Nadal vs Karlovic: Poll & Discussion

its the mighty Clay Monster (aka high priest of death) against abominable Karlovic. Nobody likes to play this guy. Players say that they just cant get any rhythm against him. We know he will be serving from the clouds.

Can the Clay Monster tame Karlovic? Who wins and why? Nadal did spend over 2 hours on the court today. Will that affect his performance tomorrow?

thoughts are appreciated?

KARLOVIC....he is unplayable on this surface with his serve, monster FH and very effective BH slice which have a very low bounce and is very difficult to control on grass

GO IVO

Discussion? None necessary. It's the QF's...that's pretty much where this particular ride ends for Rafa every year. Why mess with success?

Dr. Ivo! Well, he's got a great serve but not necessarily a great return game. I give the edge to Rafa based on sheer will to win.

I don't knbow about this. Dr.Ivo will be tough to break, but I have a hard time seeing him break Nadals serve as well. Could well come down to tiebreaks in every set. Nadal is the slight favourite, IMO.

If Ivo serves the way he did today he will have an excellent shot at winning. If his 1st serve percentage dips much below 70% I don't think his chances will be good. I don't see Ivo breaking Nadal. This win will have to be earned in tie breakers.

i would have to agree. Dr Ivo will be nearly impossible to break. Nadal doesnt exactly return all that well on slick grass of Queens anyway.

all one can hope for is to stay with Ivo on serve get the set into a tiebreaker and hope he misfires a little with his serve.

i am not feeling very confident about this one for Nadal.

I'm gonna go against conventional wisdom here and say Nadal in 3. Ivo is a serving giant, but is a mental midget, while Nadal has a rock for a brain. It matters. Will be tough, but eventually Rafa tames Dr. Ivo. in tight 3.

Whoever gets the first break in the first set will win.

I suspect it could be a 7-6 6-7 7-6. 7-6 7-6 or 6-7 7-6 7-6 job though.

Part of me thinks Nadal's sheer will to win will take him through here. Roddick or Murray is an easier match for him than Ivo, tbh.

I agree. Usually the best players find a way to beat Karlovic, usually because they're mentally strong enough to withstand his serve and wait for their chances. Nadal did beat him the only the time they played, though that was in 2004. The grass does make it even harder, but I think as long as Nadal gives his all he'll win.

karlovic without his aces, won't be better than Rafa during rally or another type of games. Rafa is mentally too strong, and won't let him won just because he's serving too good. vamos!

stategic tanking in the making...

stebs
06-12-2008, 10:24 PM
Will be interesting. The real problem for Karlovic is that Rafa is left handed. If the Spanaird was right handed I think Ivo would have a great chance to serve Rafa on court for the most part and win one or two rallies to take the match. However, as it is, any rally on Nadal's terms os going to be Rafa FH to Ivo BH and I doubt Ivo can win more than 1 out of every 10 of those.

Even with that said Karlovic will have a shot if he plays like he did today. Nobody can break his serve when he hits it that well. I think Ivo will lose this in two though, losing one breaker and one break.

I don't believe for a moment Nadal will be tanking (though for sure he may not fight so hard) but in all seriousness playing first will favour Dr. Ivo. More moisture, ball will skid through more, less wear and tear on court. Ideal for Ivo basically.

I don't think he'll tank, and I think he would love to win Queens, but I don't think he'll be devastated if he wakes up Saturday morning in Manacor.

If this match up repeats at Wimbledon, I'd expect Nadal to win.

Karlovic could cause the upset. Going to be a nightmare to break on grass this season, given the improvements to his game. He has the heaviest forehand in tennis (note: biggest, not the best). I only noticed this year how heavy his forehand is. I can see him breaking Nadal using his usual tactics: finding a way to get to net as soon as possible.

It might not be a bad idea for Nadal to try some serve and volley, as Karlovic is ripe for that play on the first serve. His returns are invariably blocked back. It would also take the net away from Karlovic.

Have you watched him recently? He's nowhere near as bad as he once was. He's good in rallies, so long as they don't go too long. That's why he gets to the net as soon as he can.

I guarantee he'll frustrate the hell out of Nadal.

Of course. Have you seen it? He's 6 foot 10. It's a massive forehand. That doesn't man it's the best. It's obviously nowhere near the best, the same way the world's strongest man wouldn't have the best forehand just because he hits it the hardest.

Yes, nadal will serve to Ivo's backhand constantly. Actually, he will do it that often that it will allow Ivo to turn around his backhand on a number of occasions.

Nadal's situation is different to last year- he tired himself out a lot more then, but this time he hardly even broke a sweat to win RG, so he'll be as fresh as a daisy still. Plus a match like this won't tire him out much, as there'll hardly be any rallies.

that is pretty much how everyone felt. Karlovic is unbreakable. nearly 2 hours into the match and he is serving over 140 MPH. has over 30 aces already. could end up with 40 or better.

he needs to be in Fed`s 1/2 at Wimby.
