Not surprised by this, even though Bobby has been on fire lately.
Well done Somdev...he will be in the top 100 soon.

He plays Andrea Stoppini next...who has been on a good roll in the challengers recently.

That's a great win, in a match that probably should have been the final of this challenger.

Yeah, why not? ;)

I remember Somdev winning some futures last weeks and when he passed a qualifying in one of the tournies of the USA summer last year, I think.

But I didn't expect this as Bobby had some good results last weeks :p, anyway good win, Somdev :yeah:

Btw, Stoppini... the one who beat Agassi in one of his last tournaments?

Even though Somdev lost to Isner in the NCAA Final, he will have a much better career than him.

No, Somdev beat Isner in the NCAA finals. ;)

I hope they give him a wild card at the USO. Even if it is in the qualies...

It's an Austrian name but they speak a dialect of German too and there's similar weird names in Germany. My point is how weird a name is is all in the eye of the beholder.

He only lost one NCAA singles match all year (44-1 record), held the #1 ranking all season, & defended his NCAA title. He has won three futures titles (singles & doubles) this year. He won the Kennedy prize money tournament in early July (defeating Kendrick, Querrey, & Sela in the last three rounds). Now he's won five straight matches at the challenger level. Quite a winning streak.

Btw, Stoppini... the one who beat Agassi in one of his last tournaments? :confused:Stoppini defeated Agassi in the second round of Washington in 2006.

You're right, smu. He's had an amazing run, and he's an exceptional young man. I'm really rooting for him. It'd be a crime if the USTA doesn't grant him a wild card into the main draw of the Open, although I suspect he'll be fortunate to receive one into the qualies. This kid doesn't have any any huge weapons aside from his foot speed and mental toughness, but those are two pretty good ones to have, and I'm sure he'll continue to improve through his twenties. Good luck, Sommie.

Despite the good form Stoppini is in, I am not sure whether I would rate him higher than Sela, Kendrick and Malisse. Moreover, I think Reynolds vs. Devvarman was a more interesting match - on paper - than this.

Never mind, I see now that the thread title was changed and you made the comment about the match against Reynolds. I would probably agree then.

It's more like the anti-bandwagon, because this kid doesn't get any free rides, and he's making a name for himself the good old fashioned way, by earning it.

He beat Malisse 4-1 ret.

Sela or Kendrick to beat in the final. Both beatable IMO as Sela admits himself he's been playing shit in this event, and Kendrick had some struggles, too.

I think Somdev beat both Sela and Kendrick in the Kennedy Invitational, although obviously it's hard to take exhibition results seriously. Although if he beat Reynolds I don't see why he can't beat Kendrick or Sela.

Those were serious. Those were low ranked players playing in fairly high dollar exhibition. To any of those guys the $40K 1st prize was a huge payday.
