Soderling was very sharp in his service games with many effective 1st serves, but on the flip side, too many double faults gave Djokovic some free points. Djokovic was able to employ the drop shot a few times, one of his favorites. And because of Soldering poor reaction time, movement, and anticipation, Djokovic's drop shot had a good success rate. Although Djokovic faced some break points, Solderling was unable to capitalize. Djokovic, however, did break Solderling once and went on to win the first set.

Djokovic was a little more relaxed in the 2nd set but you could tell that he wanted to break Solderling at 3-3. Despite his aggression, Solderling's sharp serving denied Djokovic any break opportunities. At 4-4, Djokovic's desire to break Solderling was crystal clear. He took his game up several notches and finally broke Solderling and then served for the match.

Very good job. The way Djoke's playing, he's clearly the no. 1 favourite for the USO.

Toad is useless when on the opposite side of the net stands Federer, Nadal or Djokovic. The Swede can be a tough opponent for them but at the end of the match he must be a loser.

Not a very good performance by Novak but he up a notch at 4-4 in 2nd set and got the job done.

Here is one annoying. You can be moderator 200 x but you'll stay just another little hater. 'Nadal is God', 'Federer is God'...that is not annoying but we are? OK, great job, objective.

Btw, 'Djokovic fans annoy people' - said your exellence. True, we are not people, we are animals.

I'm not a hater, I'm superbly indifferent to Djokovic. If his fans want to think he's God, or God++, for beating Soderling, fair enough. I find it a tad bizarre, but whatever, don't let me stop you - and really, no need to have a cow, I wasn't trying to hate on you.

I thought he played pretty well really - he was a bit passive at times perhaps, let Soderling dictate the play sometimes but when he needed to, he turned it on and never looked in much danger.

Djokovic will be the new number 1 soon enough.
Well realistically he can't do too much until after the US Open, when he didn't really produce much form in Madrid, Paris or the Masters Cup - he could potentially add some in Cincy or the Olympics but it's going to be hard for him to make a move until the indoor season, I think.

I thought he just looked uneasy. You are right about him letting Soderling dictate play. I guess it was a good strategy, given how inconsistent Soderling is. I don't know, we will see how he does in the later rounds.

Nole is no God, he is a human being. But so are Federer and Nadal. All of them are totally human. And - I admit I didn't follow the match - the result indicates that Nole only did as much as he had to to win that match. That is nothing Godlike, but only human.

Quite ordinary match, the outcome seemed inevitable. Djokovic matches up well with these kinda ball-bashers that are athletically disadvantaged against him. His relentless consistency in exchanges and occasional flashes of brilliance sealed the deal.

Soderling couldv played better.
