Dangerous floaters for Wimbledon

We had a thread for RG about potential dangerous floaters (unseeded) who might go deep in the draw.

Out of all the non-seeded players, I think Mario Ancic fits the bill, and Haas if fit.

Who do you say?

Ancic of course, and Soderling particulary. Gulbis also, but I am not sure how mentally he is ready. RG was quite good for him , so maybe he is mentally empty at the moment.
Some big server could emerge out of nowhere and make it through the first two rounds.

It is bad for the tournament but I cannot see any floater doing well here. Ancic and Mahut would be dangerous but are not in form, Gulbis cannot move on the stuff yet. He might do the best but it is draw dependent. That leaves Soderling but I am sure he will find a way to crap out early when nobody expects him.

There'll be plenty of floaters capable of 2nd week appearances especially when Sod's Law puts Ferrer into Davydenko's quarter of the draw.

Ancic, Fish, Ginepri, Gulbis, Soderling and Tipsarevic come to mind. I don't think Safin is capable of going on a run of more than one or two wins against top 100 players these days. Mahut hasn't proved himself in best-of-5 set matches yet.

Depends how we define "dangerous floater". None of them are capable of beating one of the top 3 (or at least I don't see it), but one of the quarters is likely going to be weak (unless Roddick ends up there). Plenty of opportunity for Qf or even SF run by someone... I am hoping Gulbis can do it, but it's obviously draw dependent...

I mean that you should consider Rafa much bigger favourite for Wimbly than Faker.
I would love the Faker to get some floater in the first round. Robin , Ancic or Mahut would be ideal.

Well, I'm not talking about favourites here. I just think Federer, Nadal and Nole are better than the rest at GS-level, i.e. best-of-5, right now. So it seems unlikely to me that one of them will not reach the semis. Cannot imagine Novak losing early to the guys you mentioned, and I'm not a fan of him. But we'll se...

With a few of the obvious choices listed, I'll throw in a real dark horse to win a few rounds. I follow and write on the challenger circuit several times a year, and there's a qualifier from South Africa named Izak van der Merwe that I think has the game and draw to at least win a few rounds. He has a big serve, and hits very large ground strokes. He rolled through qualies to make the main draw this year. The funny thing about it is that the first time I saw him play, I thought that he would be ideally suited for grass. He gets GGL in the first round (not exactly a clay monster), and the seed in his section would be Almagro in the 2nd round (who has never won a match at Wimbledon). In my opinion, the South African is the favourite to advance to the 3rd round. Good luck to everyone's dark horses...:wavey:

I'd go with Marin Cilic this time.

I think he has a pretty good chance to make the QF by getting through this session:

14. Mathieu vs Hernandez
Chardy vs Gil
Roger-Vasselin vs Cilic
Odesnik vs 24. Nieminen

26. Ljubicic vs Melzer
Levine vs Young
Bjorkman vs Clement
Becker vs 4. Davydenko

didn't chardy defeat nalbandian at RG.
I think Cillic should be having some tough time agaist him.

I can't wait for ljubicic davydenko part 2.

Only one problem - Cilic is a useless tennis player.

One of the shits I leave in the Wimbledon toilets will be a very dangerous floater, for sure.

Compared to 90% of the clowns on the ATP he is a great player.

Mario Ancic is the only unseeded player with a serious chance of getting into the second week.

I think that if he can get past Ferrer in the 3rd round he'll make the quarter finals. And if he does his ranking will move up to about #27 after Wimbledon.

P.S. Why didn't Ancic player the Australian Open this year? I can't remember.

stomach virus.

yea he's the only dangerous floater and i wouldnt be surprised if he shows llodra the fast way out. altough llodra is not in bad shame himself (unless his injury resurfaces).

i hope that match will be televised.

Van Der Merwe is a dangerous floater in this part of draw and with a little luck in third round he can beat Blake in the third round and reach R16 :

ALMAGRO, Nicolas ESP [19] v GRANOLLERS-PUJOL, Marcel ESP
GARCIA-LOPEZ, Guillermo ESP v VAN DER MERWE, Izak RSA (Q)
VENTURA, Santiago ESP v SCHUETTLER, Rainer GER
ROCHUS, Christophe BEL (Q) v BLAKE, James USA [9]

No doubt Van Der Merwe has a good draw and he can win one or two rounds, but he's a futures level player and his game must have serious shortcomings, otherwise he would have achieved more at the challenger level.
