans of hers.

And I felt so proud of Roger after the Wimbledon final even thou he lost he fought so hard and just gritted his teeth in. even thou he was not really playing well he still pushed Nadal to 5 sets.
I believe 100% that Roger will win the French, I believe 100% that Roger will surpass 14 slams. Winnig when you are playing well is easy winning when your backs agist the wall makes you a true champion. But even is Roger never wins anything eles it has been amazing being a fan of his watching him taking tennis to total another world sometimes.

But I know that roger will win the gold if not this year than 2012 :):):)

we gotta stay positive... he will make a comeback...

wimbledon final, cincy (against ginepri, even ivo)... we can see he is a fighter... how many would have just bent over under those circumstances? he hasnt given up...

wimbly was soooo close it could have gone either way really... (playing in total darkness  stupid wimbly officials), so was cincy's lost... Its terrible luck as nadal said.

I think ranking for 8/11 is as follow.

Roger will still be no#1 with 6330 and Rafa will have 6305.

Djokovic will have 5055 with a win tomorrow. If he loses, he will have 4905 on 8/11.

By 8/18,

Roger with 5830 and Rafa 6325. Djokovic with 5050 or 4900.

I think Rafa would have 6325 on 8/18 because Rotterdam points 25 should be added back to his ranking.

I'm a supporter of "Tennis in Olympics is nothing". But still come on Roger. This, with the special atmosphere and the carrying flag thing, should be a totally different experience from the normal tournament and could it be a turnaround...

I'm fine with his couple of wins and then going back to prepare for USO, but then it would be another big blow for his confidence...oh well. just come on.

From what I see on those pictures, I don't think he's in a grumpy mood at all. I wouldn't be surprised if that news agency is on the 'Fed-is-in-decline'- bandwaggon and is continuously on the look-out for signs that might indicate such... indeed.

For anyone who is interested.....Olympics TV schedule in the US. I'm seriously impressed with all the live coverage. I didn't think they'd show it live, but the more I think about it I'm sure NBC would rather show it live in the middle of the night than interrupt prime time programming to show it tape delayed.

:D Truly a star amongst stars:

The world No.1 tennis player Roger Federer meanwhile has had other issues with the athletes' village.

When Federer went to grab lunch at the village dining hall he was mobbed by more than 50 fellow Olympians gathering around to take pictures.

"You kind of feel sorry for the poor bugger," Hockeyroos striker Hope Munro told reporters at the village.

"All he wants to do is eat his lunch and he's got 1,000 people wanting to have photos with him, so I don't actually know if he got his lunch."

The 12-time Grand Slam champion has made his own accommodation arrangements.

Draw is out - I hope Roger is bracing himself for a loss here. His 1st round match is against Dima and Dima has been playing some good tennis in USO series tournaments. Even if he scrapes through Dima, he gets Soda, Birdman, and Blake all pretty good HC players.

The upside is that if he manages to win it will do wonders for his confidence.

Getting Karlovic again sucks (although he has to get to the 3rd round). But I'm sorry but if Roger can't beat these guys he doesn't deserve a medal. No Murray or Nalbandian in his quarter, no Djerk in his half. Blake hasn't been playing well this HC season. He lost to Kiefer 2 & 1 in Canada and Gulbis in R16 in Cincy. Roger had no problems with Soderling when he faced him earlier this year at Hamburg and Wimbledon.

Of course with Roger's recent form just about any draw is dangerous, but considering how important Olympics are to him my expectation is that he steps it up here and we don't see anything like what we saw in Canada.

Another  comment from Roger's presser.

"This will probably be my most unique unless I have a baby on my birthday, but that's not planned yet," he said. "It'll be very special. I'm thrilled it's on the opening ceremony, that I get to carry the flag for Switzerland. The whole combination is really, really nice.

I hope I don't stumble when I walk into the stadium."

I doubt Rogi will be "bracing himself for a loss here" -- why s he? Let's hope that August is just the beginning of his fortune turning around, for a change, this year... not saying it will be easy because it never will any more for Rogi, but the crap has to stop sometime soon... or the tennis gods do not exist [or only for one player] :p

In times gone by i.e. a few months ago, this would be a cakewalk draw for Fed. No Nalbandian, no Murray, no Djoko. On another note, Djoko being on Nadal's side again is now really against statistical probability witha low chance of it happening.

Nole on Rafa's side isn't some weird statistical probability, it's because Rafa and Ferrer can't be on the same side of the draw, due to the fact they are both from spain.

This comment from Roger's press conference cracked me up. :haha:

On the fact that at Sydney in 2000 he both carried the flag and met his girlfriend Mirka Vavrinec for the first time: I dont know which was better. I guess I pick meeting my girlfriend. Ive been with her for eight years. The flag was only 10 minutes.

Did Roger already carried the flag in 2000? I just remember 2004.

I'm looking forward to the opening ceremony and to the Olympics in general as I have always followed them with interest since my early childhood.

Roger always said that the Olympics are very important for him. Therefore I just hope he will have a wonderful time and enjoy the atmosphere :) Judging from the comments and reactions of some of the other athletes they really look forward to meet him.

With the results of this year we have learned that we have to take round by round. It's important that he gets the selfconfidence and trust in his game back.

Good luck Roger :)

The Federer circus rolls into town - but not the village

* Tom Fordyce
* 7 Aug 08, 12:52 PM

There are stars at these Olympics, and then there are stars.

As a mere mortal, you tend to assume that the elite athletes here in Beijing inhabit a strange egalitarian society of super-humans, all unfazed by each others' sporting achievements, all likely to attract roughly the same amount of attention from the world's media.

Roger Federer's regal arrival on Olympic Green on Thursday rather blew that theory out of the water.

The only way they could have squeezed more journalists into his press conference would have been to stack people on top of each other like school chairs.

Roger Federer faces a mob of photographers in Beijing

There were people sitting in the aisles. There were people hanging off the walls. There were people forced to wait outside with ears pressed to the wall like nosey neighbours.

At Usain Bolt's big media bun-fight the other day, I counted 17 TV crews. Roger attracted closer to 50.

So desperate were reporters to hear what the great man had to say that they yelled over the top of each other like City traders during a stockmarket meltdown.

"Roger!" would bellow four voices from different points of the room, before four simultaneous questions were shouted out at exactly the same time.

The most intriguing answer Federer had to give was about his decision to check into a five-star hotel for the duration out here, rather than stay in the athletes' village with the rest of the Swiss team.

It's not a question of luxury. Rafael Nadal's in the village, as is Andy Murray and every other tennis player here. According to Roger, it's simply a matter of getting badgered too much by his fellow elite athletes.

"It's not possible for me to stay there," he said. "There are so many athletes who want their pictures taken with me.

"I don't mind it, but every day? I can't escape it. It's not the ideal preparation for winning Olympic gold."

Some critics take that to mean that Federer is failing to embrace the true spirit of the Olympics. The famous bit about the world's youth coming together every four years doesn't work quite so well if half of them refuse to stay anywhere near the others.

For the anti-Fed brigade, his decision carries unfortunate echoes of point guard John Stockton's line when the 1992 US Dream Team refused to stay in the athletes' village in Barcelona.

"We don't intend to make a whole lot of friends here," said Stockton at the time, famously. "The Olympic spirit is beating people, not living with them."

Federer protests that the Olympics - despite his 12 Grand Slam titles, the millions in his bank account, the imminent loss of his world no.1 ranking to Nadal - really do matter to him.

First up, he's desperate to make up for the shock second round defeat he suffered to Tomas Berdych four years ago. Secondly, he points out that the Olympics have always played a significant part in his life.

He remembers as a child watching on television as Carl Lewis won medal after medal, and Marc Rosset taking tennis gold for Switzerland in 1992.

Eight years ago in Sydney he first met Mirka, the woman who's been his girlfriend ever since. In Athens, he carried the Swiss flag at the opening ceremony - a moment he describes as, "one of the greatest moments in my career".

"It's one of my dreams to do well at an Olympic Games," he insists. "To win gold would mean as much as a Wimbledon victory - it would be right up there with my Grand Slam wins.

"Carrying the flag was one of those things you can only dream about. Walking into the stadium and seeing all the Swiss flags, the athletes on one side and the fans on the other in a stadium as big as I've ever been in, was unforgettable."

It's hard not to feel a little sympathy for Federer.

This year's version of the Dream Team - or the Redeem Team, as they've been dubbed after their predecessors' appalling showing last time out - are hiding away in the InterContinental Hotel on Financial Street, miles from the buzz and banter of Olympic Green.

Yet they've received nothing but praise - on the basis that in Athens they refused to even stay in the city, preferring to house themselves on a 550m luxury liner instead.

It doesn't help Federer's cause when Nadal, who was mobbed at Beijing airport when he arrived on Tuesday, is positively effusive about staying in the Olympic village.

"It's unforgettable to be in there with all the elite athletes that we only otherwise see on television," he says. "To be with them there is a really marvellous feeling."

Thanks Rafa, Roger must be thinking. First the French Open, then Wimbledon, then the no.1 spot, and now this...

I guess the BBC forgot that this is the 1st Olympics where Nadal is participating as a singles player? In 2004 he played doubles only. Perhaps there are things he wants to experience that Roger has already experienced in 2000 and 2004? Or perhaps, even though he's the darling of the tennis world/press right now, he's not mobbed to the extent Roger would be/is and therefore staying in the Olympic village isn't as much of a problem for him? Who knows, but I doubt Roger is losing any sleep over the fact he's not staying in the village but Nadal is.

You know how the press is  Manichaeism and bandwagonnig at their best. For four years, the only flaw they could attribute to Roger was to make the tour too boring and predictable, his "decline" has changed things up. The drooling and worshiping is often replaced with little snide comments and digs, while Rafa gets all the ass kissing. Same with Djokovic who was showered with praise at this time last year when he's now showing signs of mental frailty, of questionable behaviour etc...

It's obviously ridiculous to be comparing Roger's and rafa choices given how different the stages of their career that they are in, are. And no matter what the fangirls (read Ackms :D) in GM think on an international level and especially with athletes from other sports, they're clearly not in the same league.

It's a little annoying given how much time Roger has devoted to press conferences/interviews and all but there's not much we can do about it.

It indeed is. But I doubt Roger hasn't been a bit bored, or annoyed by the press recently...I do hope he cut down the press even more. Nobody in tennis is in the same league as him in regards to getting attention, even if he is not No.1.

BTW, the schedule is out:

His first single will kick off at 10:30am Aug 10 - 1st match of the whole tournament.

His first double will start at about 7:00pm the same day.

BTW, I've noticed that Djokovic has been in Nadal's half for the last three tournaments, which is really low probability, so the next time he might land on the top half, which is Nadal's half again...Well, I can hope :p

On a side note, when Murray climbs up to No.4, I will almost have no preference as to who I want to see in Roger's half, probably I would prefer to see Djokovic by a small margin.

I think he personally got the biggest roars from the crowd during the opening ceremony. Certainly lots of love for Roger in that stadium.

They were quite partial to the tennis stars in our coverage, I think - quite a bit of linger and commenting on Roger and Nadal, even Murray and the Williams sisters. Gonzalez, of course, was flagbearer for Chile. Don't think I saw Hewitt though.

It's a nice practical outfit for the Swiss to have walked out in too, shorts on a warm summer night.

Thanks for posting the sched, yanchr. Hope our channel shows at least some of him.

Federer Still a Favorite with Chinese Fans (http://www.masters-cup.com/1/news/2008/federer_china.asp)

Four-time Tennis Masters Cup champion Roger Federer has been voted the most popular ATP player among Chinese fans in a recent online poll. Thousands logged on to one of China’s biggest websites, sina.com, to vote.

"I really like to play in China so it is a great honor to be voted the favourite tennis player by the Chinese fans,” said Federer, who has been No. 1 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings since February 2, 2004.

“I always have a good time at the Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai so I look forward to returning in November. Thanks to all my Chinese fans for the continued support.”

Another star of the ATP circuit, World No. 7 David Nalbandian, was voted second with 22.1 per cent as opposed to Federer's 28.5 per cent.

"I am happy to see I am popular with the Chinese fans,” said the 26-year-old. “Shanghai brings back very good memories as I won the Tennis Masters Cup there in 2005. I hope I will qualify again this year."

Why is that roger is so reluctant to step in on bh returns? He has the ability and I have seen him do it, even against nadal. But he doesnt fully believe in doing it consistently. Now that his movement isnt as crisp as before, he will have to take a few more risks.

It is almost  seeing him just slice those bh returns and get burned time and again by top players. He can get away with it against lower ranked foes but not against the big guns - nadal and djoko.

Old habits die hard especially ones that help you get 12 slams. It was not an issue until Nadal came along and easily scooped it up and hit it with interest to take the upper hand in a rally. Djokovic can return the slice with a BH drive DTL but it is not that easy for him due to his 2-hander.

Fed has always chosen to return serve with caution and I think he is trying to be more aggressive on 2nd serve returns. Two reasons why it has been slow going - his mindset of what a slice return gets him (a neutral rally) and the balance he needs between slicing and driving to perfect the strategy.

My more pressing concern is why (for example) does he not go back 2-3 feet to return serve from players like Karlovic or Roddick. It would help him get the ball back in court and then he could easily take control of the rally against these guys.

They are on serve Tursunov up 3-2. I'm not sure of the cpu requirements, but here's a link to the NBC livestream: http://www.nbcolympics.com/tennis/index.html

Roger, please win this match. I know it's an uphill climb to regain your form, but please start working on it now. Please. :)

First set to Roger at 6-3, but based on match stats, it doesn't seem to be an excellent set for him. Break courtesy of a DF from Tursunov.

Go Roger!

roger is playing ok. If it wasn't for his last results there would be no reason to worry about, it would be 'normal' roger.

btw, I don't know if its the angle of the camera (I'm sure it is), but it seems like the game is being played twice as faster than it usually is :S

170kmh 2nd serves are looking like 220kmh bombs!

Fed looked pretty impressive today, almost "old-self" and as much as he has been maybe all year. He played the bh like a defensive shot most of the match, using lots of varied-depth slices that gave Tursunov no rhythm. He even started pulling him in with it only to then pass with the bh (even one dtl flick!) More often than not, he took advantage of having a fh with nice depth and pace and he set up some easy put aways with it (cc and io, even a fh dtl winner on the run). In general, the movement was pretty good, and he ran around the backhand to hit clean winners several times. He also moved to net well, closing the gap quickly. He had some nice stretch volleys in the middle of the second set. The reaction seemed a little slow, but probably because the court speed looks really fast.

Overall, I'm pretty pleased with his performance. The return was more chip than aggression today, but he had nice depth with it and it looked to be staying low. He had some errors, but more often than not, he played within himself, especially on the bh, and that kind of mentality has been rare this year. He even gave about 4-5 "Cmon." Quite pleased!

I'm sure the weather is a factor in how guys are playing out there. Right now the humidity is around 80% and the temp is 80F. I'm watching the Ferrer match and he looks like he wants to die out there. I can't imagine playing in such hot and humid weather. I don't think it was that humid in Cincy. :o

Thanks for the detailed comments :wavey:

Was stuck in the office and the livestream was obviously blocked :o But as long as he plays well, I can bear not watching him :D

Hopefully we have a livestream for the doubles as well.

I missed the first few games of the 1st set .. and didn't think there was much to choose between the 2 of them as I began watching until Roger got the break. But the 2nd set ... that was vintage Federer ... some of those shots were stunning. But I'll feel more relaxed when he carries his vintage game to Rd 2, 3 etc - all the way to winning that gold medal he so badly wants.

Come on Roger... believe you can do it, and you will.

Hi Karin:wavey:
Would you happen to know when they'll be showing Roger's match. He played during my midmoring nap, I needed some sleep after waking up early to watch the swimming finals:o

Hi Kim! :wavey:

I just returned home from a festival which really tired me out, so I missed it as well. I wish I knew the exact time, but they aren't telling so far... I'll just keep my TV running and - wait -. Can't take that long anymore I guess...

It is the angle of the camera. Anyway, well played Roger. Considering the conditions and the fact that this was a first round match, I am impressed with the scoreline. Now he has to keep it up.

Murray is out.

Yeah, Lu played the match of his life. Totally outplayed Murray, Lu was so aggressive all the time

Murray has his weaknesses though, his second serve was just spun it at about 70mph most of the time, half way up the court.

And plus, Murray has his chances plenty of times. Lead 5-3, 3 set points at 6-5*, had 5 break points to break at 4-4 second set to serve for the set.

Ferrer is out too :D
