What a snoozefest. Kiefer only made it competitive for one game (when Rafito was serving at 2-2 in the 2nd set).

Some stats:
Nadal Kiefer
1st serve %: 63 47
Winners: 14 17
UEs: 15 31

Expected win, never in doubt... :p

CONGRATS Rafa on regaining the Roger's Cup after Montreal 2005! Well deserved, by far the best player around in Toronto (and I daresay: everywhere, right now) :hatoff: :worship:

The first set was a rather boring, one-sided affair, where Rafa didn't even have to get near to playing his best HC level. At the beginning of the second set, Kiefer gave it his best shot, but after he couldn't get the break done at 2-2, a very Old Tennis Rule once again applied here: Rafa in stead broke him the very next game. Thereafter - Game Over.

Kudo's to Kiefer for making it to his first Master's final ever.

nadal playing too strong for kiefer. The only problem I think Nadal could still improve on is to hit his groundies more consistently deep. Too often his groundies land short, and I think that can become more vulnerable in HC that are less susceptible to his spin like the us open. He is nearly flawless at net, he chooses his chances to run up there wisely. Well done and congrats to Nadal for winning this tournament. He is surely going to reach #1 soon. And well done to Kiefer for the effort and reaching the final.

Not the greatest of finals. Neither one played even close to their best tennis, but Rafa never needed to. There was no need for him to kick it into his highest gear when it never appeared that Kiefer had any sort of strategy to pressure him, let alone win.

Congrats to Rafa, of course a worthy champion and just the better player! :hatoff:

Except some other finals Kiefer lost, this time it wasn't one in which he had a chance to win, realistically. But he has to be pissed off a because he thought he could continue playing as he was Simon, Blake and all those opponents before. I'm not sure if he realized that it takes something special. Easier said than done. And he had a few shorter balls from Nadal on at least two break points, he could have pounded them more trying the winner into the corner, instead of playing a soft shot which Nadal retrieves easily to get back into control of the point.

Still loved to see Kiwi in the final, very good week to follow him :)

Well, it's the first time the ATP hands out ranking points for the Olympics at all, so I guess it's an improvement... though one could also think it's rather awkward, as not all players (with sufficient ranking points) are even allowed to attend!

I think I understand the rationale behind it, though - no points -> a lot of players wouldn't even bother to turn up over there. Money (and ATP points) Talks and Shit Walks... ;)

Ranking points were awarded for the Athens Olympics as well.

400 is just right for the winner because they have no chance of defending it and will take a hit in the rankings the following year. It's an interesting dynamic with the bronze medal match before the final and the four semifinalists all receiving different ranking points once it's all said and done.

Well, you do have a point, and opinions vary BUT its the olympics, I mean come on. Its every four years!

Four y e a r s. Either give out no points, and make it worth the "simple" prestige of winning it for your country, OR If you do give points make it worth as much as the Masters Cup.

Sorry folks, back on topic.

It is fine to award points, but they should not count these points for the race, precisely because the entry in the Olympics is restricted by country. For example, suppose that Verdasco has a run and finishes #9 in the rankings, and the difference from the #8 is just the points gained from the #8 in the Olympics. In this case Verdasco should go to the TMC, since he could not enter the Olympics due to country restrictions, even though he had the ranking necessary to enter. I doubt such a scenario can occur realistically but it is not hard to make such an adjustment.

Rafa goes from winning majors on red clay, then green grass, and now a Masters on blue hardcourt, all in a row. Very impressive. :worship:

And well done to Kiefer for finally making his first Masters final after 74 tries.

Yes, the quality of the final was not great but that's Federer/Davydenko/Roddick's fault for not living up to their seeding.

Interesting stat from the ATP:

"The victory is Nadal’s 30th ATP singles title, making him the third youngest player – at the age of 22 years, one month and 24 days – to capture 30 titles. He is behind only Bjorn Borg (21 years, 7 mos., 9 days) and Jimmy Connors (22 years, 20 days)."

That's a very interesting point you make here Merton. I fully agree, as indeed not all possible contesters are allowed to even play the Olympics. It would be a real shame if this horror scenario would indeed happen.

Kiefer beat himself today as did Roger at Wimbledon...as will Djokovic at the USO and next year's AussieOPen.
You are a mug.:D
Nadal plays on clay even forgetting he is on grass or hard. Clay court tennis rules.:D The new reality of tennis! Yeah, I like it. He showed us how the real tennis must to be played.:worship:

it's pretty boring now....

Perhaps if Nadal were French, you would find it more interesting

this only one who had a chance was gasquet but he can't kill the bull when he had the occasion...

Well at least Gasquet won a set. In the other two, Gasquet did not have a chance

Now it seems the only one who can stop it on HC is Federer if he manage to recover and play his best.

Anyway it could be a great fight for the n°1 spot !

Nadal does not defend points, so he does not really have win tournaments to become number one.
Virtually speaking he is already number one. In August, Nadal will appear in the lists as the new number one. It is a matter of time.

Money (and ATP points) Talks and Shit Walks... ;)

Sorry folks, back on topic.

actually it's the 2nd time Olympics gives ATP points , 2004 Athens Olympics also gave 400 points to the winner :retard:

I suppose your suspicions in the last month will be for the whole football Spanish team, for Nadal, for Sastre.

Yes we have to admit it: we have delicious Mediterranean food and excellent red wine. And this is a terrific drug for all of us. Perhaps if you start eating like this, and stop eating hamburgers, hot dogs and cokes you can become one day a true champion.

This thread needs to stay on topic or it will be closed. The endless insinuations about doping have been done to death lately and have no part of this match result discussion so I have removed it.

Please follow GM rules in this matter - discussions about such subjects have to be about specific allegations and be backed up by other sources and they can be discussed in a thread on that subject in a sensible manner.

I am not a moderator, but in the rules READ BEFORE YOU POST, there is the following rule:

1. Refrain from starting threads with the sole intention of speculating on a delicate issue involving a particular player. That includes doping and match-fixing allegations, as well as gossip about the given player's personal life.

All,

Y'all know I don't like to crack on players for no reason, but Kiefer is one cold piece of work. Did y'all notice how he shook Rafa's hand like he was too good to even be bothered. He was as cold as ice at the net. Tsk. Tsk.

Anyway, I was glad Rafa tore into his rump.

What can one say about Rafa really? He's proven he is the one to beat in 08. He is playing like Superman. The commentators mentioned how he loves Cinci - because he loves to play golf there. Uh-oh - don't let him get good in golf - for he might just join the tour. I can see him and Tiger shaking hands one day. He just might replace Roger in Tiger's affections if he takes up golf. LOL!

Good win for Nadal and great that he can win here on a hardcourt before the US Open. He is getting better and better on hard all the time and so it can only be time before he wins a hardcourt slam.

Great win for Nadal this week again and he coming closer to beat Federer from #1 !!!

VAMOS Warrior NADAL !!!!!!!

Kiefer had fun speech at the end of match when saying he does not know if he can come back in two years. He will see if he can walk or is too old  Maybe Bilbo's grandmother can give him a wheelchair.

And good to hearing that Kiefer said "Nadal is going to be #1 very soon"

so even the players write off Federer and know who is strongest now and hope rankings give that proove soon!

Mimi
07-29-2008, 03:41 AM
yeah, i agreed. Kiefer seems unhappy and cold, when rafa took the initiative to talk with him in the ceremony, he seemed disinterested too, well, may be he was disappointed for the lost, but come on, he didn't have much chance and hope right? and i also don't like it, is when he won the match against Simon, a ball kid handed back the towel to him, he ignored him, even he was in good mood .......
