Will Federer lose to another mug American after losing to Fish and Roddick this year? If he loses, he'll only need a loss against Blake to complete the amazing feat of being defeated by the Fantastic Four.

:o, I'd say Federer 7-5 6-3. Including drama + Ginepri choking at *5-3 in the 1st

I can't possibly envision Federer losing to Ginepri with his number one ranking on the line.............. But then again, I couldn't see him being demolished by Mardy Fish either.

If Fed is in self destruction mode : Ginepri in 3.

If Fed is himself, he should win this in 2.

If Fed manages to lose this match (most likely losing to himself rather than to Ginepri, should that indeed happen :speakles:), he might as well go play challengers for a couple of months...

Hopefully Fed will be looking to make a statement after his last match.

So Fed in 2.

So Fed in 2.

I think he was trying to make a statement in Toronto too and it didn't end so well. That's why it's hard to say who'll win. I'll go with Fed, but it will be interesting to see if he can keep his FH together this time. At least, you wouldn't think Ginepri would give him as much trouble as Simon.

It'll also be interesting just because they have they same coach. I don't know how it works when two players share the same coach and they play each other. I saw Higueras with Fed in Toronto but he was there with Ginepri today.

If Fed loses to Ginepri, he will announce his retirement (a la McEnroe after losing to Gilbert).

Aside from the ranking drama, this match interesting because they both coached by Jose Higueras.
Ginepri has played Federer tight at Cincy before...

Federer has been playing like absolute garbage on hard courts all year long...

I'll take Robby in 3 sets.

I didn't know about the coaching situation. I surprises me to be honest.

But anyhow, in this case it's a conflict of interest, so it'd be interesting to see what Higueras does.

Federer has never really blown Ginepri out of the water in the four times they've played, including during Ginepri's megaslump of 2006-2007. Ginepri is playing fairly well. It's not exactly easy to serve Bjorkman a bagel on a fast surface. Nevertheless, I'm gonna go with Fed, even if he is playing relatively poorly. Regardless, I don't think it will be a blowout.

I'll be watching peering through my fingers.

If he loses this one - he might as well take the rest of the year off and get his head back together.

Hmmm.

Yeah Roger's been iffy this year, but he's even more unstable the first round of tournaments.

Keeping his no.1 position SHOULD see him through this one in a 3 setter.

don't call Ginepri a mug and don't compare him to Roddick. he's pretty good actually and shouldn't be underestimated. i expect Federer to win but Ginepri would give him some struggle ;)

I hope that Federer gets another blow

but I think Ginepri is not in needed form as he even taken the 2006 (or 2007) Federer into three sets.

Before Federer's loss to Simon, I scoffed at the WWW thread for that match. I guess I shouldn't be scoffing at this WWW thread vs Ginepri. Fed in three tie-breaks if he can keep his mentality in check. Ginepri in three tie-breaks if Federer can't keep it together.

I didn't know about the coaching situation. I surprises me to be honest.

But anyhow, in this case it's a conflict of interest, so it'd be interesting to see what Higueras does.
Ginepri sought Jose Higueras in July 2007 because he needed a coach. Jose came to Cincy with him last year, and decided he liked Robby, so he agreed to coach him. They continued working together the rest of the year, including during Madrid, where Robby lost to Federer. When Federer was looking for a coach, he sought Higueras knowing that he was already working with Robby, but being the #1 player in the world, he may have figured that Jose would kiss Robby goodbye. However, Jose wanted to keep working with Robby. Robby was in Jose's office when he told him about the call Roger had made to him, and told Robby that the power was in his hands, if he said "no", Jose would not work with Roger, but if he said "yes", they would work something out. Robby, not wanting to rob Jose of an opportunity of working with Fed, agreed that Jose could work with him. Jose told Robby that he was to remain his top priority though.

Robby is one of the tour players known for choking, so even if he got into the unlikely position of leading against Federer, like he did in Cincy 2005 before the rain delay, there's almost no way he's going to keep it. He lacks the belief, and just doesn't have the calmness inside of him to keep it together when he needs to the most.

Go back to 2005, which Robby has a great chance with first set on hand, but still lose

This time, different Robby, Different Roger.

Fed in straights, then dumps Higueras. What the he11 he is doing with a guy coaching two players is beyond me.

Maybe I'm missing something, but didn't Federer just hire Higueras for the claycourt season? Is this a rumor that has worked it's way into MTF fact, or did I just miss the two of them say that they would extend the contract?

They started working together for the clay court season and Fed said that they were going to see how it goes. He was with Fed in Halle, but with Ginepri at Wimbly. He was back in Fed's box in Toronto.

Robby in 3!

Well, I'm not too sure whether you really want this to happen - isn't the "label" Sparta supposed to be rather exclusive than arbitrary? And if so, doesn't that inevitably diminish
the value of every single predestined Spartan as much as it turns Federer more and more into a one-man army - a lone fighter, being on his very own and worth admiring? Valiant prospects.

If Roger is still Roger (and I have the feeling that it is so, at least in the pride department), then he's not giving away #1 that easy to Rafa and will try his best, specially after Toronto: Roger wins this one, whatever the final score.
