Karlovic's serve is even better in the mountains
the high sea level favors Karlovic and makes the balls bouncing higher

break for Federer now, he worked hard to get it
5-2* Federer

Karlovic's only hope is a 3rd set tiebreak I think

Neely
07-09-2004, 10:23 AM
Karlovic's only hope is a 3rd set tiebreak I think
yeah, you see one serve can decide the whole tiebreak as he did in the 1st set and Karlovic is even able to get a tiebreak off Federer

Neely
07-09-2004, 10:27 AM
I think Karlovic has the best serve now, not as fast as Roddick's but so damn effective

as I saw PimPim in Australia and Memphis for the first time I thought that his serve is the best, but meanwhile PimPim has lowered his serving level and got ripped in pieces by Mayer in Wimbledon who showed how you can easily you can beat him if you play cleverly enough to move him around

Karlovic = best serve for me at this moment, even better in the mountains

WyveN
07-09-2004, 10:28 AM
has he come close to breaking Roger?

Neely
07-09-2004, 10:29 AM
has he come close to breaking Roger?
no, not from what I have followed... but he doesn't need to if he wins the tiebreak somehow

WyveN
07-09-2004, 10:31 AM
with that serve I am amazed Ivo loses so many tiebreaks, he should be winning 80% of them

Neely
07-09-2004, 10:32 AM
2-1* Karlovic

Neely
07-09-2004, 10:41 AM
with that serve I am amazed Ivo loses so many tiebreaks, he should be winning 80% of them
yes, that's definitely right, he is just even in tiebreaks this year.

I think the main problem with Ivo is that he doesn't get enough points on his opponent's serve. Once you have a minibreak against Karlovic or if you are break in front Ivo is almost a lost case I think.

good tiebreak players like Roddick or Federer are able to hold serve and get somehow the minibreak because they have better return abilities than Ivo.

Neely
07-09-2004, 10:45 AM
0-30 --> 40-30 --> game Karlovic
4-3* Karlovic

Neely

one more service game and Ivo has reached his only gaol in this set: playing a tiebreak

Neely
07-09-2004, 10:56 AM
6-5* Karlovic
2nd love service game for him in a row

looks bad for Roger if he can't score on Karlovic's serve going into a 3rd set tiebreak now :scared: :scared:

Federer outguns Ivo Karlovic 6-7(5) 6-3 7-6(4)

that was very hard work for Roger, finding himself down with a set and needing the 3rd set tiebreak
you may not underestimate Karlovic, even not on clay

GO ROGI!!!!

tschaeggy
07-09-2004, 11:08 AM
he did it, great!! :) :) did'nt thought he could do it! he's now talking about the service from k, it's extremely difficult for r. to get it, his second serve is very good, and the wind also is tricky, now perhaps against rosset would be great to play.... in a few hours we know it!

yanchr
07-09-2004, 11:08 AM
wooooooooow Roger! the match is sth like in Wimbly at least from the scoreline. Roger must have tried very hard for the whole crowd in his homeland. Cheers!

Does it mean he will have to play a second match later today?

Neely
07-09-2004, 11:08 AM
I think Federer is for sure not happy to play this week again, but he does not have many possibilities to play in Switzerland so he should be trying everything to stay as long as possible in this tournament

WyveN
07-09-2004, 11:11 AM
I think he will be half dead in the match later today..............however Rosset will probably be worse

I think Federer is for sure not happy to play this week again, but he does not have many possibilities to play in Switzerland so he should be trying everything to stay as long as possible in this tournament
Very true I think. So I said he is playing much more for the crowd than for himself. He must be exhausted now...can he just retire :p :p

Karlovic's serve is even better in the mountains
the high sea level favors Karlovic and makes the balls bouncing higher

Actually, the pace increases as there is less resistance, and players have to aim their groundstrokes shorter in the court and Gstaad isn't that high.

Karlovic almost beat Moya at Rome.

Neely
07-09-2004, 11:40 AM
exactly, that's why I was saying that Karlovic's serve is even better in the mountains, let alone that a 6'10" guy must also loving higher bouncing balls

Action Jackson
07-09-2004, 11:44 AM
They don't use a special balls, just because they are in the mountains. Too bad they don't play in Mexico City or Bogota anymore. Then again it would be funny if they played tennis in La Paz, that would be interesting.

well done for him, but especially the 1st set wasn't as easy as the result is indicating. I followed the livescore and Andreev had to save 5 break points in the first two service games

Neely
07-09-2004, 12:33 PM

Being tall wasn't enough, he never plays well in Gstaad, but he had chances against Radek.

The big match today here for me, now since Båstad has been rained out.

even if Federer is tired he is playing too good for most opponents...
Well, I mean, what else does Stepanek want? Federer came from a Grand Slam, playing seven best of three matches in two weeks, he had to deal with uncountable rain delays, he won Wimbledon again and defended his title, all this hype about him, comes to Switzerland, he played a touch match against Karlovic earlier this day that involved two tiebreaks and he still finds a way to overcome Stepanek in another three sets

that's too dominant... I'm happy for all other players that Federer doesn't plan to play until the Toronto TMS... then can other players also win; because so far, you're almost in a lost situation if you're facing Federer in a tournament at any stage (just ask Pavel, great player who could have done much better if he got better draws during the first months of the season)

@@ Yeah Federer is in the form of his life & if he keeps up this pace he may get 10+ tournament victories for the season{a la Sampras 94, Muster 95}. :worship: :worship:
BTW~ How do you think Hewitt likes seeing Federer Express on his side of the Draw    ! *At AO Rocky Llegs was in great form only to lose in 4-sets to Roger at Rd4 stage; at Hamburg TMS Lleyton was again in great form only to meet Federer in swing in the SF; & then the last cruel blow was when Hewitt took out a string of good players (including Moya) to reach Wimbledon QF~ only to once again lose a 4-setter to guess who  :worship:  !

yeah, I don't like the Hewitt vs Federer matchup either because if Roger is playing like that he will get the better out of Lleyton in almost every match.

Yeah to fully regain his confidence it's important for Lleyton to win another significant event ;) ; you could say he still hasn't fully recovered from his 2003 slump  ! @@ In practice most guys say Hewitt's hitting the ball better than ever^ yet he still struggles to win the big matches. Remember he hasn't won a TMS since Indian Wells in March last year & though his Slam results have been consistent(uso~QF, ao~Rd4, fo~QF, wimby~QF)--> he's always falling a couple of hurdles short of glory!!!!

yeah George, Felix s beat Rainer on clay... I like him too, esp when he beat Lleyton in TO in 2002 -- too bad it rained that evening cos most of us went home only to find out the next day that they had indeed resumed play a couple of hrs later... damn! it was fun while I was there watching it tho... Felix got some great pockets of support, incl me and some women behind me -- we kept shouting VAMOS, FELIX!!!

so did chela beat soderling or vversa?? and martin or zabaleta??

It's interesting that Rainer's record is better on clay than hard/grass court this year. He has a winning record on clay and grass while his hard court record is miserable.

RonE

CmonAussie,

I have a feeling if Lleyton draws Federer early at US, this time it will hinder Fed more- remember, he's playing the 2 TMS's, putting a lot of emphasis on the Olympics (more than he should IMO), put a tremendous amount of effort to win Wimbledon and to do well in this tournament (Gstaad), he will just be totally worn out come the USO if he keeps it up, mighty well as he has been playing.
Besides, Lleyton is probably sooooo sick of seeing Federer's face accross the net, with 2 losses to him in GS's this year I think he'll be extra inspired.

The way Federer is going I just can't help but think about Sampras in 1994, when he had such a great run up to and including Wimbledon, and then he got injured because he was playing too much and everything just went downhill from there (4th rnd loss to Yzaga at Open). I think Roger has to be very very very careful now. :scared:
