Nadal should treat the US hardcourt season with respect now... and maybe play for #1

it would be good to see Nadal treat the hardcourt season with respect... by... not being greedy and taking big money off becker n mercedes to play stuttgart...

if you remember, it was after this tournament last year where he began to tape beneath his knees... he went from clay to grass to clay too quickly... needlessly...

a tennis players career is relatively short, so yeah... the money grab is on... but that shouldnt apply to the greats of the game...

...no?

what do the Rafa fans think...

i don't think it really matters if he treats it with respect or disdain

his body cant take the pounding on the hard court; there is something called biomechanics and it is the great equalizer, often like clay. He can be beaten to submission on any surface except clay, where he is the GOAT

OMG if only Rafa had taken the #1 ranking seriously! Quick, you have to find him and tell him, otherwise he'll tank the U.S. again:wavey:.

When was the last time he was "beaten into submission" on grass? Besides, from what I remember, Indian Wells and Miami are also US hardcourts, and there he is consistently successful.. What he needs is injury-free Wimbledon.. Wimbledon injury - even if it was not very serious - really affected his hardcourt season last year..

i totally agree with you about the fact that the inertia clay provides, agrees with his style of play... i mean, thats his upbringing right...?

but... even federer says that people who say nadal cant play on other surfaces but clay are idiots... as evidenced by tournament and TMS wins on hard... and i feel he'll do a hard court Grand Slam one year...

i just think he is too good to let cash dictate where he plays and give #1 a real go...

he cant win a hard court grand slam cause the back to back grinding of best of 5 matches on his knees are brutal

rafa is a thumper who plays sick defense and makes something out of nothing.... waking up the next day itself following that style on hard court is brutal

saw how the court beat him to submission last year..same thing at flushing meadows this year.

That's precisely the opposite of what Rafa needs to do. More clay in the spring, please.

i disagree that US hardcourts will yield him the #1... it's like free points at Stuttgart for Rafa, why not add them to the ranking? He'll need another solid Wimbledon, probably have to have his best US Open ever, and reach the SF (QF might be enough), and win at least one of the last 4 TMS this year (Madrid probably his best shot...) with solid results in the others, even then it's so close with Novak so far this year, plus if Roger can win Wimbledon like usual and sweep the summer hard court TMS, then Roger, Rafa, and Novak would all have 1 major and 2 TMS titles... plus the olympics is up for grabs!

it's going to be a very exciting summer in the rankings race

light balls + fast surface + heavier movement on HC = Nadal not able to retrieve serves and hunt down winners + errors flowing from his racquet = Nadal losing... but he could still grind out a few HC grand slam titles during his carrier maybe

yeah... fair enough...

i've seen him win on hardcourt before... and beat fed on hardcourt before...

i guess my main motivation for starting this thread would be to have rafa acheive #1 and force fed and djokovic into the semi's playoff in major tourneys in what has become a 3 horse race... that would be the most interesting scenario for the coming year, for me anyways...

i understand its not his rafa's surface, but... its not like he cant do it, and, its not like anything else should matter most after for the rest of the year right?

proper rest post W'don(like fed) and focus on the US TMS's + the US Open i think could see rafa gain enough points to throw a huge spanner in the seedings for future tournaments...
