For the first time in the history of this tournament (okay, this is only the 4th year), I won't be there every day. But I'll go for qualies and see who's around to say hello to, hopefully see some good matches if they get a full draw this year. :)

Thanks. :)

Looks like there will be rain late Friday night and early Saturday morning/afternoon, which will back things up a little bit. There are only 3 courts for qualies, but one has lights for night play. I think there will be a full qualie draw this year (unlike last year), and I've already been asked to pick someone up at the airport on Friday.

Yes, Groth has withdrawn, Klein is in.

Hum, let's hope the rain is not too bad. Are there any indoor courts nearby? During the Houston Clay Court Championships I have been to the airport many times to pick up players. I have also been picked up as a player.

Frank and Peter :yeah:

Decent draw against qualifiers, especially for Peter as the last direct entry.

Frank should at least make the quarters again, and an Isner rematch would be an interesting QF. Dorsch, semis in 4 of last 5 challengers, could be trouble in that quarter, though.

Peter looks in tough if he wins his first match, but you never know.

Anyway, good luck guys

That's exactly what it was. Russell spoke to the USTA and the ATP and was able to save his PR and use a wildcard instead.

Let's see... the Fleishman/Sweeting match was shit on a stick, it was so bad. Zack broke in the very first game, then got broken back in the 2nd game, broke a few games later, served for the set at 5-4 and got broken, then lost the tiebreak. He looked mostly out of sorts and unfocused and lacking energy, but somehow he managed to do what he needed to do, put enough points together to break and then put enough points together to hold when he served for the set. He did that again for the second set and Sweeting just went downhill about midway through (but boy he can slam an overhead when he's down a set and a break like a real man). He will have to play a lot better tomorrow and Monday to make the main draw, but he knows it and I have faith that he will do it, he usually plays well in Sacramento (and we had lunch after his match and I said basically the same stuff I said here, but Zack knows I love him and he can handle it).

Widom beat up on Gehrke 6-0, 6-0. I went to the bathroom for a minute and the match was over before I got back! (Okay, I exaggerate, but you get the idea ;) ).

I was surprised the Oudsema-Rettenmaier match was only two sets, I really thought those two would be battling for hours. I think Travis was just having an out of sorts day.

Whit Livingston (local guy, we became friends last year) has probably paid his last singles match on the circuit. He lost to Brian Battistone (one of the brothers that uses a 2 handled racquet). That was a strange thing to watch.

Mike McClune lost  and I didn't get to see much of his match, but I did get to speak to him for the first time in a year and he seems to be doing okay. I think he's progressing at a steady rate and I am still optimistic that he will continue to grow as a player and do well on tour. I think he's a bit smallish in the upper body and could possibly benefit from a bit of weight lifting.

The biggest surprise of my day was seeing Taylor Dent! I had no idea that he was getting a wildcard for this tournament. I saw him out of the corner of my eye and didnt realize it was him at first, but then he turned around and I recognized him right away. HE LOOKS GREAT! He walked over while I was talking to Mike and he gave me the biggest smile which really surprised me because I havent seen him in years and I did not think he would remember me at all. I was also surprised at his current size and told him that I thought he looked 'svelte' now. He laughed and said that it wasn't the word that he would use but he has been working out a lot lately. I am quite impressed, he looks good off court and it would be good to see him come back again.

But wow, Sweeting needs to really get his head on straight. He's quickly on his way to nothing. This entire generation of decently talented Americans is hilarious, really. Between Jenkins, Sweeting, Evans, Young etc they're either terrible mentally, or don't have the required work either. They just don't have the hunger of their foreign counterparts.

Funny, I was discussing that very subject with someone today. Sometimes I wonder if it's time for the USTA to tell them all that they will lose their funding in 6 months and see what happens. I still have a lot of optimism for Mike, I know he works hard and he's willing to do the work, but I'm just not sure about the rest of them at all. They all seem to have stalled and are stuck in a serious rut. I don't understand what the big deal about Sweeting is, but maybe I just caught him on a very terrible day.

any info about the doubles...?

Yeah, they had a sign in list on the table, the draw will be made tomorrow and there will be a few teams in qualifying. Not sure who will get the wildcards, but I think Warburg/Livingston get one.

Ryan, Brendan and Donald all have serious mental issues. Scoville not to such an extent, from what I've seen, but he isn't all that solid either.

Thanks for the report, Fee :yeah: Sad to see Fleishman vs. Sweeting was such a disappointment, when it could have been such a great match.

The field here is truly amazing and a lot of players have a shot at the title. It's mostly the Aussies, bar Ball, who look like the weak ones here.

Dent isn't lucky with Dorsch as a 1R opponent, as Dorsch will not let him get much rhythm. He'll really try to dictate play. He'd have been better off with someone who hits less hard, IMO.

Bogomolov Jr. - Kim can be a great match. It was a very, very good match-up at Wimbledon qualies this year.

Thanks for the report update...

It seems like you know a lot of players. Will you do me a favor? If you see Vince Spadea there go up to him and say "Someone wanted me to tell you 'Spadea, made in Cash.'" He will know what it means will you post back on here his reactions? Thanks a bunch.

Yes I do, especially at this event, but no, I will not go up to Spadea willingly under any circumstance.

Such a great draw Spadea v Jenkins two rappers.

I've never heard Scoey rap, but if you have I'm sure that was an experience.

Today will probably be my last day at the tournament since I'll be at work all week. I need to scoot or I'll miss Zack's match.

Nice Md appearance for Brian B.

He still has to win another match to make the main draw, the final round is tomorrow. Zack won, he'll play Jesse Witten. I think Oudsema won, Mamit won, Widom was still playing when I left (but he was down a set and suffering from a bad cold at that point). I didn't hear who won the Healey-Martin match, and I think I'm missing one more result. I wasnt there very long today, caught the end of Zack's match, had lunch with him again, and decided to call it a day. I'll go back for semi's if anyone I know is playing next weekend.

Hey. Would you like to say whose game/current form impressed you most? Thank you

To be honest, I'd have to say Odesnik looked the best. I wasn't expecting much since he's so small, but he was probably the most consistent. I only went for one day, so I can only comment on those whom I saw play :)

Oh and I left before the Kevin Kim match started, and that was around 4:30, so they started pretty late. The evening session was supposed to start at 5:15. I think the organizers just overbooked the second court so they couldn't finish all the matches before the evening session started. They had about twice as many matches scheduled on the second court than on Center court.

As I explained last year, in the US, the USTA sponsors MANY tournaments for men and women from the ATP/WTA level down to the Futures level. Live scoring is not a priority for them at the Challenger and Future level, so they leave it up to the tournaments to find the money to provide it (after they find prize money, food money, money to pay the officials, etc). There is only one tournament that I know of that does it, the Dallas Challenger, which also provides live streaming of video from a fixed camera.

For those of you who follow Challengers more than I do, could you please tell me which Challengers outside the US have live scoring?

For those of you who follow Challengers more than I do, could you please tell me which Challengers outside the US have live scoring?

From my experience most challengers in Europe have a website where scores are at least updated a few times per day, many also have live-scoring. It is also common for certain European betting companies to provide live scores for challenger matches (even for tournaments that don't have a good website of their own). However there are still challengers in Europe where the website isn't updated and it's hard to get results (notably Spanish clay challengers). Most challengers in South America seem to have a website with updated results.

In the US the typical set-up seems to be that there is some kind of website, often related to a club, with details of the challenger and sponsors but it is not updated with results as the challenger progresses other than standard links to the ATP OOP and draw. Earlier this year there seemed to be a trend for a while of US challenger officials making multiple updates per day to the drawsheet on the ATP site (as an alternative for updates on a website) but that practice isn't as common recently.

Sorry about that guy, but Europe is actually out from the Caves Age for such a long time...(there are also livescores in Tashkent Uzbekhistan ;) )

And as we are not addicted to the Green God here, the Challenger Officials spare some money for the pleasure of the fan with .. a livescore....or at least they try...

As far as we are not too affected by the Subprime Crisis, they could keep on doing that...

So I won't show off too much with it !

He is, but I think Jesse's progress is stalling and his ranking is sliding, while he's got so much talent. There's no need for him to lose with such a scoreline.

Sutter Lawn is a very small club, it's basically a very large 2 story house with 5 tennis courts and a swimming pool. The email on the website is probably only looked at once a week by a volunteer, and that volunteer is probably busy working at the tournament (in addition to his regular job) this week. Keith Crossland is the USTA official in charge this week, but I've never seen it take him this long to post updated draws. I worked at this event for the first two years, and I can tell you that having info posted on their website is not a priority for them, they don't see it as part of their target audience.

Young def. Odesnik 4-6 6-3 4-1 ret.
Kendrick def. Russell 6-4 3-6 6-3

Good result for Young who seemed to have lost his way for a long time. He scraped by in some matches this week but it is a little surprising that he actually won those tight ones.

Odesnik seems to be playing with some injury concern most of the time...hard to get really good results in that condition.

Very good return to form for Russell, to be honest I didn't really expect him to return succesfully after his drop in the rankings and injury, but the results this week look solid enough.

I don't know how anyone could have played in the wind we had in Sacramento this week. For the last two days we've had gusts up to 40mph.

And that is the main reason I decided to stay home this weekend, I just cannot deal with wind at all (yeah, I am a wimp).

Good win for Donald, hope he can finish out the season with some more good results.
