Mods feel free to move this to the Junior section. I figured that most people interested in this would be more likely to see it if it's in the USA section.

Draw is out:

http://www.ustaboys.com/results/info.php

Winner receives a WC into the US Open main draw and runner-up gets a qualy WC.

Seeds are as follows:

1. Ryan Harrison
2. Chase Buchanan
3. Adam El Mihdawy
4. Alexander Domijan
5. Austin Krajicek
6. Ty Trombetta
7. Bradley Klahn
8. Ryan Thacher
9. Jarmere Jenkins
10. Tennys Sandgren
11. Dennis Nevolo
12. Rhyne Williams
13. Kyle McMorrow
14. Brennan Boyajian
15. Steve Johnson
16. Wil Spencer
17. Kevin King
18. Denis Lin
19. Casey Watt
20. James Seal
21. Alex Llompart
22. Ryan Noble
23. Walker Kehrer
24. JT Sundling
25. David Nguyen
26. Drew Courtney
27. Ryan Lipman
28. Marc Powers
29. John Huang
30. Waylon Chin
31. Devin Britton
32. Frank Carleton

I'd like to know what criteria they used for the seeding. I'm not entirely sure how Rhyne Williams ended up at #12 since he's got a pretty good shot at winning it. Llompart is a little low too, and I would've put Thacher, last year's runner-up, a little higher as well. Kecki, a semifinalist from last year isn't even seeded. But whatever, seedings don't matter much anyways. It seems to me that this year's tournament is a little more competitive than it has been for a few years. There are a few names that have a good shot at having fairly successful pro careers, so this should be interesting. I wouldn't be surprised to see a number of them win. Play begins on Friday (August 1).

Final is somewhat surprisingly Thacher-Krajicek. Krajicek upset Harrison 7-5 6-1 in the semis. Thacher rolled Ty Trombetta 6-0 6-1. Interestingly enough whoever wins and gets the wildcard is off to college in the fall. Krajicek already played a semester last year at Texas A and M and the cerebral Thacher is off to play at Stanford. I'm picking Thacher to win tomorrow, but good luck to both. In the 18s doubles final Harrison/Buchanan beat Johnson/Klahn 6-4 1-6 7-5. I'm sure Harrison and Buchanan are disappointed with being upset in singles, but the main draw WC for doubles isn't anything to sneeze at.

Thacher is in no hurry to turn pro, that's for sure. Everything I've read about him gives me the impression that he may stay all four years. Winning the national championship may be the only thing that would cause him to contemplate turning pro. He's very committed to academics apparently and has not really shown an inclination to fully commit to tennis any time soon.

I'd like to see how good he'd be if he did commit to tennis. He's reputedly a big, athletic lefty with a good serve and the ability to play at the net. Despite his size, some question whether his groundstrokes are powerful enough to play at a high level professionally. I've read that he uses a lot of spin. He's been described as being a very good defensive player due to his length and athleticism. He's universally lauded for his modesty and maturity. He's interesting, but it may be four years before we get to see him compete professionally on a regular basis (if ever).

Austin Krajicek def. Ryan Thacher 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-0

It's a surprising result to me, especially as lopsided as the last three sets were. Thacher has lost in the finals at Kalamazoo three straight years (twice in the 18's, once in the 16's).

Krajicek will get a main draw wild card at the U.S. Open. Thacher will get a qualifying wild card.

In the 16's, Jordan Cox defeated Denis Kudla, which was also a surprise. Cox will get a wild card into the Junior U.S. Open.

More upsets today. Here are your quarters:
http://ustaboys.com/draws.html?c=draws&m=show&tyear=2009&eventtype=2&drawtype=0&round=4&match=0
It's funny how things usually turn out in terms of Kalamazoo and great, or even good, American players.
Sampras, Agassi, Courier, Martin, Roddick, Blake, Querrey, Ginepri, Isner, Kendrick, Reynolds, and Spadea put together have 1 singles title there. Which was Querrey in the 16s.
From the people left Kudla is best for American tennis, yet it would be cool to see a real surprise champion.

Cox didn't do anything to prove that Wimbledon wasn't a fluke. He will still probably get a qualifying wild card, but it will be based strictly on his Junior Wimbledon performance.

Thanks for reviving this thread.

Hovhannisyan (what a name) appears to be a bit underrated. In the past year, he's taken Kudla and Evan King to a third set in ITF tournaments and beat Britton in futures qualifying. I'm not expecting much from him in the future, but this isn't the first time he's shown he can compete with the top juniors at a high level. Based on that, his win over Cox, although unexpected, isn't totally out of the blue. Still hadn't heard of him until now, though. He's also in the doubles semis.

I'd like to see Kudla or Buchanan win it now. Buchanan-Jenkins should be an interesting match tomorrow.

Buchanan 6-0, 6-1 over Hovhannisyan. Wow. He has yet to lose more than six games in a match. Total dominance so far, and that figures to continue tomorrow against Lipman or Sarmiento.

I have to say I didn't see this coming. He was definitly among the favorites coming in, but his struggles in college created doubt (in my mind) about his ability to win this tournament.

SHB
08-15-2009, 09:41 PM
Lipman came from behind to beat Sarmiento. On second thought, I think it will be a good match. Lipman is a mature, tricky player. Buchanan is volatile and could be frustrated by Lipman. I'll say Buchanan in five.

SHB
08-16-2009, 09:46 PM
Buchanan def. Lipman 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. What a tournament for him. It's hard to reconcile his performance in college with this performance unless he was injured back in April and May.

Giron could pose a threat. Ore with an impressive win over Fratangelo. He will be great for the Aggies in the upcoming year

Frank in scary form. Beating Gonzales Austin 6-0 6-1? Cavs aren't getting any weaker by adding Frank. Hopefully we get to see the Sock vs Frank final.

Who do you guys think will be invited to the wild card playoff, which begins Thursday? Here are my picks:

1. Denis Kudla (already confirmed to be participating)
2. Daniel Kosakowski
3. Mitchell Frank
4. Bjorn Fratangelo
5. Marcos Giron
6. Tennys Sandgren
7. Rhyne Williams
8. Bradley Klahn

Other possibilities: Alex Domijan, Evan King, Alexios Halebian, Jordan Cox, Andrea Collarini

I don't see older players like Smyczek, Kuznetsov, and Levine being invited. I'm assuming that Steve Johnson will get a main draw wild ard by virtue of winning the NCAAs.

It's hard to say what they'll do with Donald Young. Given his outburst after the French Open playoff, I'm thinking he won't be participating, but maybe things have been patched up behind the scenes. But if so, then I'd say he's a strong candidate for a main draw wild card given his ranking and performance in Washington, although getting routed by Bogomolov in Cincinnati hurts his chances, as does the fact that he's received many wild cards in the past.

Good list. I would leave Frank and Giron out and move up two of the other possiblilities. Frank is getting a Q WC, and he should be happy with that at this stage in his life. Giron can just play the Junior tournament.

It looks like Frank is indeed playing. I think he's a better player right now than King, Cox, Collarini, and Halebian. Domijan is debatable, but he has struggled since the NCAA Championships in May.

I think Giron can be competitive. He gave Sock his toughest match and recently took Artem Sitak to the limit in an ATP qualifiying match. He has also gotten the better of Bjorn Fratangelo on hard courts this year. I look for him to do very well at the Junior U.S. Open and he wouldn't be a pushover in the playoff. Being one of the youngest players on the list also works in his favor.

If that's the case, who's getting the last wild card? 7 of the 8 wild cards are pretty much spoken for.

1. Australian WC
2. French WC
3. National Playoff Champion
4. Jack Sock (Kalamazoo champ)
5. Steve Johnson (NCAA champ)
6. Ryan Harrison (presumably)
7. Wild card playoff winner

Who's #8? The playoff runner-up?

It is interesting to see the names in the first post. Several have turned pro last year or have graduated this year and are ready to embark on their pro career.

Draws: http://ustaboys.com/draws.html

2012 Seedings

Boys 18s:
1. Mitchell Krueger
2. Michael Redlicki
3. Dennis Novikov
4. Mackenzie McDonald
5. Noah Rubin
6. Jared Hiltzik
7. Ronnie Schneider
8. Alexios Halebian
9. Spencer Papa
10. Thai Kwiatkowski
11. Stefan Kozlov
12. Connor Farren

28. Harrison Richmond
29. Austin Smith
30. Shane Vinsant
31. Harrison Adams
32. Mac Styslinger

Would love to see Krueger and Rubin meet in the quarterfinal, not a bad draw for either player.
Also would like to see Kwiatkowski and Escobedo battle it out in the 3rd round, but I think Novikov will be the winner from this section.
I think Schneider, Craig, or Adams will come out of section 4.
Would love to see a Papa-Brymer match , Hiltzik will be tough to beat.
I think Vinsant will be the one to beat in section 6.
Kozlov should be able to make it to the 5th round along with Halebian.
As for the last section, it is hard to see anyone get past Redlicki.

I hope Krueger wins it or makes the final so that he can free up a USO qualifying wildcard since the college-dropout trio of Kosakowski, Sandgren, and Williams are useless :smash:.

Boys 16s:
1. Mitch Stewart
2. Paul Oosterbaan
3. Aron Hiltzik
4. Logan Smith
5. Thomas Fawcett
6. Chase Perez-Blanco
7. Tommy Mylnikov

For the 16s, would like to see Henrik Wiersholm, Daniel Kerznerman, or Logan Smith win the title. Btw, where are Mmoh, Tiafoe, and Blumberg? :smash:

I was right, Jared was the one in orange. Spencer, if you are going to throw the racket at least keep it on your side of the court :smash:.

2 questions:

1) is there live videostreaming somewhere?

2) what was the deepest a MD-WC (winner of this) or Quali-WC (runner up of this) made it into the USO draw? just curious... :)

Not so surprising, really. In my opinion the tops seeds this year were weaker than we've seen in the past few years. Not even the top two seeds, Krueger and Redlicki, are able to fight at the challenger level yet. At least guys like Jack Sock and Mitchell Frank, Alex Domijan Chase Buchanan and Rhyne Williams, or even Ryan Harrison were winning futures events around the time they played KZOO.

I'm not saying this years group won't improve to be good though.

1) Live streaming is here if it doesn't rain http://146.113.47.100/view/index.shtml Not perfect, but it's better than nothing.

2) I'm not sure about this. Last year the winner was Jack Sock and he reached the second round against Roddick, but this decade they all usually lose first round. There were probably some deep runs by winners a couple decades ago when teens could do well in the ATP. I just checked the archive and Michael Chang was a Kalamazoo winner.

Yeah, I think all the quarterfinalists here would have a hard time getting a win at the challenger level. Oh well, I wish the winner (and finalist) the best at the Open (USO Q). The wildcard recipient will likely draw a top 10 seed anyway, soak in the atmosphere and enjoy the moment. I have no preference in the winner, but since Halebian already turned pro he could use the money.

Btw, do the winners of the 16s get wildcard into the Jr. US Open?
