Blake saved 3 match points on Gulbis's serve (although Gulbis double-faulted on one of them). Couldn't save the 4th.

never in doubt. i called this match yesterday.

still troubled by the following:

1. poor shot selection from E-Gul
2. little or no point construction from E-Gul
3. little bit too careless/reckless
4. lack of consistency

Oh yes

First ever QF appearance at a TMS for Ernie. He's definitely up there with the big boys now. :yeah:

Still too eh... flakey to make it to the final I think... ;) - but of course a promise for the (near) future.

E-Gul is likely to get Djokovic next. it would be tremendous match if E-Gul was really consistent and tactically smart.

Almost choked it away, didn't you Ernests? :yeah:

1st set was pretty good by both men, then the quality dropped, and I already thought that Gulbis is a goner after the 2nd set. Good to see him finding some strong character.

Good win though. Now James is defeated on his favorite surface as well :)

 for James.

He's got a very decent shot at being seeded for the US Open now. Just one more win either here or at the Olympics should do it.

i think Gulbis can surely beat the djoker if djoker beats seppi. gulbis right now just bashes the ball too much,he needs to learn how to construct points better. Still,he has the game to beat the big boys and djokovic will be scared.

Emm.. I meant it in a way that Gulbis has won Blake not only on his least favorite surface (clay), but also on his favorite surface (hard) now. No bashing intended, I'm a James' fan as well.

Same thing I was wondering  Blake looked pretty frosty all match towards Gulbis, the commentators mentioned a few times how it seemed like "there's no love lost between these two."

I would like to think that it was because of Blake's loss at RG but it seemed like a bit too lame of a reason for them to have issues

I noticed his name wasn't on the roster but I figured he was holding out for whatever reason. So he's really not going this year? I'm actually shocked. That's his home tournament. That's J-Block land. That's like Roger saying "Nah, not this year" to Halle.

there is that other side of the coin as well. some of the players have figured out how to play him.

his "see ball, close eyes, blast the damn ball" style of play does have its drawbacks these days as well.

body language is useless. he shows little or no fire.

That's J-Block land. That's like Roger saying "Nah, not this year" to Halle.I'm sure it's because it's the week after the Olympics. Even if he loses early in Beijing, I imagine it'd be tough to bounce back from the trip in order to play in New Haven - maybe they'll save a WC for him just in case, but I would be surprised if he put that kind of strain on himself to play there after the trip to Beijing with the USO right after.... I'm sure if Halle were the week after the Olympics, Fed would say "sorry, i love ya, but not this year"
