What a rubbish match. Doesn't Nalbandian ever get embarrassed playing so bad and acting like he doesn't care? That performance was tomato-throwing worthy. I can't believe he was a former Wimbledon finalist. At least Andy keeps fighting when he's losing.

Regardless of that, the Queens lineup was terrific this week, probably one of the strongest fields in recent years. Novak-Rafa final, new Queens champion this year. :)

Can't believe that I woke up early to watch tennis, this match the crowning jewel of my morning. Nalbandian's serve and movement were abysmal, and his forehand was only slightly better at "terrible." That backhand overhead was about as pathetic as it gets. His team should seriously look into dangling a plate of spaghetti in front of him for future matches.

Djokovic's serve looked great (second serve was particularly impressive) and his returns still had fantastic depth, but he didn't really have to put them anywhere special to draw an error from the blob. I expect that Nadal will be a good measure for how well he's currently returning.

Pathetic from Dave, but I wonder whether he was injured or ill or something...wasn't really pushing up into his serve, and didn't make much effort to stretch for balls towards to the end. Definitely wasn't the Dave of yesterday when he won a nice battle with Gasquet.

06-14-2008, 03:45 PM
At 1-1 in the first and 40-15 on Nalbandian's serve the announcers said that if the pattern so far in the match held up, Nalbandian would serve an ace. He didn't. Ended up broken. And never won another game.

The plus side of this match is to know that I could play Djokovic and win only one less game than David Nalbandian.

What "slew of top players" can you possibly be talking about? As far as I'm concerned, there are only two other players at or above his level - Federer and Nadal - and it sounds like you're basically demanding that he beat both of them in every tournament in order for his victories to be "non-hype." Nalbandian is 8th in the world and yet you're claiming that Novak hasn't beaten a top 10 player since March, and Wawrinka is No. 9 right now as well, whom Djokovic beat in Rome.

Nalbandian looked good yesterday mainly because Gasquet(and especially his awful forehand) allowed him to be.
Djokovic doesn't let you play well because he always puts pressure on you, that's mainly why Nalbandian looked so bad today

He's counting on 5 rounds in Queen's and 7 rounds in Wimbledon x 10 years of Novak domination = 10 Queens titles and 10 Wimbledons and a 120 match winning streak on grass. He's just doing his usual smart@ss routine, trying to rile up the Djokovic fans, but it's not really working.

So glad I decided not to wake up early on my Saturday morning to see this - was going to watch TTC replay later but guess I don't have to bother.

It is always intersting to see how MTFers view a match - so objective. Having not seen a single point, from the comments posted either Nole was absolutely awesome and completely destroyed Dave or Dave was a total cripple in a complete tank and Nole just had to get the ball over the net. My guess is it was a little of both but would never know it from most of the posts.

I did read somewhere last week that Dave has been bothered by a leg/hip/pelvis problem since the beginning of the year. I suspect his tight match yesterday didn't help his chronic injury. Bet Gasquet is thinking - why didn't THIS Dave show up yesterday?

Well, we'll see how this year ends up, but you're putting words in others' mouths. It's just the usual strawman argument. Just because some thought Djokovic could win Roland Garros this year or next year on the year after that does not imply that some think he will win the next 10 Wimbledon's, which goes far beyond the current record and would never happen in this era in which serve and volley is dead and groundstrokes and movement are everything.

The fact that you watched the match makes this comment hilarious.

He had 5 DF and 55%, with Gasquet he had 4 DF, with Troicki 3DF with 63%first serve. He served very pathcy in this tournament, his FH was awful in all the matches (didn't see the Mahut one). The problem in this is the match up: he can play well against defensive players and he can make a lot of passing shots against S&V, but when he is is not in form he strugles against agressive baseliners, much more if they have good defensive skills too. Considering his injury that bothers him for a while now, SF is a great result for him.

10 years of total domination on grass: 5 wins at Queens plus 7 wins at Wimbledon. 12*10=120.

No, but she did admit to trolling and she did it along the Djokotard vein, just like ionah did even though it seems he was a Nadal fan.

As for Merton, not an all out troll of course, but I don't understand what exactly he's getting at with his 120 countdown. He would get a lot more mileage just by ridiculing me and others for thinking Djokovic had a chance to win Roland Garros this year.

Gotta say it guys, all this bashing thing is pretty ridiculous from where I stand. Its like a pile of rubbish that grows bigger and bigger by the day. One player gets attacked than fans of that player retaliate by attacking player whose fans attacked their player .... its like perpetuum mobile. It never ends.

Maybe only solution would be to find who attacked first, but that of course can not be done 'cause pile of rubbish got so big it can not be cleared.

For instance, when I first joined the board I posted at some Djoko hating thread, like 'classless family' or something can't remember, and was like 'Why guys? Sure fun is ok, but this?'. One of the posters who was heavily involved in that bashing thing PMed me actually saying there is no ill will towards Nole, but its just a retaliation to his fans. I was like 'cool ok'. But on the other hand I haven't seen that much hate towards Fed or Nadal that there is toward Djokovic. Hard to escape the impression it is connected with Djokovic being biggest challenger to two at the top.

Anyway, its not my cup of tea but looking from a far it is ridiculous. Just my 2 cents (I like that American fraze).

I have the feeling that you would find it easier to come to terms with your own personal shortcomings and positives alike if you were able to climb off the pedestal upon which you've been mounted by the achievements of Novak Djokovic.

Living vicariously through another individual is never healthy under any set of circumstances; be it a companion, family member or successful sports figure. It's as if you expect the accomplishments of Djokovic to be recognized as your own, which is quite amusing in its own respect, but it's even more comical that you'd criticize a player who has reached a pinnacle of tennis that you could never hope to reach -- or better yet, a pinnacle of life that you most likely will never reach, as everything in life is relative and I have my doubts that you will ever even be considered a second-rate doctor, lawyer or physician for that matter.

The problem on this board has always those that linger and linger, waiting for the moment in which their favorite player finally passes a certain threshold, for once that time finally comes they will most certainly applaud and boast as if these very sportsmen were their own siblings -- or perhaps even children.

This is also one of the reasons for which entire fanbases have come under scrutiny and extreme criticism following questionable retirements and tactics which have been employed by Djokovic on several occasions.

As a Federer fan, the only thing I'm guilty of is snobbery. I absolutely cannot tolerate the aesthetically displeasing tennis of players like Nadal -- or even Djokovic for that matter, although the young lad does have rather refined movement on court which makes him appealing to the man that gives little importance to the quality of groundstrokes.

Roger deserves to be considered the best player of all time not because he wins or because I support him, but simply because anything else would seem uncivilized, the man personifies that of which tennis is symbolic -- impeccable movement, a lovely demeanor and fair play that has been acknowledged by each of his opponents -- I really have very little interest in living vicariously through his accomplishments, as most who choose to utilize the search function of this board will notice, it is the manner in which he wins that means the most to me.

Anyway, I'm sure this was a decent match from Djokovic and I expect him to hoist the trophy tomorrow.

As far as I'm concerned, tennis is just hitting some balls with paddles and running around. Let's not inflate it to something it isn't. It's a sport that I personally don't play, but I find it entertaining to watch (and I have felt that way since I was a kid), so it serves that purpose.

Correct, the fact that Djokovic is Serb and successful and plays an interesting game (for me, perhaps not for you) is sufficient reason for me to support him. I'm not keen on all aspects of his character, as I've stated before, and I didn't support some unsavory things like that retirement in Monte Carlo.

The fact that you're trying to moralize why people may support a tennis player is beyond understanding. Your insinuation that nationality/ethnicity is not a sufficient basis (at least in part) to support a tennis player is purely subjective. Maybe you don't think it's sufficient basis (given certain other factors, as well, of course), but I do. I have no problem with Jewish Floridians supporting Shahar Peer when she plays in Miami, I have no problem when the French at Roland Garros cheer against/boo the opponents of Gasquet and Monfils, I have no problem with the Aussie crowd being firmly behind Hewitt, or the Brits cheering on Henman and Murray, etc. Why are you subjecting one particular ethnic group to a different "right-to-cheer" standard than others?

You're starting to sound like prima donna here.

This is absolutely fair. Many posters can't understand why Serbs are rooting for Novak, but they never ask why 90% of the posters here actually root all the time for their compatriots, what's absolutely legit for me. Why is there anyway a national flag beside their names...why they play the national hymn of the certain country when a player win, let's say, a GS?
Anyway...why some people think they are the intellectual giants of the globe invited here to analyze and judge who can be a poster on the MTF, who is a tennis fan, who's not? Why would anybody loose his time here and not on some other kind of forum if he doesn't like tennis? And why is wrong to love more the game because of particular player? This is one of the thousands and thousands of shitty forums on the internet and anybody, even your grandma, is aloud to register...it's all for fun and spending our sad and lonely hours.
Why are you "falling" on Gugu's provocations? Ignore the clown.;)
Look Sawan, for example, this is too funny:

What "slew of top players" can you possibly be talking about? As far as I'm concerned, there are only two other players at or above his level - Federer and Nadal - and it sounds like you're basically demanding that he beat both of them in every tournament in order for his victories to be "non-hype." Nalbandian is 8th in the world and yet you're claiming that Novak hasn't beaten a top 10 player since March, and Wawrinka is No. 9 right now as well, whom Djokovic beat in Rome.

Wawrinka was NOT top 10 at the time...and Fat Dave played like the #300 with his tank job. I'm talking about playing against (and defeating) the Roddicks, Blakes, Davys, and Ferrer's of the world. Let's face it: he's had "cush" draws since the AO...not his fault, but also not a true test of mettle or character.

Absolutely,

I remember when Kevin Anderson :haha::haha::haha::haha: has beaten the Faker, we haven't heard of Aloimeh for few days.
Probably the reason for living for this person is a moment when the Faker wins a match.

Some people take MTF so seriously.

Before the match, Wawrinka was already on the 9th position.
And Fat Dave was on the 8th position today.
Why did he tank is his problem. As in the case why Novak played Wawa, the 9th player in Rome final...wasn't his problem, but the problem of others among top ten who did the tank.

We will just have to see what Djokovic can do in the future. For me there's no sense in going on about it. He's still quite a young player who is developing. He will have many tests in his future, and if we are all lucky, we'll be able to see what happens.

Personally, I don't see the point in arguing into infinity about it. You have your position, and Aloimeh (forgive the bad spelling) has his. I don't think you are going to convince one another.

Silly argument, and to be honest, you're just pathetic. So now Nalby, who's No. 8, was actually "playing like the No. 300," so it doesn't count? And Wawrinka did get his points for No. 9 before the final, so while it may not have been official when Djokovic played him, Wawrinka had already made the wins that guaranteed him No. 9 the following day.

Djokovic beat Roddick, then Rafa, then Roger in Montreal. He beat Ferrer and Federer at AO and the guy who took out your fave. He beat Nadal at IW. Your claim that he hasn't really been tested by top seeds is pure garbage. He's one of the top three players in the world because of his quality, not because of hype. And you'll see that tomorrow, my friend.

No, it's primarily responsive and it frankly doesn't rise to calling Djokovic a "fucking twat" and a drayhorse and Dijana a "mountain whore," which is the tone that prevails amongst Fedtards.

KitinovRules, guaranteed, focuses on him because he's from Serbia. If he wasn't, he probably wouldn't even care about him. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twat

The word twat has various meanings, dependent upon regional dialect. Although its main meaning in British English is usually that of 'idiot' or 'stupid/idiotic/tasteless' (male person), it is understood in American English (and elsewhere including Britain) as a vulgar synonym for the human vulva,[1] vagina, or clitoris, and is used as a derogatory epithet.

Great post. I was always wondering why MTF members think it is bad if you cheer for your countryman. I don't understand why it is different when people (for example) from Spain cheer for their national team in football, or when most people in Italy cheer for Juventus. It is normal to support team or player from your country. As far as I can see French crowd on RG support French players, on US Open crowd support USA players...why people on MTF try to present themselves more cosmopolitan than they really are?
I am no fan of any player, but I admit I cheer for Djokovic because he is from my country (also I like his game style, but thats not important for this post). Why is that crime? I like tennis very much, but I cannot understand people here when they expect tennis followers to be different than people who like other sports.
I am following tennis for almost 20 years, my favourite childhood player was Berasategui (as kid I always wanted to play weird angled shots like he did), I liked Agassi through all his career, but I just cannot understand why I am bad guy because I support my countryman now

Because..this is "classy" sport and we are only party breakers here...the peasants.
And don't count US citizens...there are plenty of nationalities there and because of that they root mostly for non-Americans, what is also legit for me.

To be honest, I was never big fan of anyone until Djokovic (was too young to root for Zivojinovic, and it was so frustrating to cheer for Tipsarevic). The only other guy that I was fan of was Guga. For me it is very strange when someone cheers for their favorite player when their favorite player plays against fellow countryman. I will always be die-hard fan of any Serbian player to any other player. I believe that's normal.

Yet I'm English and I dislike/like Murray. Maybe it's your culture.
