Will Nadal surpass this year the ATP 2006 Race record of Federer ?

The record is from 2006 and belongs to Federer: 1674 points.
Nadal is now, before Toronto final, at 1025 points.
The idea of him surpassing this Federer's record doesn't seem so far-fetched at all now, in light of Rafa's moment form and results.

So, what do you think, MTF-ers?

No chance

Winning USOpen and TMC means 350 points, so he'll need 3 more AMS'es on his belt, apart from the 2 big tourneys (USOpen and TMC) left in the calendar.

Indeed, it is necessary for Rafa to be almost perfect until the end of the season in order to do that. 10% chances IMHO...

The big problem for the tour now is that, if one-two years ago almost everyone of the guys had menthal problems in front of Roger, now absolutely everybody (Roger and Djoker included), experiences menthal problems in front of Nadal.

And this is a big gain on Rafa's part and he knows it. His reign depends on this now-gained aura of invincibility. The longer the aura lasts, the longer he'll win tourneys, straight-set-not-generating-knee-problems short matches, the longer his reign will last.

Federer could tell us a lot of stories about this psychological effect over his fellow players...but maybe he already forgot about it ;)

I wonder why, rhetorically, of course...

Random dissapearances of threads without notice is sadly a daily occurrence here. Some stray micro black hole going on rampage accross GM, I guess it must be

Now, before Beijing final, Rafa is at 1151.
If he wins, and the if is very small, he'll be at 1175, with
USOpen + Madrid + Paris + Shanghai in his schedule.
Roger's record is at 1674.
So Rafa would need to gain 500 more points in the last 4 events where he is officially scheduled to play.

This means that winning USOpen is mandatory if he wants to burry Roger's record...

What do you think guys ?

there's one more option for Rafa:

since his calendar (from his official site) has nothing between USOpen and Madrid, he could choose to play one smaller tournament at the end of september or in october (Moscow, Vienna or maybe Basel), in order to improve his last optional score , now 25 from Rotterdam (remember his bad form back then?)...

So he could gain approx. 50 more race points this way....since the guy is clearly on a mission to erase Federer from the record books, I see him doing just that...

I think he will go deep at USO and clinch year end number 1 in Madrid. It's absurd to try and chase that record.

Assuming he wins Gold, tomorrow, he will be on 1175...exactly 500pts short of beating Fed's record. 400pts are up for grabs in the remaining mandatories, with an extra 150pts available at the TMC...unlikely he plays another optional this year imo (especially considering his position with Davis Cup), so, effectively, he must win the US Open and lose no more than once over Madrid, Paris and TMC. So, next to no chance. :p
