Federer is using the right tactics just playing dumb on the big points and throwing away his one lead. He deserves to lose. He just isn't mentally tough enough to win this. There is always next year and he still has a summer hard courts with the USO to save his year.

INdeed. He's outplayed Nadal for large parts of the match, but that's grass court tennis for the most part: you have to take the chances that you're given or it's over.

This loss is going to be a whole lot more difficult to overcome compared with the RG loss.

This isn't something that happens once or twice. It seems to happen each time he plays Nadal. Sure, I don't expect him to break Rafael with each opportunity that he gets, but when he's dumping 2nd serve return in the net over and over again on BPs, you have to question his mentality.

The only solace for Fed right now is that he knows that when he's pressed with the FH, he's had the upper hand. Nadal has only pushed him around when he has first served out wide on the AD court and hit is first FH. All the other rallies, Fed has had a shot.

Shades of 2004 on this rain delay, one can only hope. Of course he was only down one set there.

1/12 break opportunities is obviously pathetic. How many deuce games has Nadal gotten out of? And how annoying is it to see Nadal spinning that serve into the backhand 90% of the time and keep getting weak replies?

Because as we have seen federer isnt able today to employ a strategy that is somewhere in the middle.

He's playing better than last year in many ways other than on the big points. 15-30 again.

wow...just wow. 2 2nd serves that were nothing and right into the net. 1 for 10 and that's 6 or 7 DIFFERENT games he's had break points.

Federer really deflated now...he just needs to hang in there...he's playing well.

Two badly played points...he's lost all patience now.

This is certainly more deflating than the loss at the French or even the match last year, and it's because Fed is outplaying Nadal. It's easy to say that, but Fed has consistently been putting pressure on Nadal's serve, and for large sections, been virtually untouchable on his own. For the first two sets, he was pounding inside out FHs and pushing Nadal all over the court.

This is about as deflating a loss as it can get, controlling much of the match, having had so many chances, taking the offense away from the player everyone has touted as the new Mr. Aggressive, and still being down two sets. Nadal has been spinning second serves in at like 80+ mph and Fed is just dumping shots into the net. I don't even want this rain delay: Fed could easily come out playing -worse-.

Mrs. B
07-06-2008, 05:08 PM
as long as he's putting pressure and playing the points short, he's fine, then he plays short balls and gets into rallies, he's outgunned, and his coming to the net only to be passed is like committing suicide. :(

okay i've switched off the television now... can't bear to watch the match any longer... now with rain delay... and it's 12am now... i'll be off to bed early...

i can't see how federer can rebounce back after the rain... i believe the rain is going to favour nadal's play even more... hope that my predictions will be wrong and i will wake up in the morning with good news...

so far looking at the match... i think nadal played better on the big points... federer seems to have issues on big points... very unlike of him to be like this against other players... he had so many break points but unable to convert... and many times making stupid mistakes on break points he should have won... u can't play like this and win against nadal... plus his serve isn't up to his standards... often against other players... he relies on his serve to get him out of the hole... but that just isn't working today...

Really, I think if Federer does lose this one I'm more likely to lose interest in tennis, or at least the Wimbledon tournament, than Federer. It's just so irking to see someone with Nadal's gamestyle come this close to a Wimbledon title. He can have the French for all I care. But this is meant to be the home of attacking tennis - serve-volleying, slice approach shots and all that stuff. The way Nadal plays is in many ways antithetical to this.
Roger, for the sake of tennis purity -- the way the game is meant to be played -- pull this one out! :p

I believe so. In 2003, Venus was given a pep talk after being down and out against Clijsters. Richard always has good strategies; I wonder what he'd tell Roger to do against Rafa right now. For one, I think he'd tell him to get 2nd returns in play on BPs.

This will be a tough one to lose.....because I think overall Roger's had the right tactics today, I think he's played better than he did last year. It's just those beatings on clay have made him mentally weak against Nadal on grass. And the more chances he gets that he misses the harder it is to hold his own serve.

That really would be interesting if it were to happen. I'm struggling to recall a match where a player has been two sets down and on the verge of being ousted and yet won more points, though it's not like I obsessively monitor that statistic either. Federer for example was in many statistics ahead of Safin in the 05 AO semifinal but at least that was extremely close on the scoreboard too.

If it has, definitely a lot sooner than I expected.

Man, Rog is just getting old, I guess.
26, 27 is by no means old, but Nadal is just younger, quicker, and stronger with a mental fortitude to rival the Great Wall of China.

Sad, but it is what it is!
No great player can avoid being surpassed by the next generation, and hopefully Rog will handle it with grace and dignity.

Thank God he took the tiebreak, if he had lost the tiebreak after leading 5-2, I really would have felt like strangling Roger

Federer needs to win it on Nadal's serve...too much pression for his serve.

4 aces and a service winner in that breaker.
