OK guys - the Wimbledon seedings are now out, - so I hoped it would be OK to start a thread for my home Grand Slam :)

Wimby is the only tournament that does not seed the players according to the ATP ranking system - they have their own "grass court rankings" - but Nole has not been affected by this, and is still Number 3 seed.

Wimby is not my favourite tournament and I don't go there so often despite being so close to home - but I will be cheering on Nole when I can.

Why Novak Djokovic and Maria Sharapova will be this year's Wimbledon aces
June 18th 2008

Over the past 10 years, as inevitable changes in the surface have slowed down play, baseliners have been more and more successful at Wimbledon. Although net play is still important in winning matches, a solid baseline tactic is a more dependable skill to have.

Not long ago, previous champions at Wimbledon won more points at the net than from the baseline. Serve-and-volleyers like Pete Sampras, Goran Ivanisevic and Martina Navratilova to name but a few were clear favorites to bring home the trophy. But the serve-and-volley experts faded and were replaced by the all-court players of today’s game. Not only at Wimbledon but also on the slow, rubbery court of the Australian Open, the fast and punishing hard court of the US Open and the dirt at Roland Garros.

Perhaps there is nobody who exhibits this kind of play better than Roger Federer, current and four-time Wimbledon champion. The world No1 had a five-set scare during last year's final with Rafael Nadal, the closest anyone has come to ending his Wimbledon dominance.

On the women’s circuit there is no obvious favorite. The more the game changes the more variety of names we see challenging, from the double-handed play of Marion Bartoli of France - which earned her a runner-up plate in 2007 - to the ball-bashing game of Maria Sharapova making her the surprising 2004 winner. Then there was Justine Henin, who possesses mobility, brilliant shot selections and a skilled net player, but still could not win on grass. Her best performance was way back in 2001, when she was beaten by Venus Williams.

Regarded as the biggest tennis tournament in the world and the only Grand Slam that is still played on grass, Wimbledon produces thrilling matches, unexpected champions and orchestrated dramas that we can re-live years after the first ball was served. With all these uncertainties surrounding the grass at the All England Club, here is my fearless forecast of who will do what at the most coveted event of the year...

David Nalbandian - Quarter-final: He was a finalist in 2002 but the extra pounds that travel with him may prevent him from reaching his goals. Has a smooth, well-rounded game and a backhand to die for but, until he really believes he can be a contender to Federer's throne, his run will probably end in the last eight.

Richard Gasquet - Fourth round: Once dubbed the 'Baby Federer' but never lived up to the label. Is he that good after all? Let’s not forget the Davis Cup event in April this year where Gasquet pulled out of his game with Roddick simply because he didn’t think he could win.

Rafael Nadal - Semi-final: He is just a fish out of water when it comes to Wimbledon. Nadal believes he can win this Slam but his game is built for something else - clay. Always a good outside bet because, as I've already said, the game can be played differently at Wimbledon.

Andy Roddick - Quarter-final: Being in the Wimbledon finals is not unknown territory for the man who could very well be the second–best grass court player in the game. His powerful serve is built for the surface, not to the mention his under-rated consistency from the baseline.

Roger Federer - Runner-up: If there was a year that showed Federer's vulnerability, it was 2007. This is also the year when the Swiss master accepted the fact he can never beat Nadal at Roland Garros. But Wimbledon is Federer favorite slam, this is where he started to believe he is the best and where he started growing up. It could also be the place he realises he's not invincible.

Novak Djokovic - Champion: This year Djokovic thinks and plays as one of the elite players. He already has victories over Federer and Nadal, a great addition to his rocketing confidence. He made the semis in 2007 showing his well-rounded grass play. Now that he has won a Grand Slam in Australia there is no reason to fear either of the top two. Most importantly he has the skill and attitude to oust Federer in his favorite tournament.

Venus Williams - Quarter-final: Winner in 2000, 2001, 2005 and 2007, Venus has what it takes to go all the way. However, the new generation have really closed the gap. In fact, the women's game is so tight at the moment that Venus could easily be ousted by a player outside the top 10.

Svetlana Kuznetsova - Quarter-final: A real danger on grass because of her mobility and athleticism. Kuznetsova can beat any player regardless of rank on any given day. Her best performance at Wimbledon was in reaching the quarter-finals. Until she finds a way to combat her frustrations on court, we won't see the best of this Russian.

Jelena Jankovic - Semi-final: Many wondered how good Martina Hingis would be if she added some real power to her game. Well, Jankovic has shown us the answer. She has death-defying defense on court and her backhand down the line is probably the best in the game. But, just like Hingis, Jankovic has a weak serve and her play is based on consistency rather than attack.

Ana Ivanovic - Semi-final: Her fitness and toughness were questioned earlier in her career, but she has proved to the world the she is Grand Slam material having won Roland Garros this year. Ivanovic prefers to attack - a big requirement on grass - but it is when she is defending that she fails.

Serena Williams - Runner-up: Believes and plays like she is the best - which was true four years ago. Serena's power game was in a class of its own, topped by a pure determination to crush any player that stood between her and the trophy. She still has the best service game on the women's circuit - which is a huge boost on grass - but the reality is that it won't be quite enough on its own.

Maria Sharapova - Champion: Regarded by many as the ball-basher, her screams on court earned her the name 'Shriekapova'. The Russian beat Venus in the final in 2004, with many suggesting that moment would constitute a passing of the baton. But that proved premature as the American won the title again in 2007. One big advantage Sharapova has - and the thing which I believe will give her this year's title - is her quite incredible desire to win.

Now that's an easy draw. Look out for Florent Serra in round 3.

Viktor vs. Lapentti

Santoro vs. Murray!!!

Nadal would play Gulbis or Isner in round 2!!!!!!

Being in the top half means Novak will play on the opening Monday.

Thanks - I was just listening to it on Radio Wimbledon :) I don't think it's that easy - but then I always worry about every draw:)

I'm glad he will play on the first Monday, because I already have tickets from the Ballot for that day :) It also gives him a bit more leeway to rest for any rain delays etc.

Do they ever considered to take a roof? Always stressfull this Wimbledon. Especially last year.

They are in the process of constructing a roof - it will be in place over Centre Court by next year :)

Of course it will be great for the Final, and semi-finals etc, and to make sure international TV stations are happy  But it won't help in the earlier rounds, and on the rest of the courts, which will remain uncovered. You will have the issue that people scheduled to play their earlier rounds on the covered court (usually Federer, Nadal, Nole and the Brits) will be seen to have an unfair advantage over those scheduled to play outside. So I am not hopeful it will really cure the problem.

Novak has an alright draw, but has it tough in places. I think the biggest test for him will be Fed in the semis. If he wins that, I think he will win the tournament. Basically I'm saying the winner will probably come from the top half of the draw.

Yes- I have :) I bought them in the Ballot about 6 months ago:) I knew Federer would play on Centre tomorrow, so I feared they would put Novak on Number 1 :awww: I was pleasatly surprised by the OOP :) It is the only day I was successful in the Ballot for - so I was very lucky :)

If I remember rightly from last year, Wimbledon were quite funny with people taking flags in anyway  Not the little ones like yours, but big ones were not allowed  So even if I had one, I probably wouldn't be able to take it onto Centre. http://www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/news/interviews/2008-06-21/200806211214057147158.html

THE MODERATOR: Questions for Novak.

Q. You have said you were confident of winning this title, if not this year, possibly next year. What chances do you think there are of a repeat of the Australian Open semifinal this year, should you and Roger get that far?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, it's a long way still to the semi-finals. I have to go step by step. It's a two‑weeks event, 128 players fighting for the title, so there's many good players which are very motivated to do well.

Of course, this is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the sports. Yes, I was mentioning that one of my dreams is to win Wimbledon. That's what I had when I was younger. Of course, I wouldn't complain even if I win it in 10 years. I will try to work hard and results will come. I'm sure about that.

Q. Do you see Roger as more vulnerable here than he has been in the past because of the way he's played the first half of this year?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, what you can say? You know, quite some things have changed this year. It's becoming more interesting to see some new names, new faces winning the major titles, and believing more that they can win against the top players, which makes the game more interesting, of course.

Roger is still the No. 1 player of the world. He made a good result this year. Not as good as in past four or five years when he was really dominant in the sport. And, obviously, you know, mentally he was filled up, you know, from such a dominance. It's normal to have ups and downs, and he's feeling, you know, the pressure a little bit.

But I think for him it's a big challenge to defend the first place in the world.

Q. How would you describe Nadal as a grass court player right now?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, he's one of the best in the world, that's for sure. You know, he's playing better and better year after year. He's shown that in Queen's. It was really impressive the way he played on grass. I consider him as one of the favorites to win Wimbledon.

Q. Do you remember anything from Nadal/Federer in the final last year here?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: No, I haven't seen any of the final.

Q. How would you describe yourself as a grass court player at this point?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Improved since couple of years. I'm just playing, you know, tennis on this surface for three or four years back, so you don't get many chances to play on this surface. It's only one month a year, and this is the surface which has the biggest history in the sport.

For me, I always look forward to play on it. It's pretty interesting. It's suitable to my game because it's slower than it used to be. Baseline players have much more success than in the past.

But I'm still working on some varieties in my game, some segments that I want to improve on: serve and volley, which are really important for this surface.

I'm really happy with the way I played in Queen's. Reached the final, so I'm feeling pretty confident.

Q. You said that Roger is feeling the pressure at the moment. Do you think then this is your best chance to capitalize on that this year?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, I mean, I don't want to rush into it. I know that people are looking at me and Rafa as a possible threat to him for the first place in the world till the end of this year.

But it's still a long way, you know. It's only half of the season. I just want to go slowly and just aim some smaller goals for now, you know. I want to be consistent with the results in the major events, try to reach a possible second Grand Slam title.

I know that I have enough quality to do so. You know, Wimbledon is coming up. After that, US Open, which is one of my favourite surfaces and favourite events.

You know, I just ‑‑ hopefully in the end of the year can get a place further on the ATP rankings.

Q. Does it make you more equipped, having won a Grand Slam?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Yeah, of course. It gives you much more confidence. Of course, people look at you in the different way: much more respect and appreciation for what you have done. Before this year's Australian Open, I was one of the potential players to win the Grand Slam. Had a really good run in 2007, but I still wasn't able to make it.

But then, you know, I've done it. As a Grand Slam winner, you know, you get in the history books. Not many players manage to achieve that.

Q. You say that Roger is feeling the pressure. How do you think that can affect him?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, it all depends. Of course, he won the first tournament on grass in Halle pretty comfortably. He feels this is his favorite surface. He's the five‑time defending champion in Wimbledon. He feels great on the Centre Court. Again, he's No. 1 favorite to win it this year.

Of course, I mean, pressure is a part of the sport. He's feeling maybe more now than he used to do in the past years. But we're still gonna see a lot of him in the future.

Q. Do you change your play when you play grass?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: As I said, the grass is much slower, which is more suitable to my game. My game is based on the baseline, but I'm trying to mix it up, you know, to change the pace, to use more slice, and go more to the net.

You know, there is still a lot of room for improvement, and I'm aware of that. So I've been working hard the last couple months on these things, and we'll see how it goes.

Q. With Tim Henman not here, the British public are resting their hopes on Andy Murray. How big a threat to the other players see him this year?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, obviously he's a very big talent, big potential to be one of the top five players in the world. Obviously everybody expected him to do that, you know, earlier this year, but he was struggling a lot with injuries. You know, we have to consider that. He had his ups and downs. It's not easy to come back mentally especially.

But now he doesn't have many points to defend and he's very motivated to do well in Wimbledon, the tournament he hasn't played last year. So he's going to have the big support of the crowd, which is always welcome.

Q. If I could ask you to look ahead for a second, how important is the Olympics to you this year relative to a Grand Slam? Will you be treating it the same?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: I will. I treat every tournament basically the same. Of course, a Grand Slam has a different ‑‑ much higher value. But I try, whenever I get to the court, to give my hundred percent.

As a professional athlete, I'm aware that tennis is very unpredictable. It can turn around in a second, you know. Mentally you have to be strong, and physically, of course, to hold on for 10 out of 12 months, traveling and playing a lot of events.

Olympics, Olympic Games, are games which have the biggest history in the sport. I think for every player, every athlete, it is a privilege and an honor to participate in such an event. It comes every four years, so who knows what is going to happen in four years.

I'll be very privileged to be there, and just looking forward to it. Hopefully I can be healthy to just participate in the Games.

Q. In the past, the men's results in the Olympics have been very unpredictable, a lot of upsets. Roger has made it clear it's very important to him in Beijing, Nadal, you, of course, in Serbia. Do you think this might be a year where the top players do really well in the men's tournament there?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, I think so. Everybody is motivated to do so. Federer hasn't won a medal in the Olympics, Nadal as well, myself. Everybody is eager to do that, so I think everybody's really, really motivated.

I mean, Olympics is a very special place in sports for everybody, you know. So just to be there and feel the atmosphere and meet professional athletes from different sports from every part of the world is just great. And plus winning the medal, it makes you very happy.

Q. You talk about the unpredictability. It's something that Wimbledon is often associated with, the unpredictability of the weather. We've already seen it today affecting the practice rounds. Bad weather forecast throughout the tournament. Is that like a running joke with the tennis players, that when they come over here, they have to get used to it?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: It was a joke, but it's not a joke any more. Now you just want to avoid the bad weather, of course.

I mean, I've been staying in a hotel last two, three years, so I had a really difficult time, especially last year. I was one of the few players which was really hurt by that bad weather. For five days I was playing one match, which was basically impossible.

Afterwards I had to finish the tournament the way I finished it, you know. I had to retire from semifinals, which was very frustrating for me.

This year I have a house, like most of the guys. And just in case that it's raining or bad weather you can have a rest.

But this is a part of the sport. It's part of Wimbledon. Traditionally you have very bad weather. You have to accept it.

Q. How hard is it killing time in the hotel room?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Unfortunately, I don't have time to get to the hotel room. Again, traffic in London is terrible during the day, so you have to stay here and wait.

Q. You mentioned two bad things about the tournament, or about London or the weather.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, now everybody thinks I have only the negative thoughts about London, right (smiling)?

Q. Can you tell us a couple of things that do stand out about visiting London, England, Wimbledon.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: No, it's very nice. London has a special soul. It's a beautiful city, very big city. There's a lot of things to do, you know. A lot of historical objects to visit, sight‑seeing. But we don't have so much time, of course.

I just like the quietness of this area here in Wimbledon. You know, just having the house, it's so much relaxing. You can go by walk to the site and back and just have a garden, being with the family and just keeping your mind a little bit off tennis, saving the energy. I think this is what not many tournaments have.

Q. What has it meant to Serbia to have slams champions this year? What has been the reception? What are your observations on the following as a result?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, the general opinion is that the country is very proud of our achievements. Of course, for such a small country, having two Grand Slam champions in half a year is an incredible achievement. Of course, as individuals we represent ourselves in the first place, but then country as well.

Every time country name is written on a scoreboard wherever we show up, this is a big positive commercial for Serbia. So they really respect it and they appreciate it. Receptions were just amazing. Tennis is No. 1 sport in our country in the moment.

Q. What are your observations on Ana's game? What went through your mind when she won in France?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: No, I was very happy for her. I mean, of course, we grown up together. I know her for long time. She's a great girl. Fantastic tennis player. She's improved so much.

Watching her matches, the last three matches, she was very brave. Whenever she needed, she was going for the shots. This is the attitude of the champion, so she absolutely deserves the Grand Slam.

Q. As the third‑ranked player, you're destined to play either Roger or Rafa one way or the other. I don't think you've played Roger on grass. Considering what you were just saying about him feeling more pressure, is that something you look forward to more as a challenge, maybe more than playing Rafa?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: You know, whoever I play, for me it's a challenge. To have a role of the favorite or to try to win against the better‑ranked player, I mean, everything is a challenge in the sport.

Yes, I do look forward to play against Roger on this surface. We have played on hard courts and clay, as well. You know, it would be great to have a match against him on his favourite surface just to see where the things stand, you know, where is my game compared to his. But it's still a long way.

Q. The Player Council vote is today. Possibility of the top three players joining the council. To have top players representing, what do you think that would mean for the sport as far as changing the direction of things?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: I think it's fantastic for the sport. We're changing the face, changing the picture of everything in general. We were wondering if it's gonna take a lot of time, because even like this we don't have such a big amount of the free time. We have to spend it wisely.

But, you know, we decided together that this is the best thing for sport, to join the players council and to try to be united in the future to make decisions, the good decisions for us, for everybody.

To be involved in all these major decisions and all the specifics, the details, is very important for us, because in the end we are the most important part of the sport. People are coming because of us. We have to defend our interests.

Nole, I am paying 25 € to follow all your matches, so YOU BETTER WIN THE DAMN TITLE. Otherwise you'll know what it's like to have a very angry fan.

Why? Its easy to find free streams on internet, or you dont have so good connection?

My connections is great. Maybe it's because deep down I know that Nole will win the title and I want to watch it on Tv.

Seriously, I am on holidays and this way, whenever I am home, I can follow the whole tournament, not only Nole. And if I had to watch livestreams, I would only watch Nole.

Nole struggled but managed to pull it out fairly comfortably in the end:) He'll need to conserve his energy from now on though, and mind that he doesn't have further lapses in concentration that could harm his title challenge:) I am sure he'll raise his level from now on, get better and better each match, the way champions do:)

Evening :wavey: I am home. And - please - don't be so mean to my little baby Nole :awww: For a set or two, Berrer's serve was just unreturnable out there on the grass - it was so fast you couldn't even see it  He made Karlovic look slow.

I was always a bit  about this match, because the Kevin Anderson fiasco reminds me that Nole doesn't like big servers, and this just proved it  Berrer is a pretty poor player as tangerine_dream said, but he does hit big. He was also confident and had nothing to lose......whilst Nole was nervous, with all the expectation upon him - and he really was nervous at first :awww: and just took a while to settle.

I'm pretty sure that after losing his serve to Berrer for the first time in the 2nd set, he did kind of tank that set. Preferred to start the 3rd set afresh rather than fight and fight against the unreturnable one

Nice to see the Centre Court really liked him though :inlove: He got a great ovation when he came out, and most people were cheering for him! There were a group of young girls who kept on shouting "Novak we love you" -I think he liked them - waved and smiled at them a lot  And he laughed at me when one of my strangled cries of "Ajde Nole" came out louder than it should have done!

Anyway -all in all - a great day at sunny Wimby. Got another  from Nole when I got there - what a darling he is :inlove: He is just so sweet. Every time I meet/speak to him, I respect him more and more as a really intelligent and interesting person. OK- fangirl moment over! Erm - what else - Srdjan and Dijana are there with cute little Djole :hearts: Srdjan was really nice to me too :o

Watched Janko and Viktor's doubles match -also half a set of Korolev/Berdych, and the very end of my lovely Ilija Bozoljac's match - he won :) Got into practice which is not easy at Wimby), - Raquel would have been proud of me:lol: Watched Nole practice, also Janko with Viktor and Dusan ;) -and then Dima practiced with Misha Youzhny :) Also saw Roddick and James Blake.

I'm really tired now- will no doubt add more when I remember/feel more awake. I have to work tomorrow:spit: So will try and get here then.

Oh - for Jess - please tell your Viktor not to sing on the practice court- he is an even worse singer than me - and that is saying a lot :o

And for Jelena - your Dusan is so cute :inlove:

I wouldn't be so sure - I am actually really scared about this match  I know Marat has fallen on hard times - but he still has the talent to beat anyone on the right day, - and if Nole has one of his bad moments (like he did losing a set to Berrer on Monday  ) and gives Marat some confidence, then anything could happen.

Absolutely - Nole's welfare comes first :) And if multi-tasking involves watching him, whilst lying on a couch drinking tea and eating chocolate biscuits - then I am very good at it  And I agree about Safin - he sure isn't the force he was 6 or 7 years ago, but I still worry because he does have the talent to spring an upset now and again - just hope it isn't today.

 I was thinking abou you! remember the Janko - Nole match?

Thank you  in return.

I did feel he would turn the Janko match round though but he has not got a clue today and looks totally negative and spaced out. He's barely got any of Safin's 1st serves back. On the plus side he is as you say holding his own better. Have you got coverage yet?

Believe me - this is painful to see right now. Nole looks like he's been doped.

Don't want to ill-wish Safin - I've always liked him - but we need a Marat-meltdown right now.

I have the option of checking to see if this is on livestream to watch for 20 minutes before I leave but I think I'll hold off.

I like Marat but...it's kind of early :awww: Also, I wanted Federer/Djokovic on grass...

My mother is pissed off at me because I'm mad at Novak.

And I am furious at Novak.

I am about to cry I think. I would rather him lose 30 times to Kevin Anderson than once to Safin.

Jess  Just remind yourself of what Safin's done in the past few months (not much :p) maybe you'll feel better.

I'm really disappointed. I wanted to see Nole go further.

McEnroe just summed it up:

- He's underestimated Safin - thought he'd implode
- He's not winning the groundstroke rallies and he's finding he's nowhere near good enough at the net.
- He's not serving at all well

In short - he's bamboozled.

Hi guys- just popped in to say "I knew this would happen" And - don't worry Jess - I already am crying. I don't dislike Safin, but I wanted Nole to win so much - and I can't begin to think about the sh*t that will be on MTF later,- unless Federer and Nadal lose as well. I actually feel sick. This is really, really bad - and all my fault for not going up there today.

F*** Safin, f*** MTF - f*** tennis :bigcry:

I hate how up Safin's ass all of MTF is going to be. It's going to be all of the same worshipping that makes me dislike the guy in the first place. Oh how charming he is, oh how talented he is. If Safin only cared, he would be better than Federer, Laver, Borg and Sampras combined :worship: Safin is the sun, the moon, the stars. He turns water in wine, this Safin. All hail Safin!

That is how GM is going to be, and I can't handle that.

Know what you mean. :worship: - I feel just the same.

But just avoid GM for a while and divorce the player from the 'fans'. Have to do it all the time with Fed and I still like him.

:awww: Yes - they are pretty bad about him - but - to be honest - I can take that - I just can't take the gloating, and hating and bitching they'll be against Novak.

And I can't watch it much anymore either  I hardly ever come onto the Internet when I'm realy into a match - but I just couldn't do this one alone.
