I know, what a nightmare - I couldn't bear it again either:eek: I was working and popping to the one (at that stage) email computer to check the score while pretending that I was waiting for an urgent email about a weekend arrangement! Liar. I was getting a lot of strange looks as to why I was so jumpy about meeting "an old friend at the airport" while getting a panic attack at the tie break in the second set of his match with Rochus. Still it would be worth it to see him get his grass court game back on track. Hingueras will be with him I hear - interesting to see how that goes.

The one good thing is that he's going to gain points in Halle. Hopefully he gets the transition from clay to grass (esp in the mind) done in Halle and enters Wimbledon without RG in his mind.

You'll be there!?! Fantastic - take all our love, good wishes, hopes and dreams with you to Roger. I agree - Roger needs the support of his fans now in a testing time even more than in the great times. By support I don't mean blinkered fangirl/boy ism - all sports stars go through testing times and it should be recognised, sometimes they get it wrong - that should be recognised as well. But genuine through thick or thin support. The question has always been asked of Fed's fans - are you a fan of the man, his game or his success? This is the time that will tell. I'm not willing to bask in his glory in the good times without being willing to wade through the "crap" with him in the bad times.

So have a good tournament both of you - you can be our channel to Roger!!

Thank you so much, and be sure, we'll send you all our love...!
I fully agree with your notes on fangirlism - I actually quite despite that. I've always felt that one loves someone despite that person's mistakes, while fanboying/idolization is just closing your eyes for that person's mistakes - quite a difference!

As for me, I became a fan of Roger's for his game, but it has evolved into being a fan of the MAN just the same. Success doesn't interest me, I'll keep on cheering for him, even when he ends up the #765 in the world and going out in first rounds everywhere... :worship:

I hope you and Doris enjoy the tournament and that Roger plays well there. :)

We'll be there on Tuesday - arriving somewhere around 11:30. I have to get a train from where I live at 6:00 AM... :help:

I guess he'll get a Wednesday start, but it doesn't hurt to see quite a few other players out there as well - quite a bunch of my favs around, Tomas Berdych (lovely fellow! :hearts:), Misha Youzhny, Robin Haase (hey! a fellow countryman! :D)...
I'm sure we'll be having a good time! :D

The #1 in the world lands in Halle

Roger Federer arrived in Halle and has his first practice on grass at the moment.

No trace of sadness: 2 days after his loss on the final in Paris Roger is highly motivated and in good mood for the 16th Gerry Weber Open.

Just before his first practice early in the afternoon the 4 time Gerry Weber Open champion enjoyed blue skies and summer temperatures: "Finally the weather is nice. I had enough of rain during the last 4 weeks."

Federer and his girlfriend Mirka Vavrinec were welcome with flowers by the tournament director Ralf Weber and the tournament founder Gerd Weber at 13:38 o'clock in the Gerry Weber Sportpark Hotel. Federer had arrived with a private jet from Zurich to Paderborn.

During his talk with Ralf Weber Federer was informed about all the scores and news from the Gerry Weber Open and was happy that the German players had done so well up to now: "That's good for the tournament." However if he wants to start perfectly the tournament he has to spoil the mood and the chances of another German professional player Michael Berrer from Stuttgart who is his opponent in R1.

EDIT 2 : Someone from RF.com already translated everything  Thanks to vrazkar

Part I

The moderator says first that they are happy that Roger came to this presser just a couple of hours after he arrived to Halle. He says "No problem" with a smile. They are also happy that he takes part in the tournament. Then moderator asks how does it feel to play on the surface on which Roger practiced today? And Roger smiles all the time... He says: "A little bit different but I feel very well on grass. I must say that I had fun to play again on grass, it's brings you joy. Every time that I go to clay or grass I have a special feeling because I wonder how long it will take to get used to the new surface. But then after 2-3 days I start feeling well. Today especially that nice weather helped a lot. The practice was good and I don't have any physical problems which is very important after Paris. That's why I must say that I am very content.

The moderator says: "You brought your whole team with you and maybe your aim is to concentrate on Wimbledon starting with Halle and working with your whole team."

Roger: "Yes, exactly. My masseur is here, my conditional trainer as well. He goes home tomorrow but he takes care that I do everything correct with warming up and exercises... Then also Jose Higueras the coach is also here. The only one who is missing is the Davis Cup captain who was also with me in the last couple of weeks but will be back for Wimbledon so my team is almost full at the moment.

The moderator gives the word to the people from the press and while doing this Roger smiles again.....

Part II of the presser

I simply can't hear the question of some of the journalists. So here are mainly the answers of Roger:

Journalist: I think she asks when did he decide to take part in Gerry Weber Open

Roger: "Well, one should first judge how one feels in the first moment... You have to understand that I go to the presser only 15 min after the match... Yes.. So then you just want to be ready with the presser as soon as possible. I usually want to give myself some time and then to think it over well. The match on Sunday wasn't that hard and of course that helped to be able to come here. That's the only positive thing from this match... But I decided on Sunday evening that I would come here and called Rolf to tell him that I was ok and felt well. In fact I wanted to give myself some time till Monday afternoon, to relax and decide if I come here but this was clear to me on Sunday evening and that's why I called him to tell him so that he could sleep well." (laughs)

Journalist.... I think she asks him if it wouldn't be better to have 2 weeks rest from tennis instead of coming to play here.

Roger: "Well, you have to take the positive from everything. You can take yourself some time to relax and to go away from all the stress and appointments. But I took a commitment to the tournament that I would come to play here in the next 3 years as long as I feel well. In the same time it brought me a lot of luck to play here and then Wimbledon. It all went very well in the previous years and that's why I felt a bit unsure last year when I went to Wimbledon without playing here. It wasn't the same way of preparation. That's why I hope that this time around it will be also ok with playing here and thus being able to prepare for Wimbledon. But it is also true that after this tournament I will have a break because the last couple of weeks were very intense."

Journalist: Have you thought about analyzing the clay court season so far... (not sure here)

Roger: "I don't have any idea if I will speak about this with the coach at all... Clay court is over and analysing it now won't help me prepare for hard court season. That's why I think that it's better to speak about this in 3 months after USO and to see if something should be done in a different way. But I should say that now 2 days since it is over it's already out of my head which honestly is good for me."

I love it, I just love the way he bounces back. It doesn't mean things don't hurt or that he ignores them - they are put in a box to be reopened and dealt with at the appropriate time - now on to the next task with the challenges it entails. That's the mind of a champion I suppose. It's not how he was when he was younger when he used to brood for ages, it must take so much discipline.

He was having much more difficulties with his serve last year during the clay season, it wasn't untill Wimbledon last year that he really started serving well.

In 90% of all his matches he starts playing badly after he breaks - is this a recent problem or it is always been part of his game?
He's been doing that for quite some time as well, in recent years it may not have been quite as bad as it has been at times this year. I seem to recall that he's always had matches were he's failed to serve out the match or sets, he just usually after that would play a good game or tiebreak to then take the set/match anyways which he hasn't always done this year

No, it's a recent problem. He was called FedExpress for the ability to run away quickly with the leads.

Two problems that have been here forever: at least one :retard:ed service game per match and losing his own serve right after failing to convert numerous bps.

Absolutely, that's why Venus, Serena and Davenport have been so successful at Wimbledon with first strike tennis, Sampras made a living of that, barring he had a very good first volley, with that huge serve most of his volleys looked easy.

Q: Was it easier than you expected?
FEDERER: Well, yes, especially in the end it was excellent. He served very well, in the first four games there was nothing really I could. I had one break point, I guessed left, he went right. It was unfortunate. But otherwise the way I played from the beginning really, my reaction was good, my movement was good, my serving was excellent. I even tried out a few things when I was up 30 or 40 love on my serve which was good as well. So, I’m very happy with my first round performance.

Q: Does it feel great to be back on grass?
FEDERER: Yes, it feels natural. I feel natural on clay as well. Hard court is a little bit brutal because of the change it hurts. But grass and clay are smooth surfaces. I find actually pleasure and a kick out of waiting for my chance because sometimes it can be pretty frustrating. You are losing to love and there is nothing you can do because the guy is just serving to big. You just have to wait for your time to come. I like that. That’s maybe one of the reasons I’m so successful on grass.

Q: Why was today so different from last time you were here?
FEDERER: Last time I won in two sets the first round. It was similar circumstances. I arrived, played for one and a half hours, then just warmed up and off we went. The only thing was that from the second round on all I had was three setters. I had a very difficult draw as well. This year, my next round opponent I’ve never played him. He can be pretty steady on grass, so I have to make sure I figure him out early. After that the draw looks pretty tough again. I’ve been successful here the last few years and I fell I’m doing well. But on grass you never know, you have to go point by point. You can’t go game by game. It’s a tricky surface.

Q: How important is it mentally to be back on track quickly with a win?
FEDERER: For me there is two ways. Either you don’t play this tournament and then you get away from everything. You arrive in Wimbledon and nobody asks questions, or you don’t do many press conferences. And few days before Wimbledon starts, people want to know about Wimbledon not about Paris anymore. Or you come here and you face the press for a day about Paris. After that your last match is a grass court match and not a clay court match. It’s very smooth actually. It’s not a time where you lose so much energy thinking about what happened. It’s really no problem. Either way works fine. This is a way of gaining even more confidence and a better feeling about next week in Wimbledon.

Q: This is probably the best first round match you’ve ever played here?
FEDERER: I agree. I was never in trouble on my own service game. I returned pretty well against a big server. I reacted very well at some times. I was able to put him under pressure. I could have even maybe broken him one more time with a forehand pass. I thought I was able to dominate him enough which came as a surprise because he was playing really well. He was playing aggressive, putting me under pressure. So, I thought it was going to be something like a 7:6, 6:4 if things went great. So, a 4 and 2 is quite a surprise.

I believe it was Martina Navratilova that said this year Roger wouldn't win RG because he has too many options in his game. Tennis.com writer Steve Tignor said something similar a while back. Basically saying that Roger's game was too beautiful for clay. I must admit I get more chills watching Roger play on grass than any other surface, even though my overall preference is hard court tennis.

Not allowing a break point, serving at 76%is a good match.

I wonder why he decided to put on weight (the fact that he is talking about it means that he is not just aware of it but has consciously decided to add weight). He seems to have beefed up his upper body but it was of no use in the RG final and it may be an important reason for his ongoing movement problems.

Q: You look very fit and also you have lost some weight since last year. Is that because of your illness or because you purposely tried to do something?

FEDERER: After my sickness actually I thought I gained a little bit of weight. I just thought I was maybe a couple of kilos too much. So, I tried to look at my weight just the last two months or so, and I lost a few kilos, the ones I really wanted to. Thatís maybe one of the reasons I feel better again, Iím moving better. Obviously automatically because Iím doing so much sports the last few months, itís also normal you lose some weight. But, youíre right, Iím in good shape. I feel fine. But compared to two years ago, Iím much heavier than I used to, Iím 88 kg now compared to the 80 kg written in the media guide. But itís not all on the stomach or on the neck, 8 kg hanging off the neck (laughs). Or a 8 kg nose (laughs).

I think he didn't say he intentionally put on some weight? But the good thing is that he realized the problem and lost some since. I actually think he can lose a bit more kgs.

He says he is good shape but at the same time he says he has gained 8kg (or more) which tells me that he is ok with the weight gain. I agree that he definitely needs to shed that weight because that would account for his poor movement.

Also, his reference to the weight not being "all on the stomach" tells me that he realizes that he has gained some fat in the stomach but at the same time doesn't seem concerned about it.

I'm sure Roger wouldn't make a number like that up, but 88kg is equivalent to 194 lbs or so, and Roger doesn't look that heavy to me. My guess is now that he's playing more (what has it been now, playing 7 out of 9 weeks?) and is able to do more fitness with Pierre he'll shed some more excess weight. In the summer when he trains in Dubai it's usually 100-110F and dewpoints over 70F. If that doesn't make you shead lbs I don't know what would.
