VAMOS!

Beck could only win that many games because of his serve.

Nadal had no trouble at all on his serve.Didn`t face one BP,no game went to deuce. All in all a solid victory for him

He had trouble breaking Beck's serve? Beck? A nobody? What's he going to do against better opposition? Win 7-5 7-5 7-6(5).. Comfortable, but no where near the level of Federer.

Good match to start the tournament. I bet he's disappointed in himself for not taking advantage of those bp's in the 3rd set, but Beck served his way out of jail those times.

As for Beck, with that serve and what ground strokes I saw, he could be a good little player. That is, if he gets over that seemingly severe aversion to the net. I thought the net had grown teeth in the first two sets the way he was avoiding it. Did he get caught in the net as a child and therefore scarring him for life or something? He came in more in the 3rd, and had more success, although it didn't matter in the end.

Rafa served very well, and his UE's were few and far between. He'll need to keep that up against Gulbis, and he'll need to pick up his return game a few notches. Should be a good match.

When is Rafa going to pose nude?

Moya, Feliciano, Robredo and Verdasco have all posed nude.

Time for Rafa to show us his "famous ass" like the other Spaniards have :D

It was a 1st round match, no signification at all what will happen in the next rounds. How many more times does Nadal have to prove that he only gets better with each match?

I see noone in his draw who can really trouble him in a best of 5 match on grass. Rafa has already shown his abilities in the last years, beside this he has improved. I would be more than surprised not to see him in the final.

Not as easy as i expected for a 1st round match. Beck's body serve gave Rafa some trouble.

Rafa's too uptight. He's trying to be seen as a serious top player. Unlike the lesser spaniards who do't mind getting their arses out.

Good match - or should I say Good Serving? From both players. Difference is that Beck was barely capable of doing anything else, while Rafa... yes, he has improved again. 17 aces... nice. Very good slicing as well.
Unless he trips over a banana, he's a lock-in for at least the semifinal. :yeah:

I could well do with a lot less fanboying/bandwagoning by the commentators, though. Irritating to say the least. I mean, last time I checked, there's still this guy around with 60+ victories up his sleeve, so... :(

[FANGIRL MODE] Lovely haircut, Raf! Hopefully this will become a Wimbly Tradition. But, eh... those baggy shorts! looks like my late granny's underwear... :help:[/FANGIRL MODE]

Beck played well, nice bh and serve.

I can see that... Serve to Nadal's body, kick serve ... More powerful serve from him by average even though nadal has higher aces

one ace away from his record against agassi two years ago, although of course by then Agassi had as mobility as a plant.

Beck is decent on grass so beating hmi straight sets is a good win Rafa.

I think this is a good win but can't help but feel it should've been easier. But it doesn't matter. It's expected he'll grow in the tournament anyways. http://www.fanforum.com/images/smilies/wiggle.gif

Both played pretty well. Beck almost squeezed out the third but Rafa was just too tough. Gulbis is next.

Karin,

Conventional wisdom is that Rafa is going to win Wimby even with Roger across the net. That he's in Roger's head too much at this point.

Hmmm....well I guess you missed the 60% of the time when they did go in.

Anyway, pretty good first round match. He always sucks first round, so it was a good performance for him. Good serving, terrible return of serve. At least 1 of his two biggest trouble areas has improved.

17 aces??? We're talking about Rafa here, right? :)
Did he even hit that many aces in the entire year 2005?

I was trying to follow the match in my car so I went looking for the BBC World service and they were indeed following the match but...they ended up talking about something slightly embarrassing Michael Stich said to Ivanovic :o and a lady who works for some magazine was a guest to talk about fashion in Wimbly (Sharapova= top marks/Federer=stylish/Rafa=sexy).

[FANGIRL MODE] Lovely haircut, Raf! Hopefully this will become a Wimbly Tradition. But, eh... those baggy shorts! looks like my late granny's underwear... :help:[/FANGIRL MODE]
A Fedal fan like yourself will be happy to notice how those shorts go well together with Fed's grandpa cardigan. :ras: :p

 - difference is that that cardigan at least is the right size ;). Raf's shorts looked like the same rubbish design (design? wot design?) he wore during 2006... too baggy...

"Nadal has won 11 of 16 TB's this year"

Boris "So they both have losing records this year"

His english is getting better and better based on the quick post-match interview.
His worst part is the pronounciation, regarding his vocabulary he is really fine.

I see noone in his draw who can really trouble him in a best of 5 match on grass. Rafa has already shown his abilities in the last years, beside this he has improved. I would be more than surprised not to see him in the final.
I think that Gulbis and possibly Kiefer are rather good opponents for the 2nd or 3rd round. I haven't seen Gulbis on grass yet, but I would think his serve and flat shots could be dangerous for Nadal. If Nadal goes through Gulbis and Kiefer without troubles or even losing a set, I would rate this quite high.

Maths was not Boris strong point

"Nadal has won 11 of 16 TB's this year"

Boris "So they both have losing records this year"

:o
:haha: I heard this as well. He was probably thinking of a 11-16 record and not 11 OF 16. And none of the other commentators dared to correct him... :o

Rafa quite shaky on returns in the first set, but he got into it very quickly. I think he will be improving every match and Ernests will be suitable test for him.

Good performance and good victory from Nadal. The BH that could do nothing but trade back and forth with Soda last year is now a weapon and the serve and slice are much improved. I don't think Nadal is invincible on this surface but he is going to be very, very difficult to defeat.
