I didn't see the entire match, but from my limited viewing, Berdych has some very nice set-up point to either hit clean winners or force the errors.

Berdy choked in 2nd set :tape: :o

Berdman finally got a win over Gonzo after losing 3 matches in a row against him. It was a good performance, but never know what can happen to him in the next round, where he plays Seppi.

Was it just Gonzalez's crapiness or did Berdych really move better than usually?

2nd set aside, I thought Berdych played very well. Nice volleys, and shot set-ups

First win against Gonzo () - the stats showed that Gonzo actually scored one more point than Berdych...

Berdych should have wrap up the match in straights.
I think that he is capable of going very far here.
Seppi is beatable, Faker is out of form.

TBH, a mixing of both.
Fernando, as usual, started veeery slow. He was exposed on his BH :o [nothing too strange though] for most of the 1st set. Berdych started very pumped, hit some nice winners and dictated most of the rallies. Fernando missed a lot.

In the second, Fernando started a little bit better, cut off most of his UEs buuuuuuuut, at 2-2 he decided to colapse. Berdych's serve saved him from a couple of 15-30 situations so he was very positive which frustrated Fernando too much. Berdych carried his positive attitude and broke Fernando in the fifth game. Berdych seemed like he was going to win in two but nah, at *3-2, he totally messed things up and let Fernando come back. The following 4 games were a gift from Berdych. Too many UEs and TBH Fernando did nothing too spectacular to clinch it 6-3.

In the third, Berdych was decided to take the match, he got an early break and never looked back. His serve was working great when it mattered. On the other hand, Fernando was playing much better but never took the iniciative in the rallies, he crumbled as usual and his behaviour dropped.
At the end, Berdych took it 6-3 with a little of resistance from Fernando.

Fernando needs to work on his mental game. He started arguing with the umpire because of a let cord first [ he heard it but the umpire didn't ] and then something about the hawk eye system, he stated that players are allowed to have time to see if they want to used the hawk eye  something like that .. I didn't get it to be honest...

Oh well, on to Beijing. Feña

I half-watched most of the match (only sort-of paying attention for parts), and Berdych definitely played pretty solidly, especially with getting to net and volleying pretty well that I saw. It wasn't a really compelling match, but I thought Berdych won it more than Gonzalez lost it, and looks like he could make a decent run in Cincy.

Much needed win for Tomas. Hopefully he can start to turn his year around at the end stages of the season.

Well done for Tomas after losing the last three against Gonzalez, a good match apart from the loss of concentration in the 2nd set and he was moving well, always a key for him. Now the match against Seppi has the potential for great comedy, anything could happen.

Gonzalez now can start thinking about the most important tournament of the year for him, hopefully we wil see the AO 2007 Gonzalez on that one.

I think Gonzalez was complaining that Berdych took too much time looking at the mark to decide if he wanted to challenge, so on a later shot that he was pretty sure was out, he sort of sarcastically took a really long time to look at the mark to prove the point (he ended up being right). It was kind of funny, along with his bashing of the net to get the let sensor to go, but it seemed like it was just a distraction that he really couldn't afford in a fairly close match.

The words "Berdych" and "run in this tournament" do not belong in the same sentence, just take it a match at the time.

I know I'm biased... imo h2h Berdych-Gonzo is now 2-2 cos Tomas didn't lose to Gonzo in 2006 Madrid, he lost to Madrid crowd

shows how crap berdych is

Gonzo sucks nuts these days, losing to good matchups :smash:

Berdych didnt play his best and still won the match and should have won in 2 if he didnt choke... horrible IMHO

Quite a bit of bitching between these two, via the umpire.

When Gonzalez left the court for a comfort break after the first set, Tomas was on Norm's case, saying he should have had at least one ball abuse warning from 2 different occasions, plus a time violation when he took some time to remove some ankle tape, I believe.

Our commentators thought it was interesting that he chose to do this behind Gonzalez's back while he was off court and that though he'd comfortably won the first set, he was still complaining about something.

At one point Gonzo thought he heard the letcord machine in a point - when he lost the point he asked Norm, Norm said no I heard nothing. So he walked up to the net and banged the net four times with his racquet at different forces - just to check Norm heard them all

Then later on Berdych twice signalled a ball was out to Gonzalez but Gonzo both times just ignored Tomas's indication and challenged anyway (balls were out as stated). Then later still Gonzo was moaning at Norm about how long it took Tomas to make a challenge, and on the very next point he very ostentatiously spent 30 seconds or so peering round for a mark before issuing the challenge (which was correct).

These little subplots were more interesting than the tennis :)

Handshake at the end was fine though.

berdych looked afraid closing this match out like he has never played against a top20 player or in front of a big crowd. and this is supposed to be a top10 player. one of the worst of all-time.

Seeded players losing to Berdych was very normal before he became a top player.

Berdych played well and served well.

Gonzo's moody behavior got the better of him.

Still, always nice to see someone beat there "beast".

Am I remembering wrong or did they put the shield by Gonzalez's name thing instead of Berdych's?

its ok mate... not to worry... the ATP will collapse in a week or two.... and with it the whole masters series concept... thereby reducing all sheild tallys to 0...

Gonzalez's tantrums are quite entertaining sometimes.

As for Norm Chryst, typical response : "I heard nothing", "I saw nothing". Which baffles me everytime a player asks him for confirmation on a call and even accepting his word

Nice win for Berdych. I'd like to see him get some decent results. I'll pray for the wind gods to be kind to him in his match against Seppi ;)

Same here, but was leaning towards Berdych as he's generally been in worse form this year (plus being injured) and could really use some good wins.
