Which Nadal is playing better?

Every year he is improving on clay. According to me this year he also had better results in Indian Wells and Miami (1 final, 1 semi final) and played better on these tournaments comparing with previous years. What do you think about his possible performance on upcoming grass and fast hardcourt season?

On clay, this year. Overall he is a better player.

2008 was his greatest improvement ever. He is right now an absolute monster on clay. Absolutely devestating to watch.

2008 without a doubt. I had my concerns about his backhand but most of them have been put to bed. I fancy they could come out again during the hard court season though.

in 2008, nadal on clay is no longer the player who roger once called one-dimensional. as roger said, he could no longer count on rafa playing short balls, and as rafa said, he has improved and has more variety in his game.

I never thought he would improve on clay since 05. I actually think the changes he made on clay will have a huge impact on his hard and grass season. So 2008 could be the year..

Imo it's the other way around, the big improvements are the serve and more modest gains on forehand and backhand on other surfaces that are helping him on clay. Last couple of years he would have lots of variation in serve speed going from one surface to the next, cutting back to the safe serve once he gets on the RG courts. He didn't do that at all this year, keeping the same motion all the way through. Didn't really pay off against federer, but a real weapon against the others in the tournament and will be necessary against djokovic off clay.

Ofcourse the other huge change, Physically he is just much much stronger, a real ogre! :)

He's at his best right now. He also just said something very encouraging:

"I play more inside the court, not just two meters behind the baseline," said Nadal.

"I improved my slice, I change more directions. I hit more flat shots, especially with the backhand."

His form this RG has been the form of his life. What's most encouraging for me is that he is really ripping that backhand now. He was catching the Djoko forehand off guard many a time in their semi by ripping it cross court and suprised Federer in the final by shooting them down the line when Federer was trying to aim for the backhand to stop the monotony of their usual rallies. Earlier in the year Rafa's backhand was laughably poor, short, loopy, ineffectual. I'm hoping his current backhand will stay because I think it's what got him so far in Wimbly last year.
