A New Low For Aussie Men's Tennis?

There are four tour-level events being played this week - the most I can ever remember being played in one week. Australia has one solitary main draw entrant...a 33 year-old journeyman playing probably his last year on tour. He lost first round to a wildcard ranked outside the top 300 in the weakest field seen in a tour event for many years.

My question is: is this the most pitiful week ever in Australian men's tennis?

One word. Yes.

It will take a while for our juniors/young players to come through but the likes of Carsten Ball, Samuel Groth, Nick Lindahl, Brydan Klein, Greg Jones and Bernard Tomic all look like big prospects and could take us out of this ridiculous slump we are in.

I think that's the thing that really bothers me. We're reduced to getting excited about guys who are, at best top 100 prospects, maybe top 50 (Tomic aside). I can't see any of those guys really doing much better than that.

10 or 15 years ago we had guys like Stoltenberg, Cahill, Masur, Fromberg, Draper and Ilie all in the top 50 and guys like Morgan and Stolle didn't even make Davis Cup teams despite being top 100. Now we're reduced to seriously looking at guys ranked 150 as potential Davis Cuppers. We only have one player with a ranking high enough to get direct entry into even run of the mill tour events and a handful of guys bumming around in Challengers.

I've lost count the amount of times I've spat the dummy and said something like this but really I think we are on a slight upward curve at this point. Very slight.

I agree with Consigliere. We must try to remain positive. With a bunch of our players ranked at around the same stage they seem to be pushing each other to reach greater heights.

At least we have more depth at the 200-400 range now then over the last 5 - 6 years.

Players like Klein and Tomic are top 50 prospects, Groth, Lindahl and Coelhlo/Jones possible top 100 candidates...
