Wimbledon R1: Hewitt def. Haase 6-7 6-3 6-3 6-7 6-2

06-23-2008, 05:33 PM
Haase is great when he's on. Too inconsistent to beat Hewitt though.

06-23-2008, 05:34 PM
4 and 1 in the tiebreaks if im not mistaken.

haase looked tired near the end. both physically and mentally. vintage hewitt 5-setter

06-23-2008, 05:35 PM
Hewitt, don't this any more to me. 2 TBs.

06-23-2008, 05:36 PM
expected one

06-23-2008, 05:36 PM
:( to bad he had two chances to break early in the fifth, the first one he wanted a return winner and the second he didnt want to make a mistake and played bad. Then a sloppy game with 2 dfs and a amazing passing by lleyton. could have been a win and possible round 3

06-23-2008, 05:36 PM
what an entertaining match! some of the shots they pulled off!:worship: haase is so fearless but too many UEs.

good luck hewitt

06-23-2008, 05:37 PM
Good match for Haase, not consistent enough to be able to defeat Hewitt today but still a good match:yeah:

06-23-2008, 05:37 PM
If this Australian guy knew how to play tie-breaks he could be a great player ;)

P.S. That pass for the break... :worship:

hewitt is the worst tiebreak player in the world. something like 1-9 this year. only win v dennis istomin

06-23-2008, 05:38 PM
Well done Lleyton! :yeah:

But damn, he really missed some incredible chances he should not have missed when he's truly on. I watched a few games of the 2nd set and he played the wrong ball a few times and let Haase win some great points which he should not have won.

At the end I'm glad he made it through :)

06-23-2008, 05:39 PM
did it the hard way , but with style.

Yeah I'm not sure what his record is since RG 2007 but it's been his biggest problem.

06-23-2008, 05:39 PM
hewitt and tiebreaks :o

haase played well in parts though, but lleyton was able to step it up in the fifth. Good win lleyton, might screw his hip though.

Did ESPN2 show this match?

What a wonderful match. Loved it. Mh...Haase looks a lot like van Nistelrooy

Fully agree.
Robin :( Hewitt's been playing tie-breaks awful for a long time.

06-23-2008, 05:49 PM
Did ESPN2 show this match?

They showed large parts of it. They didn't stick with any one match today, not even Fed or Serena.

Did ESPN2 show this match?

Yeah they showed a lot of it. They played the first set and the last set and some of the middle. I was really happy they did. This was a great match. Really entertaining points. Haase played some good tennis at times but missed his chances in the fifth. Still a good showing from him.

I'm hoping for a Hewitt/Gonzo. I don't think that's too much to ask for. Good luck Lleyton! :)

Lleyton is so rubbish in TB's its not even funny

players just tee off on him

but never doubted the big fighter he is and hopefully he can get a few more wins here now :yeah:

loved the abuse he was giving that line judge for always foot faulting him - least he wasnt playing James Blake this time ;)

06-23-2008, 06:51 PM
Haase looks a lot like van Nistelrooy

I thought it was just me. Well done Lleyton.

Anyway, Hewitt TB's in 2007-2008

Istomin-AO 2008
Meltzer-Las Vegas

Seppi x2 -Rotterdam
Baghdatis-AO 2008
Guccione x2- Sidney
Karlovic x2 - Tokyo
Federer - Cincy
Djokovic x3- Wimbledon

That's 8:21 ratio in 2007-2008.

This was on 31 of March 2008. With this 2 he is 8:23 in TB in 2007/2008.

Ahh I wanted Hewitt to lose - I hate him.

06-23-2008, 09:48 PM
Well then HA HA

06-23-2008, 10:00 PM
Another five set classic win for Lleyton. :bigclap:

I love it when he busts out the lawnmower.

The 5 set maestro strikes again. :worship:

06-23-2008, 11:09 PM

Great to see him battling through out there :D

06-23-2008, 11:17 PM

06-23-2008, 11:24 PM
Come Oooonnnnn...!!!

OoooooHH! Lleyton's causing my premature gray hairs! He coulda won in straight sets if he had capitalized on one of his THREE break points in set 1 and just avoided that tiebreak in the first place. His tie break losses today are a combo of his weak serve and Hasse's big serving today. I got most of the match on DVR from the ESPN Interactive channel, and the last set from ESPN2. Can't wait to digest the whole thing!

I watched the whole match and it was pure entertainment and suspense throughout. Haase is a really exciting player to watch with the "no fear" attitude, going for his shots but lacks consistency. His forehands were quite wild at the beginning of the first set, but he got them under control as the match progressed. The backhand is his forte, and the winners on that side were a joy to watch, particularly those down the line. He couldn't make any real inroads in Hewitt's serve, going for aggressive returns which sometimes worked, but he wasn't patient enough to capitalise on 0-30 or 15-30 opportunities. In fact, his only break of serve came in 3rd set when Hewitt was double break up and serving for the set. Hewitt was the more solid player and even though it went to 5 sets, he always looked like he was going to pull off the win. Well done to both.

Haase's forehand on the stretch is pathetic but his backhand is a very nice shot. Had something like 40 winners and 17 UEs in the first set and a half. Hewitt just grinded out the win like he usually does.

06-24-2008, 08:17 AM
Great match. For someone with such an amazing record in close matches (5-setters), Hewitt sure does have a terrible TB record.

Proportionally, does anyone have as many 5-setters as Hewitt?? I swear he always gets into these epic battles. Being a Hewitt fan is never boring :)

06-24-2008, 08:28 AM
Great win for Hewitt.

06-24-2008, 10:32 AM
I am not sure Hewitt can do any damage this year. His movement was far from his best and he didn't run on many balls (he would have done it in the past). Either he was trying to preserve energy for later matches, or the hip injury is still bothering him.
