Pretty even match. Nalby returns were poor, he was netting too many of them.

Good match, nice points from both players:yeah: Nalbandian was better on the important points but still a good match from Gasquet as well, hopefully he can build on this and start turning his dissapointing season around.

Richie's serving stats were great. I only saw the last few games so I can't judge the match. But the fact that Richard took it to a 3rd set TB shows that his game is back. He lost worse last year when he was playing 'better'. Stiil, I hope he can take confidence from this week. I am. :) Now beat the Djoker!! :rocker2:

Best match of the day. Some excellent points from both players. Gasquet played very well and can get some confidence from this tourney. Nalbandian, nothing to say, hope he doesn't go back to mug play against Djokovic tomorrow.

Then expect Nalbandian to win, and maybe even comfortably. Nalbandian plays his best tennis when no one expects him to win and conversely plays his worst tennis, when everyone is picking him to win.

Very entertaining match with some really good shotmaking and all-court tennis from both players. Well done to Nalbandian and as for Gasquet, his form looks good heading into Wimbledon.

A good match.

Nice to see Richard hitting some good ball at times out there - clearly having RG behind him for another year helps.

Well done to David though - he sorta lost his focus a bit in that second and on grass it can turn things so quickly.
Played the smarter tiebreak though.

Good to see all 4 top seeds through to the semis.

Nadal vs Roddick and Djokovic vs Nalbandian are both tasty and worthy semi-finals.

This was a good match to watch. This is how tennis should be played. Tennis was the winner in this match. Great serving and shot making from both. Hope Ritchie can get some confidence from this match and apply it to Wimbly. Nalby may actually play well this Wimbly.

Definitely best match today. They both play good, Richie put up a good fight and the fact that Dave had only 1 BP in that first game says a lot, but in the end Dave little bit more experienced handling the nerves in the TB.

Agree, without question, match of the day. I picked Gas when the TB started, really thought he had the momentum on his side, but you're right, Nal held those nerves better and hit the shots under pressure.

I hardly ever was so happy aftar a defeat. ;) It was so good to see an aggressive, brave and variable Richard again. After all what happened in the last months, this was a great pleasure. More to come, I hope. :D

And credit to David, too. After the clay season this match was pure joy.

100% Agreed. He went down, but was going for his shots, which is most important. He played better in this match than in most of his wins this year.

Gasquet's forehand is one of the worst i've ever seen from a top player in the last 20 years.
It's both an ugly and ineffective shot.
What a contrast with his backhand!

What I saw today from Gasquet is aggressiveness which is a good sign of his new partnership with Peyre. Someone said that he played better today while losing the match than most of his wins so far this season and I totally agree. If he keeps up his serves like that, he will be quite a factor at Wimby again but please work on that forehand in the meantime Gasquet!!!!!!!!!
This is my open letter to Peyre: IMPROVE Gasquet's forehand please!!!!!!!!!! It's so ironic that the owner of one of the most spectacular backhands in all of tennis is also the owner of one of ugliest forehands.

06-14-2008, 03:58 AM
Sebastien Grosjean, during his prime, had the worst double handed backhand I have ever seen from a top player yet one of the most dominant, unique and beautiful flashy forehand I've ever to placed my eyes on. Gasquet is very very much like him, except with the backhand.
Watching this match, yes he has improved a bit but unfortunately it just another display of how crap his forehand is. If not the forehand, he would have won, it's as simple as that.

Everytime I watch Gasquet it's always a bit sad. One just wonder, why is he doing such selection of shot? His backhand ridiculously creates so much chances for him to attack, it is a such a crazy good shot, it's nearly impossible to defend against when he's on fire. But funny to say, all the opponent needs to do to defend it is lol just tap it back to his forehand! Then he'll either do some stupid as Nadal like loop forehand or just hit some non-penetrating shots. Will someone help him with the forehand please for godsake?

Richie did a great job yesterday - no comparison to the pathetic loser I had the "pleasure" to watch in Hamburg. His forehand... His backhand was orgasmic, though! He looked positive throughout the match and I don't think he'll be too beat about losing.

Oh, yeah, congratulations to David.:)

Hate to say it, but it's a ridiculous forehand, far worse than nadal's. Nadal's at minimum is a crazy shot on clay, gasquet's is crappy on all surfaces.

Nalbandian plays his best tennis when he is in shape and is in need of some spending money. You can tell he is in shape because his face looks skinny and the belly is no longer there. His face looked skinny in the gasquet match.

It's not about selection of shot ,it's about the fact that as you said ,his opponents now do everything to make him hit forehands because they know that it's a huge weakness.

Gasquet's backhand in the 2nd set was amazing.

If his forehand was only half as good as his backhand,he would be already be a top 5 player if not better

richie21, you are going way overboard about Gasquet's forehand (not in the top 100 ). I thought he hit through it better than he normally does, less loopy. Sure it let him down on the big points towards the end but it was fine for most of the match. Besides it's tough to keep a shot from breaking down under pressure, that kind of stuff is hard to fix.

Now as for those that say that Nadal's forehand is bad.:confused:

Okay, Gasquet will resign to the fact he has a peasant forehand and do nothing about it because groundstroke from MTF told him to.

... That isn't what I'm saying. Fixing or changing a shot takes a long time. For example - changing from a 2bh to 1bh can take time or learning a new tactic and mastering it.
For Gasquet, he needs to stop trying to copy Nadal with that shitty loopy forehand, he reached SF at Wimby last year and if he doesn't this year his ranking will be screwed.

leng jai
06-14-2008, 12:21 PM
Whats your point? Of course altering a shot takes time but that doesn't mean you won't try. Gasquet should have recognised ages ago his forehand was no good and tried to change it. Slight alterations in technique can make a big difference, he might have to lose a few matches for it but it will be better in the long run. Your example is poor, hitting a single handed backhand a double handed backhand is completely different. Roddick's forehand went from flat in 03 to a moonball shot post 05, why would the opposite be impossible?

Gasquet is stubborn. A mental midget. Afraid to try out new things. He likes it his way, know what I mean?
His forehand was fine before, I thought? :? Never made that much UE's as he did now.

I remember reading somwhere that before the Eric era, he parted with a former coach (can't remember who)in part because they wanted to change his forehand and he wanted to leave it alone - bet he is sorry now. HOpefully the new coach is on his ass about that forehand.

But it seems to me that he did hit through his forehand more and was less loopy a few years ago. Guess the guys in the big league know how to expose his weakness a lot better.
