Silly me, since Tennis Channel isn't playing the mens semis live, I assumed NBC had the coveted exclusive live coverage, but they've scheduled only enough time for one match (three hours), and that slot appears to be around the time of the second match, depending on the exact OOP.

Is it normal for only one mens semi to be aired in the US? (aside from Tennis Channel delayed coverage)

kalisita
06-05-2008, 05:26 PM
It's normal when NBC is involved. I wish they would just let tennis go. The Australian Open coverage was great because it was just ESPN and the Tennis Channel. Everything was live and you got to see complete matched in the later stages. I wish NBC would piss off.

can anyone confirm NBC is showing one final at 10 a.m pacific time...they say live, but it isn't, in fact they could slice and dice both, since live coverage begins at 4 a.m. Pacific time. TTC says the second semifinal will be shown at 1pm, pacific time, I think--but they seem to have wnough time for both...5 hours...damn NBC...Nadal and Djokoivc are the first match, Federer and Monfils follow...so NBC could be showing either?

The SFs start at 7am Eastern time. NBC coverage starts at 10am Eastern time so they are probably showing Federer-Monfils unless the Nadal-Djokovic match lasts more than 3 hours.

TTC: 4-11pm Eastern time

 West coast will be screwed again because I bet it's all time zone for NBC. i.e. the coverage will start 10am pt. NBC will keep tennis coverages because this time of year, there's nothing showing on TV except reruns and sports.

Tennis channel has from 4 to 11pm (EDT) slotted for the men's semis, so they must be showing them both on tape delay. The local NBC affiliate (Jacksonville, FL) has from 10am to 1pm (EDT) for one semi. I may just hibernate all day until 4pm and watch tennis channel.
NBC Flat sucks, and if I watch TC, I get Johnny Mac instead of Dickhead Enberg.
This really sucks the big one !!!!

I just went to Yahoo TV, since I can't get the TV guide site to function, and I set it to Pacific time for NBC tomorrow, and sadly, we're getting the semis at 10am here, just like the east coast, so apparently both matches will be on delay here. I'm disgusted. I'm stuck following the semis of a grand slam tournament on live internet scoreboard. If a network isn't willing to bother playing semis live, and that means both of them, they shouldn't get the broadcast rights.

I guess I should go back to Yahoo TV and find out if I'll have to follow the final on internet scoreboard too.

I remember how pissed I was at NBC during the Roddick/Murray match at Wimbledon in 2006. I was following the scoreboard and I was just dying! Coverage started during the third set and I was thinking, "Finally, I can see how the match has been going." Much to my chagrin, they started the match from the beginning even though it was still going on in the 3rd set. :fiery:

I really hate NBC right now. It's so disrespectful to viewers. Either they don't care that the fans are upset or they think we're all stupid. I think it may be the stupid one since they tried to act like the Nadal-Verdasco match on Sunday was live, which drove me nuts.

NBC is a big joke. Why the hell the has rights to broadcast tennis , when they are not interested on showing live coverage. They can save money and leave the rights ot TTC. They are always interested in showing cat and dog shows live rather than an important tennis event.

Their like the big bully vultures who swoop in and steal all the good stuff in the end, tossing scrap of coverage to the masses when they remember they're there. Like buying a fancy car just to prove that you can afford it, but never bother to drive it at all. They just want to hoard the big matches from their competitors.

And if the match goes over the allotted three hours? Will NBC edit it, or just cut it off at the end? I expect either.

I'll probably succumb to a scoreboard and listening to RG radio, which might not be so bad, or "the day as it is" at the RG site, has upbeat tennis commentary :) It sucks but bottom line its a lot of good tennis to see one way or the other :) hows that for the half full vs half empty glass interpretation!

Effing NBC.

Show everything on tape delay -> lower ratings -> less tennis coverage -> less chance for American public to get a chance to see tennis on a major network. It's annoying for us but it's also bad for tennis.

Why do they even cover it at all if they are not going to make an effort to do a decent job?

Does anyone know about the finals? The tv guide says they'll start at 9 a.m. both days, which would be 3 p.m. in Paris. The guide says "live" but it says that for tomorrow's semis too so I must not know what that word means. Does anyone know if the weekend matches are actually live?

TTC schedule on their website says - 4 pm (EDT) Second mens' semifinal and 11 pm Second mens' semi REPEAT. Wonder if they are just showing Federer/Monfils twice and letting NBC do their usual screw up coverage of the first semi?? But they have nothing else on the schedule between 4pm and 11pm so there is time for both

SO anybody know a live stream of Nadal/Djoke? I'll be at work so can't even "enjoy" NBC's crappy coverage on TV but I could have a live stream on at work.

Just as the matches start, go to channelsurfing.net The streams are all marked with the RG logo. You are bound to find 1 of them which will show the semis on Fri morning. You can also try www.justin.tv. Click on sports at the top of the page and see who's offering RG. Good quality transmissions form TV stations showing RG.

People, I would tape the NBC coverage and watch it after the TTC semi since you know that the dipshits at NBC will do what they always do and blurt out the results of the first semi during their coverage-thus completely ruining the match for everyone. Oh, and you know they will hack it bits so you'll know, oh, around the second hour mark who wins the match. Fuckers. The real question is what in the fing world is NBC doing mucking with the freaking semis of RG? They know damn well no American will be in them. Why piss off their regular viewers who want to watch the 7th hour of Today in that time block? This is what always gets me about NBC, they only manage to piss off everyone-tennis fans and their usual dopey daytime viewers.

Will there ever be a time when someone inside tennis in the U.S. will stand up for the U.S. tennis fan and make sure that there is live tennis coverage - somewhere???????????????

This is a SF is a GRAND SLAM. This isn't some MM event.

There s/b LIVE coverage for BOTH SFs.

channelsurfing.net is cool for like... basketball or futbol/soccer, but the quality is annoying for tennis because it's really difficult to see the tennis ball with their feeds (at least for me).

Tennischannel.com were showing all the courts live the first week, but they stopped that... Too bad, cause it was good quality. And to bad RG doesn't even offer anything like the Wimbledon Live thing, 'cause that had top notch quality.

Well, to be honest, I doubt the average tennis viewer in the states would know it was live or not without being told on the TV. My parents are pretty big tennis fans, they know all of the top players and watch tennis almost as much as I do, but the idea of following matches online or looking up scores is rather silly to them. So if my parents wouldn't even know, then I know most tennis viewers in the country wouldn't either.

I can avoid the computer, but the main problem is that grand slams are still pretty big deals and there's always a chance I'll flip to the wrong channel at the right time and catch them blurt out a result.

I'm sure that's true but your parents are old. People my age, who grew up with computers and who follow tennis, are going to be aware that the match is not live and are less likely to sit down and watch a three hour match for which they know the result.

Scotso

My parents might be "old" to you, but they are bigger computer junkies than I am. :p I don't think you can use age as a judgment of what people do with regards to technology. They just don't sit around staring at match scores.

I seriously doubt more than 5-10% of tennis fans would do that. We're the hardcore ones.

You're insane if you don't accept that showing sporting events on tape delay affects the ratings. Look at NBC's coverage of the Olympics of late. The ratings are in the toilet because they show NOTHING live. It's all prerecorded. How many people do you think would watch soccer or football or baseball or any major sport if the result was already decided? You just can't get away with that in the age of the internet.

And I never suggested they sit and stare at a computer screen, you only have to check the Roland Garros website once in the morning to get the scores.

The casual tennis viewer might not notice or care that the semis aren't live, but I'm pretty sure they'll notice that the second semi-final is completely missing.

My mom is going to avoid the internet all morning so she won't know what happened, but she's mad as hell that she's not going to see the Federer semi. And she's what you'd call a casual viewer, who pretty much just tunes in when it's convenient, and only watches slams, since she doesn't have digital cable to get the Tennis Channel.

straight sets. You have a perfect opportunity to show Federer Monfils

anyways? Just leave the broadcast to the Tennis Channel. They won't
dare show tape delay matches. Your network is a horrible, vile,
disgusting sham! Not showing live tennis is a deplorable decision. Gee, how
many Andy "I might be the worst clay court player in tennis" Roddick &
James "I'm the biggest choker in grand slams" Blake repeats will you
show when Wimbledon starts? Good thing Blake will go out early like he
