Toronto QF: G. Simon def. M. Cilic 3-6, 6-2, 6-3

Cilic played like a mug. It's a wonder he came to the QF. His first serve percentage was low, his second serve wasn't impressive esp concerning how tall he is, and he mostly pushed his groundstrokes and they landed short. It was a battle of the pushers, who can push better than the other. All in all congrats to Simon for making a good run this tourny and reaching the semis.

Cilic let Simon hang around too long and payed for it. Cilic couldn't believe he was in a third set and played crap. Simon was he's usual steady set. Congrats on 1st Master Series SF Simon! :)

Very, very bad match - ridiculous no. of UEs (Cilic: 60!) and Cilic sort of self-destructed the way Fed did on Wednesday.

Still: congrats to Simon for making it to his first MS semi-final! :yeah: :hatoff:
(There's at least a bit of comfort in the fact that Fed apparently didn't lose to a total mug ;))

Simple Simon used the simple methods and it worked to a tee.

No need to raise the game, just keep the ball in court and let the opponent self destruct. Cilic forget the net is what you are meant to hit over, not use it like a trawler.

Oh stop your hating.. You could see how exhausted physically and mentally Gilles was in this match and was defintaly pushing here.. He wasn't doing it before but it's got to the stage where he has to conserve as much energy as possible so good on him. Hope he can have a bit of a rest because the scheduling has been pretty brutal on him seeing as he's been first match on the last two days and he had a night match the day before.

Allez Gilles. GL in the semis! You can do it! :woohoo:

I can't see losing to a semifinalist as losing to a total mug... (even if I have to admit that that loss was more his own doing than to Gilles' 'brilliance' - which I think was the case today just as well as it was Wednesday)

Well that is all he needed to do. :o Im sure he'll raise his game when he plays a better player because he definatly wasn't playing like this against Fed. But  I just hope he has enough left in the tank. :)

And anyway, however much people want to call him a pusher, it's amazing how he can 1. Force the opponent to play to his pace and 2. Turn defence into attack so well and effeciently. Allez!

This was the first time for both of these two young players at this level, so of course they're going to play a nervous, messy match. Both are going to be in more Masters quarterfinals in the future, so get used to it.

Plus the first quarterfinal of the day on the men's or women's side is almost always an ho-hum blah affair.

That said, it does sound like a really ugly, really lousy match. But Simon does know how to pull through and win when the errors are flying. That's an ability a lot of other players wish they had.

Neither exactly looked full of beans out there, did they, especially at the end. Cilic started like the energizer bunny near the end of his battery life...good and then it got slower...and slower...and sloooowwer...

Then Simon just about summoned up enough energy to keep the rallies going for 2 sets and take the match.

Quite soporific. Even Lahyani got in on the act, dropping out his words with weary contemplativeness... "Advoaantage.....Siiiimon....."

Occasionally some nice shots. Best I can say about it though is that it wasn't as bad as the Murray - Wawa encounter yesterday :o

Blake or Kiefer really should slap Simon in the semis - the poor guy looks exhausted and it should be a step too far.

The match against Gasquet was particularly ugly. When he plays poorly, it's not pretty to watch with his style of game. But if you saw him for the first time one month ago, it might be a bit short to really know his game. Don't judge him on matches like the Gasquet one only.

Blue Heart24

This was a great week for Marin, but matches like this make me think he is a very stupid player.

He has much to be concerned about imo.
1.He is basically a hit or miss player only.He tries to go for a winner way too often. His tactics are poor.
2.His slice is an awful shot.
3.His on court thinking is non existing. When you play against such a player like Simon who gets everything back, you need to be patient.Today was obviously the day in which he couldnt get all those bombs in.Therefore,he should have played a bit more defensive and use some top spin.
But his shots have absolutely no spin and instead of being patient in rallies he just throwed it all away.

He needs to learn to control himself on the court and use different tactics if his A game isnt working.

And today, well,as I said,he had only one plan and that was going for it in every rally, that didnt work, and he was completely lost.

Cant be nothing more than a solid top 50 player with that.

So I was keen to see how Cilic would follow up his fairly impressive performance against Roddick but essentially missed the first two sets (although the TV was on) and only really watched the third closely. If that one was anything to go by then this was indeed one stinker of a match :o The Croat in particular showed absolutely nothing of the solid form he displayed in his previous upset - he looked and played like a pale shadow of himself. He clearly still has a lot to learn about dealing with pressure in important matches where he's not the huge underdog.

Simon didn't have to do much and, like against Federer, was able to benefit from his opponent's implosion without really doing much to set it off. So no, I am still not charmed or convinced by the Frenchman and hope to see Kiefer dispatch him efficiently tomorrow  However, I expect him to add at least one more title to his CV this month when the prestigious MTF Bandwagon Player of the Month award is announced - that is one honour I agree he deserves and has fully earned.

Poor quality match. Cilic made huge amounts of unforced errors and Simon realizing he could probably win without going for much kept making him play. I would have liked to have seen Simon get better placement and depth on his shots to make the match a bit easier in the third set because even though Cilic played extremely poorly, he was still only one break behind but in the end it was enough to get the job done.
