RG Ballboys'thought about players _ Fr TennisMag Poll

marifline
06-11-2008, 03:27 PM
This is the result of a poll which was published in the last issue of the French TennisMag.
Because they felt that players reveal their true nature on court, they asked 89 ballboys/ballgirls four questions : who is the most pleasant, the most unpleasant, the most intimidating and the strangest player. I thought you could find it interesting.

The most pleasant
1. BAGHDATIS 25 %
2. Monfils 13 %
3. Nadal 11 %
4. Mathieu 8 %
5. Chardy 7%
6. Djokovic, Federer, Wawrinka 6%

The most unpleasant
1. CLEMENT 25%
2. Lisnard, Llodra 18 %
4. Almagro 13 %
5. Benneteau, Vicente 6 %
7. Spadea 3%

The most intimidating
1. FEDERER 29%
2. Nadal 22 %
3. Isner, Karlovic 9% ( can't see why :o )

The strangest
1. NADAL 29 % (no surprise here )
2. Almagro 7%
3. Davydenko 6%
4. Djokovic, Monfils, Bryan brothers 3%

So, rather bad results for French players, according to the article, this may be due to the fact the ballboys expect more from their home players, and of course, that they can understand all the swearing. But this is not the first time I hear bad things about Clément's behavior with ballboys.
I'm not really surprised about the " most pleasant" one, it seems to reflect what I saw on tournaments or TV and general opinion.

Yes, of course. There also are similar rankings for the female players. He must have made a strong impression since he barely played two matches. :lol:Exactly, that's why it's impossible so many of them had to deal with Clément this time and they obviously mention him because of his bad reputation (or because they've had bad experiences with him in the past).
Since the RG 2008 ballkids were asked, I would have preferred them to mention the players who were nice and not nice during that tournament. I found the Almagro, Llodra, Benneteau... votes more significant.
Same for the nicest one, btw.

(Now, Clément seemed in the worst mood ever during his only singles match, so I can believe they didn't find him nice during that match!)

I agree with you on this, but given the age and geographic limits, I wonder how many tournaments those ballboys could have been to before this RG. Anyway wether it's his bad reputation ( which is also based on past experiences )or the short experience they have this year, it doesn't change the fact it must be hard to deal with him.

Oh, he doesn't get mad at them. Probably, these instructions are given to the ball kids' coordinator who passes them along to the captains, and they let the ball kids know what to do when on the court with Nadal. I don't think Nadal personally instructs the ball kids.

You know, Andre also had a lot of strange things that he wanted the ball kids to do, including pulling the cellophane off a new racquet as he held it out and walked away.

I used to think so too, but then I read interviews with his mother who says Nadal is really messy at home. :)

Agassi was all OCD when he played too. Lots of strange quirks, but he's not really OCD. I mean, OCD people really have trouble with their lives. The tics start taking enormous amounts of time. Nadal, if he had OCD, would line up his bottles, and then line them up again, and then line them up again, etc.

18% is not bad a result for a "cool" guy.

There was a story with the tournament director of Rome who was sitting in the stands in Miami during a match of Llodra and went apeshit because Llodra was insulting a ballgirl, so he started insulting him in return. (It's definitely not the only time, but that one was reported in the media because of the reaction of the tournament director.)

My son was ballboy this year with RG and he wasn't questioned on the players! I wonder how this classification is made! especially Arnaud into simple made a match to which I assisted and his behavior towards the children were good!

I wonder whether he isn't victim of his errors of the past! To see he playing it regularly is improved much since 2 or 3 years with the ballboys

Mickaël Llodra is also very sympathetic with everybody, HE has to him even children! In the past mIKA was sometimes malicious with the ballboys, hE spit also sometimes on referee! but he also changed these last years much!

I have the feeling which these surveys are made a little randomly or they are not highly reliable! Gael Monfils that I saw in the slides of absolutely unpleasant RG with all the world is one of the more sympathetic nerve because he was in semi-final! a thing is certain my son, nor his friends doesn't answered questions about the behavior of the players!

Here is what happens. He was playing Juan Monaco in Sydney.

Clement was being his usual dickhead self giving the ballboys crap and being a turd and in the second game of the match, he was crying like a bitch about the traffic. Court 5 is next to a motorway exist and this clown expects traffic to be quiet for him and the umpire just laughed at him, even a dickhead like Norm Chryst realised what a fool Clement was being.

Next one at 2-1 in the first set, he asks the umpire for some old balls and tries to hit this bird that was making noise, he is such a fool on court.

Another one was his antics against Santoro at the Aus Open. He even got these old ladies off side with his treatment of the ballkids.

I assume that most ballboys/ballgirls who are assigned the show courts are not rookies. They have probably encountered players like Clement and Baghdatis in previous tournaments, either earlier vintages of Roland Garros or tournaments like Paris Bercy, Monte Carlo or Davis Cup.

As for "errors in the past", I can confirm Clement is still an idiot, although he might have behaved in his match against Monfils.

It's funny because when Mika Llodra spits on a referee, or Djokovitch insults referee or throws his racket without to occupy of the ballboys behind, anybody in speaks?
When Rafael Nadal throws the towel with the ballboys as if he throws of the shit, nobody says anything!

to be often in the tournaments, I can say to you that all the mens players or woman players without exception when they are in the match, they are not super easy, nor sympathetic nerve! It's why before judging; it's especially apart from the courts it should be seen how they are with the public, the media! When one sees with RG, the behavior of G Monfils or his entourage with the journalists or part of the public for exemple!!!!!

I like the remark of the journalist who says that the ballboys quote in less the French sympathetic nerves much; is because with the difference of the other players, they speak the same language and forcing feels more angers, the frustration of the players! when is foreign players they do not understand a word!:haha: (Maybe, certain foreign players are malicious with the public and the ballboys but as nobody understand nothing):p:rolleyes:

and poor Alyzée Cornet which because she is irritated in the ,she is sympathetic nerve and not sympathetic nerve!

and Nadal which makes full with manner with his towel!

failing this to be instructive but it is funny

Next one at 2-1 in the first set, he asks the umpire for some old balls and tries to hit this bird that was making noise, he is such a fool on court.

:haha:
Don't you get fined if you deliberately damage wildlife ? . Maybe this bird was an undangered species, or even worse maybe it was the mother of many nestlings and Clément nearly made all those young birds orphans :awww:

:haha::haha: Thanks for posting that, it's hillarious. Though I'm curious, did Monaco end up winning that match after all of that?

I mean there are other stories, but this was one I witnessed and no Clement won it. Monaco qualified for that event.

Parramatta Road :spit:

You could hear the traffic even in Centre Court anyway, his only solution would be to play Auckland or just go straight to Melbourne.

It was one of the exits off the F4 freeway, not Parrammatta Rd. If it was there'd have been more used car lots, there was the DFO near the road.

He'd hate Melbourne even more. We've got a busy train line there, maybe that would distract him.

Calleri on Ct 18 after losing to Thomas Johansson in 5 sets smashed 2 balls out of the court and almost landed in MCG.

Not sure, that Greenpeace works with the ATP, but I know Norm was like, "what the fuck is going on here".

In Calleri's case, I think he was more disturbed by 200 Swedes chanting for 4 hours than by traffic issues...:)

As for "errors in the past", I can confirm Clement is still an idiot, although he might have behaved in his match against Monfils.

nowadays ballkids in rg can only do it one year. actually, i think they can only enter the selections once, so they mght not even do it at all. they take kids from all around france and the selection is very, well, selective.

The Swedes weren't the issues at all in this case. I suppose serving 4 double faults in a row to lose 8-6 in the 5th set is enough to piss some people off.

jitterbug why are you surprized about Alize? First she cries in the Rome final like she was meant to win it, then she says that Chakvedatze is not a nicer person because she said that she (Alize) was a good player when she was ranked 30. I dont understand what she wants. She was also whining way too match against Dulko in RG.

Shes a bitch..

As for Sharapova...She's just a bitch on court. She SEEMS to be nice off court. I am just really surprised about Beneatteau! He was one of the nicest. Took a photo with him, he smiled and talked and everything. Very strange.

Im just confused about the percentages. Why dont they add up to 100? Hoq is is supposed to be?

They don't give the whole list of all the players who were mentioned once. And the ballkids could give more than one answer, of course.

Benneteau can be quite whiny and irritating during his matches, I don't find it surprising.

no way clement would have won that if Kiefer had played RG

Didn't young Julien get some kind of exorbitant fine last year (or the year before) at Wimbledon (or RG) for going beyond the pale whilst sledging Melo & Sa?
