When will Djokovic claim the No.2 ranking?

Now the question, when will Djokovic claim the no.2 ranking(from FEDERER). Kid is brilliant on hardcourt with the most lethal double-handed backhand on tour and the best depth of ground strokes i have ever seen from a player in the history of this sport. He also has the best movement on hardcourt i have ever seen. Amazing skills on slow/medium outdoor hard court, he was born on hard. Forget his clay, grass results- he is not made for these surfaces, yet still managed to bring his hard game onto some clay and grass events(see hamburg vs Nadal, rome fast clay, obliterating opposition in queens prior to brainfart in final vs Nadal which Djoko should have won ).

Events that djoko can get to help him gain the no.2 position. Focus djoko!!

-Firstly, defend Rogers cup title(play a good level vs Nadal in Semi)

-Cincinatti masters title- need a big win here, didn't get any points last yr so good

-win olympics

-win or atleast defend finals USOPEN

-Get some indoor titles under belt e.g. one of PAris or MAdrid (bombed out early last yr in Paris tonsilitis so this helps)

-Gotta defend Vienna.

-Thai open - win it.

-MAsters cup - better more efficient showing

-Hope Fedex continues at a reduced pace - fed can drop some points in USOPEN,Basel,MAdrid(finals),MAsters cup(winner), Cincinnati(winner) but can gain in Paris, Olympics Madrid and Stockholm if he wins

End of year rankings:
1. Nadal
2. Djokovic
3.Federer

Djokovic will get to number 2 around Madrid or Bercy.

Nadal is closer to Fed than Djoko is to Nadal.

Take it a step at a time.

Sure the AO was a great achievement for Djoko, but I'd wait a bit more before I proclaimed him top of the top.

I'd like to see him repeat the US Open Final, then It's more than safe to say Djoko is the real deal on HC.

He starts defending points now. Whole different ball game than just gaining points.

So we might as well start discussing who will be Nº3. I don't see Federer as Nº3, his giant ego wouldn't allow him so he rather pull out a demi-Henin and retires.

Your end of the year 2008 predictions are practically impossible, unless Nadal breaks his legs.

Federer still has to get to the US Open final and his form this year on HC leaves much to be desired.

He is definitely not getting anywhere close to #2 this year. It would take huge consistency every week (final or win), which he has not shown he can do yet, and a big slump from Roger and/or Rafa. I really don't see it happening.

Faker #2?
Never.

Or if Roger is indeed tired/injured and somehow loses his #2 position after TMC it is not that important, in any case he will regain #2 spot after AO 2009 and #1 position after Miami 2009.

Tough times for Fed at the momment. His match against Murray tomorrow could really affect his ranking long term if he loses. If Murray wins, Murray and Nole should be in seperate semi's and would be favourite to play each other in the final. Thats great points for one and very good points for the other.

With Murray having nothing to defend at AO, IW and Miami, Fed could find himself at No. 4 before he knows it. The kids have done good and next year they may well take control of the top 3 rankings.

That was about the scenario, not exactly. For this to happen, (1) Roger should NOT reach the semi (could well happen) - and then ALSO (1a) - either Roger wins no match at all (aka 0 points, loss 650) - then Djoko would have had to 'just' win the tournament OR (1b) - Roger wins just ONE match (happened yesterday), in this case Djoko would have had to win the tournament UNBEATEN.

Neither is going to happen. Roger will end this year as the world's #2.

Correct me if I'm wrong. :)

Djokovic proved many times that he is not playing good when he is under pressure to take that No. 2 spot. And it does not matter much cause we have 4 good players in top 4 so you can not get an easy SF (theoretically).

This was a long shot for #2. Besides, he's been playing bad for some time. He actually played well today until getting broken at 6:5 moment in the second. Total laziness in the third set. I don't know if he just didn't want to bother much or he didn't believe he could still win the match. What ever the case is, he doesn't deserve to take the #2 ranking

On a serious note, you are not far away from the truth.
I think that he will be only interested in winning GS and reaching Pete's record.
So for him it will be important to be top3-5 player, but not as much as important to win GS.

I don't count that sort of exho as "silly" - would you say Kooyong is a silly exho that the top players shouldn't play? Or any of the grass exhos before Wimbledon? I'm sure sometimes the players like a relaxed exho - they still have to practise

Silly is for special ideas like the clay/grass exho :o or playing Sampras mid season, or playing 278 exhos after the season finishes.

Okay, seriously now - though I realize I might well be making a Big Mistake here - YEP I think of any a top player attending such exho's is making a big, BIG mistake, if only to show themselves of as genuine athletes who care about their sport first and foremost. *NOT* in case there's nothing at stake, but it might just be me... there's quite al lot at stake right now, I think. ;)
