So, let's forget clay and grass (and then clay again!) and move onto the USO Series and the Summer Hard Court season, my favorite part of the season (mainly because I don't have to wake up at 5:00 AM to catch live tennis. ) Here's his schedule:

July 21: Canada Masters (2007 result: 2nd round)
July 28: Cincy Masters (2007 result: 2nd round)
???
Aug 25: US Open (2007 result: 2nd round)

--------------

I know he's not playing the Olympics, but is there any word that he might play LA or DC instead? He's not defending anything really and could rack up some major points.

I was thinking the same thing. With half the tour in Bejing he's not going to get a better chance. But he is going to have to go back to being aggresive grass court Richie instead of passive clay court Richie who stands in outer space to hit the ball or it won't matter who he plays.

Not to start rumors but someone on GM posted that they heard the ESPN commentators during WImbledon say that Richard was going to have corrective knee surgery for the cyst during the US hardcourt season. Has anyone heard anything about that? I think someone heard incorrectly or the goofy commentators on ESPN got things confused.

I'll answer my own question - just read his comments after the final and he said he was hoping to play well in CIncy and Toronto; they are Masters and "it's importnat to me." We hope you play well too Richie. :)

The official entry deadlines for both tourneys have expired and he is not the entry lists. It seems more likely that some tough prepratory weeks will be on the agenda. :p

 I hope he can have a good summer season. Obviously he doesn't have much to defend so there isn't much pressure on him. It seems weird to have such a big gap between the masters and the US Open. Maybe he'll look into getting a WC for one of the tournaments in between? If not, 4 weeks of hardcore training will do him good I suppose. :)

Playing one of those tournaments would be a good way to pick up some points while most of the "good" players are at the Olympics. Bet he goes back to France cuz I don't think he's crazy about the U.S. and that is a very long time to be on the road with no tournaments. But he really needs to get acclimated to the heat/humidity for the USO and a few weeks sweating it out in the US would get him in tough shape. And I'd be more than happy to "entertain" him during those weeks he is away from home ;)

Looking forward to another Toronto like 2006. Anyone know when he is getting to Toronto?

07-16-2008, 12:15 AM
I think Washington DC would be a good option because he'll get a week off after Cincy and have a week off before the USO. So he won't have to spend too much time in the US when he isn't playing, it would be much more worthwhile than going back to France. But we'll see, as you said he'll probably spend a bit of time at home. I still can't believe he isn't playing the Olympics. :awww:

I have no idea but hopefully soon! ;)

The US/Canadian Summer season is Richie's chance to pick up some ranking points as he has only 45 points to defend..... he's is going to need to have a few wins to protect his ranking...

He's is going to be in trouble if he can't pick up some points, In October/November Richie has 680 points to defend from Toyko, Mumbai, Madrid, Paris & Shanghai

So he will need some results to stop the slide down the rankings to have a decent ranking for the start of the season in Australia

Allez Richie

IF he gets to Ferrer, and that's always a question mark, I really think the "new and improved" RIchie has a good chance against Ferrer. I never understood how Richard got wiped out by Ferrer on hard courts last year but Ferrer is not playing the way he was last year and the real Richard is SOOOO much better a hard court player than Ferrer. Unfortunately I think Richard has a mental block against Ferrer but maybe the "new and improved" RIchie can deal with that too.

As for doubles, I always thought that Richard and Mahut would make a really good doubles team but not so the few times they played together. Well I always look forward to Richard beating the #%&$ out of Murray so a doubles victory would be fun even if it doesn't come close to making up for Wimbly.

Hopefully opening round jitters are over with and he has some confidence to play 2 GOOD sets of tennis in a row. I missed the game where he broke in the 3rd, my computer froze at just the wrong time. DId he play well or did Llodra give it to him?

The good thing that I am liking about the way Richie is playing at the moment is he is hanging tough in these matches despite playing below the level we know he can play, I still think it's early days with the new coaching arrangments with peyre & it's the transition phase to bigger & brighter things on the horizon!
A few months ago these are the sort of matches he would have never won.. A bit like Monte Carlo & Rome. He is playing rather patchy at the moment... but watch out when he brings it all together:)

It will be interesting with these tournements he is playing, A lot of the big guns are playing with the tight schedule with the Olympics to follow & then back for the US Open
I sort of am expecting some big upsets in the next few weeks as most will be thinking about Bejing, Let's hope Richie may be able to send a few of the names packing & build up his confidence for a good crack at the US Open! or to progress well into the draw

If Richie can show some form from Wimbledon like he was playing against Murray (Well for the first few hours until the crowd factor & darkness took over!) soon....His results will speak louder then word & send the Richie knockers packing! & the future is looking so promising & hopeful:)

When Richie is playing attacking & on his game..... It gives me goose bumps watching;)...... He is a freak when he plays like that & the winners keep coming that leaves his opponent's with the look of envy!

Just my little say on how I'm seeing things at the moment

That's exactly what I thought yesterday when I watched the first set of Ferrer vers. Ginepri. Ferrer hit 4 (!) winners and 15 errors, but won the set comfortably. However, I did not find he was nearly as aggressive as he was in Shanghai.

Richie just should repea this second set performance against Kundryatsev, 94 % points won on first serve, when 67% found their target. That looks promising. :)

Ferrer is weak in only one department which is serve... something Richard is doing well for the most part (certainly top 15), but ground game, Ferrer has huge advantage because he plays faster than Richard and that is what bothers him. Ferrer also has great return game and Richard can't get many cheap points, which he likes and relies upon a lot.

I watched Ferrer's first set against GInepri yesterday, and it just confirmed why I don't like his game. He hit 4 (!) winners and 15 UEs and still won the set comfortably. That is not the tennis I want to see, sorry David.

On the optimistic side, though, he did not seem to me as aggressive as he was in Shanghai, more relying on his capibility to bring the ball back. But no doubt, Richie will have to be very good to beat him. And I just love imagining what it will mean to him if he does. :)

There is no question Ferrer is not in the same form as he was late last season. But still, his game can bother Richard. I think Richard will have to serve really well and step in on returns of second serves to try to dictate those points in 2-3 shots. If he will engage in long rallies, he will not come out winner.

Ferrer is not playing as well as he was at the end of last year. The best thing about Ferrer's game was his mental toughness but I've seen more than a few matches this year where he looked pretty weak in that department. I just hope Richard is confident and gives Ferrer a really tough match - a win would be better of course but to just not get wiped off the court by Ferrer would be a big improvement.

Hope he is watching Simon who is about to take a spot in the quarters and Cilic who just won the first set over Roddick. Time for another TOp 10 player to go down - ALLEZ RIchie!!!

Ferrer played better on hard courts last year.

I think Richie has all the chances to beat him (he has to serve well, cause Ferrer's weapon is returning, right?).

I hope that when he goes to the court, he won't be recalling the last two matches against Ferrer :o

How frustrating for them (and we all know how well Richie plays when things don't go just right :tape:) At this rate Rafa and Andreev, the night match, will be finished before Richie and Ferrer even get on the grandstand court - maybe they will get to play on Center Court?

I was afraid of this when I saw the schedule. Wawrinka loves three-setters and Kiefer/Davydenko was also quite obvious to last long. The match is very tight, many games going to deuce. The match is quite good, though. I just hope there will be no more rain.:tape:

O.K. It's 5-4 with Davy serving to stay in the match - as much as I don't want Keifer to win (and that's a LOT). Hope he breaks or this could go on for a few more games.

OMG! HE took a set from Ferrer, serving it out 6-3! I know not to get too excited but if he keeps this intensity and focus he can take him down. He is LOOKING GOOOOOD! But that is a HUGE IF. Ferrer looks annoyed, he keeps changing rackets, took off his bandana for a hat but I think he is just surprised at Richard giving him a fight.

O.K.Richie NO DIPS!!! OOPS Ferrer wins first game of second set at LOVE. Richie you know Ferrer will not quit so keep tough!!!!

Ferrer has a trainer out at 2-1 Ferrer. Although he didn't look to be hurting during the last game he served, he did come up limping a bit after one shot in that game. Richie - stay focused and don't let this mess with your head!!

Richie looks to me to be starting to retreat a bit too far back behind the baseline but it might have something to do with Ferrers shots?

Wow, wow, wow, stunning, stunning, stunning. I watched the match, and boy was he impressive. He just made every shot in the book look easy. Never did he get down on himself. It was incredible to see just how much he was enjoying himself. Although occasionally he got pinned back behind the baseline, his net play was sublime. At one point in the match, he had won 14/14 points at the net. His serve was impressive. Even his forehand wasn't too shabby. He was on fire.

If Richie brings the same fire and motivation to his match against Nadal, I think we could be in for a treat. I'm not saying he will beat him, but you just never know. Hope he gets plenty of rest for tonight.

;)Wow.... Richie was on a mission;) today, I can't fault a single part of it.....
He played his attacking game with percision, Kept strong mentally when Ferrer broke him, didn't go into his shell & start playing like he had blown the chance & let his nerves get the better of him.

What really impressed me is all the pumping up he did, with his come' on's
He really wasn't going to let this match slip through his fingers,

I'm not getting carried away with the chances against Rafa...... but if the same Richie steps on the court against Rafa.... What a treat we are going to be in for;)

If he can control his nerves & play with agression & precision like today.....
He sure can beat Rafa...& whoever is on the other side of the net....

Day's like today make the ride in following Richie so much more pleasent......:)
It's a Big Dipper Roller Coaster with him though...... but I wouldnt change a thing:D
It's makes you admire his talent & his game so much......
If only it was like this each time Richie stepped out on the court & turn into the hunted & feared by the other players....This could be his moment fingers crossed

What also made the day so enjoyable was that at least Murray was beaten in the doubles..... Pitty It wasn't in the singles:mad: & Richie was on the other side of the net;)

Can anyone tell me what the match point was like?

Amazing point! there was a normal rally that lasted a few balls and David dragged Richie back and forth and finally made a pretty nice approach towards Richie's forhand and he then made a stretched-out pass attempt and the ball somehow hit the net cord and trickled over the net. David then had to sprint to the ball (which had drifted off of the court) and push it deep while leaving the right side of the court completely open for a beautiful backhand winner...BUT, instead richie made the beautiful backhand pass up the line behind Ferrer (as he began sprinting to the open court in attempt to cut off the crosscourt pass). Richie then layed down for a second in celebration of his first Ferrer win. Hope that made sense.

I'm on such a high after seeing the way Richie played today..... even if he had lost to Ferrer, I would be so proud of the way he approached the match.....

I have said on a few occassions that IMHO I think we won't see the best of Richie till he is around 25-26 when it all comes together

Now wouldn't the Rafa scalp look good on Richies bio, it would sit quiet nicely along side his win over Roger at Monte Carlo in 05

Wouldn't it be good for Richie to continue his dream run at the Rogers Cup & go one better then his run in 2006

That's the "Peyre touch" ;)

I think Peyre has encouraged Richard to show his emotions (the positives ones) on the court which is great to see and keeps him pumped.

Another Peyre touch that I think is beginning to have an impact on his game is the fitness training. Although the match was just 3 and 3, it was a very physical 3 and 3 and Richard looked as strong at the end as in the beginning (he was sucking some wind after a few points but didn't fade). Sometimes I think his dip midway through a match was due to fatigue - not last night.

It looks like the results of changing his coaching to Peyre is paying dividends

It's good to see Richie pumped up on the court, It can only help him

I'm sure many of the other players regard our Richie as a little "Fragile" in the match temprement area & often goes missing when he need to step up.....

A pumped up, buffed up Richie does it for me..... Can't wait to see if we get to see a buffed bronzed Richie

Wow, that was certainly worth staying up half the night for (not easy to do when I only got home at 4am the same morning)!

He was playing inspiring tennis, the intensity was just great and for the first time in absolutely ages (if ever) the moment I saw him step out onto court I just knew that he would win. He just had that look about him, really came out fighting and most importantly aggressive (:hearts: MP) :yeah: Of course against Rafa (especially currently) is a whole different level still but he has nothing to lose, so i just hope he brings last night's attitude and aggression and really goes for his shots. Allez Richi, time for the pièce de résistance! :bounce:

Why does it have to be last match? :( I just can't wait any longer...need to calm down (don't worry I'm still realistic about his chances tonight but I can dream!).

I never thought that RIchard would loose his status as #1 Frenchman to Simon (others perhaps yes, but Simon??) but if Simon gets to the finals and Richie looses to Nadal (both quite possible) - I think Simon will move above RIchie in the rankings?? Not that it really matters, the important thing is that Richard is without a doubt on the way up and if he stays injury free and confident in his ability, "proper order" will be restored by the end of the year.

He shouldn't be too relaxed. You know what kind of people Nadal is.

43% first serves?! sort it out!
Yes, I noticed by the TB how few he was making :o Luckily Gasquet was able to pull out this opening set, which I really felt he had to in order to stand a decent chance of beating Nadal in a best of three match, but he'll almost certainly have to improve that % and get a few more easy points to go all the way...

freeandlonely
07-26-2008, 03:51 AM

Can he keep that's the only question, let's hope he can.:)

Me neither. But I really enjoyed watching Richie taking the initiative and attack Piggy's serve. I couldn't believe he was actually stepping into the baseline to return serve. (!!!) And he never gave up even when the odds were against him.

tennis lover
07-26-2008, 04:05 AM
ok, time to regroup. He broke back twice in the first set (and I really wasn't expecting it when Rafa served for the set), he can do it again.

Rumour
07-26-2008, 04:07 AM
Twice he was down a break in the first set and he still ended up winning it, but Gasquet had better stop the rot in this service game or it will be a different story in the second :armed: So far so good at 30-0... and he holds with a flashy volley :)
